MANLY-WARRINGAH FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2013 FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

It is with great pride that I present this Annual Report 2013 to Football Club Members.

In 2013, the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles have once more enjoyed a level of success that is the envy of other clubs in the NRL competition.

While many of the so-called experts did not predict the Sea Eagles to make the finals, let alone the Grand Final, , his entire coaching staff, recruitment team and of course the players, proved them all wrong. I congratulate them all for an outstanding achievement in 2013. The strong winning culture that has been the hallmark of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles over many decades has been maintained and strengthened in 2013.

Preserving and protecting this heritage is the central focus of the current Manly-Warringah Football Club Board. The Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles has a proud tradition, with the local junior league being established in 1932. We have played at since the Club joined the competition in 1947, played in the same colours and with the same name. Although the Club has been a privatised entity for ten years, the Manly-Warringah Football Club and its members hold an important stake in the Club, that is, the preference share which governs where the team plays, its name, logo and colours.

Under the current Board’s tenure this heritage and tradition has been fiercely protected on behalf of Football Club Members. And while there are times this puts us at odds with other powerful and vested interests and has earned us unfair media criticism, we make no apologies for standing up for these important things.

It is vital to the future of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles that Brookvale Oval remains our home ground, however its inadequacies as a modern NRL ground, must be acknowledged. This is why members of the Board, led by our Co-Patron Kerry Sibraa AO, have been part of joint efforts to find innovative solutions and attract funding that will help further upgrade the stadium and its facilities. As members would be aware, earlier this year, both the former and current Federal Government each made a $10 million financial commitment to this upgrade. While a funding shortfall remains, the work continues, but I would like to express my gratitude to Kerry Sibraa for his perseverance and dedication to this cause.

I would also like to express my sincere appreciation of the work of Sea Eagles General Manager David Perry, Commercial Director Greg Butterworth and their team. It’s a well-known fact that behind every great Club is a well-run and hard-working front office which runs the business, attracts sponsors and keep the revenues coming in.

Thanks to the work of David and his team, the Club has made a profit in 2013 – the first time in many years. Given the difficult economic environment and ever increasing costs of running a professional sporting team, this is an enormous achievement.

It is with sadness that we farewell three great players – , George Rose and . They have been outstanding representatives of our Club both on and off the field and on behalf of Football Club Members I wish them all the very best for their future careers.

However on the more positive side, we welcomed some great new recruits, including Brenton Lawrence, and . Even more significantly, two more local juniors, and made their NRL debuts with the Sea Eagles receiving player numbers 558 and 559 respectively. The Football Club is keenly aware of the importance of fostering a strong junior league in this area and will continue to work closely with their officials in 2014. MW

Finally I would like to thank my fellow Board Members for their passion, hard work and support in standing up for this great Club and the important heritage we represent and protect. In particularFOOTBALL I would like to pay CLUB tribute to outgoing Company Secretary Philip Dean for his tireless and largely unacknowledged work for this Club over the last decade. Est. 1947 I wish all Football Club Members and their families a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. I look forward to Season 2014.

MW Lloyd retired from rugby league in 1960 after 87 first grade games with Manly. He served in the NSW Police in the Manly-Warringah District for many years. 8 9 NSWRL SG BALL SEASON 2013 BROOKVALE OVAL COMMITTEE

Since informing Members about the establishment of the Brookvale Oval Committee at last year’s AGM, a great deal of work has been done by the Committee to try and secure the future of our beloved home ground – Fortress Brookvale.

The challenges we face to stay at Brookvale are considerable. Without significant funding Brookvale Oval will be unable to meet the standards expected by the NRL and our fans. In turn this will impact on the Club’s ability to raise revenue and threaten the team’s financial viability. But leaving Brookvale Oval is not an option.

The State Government’s announced “Stadia Strategy” does not consider traditional, suburban grounds like Brookvale Oval to be priorities for funding. The NRL wants to see more games played at the bigger venues like ANZ and Allianz – with a policy of “right game, right venue”.

The Committee, comprising representatives from the Sea Eagles management, Football Club, co-owners, private sector and St Augustine’s College met regularly to develop plans that, at the same time as providing the Sea Eagles with increased undercover seating and corporate facilities would also provide St Augustine’s College with additional educational facilities and the public with meeting rooms. That is, a plan to transform Brookvale Oval into a modern, multi-use sporting and educational centre of excellence. We also wanted Brookvale Oval to be placed in a State Trust.

We presented the plans to the Federal and State Governments and were asked to scale them back considerably to a relatively modest $30 million plan which would have delivered 4,350 additional covered seats, as well as corporate hospitality, meeting and community facilities, including car parking. For that plan, we required $20 million from a Federal Government.

In August, after a decade of being ignored by successive Federal Governments, we achieved some rare bipartisan support – then Federal Minister Albanese announced a $10 million grant for Brookvale Oval, shortly followed by then Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott. Unfortunately the two $10 million commitments did not add up to $20 million, but rather just one commitment of $10 million. SQUAD: Aisea Tukipili, Beau Abrahams, Charlie Buttrose, Hayden Cochrane, James Parker , Jared Palmer, Judd Hanlon, Kyle Saunders, Liam Knight, Mitch Britton, Mitch Thomas, Robert Wolfgramm, Ryan Mawhinney, Scott Moran, Tom Trbojevic , Jesse Ramien, Riley Travers, Dallas This has left us in a difficult position – the $20 million gap in funding is enormous. Added to that, has informed Koen, Darcy Cox, Fatani Kavaefiafi, Mitchell Subotin, Nicholas Hynes, Nicholas Lynn, P J Lose, T J McLean, Wade Hannell. the Sea Eagles it plans to increase the rent this year by $90,000.

