President’s Report

On behalf of the Board of the Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League, I am pleased to present the Annual Report for the 2019 season.

This year we had 2,012 players registered down from 2,066 in 2018. There was an increase in female registrations from 90 in 2018 to 128 in 2019. Note the total number of female registrations in 2017 was 37. In addition to this there were 73 female player registrations in the female tag competitions.

There were 143 teams in 2019 compared to 152 in 2018 in our age groups from Under 6 to A Grade. In addition to the 143 teams there were 5 female tag teams, representing a total of 148 teams.

We only had five local A Grade teams with no teams from North Sydney, therefore it was decided to join the Open Age Sydney Conference Competitions. With Manly teams Premiers (Cromer) and the runners-up (Avalon) in the Gold Division and Premiers in the Silver Division (Belrose). Cromer defeated Avalon 15-14 in extra time in the Gold Division Grand Final at Lake Park and Belrose defeated Greenacre 32-24 in the Silver Division Grand Final.

Many of our teams played in combined competitions conducted by the NSWRL. Thank you to NSWRL, especially Michael Hanratty for the administration of these competitions during 2019.

I would like to congratulate all the teams that qualified for the Final Series, from semi – finals onwards.

All our competitions rely heavily on the huge contribution made by Club Volunteers who give up their time to help in some way i.e. Set up the fields and later take them back down, run the canteen, work on the barbecue, clean up the grounds and change rooms, coach, manage, perform first aid duties, act as sports trainers, ground managers and Committee Members of our various clubs. I thank them on behalf of the players and the District JRL.

I would also like to thank the referees for their contribution to our District JRL.

It is also important to highlight the financial assistance provided by the Manly Warringah Leagues Club which has supported the M-W Junior Rugby League for many years. I would like to thank the Leagues Club Board for their contribution and assistance including use of Club facilities for our fortnightly meetings. If you are not yet a member of the Leagues Club then I ask you to join and take advantage of its facilities and to show our support for the Club’s continued contribution to junior

rugby league in our District. The continued financial support of the Manly Leagues Club is paramount to our District Junior Rugby League.

The Bendigo Bank at Freshwater is our other major sponsor and I wish to document the appreciation of the MWDJRL of the continued financial support of the Bendigo Bank at Freshwater.

A huge thank you to the members of the Manly Warringah Junior Rugby League Board and Executive who also give up their valuable time in running our various competitions. All of these people volunteer at their own junior league Club and also find the time and energy to contribute at the District Level. I would also like to thank each of these people for their support and counsel during 2019.

The NSWRL provided administrative support for the MWDJRL with Ben James the Club & Competitions Co-ordinator for the Northern Region and Lauren Coltman in the role of Junior League Administrator of MWDJRL. Both Ben and Lauren provided valuable contributions throughout the year and we look forward to continue to work with Ben and Lauren leading into the next season and through-out the 2020 season. Our appreciation is extended to Stuart Stanton and the NSWRL for their support of our District Junior Rugby League by providing the administrative resources of both Ben and Lauren.

Lauren commenced her position after the season had commenced in April but soon proved an invaluable resource of our Junior League.

We were able to achieve 100% success rate with accreditation compliance in 2019 up from 61% in 2018, this is a great result and would not have been possible without the work and persistence of Ben James.

Four clubs were awarded NSWRL Blue Shield Status in 2019, those clubs being, Mona Vale, Beacon Hill, Forestville and Cromer.

Anthony Rogers from the Beacon Hill Club was awarded NSWRL Manly District Volunteer of the Year.

I would also like to thank the Junior League Development Officers for their work throughout 2019.

Thank you to David O’Donnell and his team for all their continued great work with the Junior League Development Squads. In addition to their substantial contribution to the Saturday Grand Finals.

I would also like to thank the Manly Warringah District Football Club who provide general corporate guidance and assistance when appropriate.

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 9

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and carers whom, amongst other things, get the players to home and away games and training. Thank you also to the spectators for attending games and supporting our players.

In my third as President, I would like to thank everyone who contributed in some way to the running of the game in our District and I look forward to seeing everyone back again in 2020.

