2017 numbers were down but the Club did return to the winners circle With numbers down our under 13 & combined with Narraweena and under 15 with Harbord which turn out to be rewarding for the players. The final outcome was as follows Sydney Shield 7th & 1st qualifying finalist A Grade 6th U17 Grade 6th U15 Grade Premiers U13 Grade 5th U12/S Grade Premiers U11/M Grade Grand Finalist U10 W Grade 7th 2nd Qualifying final U9/W Grade 2nd Qualifying final U8 Grade Uncompetitive U7 Grade Uncompetitive U6 Grade Uncompetitive

This Annual Report has all the team reports from all grades and is an indication of the effort Coaches & Managers put in to ensure our players are all recognised for their efforts. Paul Clark with was in charge of the under 8 squad and they competed in the Tommy Bishop Shield against the best under 8s in the country at the end of the season .They also played the Ferrets at Sydney Football Stadium in the Manly Sea Eagles final It was disappointing for Pete Asprey to get his under 11’s to a grand final but miss out to a quickly improving Avalon but that’s the game we play. Highlights this year were certainly were our 2 premierships and it was great to see Hamish Mclean come through with the under 12 The team has planned well all year and was rewarded with a tight victory in the Grand Final. Gary Watman & Charles Dunn were also reward for their efforts and their last minute agreement to combined with Harbord worked well for both Clubs and continues A special thank you to all those volunteers who have registered with the Club and are now an accredited Coach League Safe Trainer first Aider Manager or Ground Manager. I would also like to thank all those who sent me their game sheets this year While Belrose was the only Club to add games & tries to our website and the Junior League it was pleasing to see more hits to our website. Clarissa Wilson Dave Paterson & John Borger continue to do more than asked with registrations & photos. With the requirements of head Office ever changing the Club really needs the experience of these people.

Others who have worked hard all year are those who have helped in the Canteen Clarissa Wilson & Corinne Richardson also knew what was required and were there to organise and ensured the Canteen has been open at every home game. Special thank you to those who helped on Sundays Brad & Sue Martin Vicki Collins Kerry Nugent & Sue Abrahams in particular. Sean Wilson took control of the Bar this year and with Tom Nugent & Barry Johnson & Dave Paterson ensured everyone was looked after One thing that keeps Belrose ahead of the game is the support of so many sponsors Sean Wilson got all the junior sponsors and all sponsors appeared on the Juniors jumpers this Season. Ian McKenzie managed to add to Senior grades sponsors this season and all still appear on the Club website. We would recommend to check out all the sponsors who support Belrose. Vicki Collins continues to find time to do many things within the Club but we must be so appreciative of her continuing efforts with Touch Football. Touch Football is now the fastest growing Children’s sport in the Northern Beaches. Belrose has been running these growing competitions for over 20 years. It relies on help from teams and players to succeed. Thankfully with Vicki at the helm Belrose Touch continues to grow. This year the Board gained two new Directors from the Junior grades Deborah Kennedy & Pete Asprey both have contributed greatly and we are hoping they will be around for many years Social functions are hard to get numbers these days but Deb & Pete combined with Tim Gee the Sydney Shield Coach to organised a very successfully end of season event at Balgowlah RSL Barry Johnson also organised a successful event for the 1967 A Grade Premiers and Life members This was combined with a Masters game against Narrabeen a Lionel Watts before a Sydney Shield Game. I thank all the Board Members Scott Collins Sean Wilson Barry Johnson Mark Abrahams Deborah Kennedy Peter Asprey for making life a bit easier on the Board this year The Players Coaches Mangers Trainers Mums and Dads that support the Club are the Club and to all Thank you for your efforts in 2017 We must find ways to ensure Rugby League is not member of the throwaway society but a builder of passions and character for a lifetime

SYDNEY SHIELD TEAM REPORT

This is the fifth year Belrose have played in the NSW Sydney Shield Competition with Independent Game Video ,Ground Manager & Interchange officials while the home team is required to pay for a doctor. The team is a mixture of local players and those who have joined the Club over the years. Again this year we continued with a successful arrangement with Concord Glebe and had a number of players added during the year. Belrose entered the competition to ensure that local players can strive to the highest level NSWRL have money to invest in the competition while the Junior League is limited

This year we were fortunate to have Ian McKenzie & Michael Bate helping with the fundraising Ian ran another successful Sponsors raffle and managed to get a number of new sponsors onboard..