RESULTS: Illawarra W 28-18; Central Coast W 36-10; St George L 24-18, Bulldogs L 30-12; Penrith L 30-26; Parramatta L 62-6; Cronulla D28- Late in November, State Treasurer and Member for Manly, Mike Baird convened a Roundtable involving all stakeholders including 28; Canberra L 38-4; North Sydney W 22-16. all levels of government, the NRL, St Augustines and the Sea Eagles. We have discussed further options and will reconvene in February. This is a positive step because ultimately the future of Brookvale Oval cannot be secured without cooperation from all NSWRL HAROLD MATTHEWS SEASON 2013 levels of government and the NRL. The work continues. Kerry Sibraa AO Co-Patron & Chair of the Brookvale Oval CommitteeMW

22 23 SEA EAGLES OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION

I am happy to report the highlight of the year for the ‘old boys’ was the on field presentation of Premiership Rings to members of the 1973 Premiers at Brookvale Oval this year to mark the 40th anniversary of their victory over the Cronulla Sharks. This was a fantastic acknowledgement of the efforts of the Club’s ex- players and the second time the presentation has been made after recognising the ‘72 Premiers last year.

My gratitude to Dave Perry from the MWSE and Bob Reilly from the MWRLFC for recognising these players and supporting this initiative.

The players were reimbursed for travel, accommodated with their partners at no charge and provided free hospitality on the day. The Brookie fans certainly enjoy and appreciate what SEOBA have done in this regard.

I would like to thank the Mona Vale Golf Club again for hosting the annual ‘old boys’ golf day. Once again, the day was well supported and enjoyed by all. Dare I say it, but golf was certainly not the winner after we had hacked our way around the course.

It is my very great pleasure to announce the introduction of two fantastic Patrons for the Sea Eagles Old Boys Association.

Thomas Keneally AO – world renowned author Paul Vautin – Life Member, Premiership winning captain 1987 and Club Legend.

Both were very humbled and proud to have been approached to become Patrons and have signalled their intentions to assist the ‘old boys’ whenever and wherever possible.

The ‘old boys’ continue to strive to re-connect all ex-players to the Club, to be proactive in continuing their support for the Sea Eagles and raising monies to assist all District Rugby League Junior Clubs and schools. All SEOBA events and information can be accessed via the MWRLFC web-site.

Finally, I would like to thank the committee members for their hard work throughout the year.

Darrell Williams Chairman SEOBA MW

26 27 A TRIBUTE TO FOOTBALL CLUB MEMBER ANTHONY YOUNG

The last time I saw Anthony Young, the Mouse, was for some three seconds on the screen in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. Tuxedo-clad, a tiny and supposedly tipsy New York power-broker, the Mouse was entering Gatsby’s mansion for the Great Gatsby’s party-to-kill –all-parties. The diminutive Mouse often got small parts in other movies, including Moulin Rouge. He even played a trade union delegate in The Night We Called It a Day, which was against his grain, since he believed his union had failed to protect his public service job some years past. He also had a number of gigs as an air guitarist—all as outcome from competing in air guitar championships. We used to joke that it was a pity his famous sister, Simone Young, orchestral conductor, was hopeless at the air guitar and had to fall back on the lesser jobs of being musical director of the Australia Opera and the Hamburg State Opera.

It was obvious to us all that his chief role in life was to support the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. He was most alive when he was engaged in that – not only in games, but in volunteer work, sitting on the members’ committee called into being some years back, signing and processing members, and subjecting every injury, switch of position, alteration to the bench and all nuances of refer- eeing inconsistency to raucous analysis. The fact that he was below five feet at the age of fifty, due to a disability which afflicted him for life and would have defeated many of us had we been in his situation, didn’t stop him making a penetrating noise. He lived to exchange a few words with players, and he got plenty of kind ones from them, exchanges that lit up his life. On game days he zipped around the ground like a super-charged ion, talking to official and friends, garnering info and, if he could, an invite to the lounge. There he would begin his pronouncements on the progress of the game with, “Put it this way…” He always had his own way of putting it.

In a sense this vivid little man shouldn’t have been there. Because, on top of the other limiting factors of his life, he was born with a hole in his heart. He was not expected to live until five. From pure determination and courage and bloody-mindedness, he made it into his 50s. He triumphed, and made the term ‘handicapped’ irrelevant to who he was.

I think he was the greatest fan I’ve met – and I’ve met plenty. To go to Brookvale or other grounds on a cold night would often spark an infection in his lungs, yet he rarely chose to be absent. He would travel to Far North , he attended our World Club Challenges in the UK, and the weekend before he died, playing along the limits of doctor’s orders, he went to cold to watch the Sea Eagles go down to the Warriors by two points. His breathing was affected. On the following Friday, he was found, dead of a heart attack, in his flat at Harbord.

He received an open hand from many officials and committee members, former plays and members, but in particular from Kerry and Julie Sibraa, Bob and Debbie Reilly, John and Mary Finkelson, and Johnny and Deb Wilkinson.

The stands and terraces at Manly are not the same without the Mouse. Few clubs had such a fiery particle, such a striking presence, on the move and enlivening us -- sometimes to a fault. Harry and Simone, his parents, were consoled by a small commemorative moment to Mouse before the last game of the season. To them and to their distinguished daughter, Simone, we send the member- ship’s most genuine condolences. And Mouse, Brookie’s plainer and less vibrant since you went.

Thomas Keneally AO

Our deepest sympathies are extended to the families of all Football Club Members and past players of the Manly- Warringah Sea Eagles whom have passed away during the 2013 season.