Executive Report (Secretary)

2019 saw for the 1st time in Manly Junior League history the A Grade competition play in a combined districts competition, as well as the 20’s competition.

Results in these competitions went extremely well for all of the teams representing the Manly District with Manly hosting the following Grand Finals. Both Avalon and Cromer fighting out a hard fought A Grade Grand Final that resulted in a golden point 15-14 win to Cromer. Belrose beating Greenacre in hard fought see-sawing A Grade Silver Grand Final and Narrabeen losing narrowly to Earlwood in the 20’s Grand Final.

Belrose RLFC became the 1st club in Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby League history to see 3 generations win an A Grade Premiership.

The 1st being Harry Brown in 1967 followed by Matt Brown in 1994 and culminating with Lachlan Brown in 2019

With an extremely wet week prior to the Grand Final Weekend both Nolans and were unable to host any games.

A big thank you to both the Narrabeen and Belrose clubs for making their facilities available with literally hours notice please pass on MWDJRL thanks to all of your volunteers that made this happen. The rain that fell during the games on Saturday definitely didn't dampen the spirits of all the players and Lake Park saw a few games go into overtime.

Narrabeen also hosted the Sunday Grand Finals with late notice on Saturday Evening thank you again

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 10

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

Well done to all teams that competed in the Grand Finals and congratulations to Grand Final winners.

A BIG THANK YOU to both Tahlia Binding and Dave O'Donnell and the rest of the Junior League Development team for their organisation of the Grand Final weekend.

Thank You to Geoff Toovey, , Matt Baling, for support and help over the Grand Final weekend.

This year saw the appointment of Lauren Coultman as NSWRL Manly District Conference Coordinator. Lauren took on the huge task to coordinate draws entering results and generally keeping sporting pulse up to date along with Ben James they both ensured that our district was one of the best performing districts as far as NSWRL compliance. A BIG Thank You to both of you

As we know Rugby League is about the kids and it was great seeing the happy faces of all the boys and girls that participated throughout the year. However we are still well short of the numbers that we require to host our own inner district competitions from 13’s to Open Age. As stated in previous reports this is major concern and something all teams from all clubs along with MWDJRL and NSWRL need to address.

A big thank you to all the volunteers including, coaches manager and trainers across all clubs that made it possible for the kids to play each week.

Lastly thank you to my other Board Members Kim Hunter, Tom Akhurst, John Fox, Bob Butcher, Les Elliott and Alison Keen.

Matt Brown Secretary MWDJRLFC

Treasurer’s Report

On behalf of the Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated (“Junior League”), I am pleased to present the financial situation for the 2019 season.

From a profit and loss perspective, the Junior League finished the year with a small operating profit. With over 50% of the Junior League income provided by the Clubs, I would like to thank the Club Committees for their tireless work and commitment throughout the year in order to provide these

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 11

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

funds to support the running of the Junior League. In particular, thanks to each of the Club Treasurer’s for the important part they play in the financial stewardship of their Club.

Sponsorship continues to be an important source of income for the Junior League. This year, Sponsorship contributed one third of total income for the Junior League. The Manly Warringah Leagues Club has been a consistent and loyal financial supporter of the Junior League for many years and this year was no exception. I would like to thank the Leagues Club for their continued sponsorship of the Junior League in the Manly Warringah District, which is greatly appreciated.

Operating Expenses for the Junior League centred around three main areas, Players Insurance ($67,384), Referees Fees ($39,344) and Council Sports Field User Fees ($16,524). These three items accounted for nearly 80% of the total operating expenses of the Junior League this year.

Due to the wet weather, the first division grand finals were relocated from Brookvale Oval to Lake Park. As a result, two revenue streams for the Junior League were adverse impacted, i.e., Grand Final gate takings and bar sales on Sunday. Although we made a small loss on the day, this was more than offset by the good crowds, fantastic atmosphere and the high quality rugby league on display during the day.

Finally, a huge “thank you” to all the volunteers, players, parents and spectators that have made 2019 another successful year of rugby league in Manly Warringah.