All our sponsors are listed on our website and Major sponsors are at the front of this report .Without all the financial support we would not have been able to enter a team in this Competition.

The team has a small group of helpers Mark Abrahams & Scott Collins as level 2 first aiders are always available for game days and often at training to assist & advise players. Paul Gosling who is always around at training and games days remains a legend to all Senior players. Coach Tim Gee in his first year was great for the group. As a highly qualified Coach and a former Belrose Player he fitted in straightaway and always had something new for the players.

Jimmy Curtis and Tea Noovao were there all year to help at Training & play a part as trainers during game days. Michael Bate was a enthusiastic supporter and was available at most games to help with Stats and wash jumpers while Ian Mckenzie was always around to help.

The all important game days at Lionel watts were always enjoyable especially thanks to the help in the Bar & Canteen. Thank you to all those who helped in those areas.

Most of our homes games were promoted by Triple HHH FN 100.1 and again thank you to Tony Dozen and his team.

This year the Sydney Shield was a 12 team competition and Belrose completed the season after many ups and downs in 7th position. Belrose played East Campbelltown last years premiers in the first final play off despite beating them at Lionel Watts 6 weeks before we could not do it in the final.

Belrose had a first round washout and were very lucky to beat new comer Moorebank in the 2nd round. The 3 round was outstanding when we accounted for Guildford 40 nil at Guildford. Unfortunately Asquith got us on a Friday night at Lionel Watts in our first home game The team had a number of great wins at home but it was the away game against Mounties that broke our spirits Belrose were on top of 2nd place Mountie’s for 78 minutes and they scored 2 tries to in 2 minutes to take the lead and win 22-18.

Another disappointed was coming up with a draw in the last round against 3rd place Wentworthville at Ringrose park.

At the end of the Season we saw Christian Bate awarded the Sydney Shield Player of the year at NSWRL gala Brad Fidler award night at Star City

Christian also is playing lead up games for Italy while David Marando has again made the USA world cup side.

Yes were many up and down but with Coach Tim Gee committed to go again Belrose will be up to the challenge in 2018

A GRADE TEAM REPORT

While it was a tough year for the A-Grade with injury and the retirement of a number of the experienced players from last year, there was plenty of the mighty Belrose spirit shown from the core playing group and from the younger guys coming up from last years U19’s. The boys always showed massive heart and pride in the jersey, even when undermanned and they were always up for the challenge, never taking a backward step. A greater commitment to training would have improved our results with our completion rate forcing us to defend multiple sets way too often to make us competitive, particularly when the game was on the line. This an area that can be easily improved with training in numbers and is a must for next year. A massive thanks to Tim Gee for his help and support and to the Sydney Shield who really showed a Club first attitude with the Senior teams training as a squad throughout the year. This really helped develop Club spirit with the younger guys gaining valuable experience and advice from Tim and the senior Shield players while having a number of the Shield players help out the A-Grade during the year was most appreciated. Thanks to Scott Collins, Liam Alder, Liam Jones, Mark Abrahams and Goso for their help with the team this year and to Tom Nugent for keeping us super organised as Team Manager along with Eric for ensuring team spirit was alive and well with after game refreshments and valued advice. Also really appreciated Scott’s time and effort with the A-Grade this year, particularly given his many other commitments to the Club and also to Matt Nugent for his support as Captain and as a well deserved leader of the team. Thanks also to the “semi-retired” boys that jumped in and helped out during the year when desperately needed and to the U17’s that helped out later in the year, all playing up with distinction. Finally, congratulations to the inspirational Tom Betts for reaching the 250 game milestone this year and his well deserved selection in the Shield side for the last few games where he showed how plenty of heart and determination against much bigger opposition can overcome any obstacle. Harry Georgas Coach

17 Belrose Rugby League Football Club Annual Report 2017

UNDER 17s TEAM REPORT

2017 was my first year in charge of the boys and although on paper it doesn’t look like we had the greatest season there are definitely a lot of positives to take out of it. I didn’t know any of the boys prior to taking up the role of coaching them and they really are a great bunch of guys and it would be really great to see them all continue on with the club to play next season and into the A grade and Sydney Shield teams into the future. With better preparation and a little bit of depth this team has the capability of beating any team in the competition.

