Last year’s inaugural NRL Auckland Nines was a great success on all fronts, with the event itself running smoothly, attracting capacity crowds and exceeding Auckland Council’s targets for visitor nights and new money into Auckland’s economy. This year’s event looks to build on last year’s success with preparations almost complete for the event at Eden Park, as well as a three day Festival and Fanzone in Aotea Square and a three part legacy programme, announced today, which will help develop the sport of rugby league. Festival and Fanzone – You’re invited The NRL Nines Festival and Fanzone runs for three days from Friday 30 January to Sunday 1 February in Aotea Square. You’re invited to join us there for an NRL-hosted free public event from 9am on Friday 30 January. This event will provide rugby league fans with the opportunity to meet all 288 NRL Nines players as they appear throughout the day. There will be exclusive signing sessions and it will be a great chance for fans to practice their ball skills with their heroes on a specially laid grass pitch. There will be giveaways, activities, live entertainment, a rugby league exhibition featuring all seven rugby league trophies, free kids’ rides and games, a marketplace and more. The team schedule for the day is: 10am – Cowboys, Eagles 11am – Roosters, Tigers 12pm – Knights, Rabbitohs, Panthers 1pm – Storm, Raiders, Dragons 2pm – Titans, Broncos, Sharks 3pm – Eels, Bulldogs, Warriors From 9am on Saturday and Sunday the Aotea Square Fanzone will be the next best thing to being at the Nines.     Welcome everyone to the Business Review of the 2014 rugby league year. I start by paying my respects to the traditional owners of the land on which we meet today, The Gadigal people of the Eora nation, their elders past and present and their emerging leaders. The intention of the Business Review is to let our game’s key stakeholders know how the business performed in 2014 and what we’re focusing on in 2015. In my remarks I’ll comment on the results for 2014 and some observations on where our focus has been and where it will go during the next year. After this, our CEO Dave Smith will present to you in some detail on the business, and Todd Greenberg, our Head of Football, will talk to the football. Last year when we reported our results, it was the end of Dave’s first year as Chief Executive and the end of the first year of our new broadcast rights deal. Today we are further down the road, the achievements are many, but the challenges are also clearer to us all - as is the thinking on how to address them. 2014 in almost every aspect was a very good year and we should all feel the game of rugby league is in good shape and is getting stronger. The metrics to support this are very clear as you will see on the following slides. Of fundamental importance, financial performance has once again been very strong. Dave will take you through this in some detail shortly, but we are extremely pleased with the $49.9 m surplus we have delivered while we are simultaneously building the capability a professional organisation of this nature requires.

Hugh McGahan singled out Manu Vatuvei and Ben Matulino, arguing both had failed to live up their status as two of our highest paid players. The former Kiwi captain said Warriors coach Stephen Kearney could make a mark by showing the pair the door, and proving to the others that poor performances won't be tolerated. “Irrespective of his standing, Manu Vatuvei has got to go,” McGahan told Tony Veitch. “And again, irre- spective of his standing, Ben Matulino has got to go. They have underperformed. If you're going to make an impact I'd say that's probably the two players that you would look at.” Bold stuff, and fair play to the man, he told it like he saw it. Kearney, on the other hand, clearly doesn’t see it the same way, since he named both in the Kiwis train-on squad, and while he acknowledged they had struggled this year, he backed himself to get the best out of them. In fact he went further, he said it was his job. “That's my responsibility as the coach, to get the individuals in a position so they can go out and play their best.