Judiciary Report

First of all a big thank you to all clubs who have taken control of their players and trained them in an appropriate manner regarding on field tactics and illegal play. It is pleasing to note that there has been a reduction in ‘replacements’ during the games being played in the Manly Warringah Pittwater area. A lot of the congratulations must go to the referees who have been allocated to each game. The approach that they have regarding players and the way they have treated them is a credit to Keith Povah, Laurie Lawira and Todd Smith with a bit of help from Addie Flippance. Refereeing is a hard but rewarding job and if a referee is given support from the allocated ground Manager, then he/she feels that they are protected as well as supported in some way. Owing to the lack of ‘advisors’ at grounds, these kids have produced a great effort in refereeing. Mind you, this does not make the players any better as far as illegal play is concerned, this comes from the coaches and parents. There were some decisions made regarding senior teams this year which has nothing to do with the MWDJRLFC Judiciary panel. We only control from Under 6 to Under 12. There were only four (4) young players removed from the field for the rest of the game and these lads were interviewed in the company of their parents and coaches and not one of them was a ‘repeat offender’. So, we must be doing something good.

Thanks to my old mate Frank Cridland who has supported me again this year and took over whilst I was on holidays. Also, the support I receive from Clubs, Coaches and parents makes me feel that we are doing a good job top curb violence and offensive behaviour on the field of play. Thanks also to the MWDJRLFC Executive who have supported me during the year.

What another enjoyable and competitive year 2019 has been. We fielded eleven junior teams including two teams in both Under 6’s and 8’s, and A grade were back again after having a year off. In a great effort, all of our competitive teams (u9’s and above) made the final series with the Under 10’s and A grade representing the club on grand final day. Unfortunately, there were no premiership jackets this year, with the Under 10’s doing it tough in wet conditions and the A grade narrowly missing out after a golden point loss in extra time. This year’s A grade Gold Conference comp was enjoyed by the players and fans alike. It is hoped that the result will inspire more local juniors to play at this level and continue to build on the strength of rugby league across the beaches. Well done to all the Avalon players who did the club and local community very proud throughout the year showing sportsmanship, determination and at the same time enjoying their footy with mates.

Our efforts are now being directed to 2020 where we will be focussing on player retention and attraction across all age groups, in order to grow the club even further. The club continues to have a great local community sponsor and supporter base, which ensures that the financial operations of the club continue to grow and remain in a healthy position. A special mention must go to all of our sponsors who generously provide the backing to ensure the club remains financially viable and that the player benefits are optimised. The Club participated in several charitable events again this year making donations to Avalon RSL (for school library books) at the ANZAC day march, our senior grade participated in a special round against Domestic Violence, and we sponsored Friendly in the World’s Greatest Shave. The club is also about promoting healthy lifestyles with a particular focus on addressing current day challenges such as obesity and mental health.

In July this year, our Under 14’s team toured New Zealand after a mighty effort of fundraising and local sponsorships, including a donation from the club. They represented the club with great pride and respect and played some really competitive footy against much bigger opponents. Thank you to the coaching staff, parents and players for making this tour such a memorable and enjoyable one, congratulations to all.

I would like to again thank the club’s committee that ensures the administration and operation of the club runs smoothly and efficiently. They have all made light work of the important jobs that have resulted in us being such a successful and respected club. To all the coaches, managers and training staff – a very big thank you. These guys play a critical part in developing not only our kid’s skills set, Season 2019 Annual Report Page 14

but acting as role models to reinforce the club values of teamwork, inclusiveness, leadership and community. Thanks also to the Manly Warringah DJRL executive and referees, as well as the NSW Rugby League (Ben and Lauren) for their support and coordination roles, much appreciated!

Thanks again for a great season……looking forward to 2020.

From Little Things Big Things Grow

The 2019 season was a year of rebuilding for our club. The club has gone through a changing of the guard in the transition from 2018 into the new era of 2019 and beyond. With that came an entirely new executive committee that’s sole focus is to build the club back up to be a well-respected and competitive club where kids can come and play footy with their mates and progress through the various age groups.