I took the team on from Dean Griffiths who has done a great job keeping these boys together. Without Griffo there wouldn’t have been a side and with the junior rugby league struggling on the Northern Beaches as it currently is, are lucky to have someone like Griffo around to keep these boys playing rugby league and involved with such a great club. Griffo managed the team this season so was still actively involved which was greatly appreciated.

I also had quite a number of older Belrose boys who have been around the club for many years come up to training and on games days which was great help. Special thanks to Luke Betts and Ryan Mawhinney who took control of the boys for 3 weeks when I was overseas, as well as James Cable, Ben Pickering and Phil Domjen who all assisted at training and on game days and to Sean Wilson for strapping the boys and being the first aid trainer. I’d also like to thank Scotty Collins, Eric Galloway, the Board of Directors, and all other volunteers who donate their time to contribute to such a successful club.

Unfortunately the scorecard for most games didn’t go our way this year however this doesn’t provide a true indicator of the teams gutsy efforts which they put in each week in throughout the season. Majority of the matches we played this year we were either playing short or without any reserves and would come up against sides who would have a bench of more than 4 players. In these matches, we would be right in it for the first 3 quarters of the match until the boys would run out of puff at the back end of the match.

At the beginning of the season we were not sure whether there was going to be a competition as there were only three teams from the Manly competition, with the North Sydney competition not being able to field any teams and a forth Manly team not being allowed to play due to disciplinary issues. With NSWRL taking charge of the competition, we merged with the Balmain competition, and with the starting date pushed forward we only had a handful of days to recruit a team and prepare for our first match. We managed to scrap together to come up against the Manly Development team in the Beacon Hill Bears, who we ended up going down to however showed patches of great potential in which the side has.

The next two matches we came up against Narraweena and Harbord where in both matches they showed great efforts throughout of the match. We didn’t play to our potential in the first half against Narraweena however came out in the second half to fight their way back into the game to level scores before Narraweena scored a couple of late tries. The boys came out firing against their rivals in Harbord the following week where the first half was sensational going into half time in the lead, to end up going down 18-28 only due to a lack of fitness not to a lack of effort.

Not having a proper preparation to the season came back to haunt us as we were struck with several injuries across the board and unfortunately this lead to us not being able to field a side for a couple of weeks. Once a couple boys came back we managed to scrap 11 players together to take on North Ryde out at their home ground TG Milner. Lining up against a 6 man bench the

18 Belrose Rugby League Football Club Annual Report 2017

UNDER 17s TEAM REPORT

boys fired up and had a sensational win 32-28. This was backed up the following week by another great performance to go down 30-32 to Narraweena with only 10 players. With the injury toll which hit us after these matches the moral of the boys was down and a lot of them were not enjoying running out to get bashed week in week out. As a team there was the decision to fold (without telling the junior league), however would keep training to keep the boys together with the hopes of getting a team for potentially another game towards the end of the year and to start building a side for next year from it.

There was a Belrose Eagles old boys day that was organised for the last week of the competition where they needed us to play in between the golden oldies and the Sydney Shield. It was great effort for the boys to come back and we managed to do some recruiting to play two matches towards the end of the season. After not playing for a month we came up against Narraweena again with only 11 players to put in an outstanding effort where the boys showed a lot of pride in the Belrose jersey with the effort they put in. They followed this up by the best match they played all season in front of a big crowd at home. We managed to have a two man bench to come up against Five Dock who ended up taking out the premiership. We went in with the lead at half time with for Five Dock to only score a couple late tries at the back end of the game when the boys ran out at steam. It was great for the team to be able to meet many of the older Belrose boys and to get up into the clubhouse for the presentation at the end of the day to get a good insight to the Belrose Eagles culture.

