MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2013 FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT It is with great pride that I present this Annual Report 2013 to Football Club Members. In 2013, the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles have once more enjoyed a level of success that is the envy of other clubs in the NRL competition. While many of the so-called experts did not predict the Sea Eagles to make the finals, let alone the Grand Final, Geoff Toovey, his entire coaching staff, recruitment team and of course the players, proved them all wrong. I congratulate them all for an outstanding achievement in 2013. The strong winning culture that has been the hallmark of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles over many decades has been maintained and strengthened in 2013. Preserving and protecting this heritage is the central focus of the current Manly-Warringah Football Club Board. The Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles has a proud tradition, with the local junior league being established in 1932. We have played at Brookvale Oval since the Club joined the competition in 1947, played in the same colours and with the same name. Although the Club has been a privatised entity for ten years, the Manly-Warringah Football Club and its members hold an important stake in the Club, that is, the preference share which governs where the team plays, its name, logo and colours. Under the current Board’s tenure this heritage and tradition has been fiercely protected on behalf of Football Club Members. And while there are times this puts us at odds with other powerful and vested interests and has earned us unfair media criticism, we make no apologies for standing up for these important things. It is vital to the future of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles that Brookvale Oval remains our home ground, however its inadequacies as a modern NRL ground, must be acknowledged. This is why members of the Board, led by our Co-Patron Kerry Sibraa AO, have been part of joint efforts to find innovative solutions and attract funding that will help further upgrade the stadium and its facilities. As members would be aware, earlier this year, both the former and current Federal Government each made a $10 million financial commitment to this upgrade. While a funding shortfall remains, the work continues, but I would like to express my gratitude to Kerry Sibraa for his perseverance and dedication to this cause. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation of the work of Sea Eagles General Manager David Perry, Commercial Director Greg Butterworth and their team. It’s a well-known fact that behind every great Club is a well-run and hard-working front office which runs the business, attracts sponsors and keep the revenues coming in. Thanks to the work of David and his team, the Club has made a profit in 2013 – the first time in many years. Given the difficult economic environment and ever increasing costs of running a professional sporting team, this is an enormous achievement. It is with sadness that we farewell three great players – Brent Kite, George Rose and Joe Galuvao. They have been outstanding representatives of our Club both on and off the field and on behalf of Football Club Members I wish them all the very best for their future careers. However on the more positive side, we welcomed some great new recruits, including Brenton Lawrence, Justin Horo and Peta Hiku. Even more significantly, two more local juniors, Clinton Gutherson and Jake Trbojevic made their NRL debuts with the Sea Eagles receiving player numbers 558 and 559 respectively. The Football Club is keenly aware of the importance of fostering a strong junior league in this area and will continue to work closely with their officials in 2014. MW Finally I would like to thank my fellow Board Members for their passion, hard work and support in standing up for this great Club and the important heritage we represent and protect. In particularFOOTBALL I would like to pay CLUB tribute to outgoing Company Secretary Philip Dean for his tireless and largely unacknowledged work for this Club over the last decade. Est. 1947 I wish all Football Club Members and their families a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. I look forward to Season 2014.