Mainly due to lack of numbers brought on by young teenagers having many commitments, our highly successful teams from 2018, Under 13 - Grand Finalist, Under 14’s - Premiers & Under 15’s - Premiers could not return for the 2019 season. This was devastating for the boys and the club as each of these teams have been standout performers throughout the age groups and between them, they have won numerous premierships. The majority of the boys have filtered through to other teams and most importantly are continuing to play footy. We wish them all the best. Our Under 9’s also couldn’t field a team due to numbers and have also filtered through into other clubs.

So for the 2019 season, we fielded teams in the Under 6’s, 7’s and 8’s. This made the executive team’s job a lot easier – all we need to focus on is growing the club from the grassroots level and making sure that anyone who is involved with the club has a great experience, be it player, parent, supporter or other clubs. I feel that was achieved.

Some highlights and thanks for the year:

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 15

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

- The NRL ran a League Stars clinic at the beginning of the season at Beacon Hill Oval. Through the club and NRL’s efforts, we had the most participants attending the clinic across the whole of Sydney. A huge achievement.

- The club is now a NSWRL accredited Blue Shield Club. We are the 3rd club in our district and 22nd in the state to achieve this. Huge thanks to Heidi Malligan and Karen Pellicano for your hard work on this.

- We had 15 players register for the Under 6’s!! When the club is building from the ground up, this is a phenomenal start. Thanks to Freddy and Bonnie Lussick for driving this age group.

- The fantastic relationship the club has with both the NRL and NSWRL. Thanks to Sam Redman from the NRL and Ben James from NSWRL for your support throughout the year. It’s very much appreciated.

- The rebuild of the canteen. It looks great and presents the club very nicely on game days. Thanks to Thalita Rogers, Emu, Adam Darsley and Michael Malligan for making this happen.

- Our fabulous sponsors. Thank you so much for your support. Without your support, the club cannot survive.

- The new executive team. You have all stepped up when the club needed you. Everyone has pulled their weight and contributed to making the season very enjoyable. I look forward to building on this in the years ahead.

- Coaches and Managers. Thanks for all your hard work and guidance you provided across the season. All the teams were noticeably better at the end of the season due to your dedication at training and game day.

- All the parents. A big thanks to all of you for assisting when required on the BBQ, packing up the field or helping out at training. You’re a big reason this club will continue to grow.

- Lastly, I would like to thank our Vice President, Heidi Malligan for everything she does for the club. On top of running a number of businesses, Heidi dedicates her time to the club and is always proposing and completing fresh/innovative ways for the club to improve. This club wouldn’t survive without Heidi. Thank you again.

2019 was a season of many firsts. As a club I feel we are very well placed to improve on this season and take Beacon Hill Bears onto bigger and better things for 2020 and beyond.

Enjoy the off season and I look forward to seeing each of you early next year.

Grant Jennings President Beacon Hill Bears JRLFC

Belrose Eagles JRLFC

At Belrose, we started the 2019 season with the hope of gaining more player numbers (as each club does), with the board, coaches and volunteers working hard in the off season to recruit from Under 6’s through to Sydney Shield.

After much work, we posted two teams in the Under 6’s and a team in all other age groups up to Under 14’s (except Under 8’s). With all teams competing in Semi-Finals we were confident of grabbing a couple of Premierships in the juniors, our Under 9’s and 13’s making it through to the ‘Big Dance’ with the Under 9’s victorious but unfortunately the Under 13’s fell just short in a thrilling game at North Sydney Oval.

In the seniors, our ongoing combined effort with Harbord Devils saw us enter a joint venture again this year in the Under 17’s in the Silver Combined Conference, well done to all involved. Whilst the previous years Under 20’s numbers were strong, the decision to ask these boys to step up to A Grade turned out to be a master stroke by Coach Scott Cable with his players enjoying the challenge and running out A Grade Minor Premiers then Premiers beating Greenacre in the Silver Combined Conference Grand Final at Lake Park, Narrabeen in front of an enormous and vocal crowd. Unfortunately, our Sydney Shield had a very difficult season, battling with low numbers and injuries throughout the entire year.