The performance they put in against Five Dock without any preparation or training shows the potential these boys have to be an outstanding rugby league team. They are a great bunch of guys and all good mates so will be nothing better to see the boys stick together and step up to the Under 19s competition to prove the capability that they have as a team. I have emphasised to the boys that the Under 19 competition is where they will play their most memorable football where there is a lot of fun to have both on the field and through the social side of things which is what playing rugby league is about. It was a pleasure to coach this team and would be great to see as many players as possible continue to play for the club into the senior teams in the future.

Thanks, Scott Cable.

On the field Brad did all the little things right with great ball handling skills and tackling technique. Towards the end of the season when we were really struggling with numbers Brad was our main recruiter and it if wasn’t for Brad wouldn’t have been able to field a team towards the end. Brad was awarded the Coaches/Clubman Award with his efforts this year and dedication to Belrose Eagles.

One of our more dominant players he slotted into the centres nicely. Unfortunately due to injury Ethan was not able to play towards the back end of the season and was missed out on the field. A very safe defender on the fringe and a very strong ball runner. Would be great to see Ethan run around in the Belrose colours again,

Josh Chignell Tries 1 Goals 0 Total Pts 4 2016 Games 6 Total Club Games 66 Josh had an outstanding year with his performance on a weekly basis a level above. He took the ball forward better than anyone in the competition and lead the charge in defence. A great communicator he was one of the most vocal in the teams and leads by example. He played through a pretty bad shoulder injury at the start of the season proving his commitment to the side. Stepped up and played A grade this year where he got man of the match. Awarded Best Forward through players player votes after having a great year.

Super versatile Henry started off on the wing to be play games at hooker and 5/8 as well in the centres. Fitted in with the boys very nicely and his commitment each week was outstanding. Henry has a lot of natural football ability and is a great asset to the Belrose club.

Aaron Fogarty Tries 6 Goals 0 Total Pts 24 2016 Games 8 Total Club Games 42 Aaron had a fantastic season and was awarded Best and Fairest for his efforts voted by his peers with the most about of players player votes. Started off in the centres and moved to fullback where he excelled. A true leader and very passionate footballer I could not have asked for more of Aaron this season. Aaron had the honours of becoming the team’s Captain later in the season where he really stepped up into the role with consecutive players player going his way. Stepped up and played a couple of games of A grade where he wasn’t out of place.

It would have been great to have Mitch play with us earlier in the year as his performance in the one game he played was outstanding. A great defender I’m sure the boys will be in his ear to put the boots on next season.

Charlie Griffith Tries 1 Goals 0 Total Pts 4 2016 Games 6 Total Club Games 173 Charlie is one of the senior players in the team and leads by example. Charlie would be the strongest and most aggressive defender in the team who would never miss a tackle. I would’ve like to have played Charlie in the number 13 jersey where he is best however for the team had to play Charlie at hooker and in the centres. His pace and natural skill makes him a very versatile footballer.

Played out wide on the wing and also came in and played a couple of games in the centres with some good strong runs. Would be great to see Aiden play again.

Kevin Johnson Tries 0 Goals 0 Total Pts 0 2016 Games 8 Total Club Games 8 Big Kevin had an outstanding season playing in the front row. Unlucky to not get best forward this year he always led the charge with strong runs and hard-hitting defence. Still pretty new to rugby league after only playing a couple of seasons Kevin is always continuing to develop his skills and always asks for feedback to improve his game. A great addition to the team he will only continue to get better.

Ethan Koch Tries 1 Goals 0 Total Pts 4 2016 Games 8 Total Club Games 54 Ethan had a great year playing predominately in the centres however also played on the wing and in the back row. He had a standout game against Narraweena where he played in the backrow and was outstanding. Fearless in defence he would have topped the tackle count backing this up with strong ball running. Very popular amongst the team I was very impressed with the effort which Ethan put in both at training and during each match.

Campsie Manuofetoa Tries 1 Goals 0 Total Pts 4 2016 Games 4 Total Club Games 4 Recruited from Beacon Hill was great to have Campsie playing in the Belrose jersey at the beginning of the year. A hard-hitting strong forward Campsie was a class above most players in the competition and was missed towards the back end of the season when he decided to focus on rugby. Hopefully can be persuaded to come back to Belrose in the near future.