Although it appears that Rugby League is dropping off on the Northern Beaches, there are many that believe we can turn things around, from the parent that wants their child playing this great game and arrives early to help set up the ground and start up the BBQ, to the Coaches and Managers recruiting and training the players for their match each week, through to the Boards of each club fighting to keep the dream alive for these young kids, we would not have a game or competition without all of you.

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 17

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

To the Referees Association, your commitment to our game locally is fantastic well done in bring through the next generation of young officials.

To the Administration at Manly Warringah District Junior League and NSWRL for assisting all clubs where possible, great job.

As clubs cannot run on the love of Rugby League, thank you to all of our Club Sponsors some long standing and some new, your generous support is invaluable, and your sense of community is outstanding.

Finally, to my fellow Board members, Eric, Deb, Peter, Dave and Bri. Thank you for your faith, commitment and your support throughout the 2019 season.

THANK YOU!

Sean Wilson President Belrose RLFC

Christian Brothers OBFC

Season 2019 was both a successful and challenging one at Brothers. We lost a number of players from last year in the U10’s and 13’s due to various reasons and will defintely have a solid recruiting program for next season, targeting local schools and the touch football players that share our home ground.

All teams took the field in their ISC supplied playing kit and certainly looked the part for the start of the season. A massive thanks to our Sponsors, especially URM and our new sponsor Andris Automotive for making this possible. Sponsorship is also a challenge for the Club for next season.

Online registration and the Active Kids vouchers also contibuted to the health of the Clubs financial situation.

Many thanks to the Clubs group of dedicated Coaches, trainers and managers who all give up valuable time to help our players aquire not only the skills of the game but a real love of footy.

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 18

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

The u6 and U8 sides were well coached and managed and these young players certainly increased the skill levels while have great fun. Thanks to Daniel, Mathew, Brendon, Amy and Mark for getting these boys on the field and making sure they had such fun playing footy.

The Modified game teams (u9 to 12) have many challenges with lots of rules designed to ensure equal game time for all and equal competitions. Congratulations to Ryan, Steve and Gary for so ably helping the boys through their first years of competitive footy while maintaining the Brothers ethos, that enjoying the game and playing fair are first and foremost. Thanks also to Paula, Samantha and Minna for managing these teams so well.

The U9’s tasted semi final success before bowing out in the second week but improved considerably as the season progressed and should go well next year. The U12s had a taste of 1st Division for the start of the season and the boys did very well to lift their game to a higher standard. The U11 side are Division 2 Premiers after defeating Narraweena in a classic grand final.

International Rules (u13 and over) is certainly a step up and with so many players having school and other sport commitments it was challenging to get our 13’s 15’s 16’s and 17’s fit and on the park each week.

Our 13’s certainly developed throughout the year and had plenty of fun. Thanks very much to Matt for stepping up to coach these boys and to Cassie for her management skills.

Our U15 sides were Division 1 Minor Premiers, losing only 2 games all year (unfortunatley the 2nd loss was the Grand Final). Great work from Jason working with a team made up from Div 1 and Div 2 players from last year and some new players and welding them into a great team.

Our U16 team was the success story of the year for the Club. Struggling for numbers early in the season the boys and their coach, Trent , really hit their straps late in the season and defeated the Northern Grizzlies in a classic Grand Final at North Sydney Oval. Thanks to Mel for getting the boys on the park each week.

Our U17 team combined with Cromer to field a side in the strong North Eastern Gold Conference. They struggled with numbers through injuries and school commitments but were still a formidable side. Well done Matt for coaching in tough circumstances.

Thanks to all the parents and siblings who helped out with the numerous jobs that goes with hosting footy matches; canteen, bbq, ropes, pads benches etc. whatever needed doing it seemed we always had some help. Thanks again.

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 19

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

Special thanks again go to our Canteen Manager, Jac McCauley. The canteen is the major source of funds for the Club and it means we can get the gear we need to maintain a succesful footy club.

Thanks also to our Secretary/Registrar team Malcolm and Joyce Engledew.

A big thanks to Gary Malcolm who helped out all acroos the board this year, from running the water for the U9s to strapping the older teams and generally helping out anywhere it was needed.

Thanks doesn’t seem enough to say to John Fox (Foxy). The amount of work he does for our club and the junior league is incredible.

Another challenge for the Club going forward will be bringing more volunteers on board to help with various roles (gear steward, social and sponsorship come to mind). Anyone is welcome to help, just contact us through our website www.manlybrothers.com.au

I hope you all our have a great summer and hope to see you all back for Season 2020.

Greg Keogh President Christian Bros OBFC

Cromer Kingfishers JRLFC

2019 season saw the Cromer Kingfishers celebrate 50 years as a junior rugby league club in the Manly Warringah district! To commemorate 50 years we saw a change in the club logo and a cocktail dinner which was held at Dee Why RSL, with memorabilia from the last 50 years and the naming of the half centennial team.

This season our player’s numbers increase to over 220, which was a growth of 60 players! After 10 years of no senior football team, Cromer fielded an A grade, which went on to be not only minor premiers but grand final winners. Cromer also led the district in female football, with 3 tackle teams and the induction of blues tag. Again the blues tag girls went onto the grand final. Of our 15 teams we had 4 teams make grand finals, U/10W, U/13 girls Tag, U/14 Gold and A grade Gold, with A grade and the U/10W going on to win.

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 20

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

Over the course of the season we had 16 rounds of footy plus semis, with Cromer hosting over 100 games of league at St Matthews Farm. We also inducted 5 players into centennial club.

The 2019 season has been a great success for the club with our player numbers increasing and financials remaining positive. With off field issues dominating rugby league locally and country wide, I am happy to say that as a club, we have focused on ensuring we “Let them play”. Our players, coaches, managers, parents and supporters have all represented this great club in a positive light and should be congratulated.

This year we fielded junior sides U6 through to U15s (with a joint U11s Curly Ferrets team; no U14s). We also fielded our senior sides in Open Ladies and Mens A Grade. On the football field we achieved some great results with the U9 (W) being grand finalists and U12 (W) winning the Premiership. Congratulations to their coaches Paul Thackeray and Dean Lythal on a job well done.

In the seniors our strategic partnerships with Asquith for the Men and North Sydney for the Ladies again proved beneficial to everyone involved. We will look to continue these partnerships next year. Hopefully we will be able to announce other new partnerships in the new year that will benefit our players and provide them with access to opportunities in and outside our club.

I would like to congratulate the senior sides for their commitment to our club and its culture. Your support of our junior sides was again fantastic in 2019 season. The junior sides have loved to see you helping out at trainings and supporting them on game days.

We are continuing to negotiate with council over our oval and everything this encompasses including our access and improving facilities. Council is under heavy pressure to find more fields for other sports.

Currently negotiations have been quite positive and we are hopeful of getting some positive outcomes over the next 12 months.

This year saw the great success of our Junior Sponsors Raffle to secure our sponsors. A massive thank you to everyone who participated in the Sponsors raffle and I hope you will continue your support. Without you the club could not run and the kids would not get to play this great game.

Our senior sponsors are still the life blood to having these teams compete in the competition. Your support is greatly appreciated and we hope you will join us again next year.

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 22

I would also like to thank all the coaches and managers who dedicate so much time and energy to ensure that our kids and parents alike have a positive experience in the club. Most older players will state that their love of their club and their loyalty is built through the positive experiences they gained from their junior coaches and teammates.

To the clubs directors I thank you for your continued support and dedication to our great club. I am confident 2020 will be another great year and look forward to welcoming new players and families to our club.

We will be ramping up our recruitment drive and actively getting our name out into the public view more than ever. Remember to spread the word and help us to continue to grow the club. If you are interested in sponsoring, coaching or managing or joining our committee, please feel free to contact me to discuss.

Helpers are always welcomed!!

I wish everyone a happy, healthy and relaxing off-season. See you all back next year with a friend.

Hooray The Ferrets!

Scott Newman President Forestville Ferrets JRLFC

Harbord United Devils JRLFC

2019 has been a real success for the Harbord Devils. We have seen growth in our junior levels and seen new coaches putting their hands up to assist.

We have some team achievements that need to be mentioned;

• Under 9’s First Division Premiers

• Under 10’s First Division Premiers

• Under 12’s First Division Premiers

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 23

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

It’s nice to acknowledge these achievements but what we are most proud of in this club is culture, growth in our juniors and the amazing family environment that we strive to better year after year. We have once again seen approximately 40 under 6 players registered in 2019, for the first time in many years had 2 sides in all age groups from under 7’s through to under 12’s and our under 9’s managed 3 sides in their age groups. It is exciting with this growth where we will be in year to come.

We have a club filled rich with history, but to continue to make history we need plenty of volunteers to ensure this happens. As a club we have some amazing people who put their hands up every week. It’s the work by these people behind the scenes completing the thankless tasks that we appreciate and want to recognise.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody involved with the Harbord Devils in 2019

Ben Smith Club President Harbord United Devils JRLFC

Mona Vale Raiders JRLFC

2019 will go down in history for all the right reason – Girls teams were welcomed to the club!

We had 275 registered players up from 205 in 2018 and 20 teams up from 17 and 93 volunteers up from 54. All teams played some hard but fair football throughout the year, a special mention must go to the U10M, U11M, Both U13’s Girls team, U13 Boys, U14 and also the U/15 girls for making it through to the finals in 2019 and U13 boys and U13 Girls (1) for winner their respective Grand Final

Our 2019 committee members were Frank Sergi (Vice President & Junior League Delegate), Charlotte Horty (Secretary) Andrew Drennan (Treasurer) Chanel Boyle (Registrar) Deryck Nagy – Horty (Grounds Manager) Mitch Murphy (Coaching Co-ordinator & Junior League delegate) Corinna Sergi (Gear Manager) Vaughan Wooldridge (Recruitment & First Aid manager) Jason Death (Sponsorship Manager) Jen Schulenburg (Social Events / Fundraising Manager) and Kurt Schulenberg (Ground Maintenance)

A break down on the numbers is:

1. Our club’s retention rate was 81.46% which ranks your club as first in the Manly Junior League. Our retention rate last year was 69%

2. Across the whole of the NSWRL and CRL our club is ranked 18th for retention across in the state out of 180 NSWRL Junior League Clubs and 450 CRL clubs

3. Total male registrations in 2017 - 199

• Total registrations for males in 2018 - 203 (ranked 6th for total male rego’s in Manly)

• Total male registrations in 2019 – 212 (ranked 3rd for total male registrations in Manly, not bad for a Junior league club with no seniors)

4. Total female registrations in 2017 – 1

• Total female registrations in 2018 – 2 (ranked 7th for female registrations in Manly)

• Total female registrations in 2019 – 63 (ranked 2nd for female rego’s in Manly, Cromer had us by 1 with 64)

5. Only NSWRL clubs do Blue Shield so out of the 180 clubs our ranked 12th, and ranked first in the Manly area

There was plenty happening off the field with the committee. Mona Vale are now a recognised State of Mind Club, again we are the first club to do this in NSW, we will be having two Wellbeing officers available to all in 2020 this could be players, coaches and parents next year. It’s important to look after your mates on and off the field!

Mona Vale Raiders are also the FIRST Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby League Club to receive the Blue Shield status. The Blue Shield Program is a Junior Club recognition and development program developed to assist Junior Rugby League Clubs with the management and improvement of their Clubs.

Clubs are asked to complete online modules to monitor their performance in six key areas:

• Governance & Accreditation

• Finance

• Media & Marketing

• Facilities

• Community & Welfare

• On-Field (Football Operations)

With the program only becoming available for clubs in early 2018 only 14 clubs in NSW have successfully completed the program. There are over 180 clubs in NSW alone. These clubs have demonstrated the willingness and capacity to run a quality community sporting club. The NSWRL encourages all participants to strive for excellence both on and off the field, these clubs have demonstrated that they are doing this

We again raised the topic of a clubhouse with Northern Beaches Council. Partnering with peninsula Cricket Club, our submission was hand balled between numerous council departments. Recognition must go to Frank for the hours of time and reams of communication along with a healthy amount of patience needed when dealing with the council. Unfortunately, this is still a work in progress, and I hope next year we will start to really make progress for this to one day become a reality.

Sponsorship continued to grow in thanks to the great work by Jason, ‘Doc’ as he is known to so many had 35 sponsors on board in 2019, Domain our major sponsor was back on board for a 16th consecutive year. Sponsors are the backbone of the club and we couldn’t do the things as a club without their support. To have so many sponsors shows you how well our club in received in the community. These funds go towards uniforms, trophies, insurances, new gear, trips away, yearbook the list goes on. To all the sponsors listed in docs report THANK YOU!

A couple other thanks you I must mention this season,

• Corrina Sergi – you had three of the hardest jobs. The uniforms, merchandise and the trophies which were all done without fuss and without any issues, can’t thank you enough

• Jen Schulenberg – Great work with the social night once again

Season 2019 Annual Report Page 26

Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby Football League Incorporated

• Matt Ballin & Jake Trbojevic thanks for your efforts on the social night, coming straight from Brookvale oval to be the MC and Jake battered and bruised for helping on the night and the with the donations

• Jemma Murphy – for all the work involved with the team photos & videos throughout the season – fantastic work

• To all the coaches, Manager, Trainers, first aiders. It’s a tough but rewarding job. We were the only club 100% fully compliant in terms of coaches qualified, managers having Working with children, trainers having Leaguesafe. Its time consuming but players and parents do appreciate it

And finally, I would also like to thank the parents that drive their children to training and come along to support them on game day, and of course to the boys & girls that come down and play each week. Coming to play sport and being part of a team is such an important part of growing up, not only to learn social skills and discipline, but also the physical benefits.

Where do you start, another season has finished?

It was very pleasing to see the numbers of participants increase again this year as well we were also lucky to have some great new coaches & helpers come in and be involved

Huge Congratulation to the U10 M and the U11M (who have been Premiers since the U9’s) who were successful in winning their Grand Finals.

Also, to all our team who made the finals series your congratulations to you all played well.

This year we were able to field multiple teams in most of our age groups up to U11’s. Then one U12, U13 and U16 being our only senior team with promising talent for the future.

Congratulations to all our players & parents for the season

Off the field it was good to see some new faces with a number of new faces on the committee as well as helping out around the club.

Hope everyone enjoys their off season and we look forward to seeing all the players and families back next year.

I have now been Secretary of this fantastic Club for 6 years. It has been an honour to get to know the kids and parents. We have a great club!

We were able to field teams in ages from U6’s to U14’s. I believe that is a great effort for a small family orientated football club. Of course most teams could do with more players, so please spread the word in the off-season!

I think we should all be proud of the way our whole club supports each other and the club. The way the parents help out on game day, the committee doing a lot of work behind the scenes and the help by everyone in raising funds after the fire.

I would like to thank everyone for selling tickets, buying tickets, donating prizes and turning up to the raffle draw. It was good to raise funds to replace the things we lost in the fire. Hopefully by the start of next year’s season we will have the building fixed by council.

We had 3 teams in the Grand Finals this year. What a fabulous effort! The U14’s and 10’s were Premiers this year. Unfortunately the U12’s didn’t get there on the day, but had fun playing a Grand Final. All the teams in the Club, all Players, Coaches, Managers and parents should be proud, it has been a great year.

Which brings me to giving a huge thank you to our Coaches and Officials in our club. Some of them no longer have kids in the club, and I am sure would have better things to do on the weekend. But they turn up every week to help and I am very grateful, as I am sure the rest of our club is too.

A big thank you to all our sponsors this year. We couldn’t have a club without them, and we really appreciate their contribution to Junior Rugby League and the North Curl Curl Knights.

As a Club, we would also like to thank the Manly Warringah Junior League Officials and Referees. They put in a lot of their time and they do a fantastic job of getting everything organized for us to play each week.