Declan Montgomery Tries 1 Goals 0 Total Pts 4 2016 Games 7 Total Club Games 21 Boris had an outstanding season playing in the backrow. He has a lot of natural rugby league talent and skill which is evident in the way in which he goes about his defence and the lines in which he takes the ball forward. Restricted with work was almost unable to play the back end of the season however managed to get back onto the field which greatly benefited the team. Has a very entertaining personality who would be greatly missed if he is to not return next season.

2017 was initially the most challenging year for our age group. The team barely managed to get on the field prior to the season start but a late opportunity coming from a Manly JRL League meeting meant we managed to link up with Harbord to form a united team for 2017. We ended up with 24 players in the squad with Belrose committing just over half of the squad with 13 players. By combining squads, not only did this guarantee good numbers for the game each week, it meant that a great combination of skills and experience were able to be used in most positions on the field. We became known as “Harbord Belrose United” or “United” for short for our calls of support from our spectators. The coaching was handled exceptionally well in a joint role. Ben Smith from Harbord proved to be a master coach of the technical side of the game and provided a quality method of coaching and skills development, both individual and overall team work. I can’t thank him enough for his contribution. Charles Dunn stepped back into the management role, realising that he wanted to stay part of the team structure, and I am very glad he did, he was just excellent this year in his assistance to establish the joint venture. Of course, the highlight of the year was making it to the Silver Grand Final and winning against Pennant Hills, 24 – 6 for a wonderful victory and to be the Silver premiers of the U15 completion. A great result considering we almost never made it on the park at the start of the year. This year has been the most successful for the playing group, both in their skills development, and of course, winning the Silver Grand Final. We intend to continue with the joint venture during 2018 and this should ensure a quality team for the next season. We are already planning and fundraising for our end of season trip in 2018 which we hope to be a significant trip, preferably to a tropical destination outside Australia. I know many of the team are looking forward to another successful season during 2018.

Liam Adams Games: 17 Total Club Games: 17 Tries: 1 Centre, Wing Liam proved to be a very capable player in his first year in rugby league. He is a natural player with a great attitude and fitted perfectly in the back line. When we moved him to the wing he excelled in this position, making a significant difference to our defence and attack out wide. I was impressed with his ability to read the game and be in the right place to provide support. Liam had a great first season and he will be a valuable part of the team in 2018. Joel Chappelow Games: 17 Total Club Games: 77 Tries: 1 Dummy Half Joel’s love for the game and his enthusiasm was again evident this year. He just loves his footy. Joel played dummy half all year and was one of our best in this role. His probing runs against Berowra proved he had mastered the role. His passing was superb and his tackling has developed to the point he will tackle any size opposition. I was especially pleased for Joel after our Grand Final win, he of all the players in the squad realised the significance of our win after playing since U10s. Great season Joel, simply best yet. Cameron Clark Games: 11 Total Club Games: 11 Wing, Second Row Cameron was a quiet member of the team, but not to be underestimated. As a newcomer to the game, we cautiously gave him greater game time. During our Silver completion playoff at Campbelltown, he nearly was able to swing the game our way, several times. Moved from wing to second row late in the season and I think this is his best area on the field. No doubting Cameron’s enthusiasm, he will be the better for it next season, I hope to see him back again as part of the squad in 2018. Daniel Dunn Games: 17 Total Club Games: 186 Tries: 3 Lock Forward Daniel received our “Most Valuable Player” award for 2017. Daniel’s performance every week was exceptionally consistent, and at a very high level. His defensive technique was just outstanding and he made the difference in many of our games. His attack improved this year and he managed a number of tries to keep us ahead in a number of games. Daniel is an incredibly fit player and has the most determined attitude of any of the players in the squad. A simply great year Daniel, well done. Max Gander Games: 17 Total Club Games: 145 Tries: 6 Fullback Max played the entire year at fullback. His defence in many of our games in this position made a real difference. However, it is his ability to insert himself into our attack just at the right time which saved us on a number of occasions. Max was able to make significant ground nearly every time he had the ball in attack. Max is a strong player and is hard to stop and difficult to get around. He was a valuable member of the united playing squad. He will be back 2018 and will again be a valuable senior member of the team.

Sam Glynn Games: 11 Total Club Games: 11 Forward Sam’s first year at rugby league was very successful. He naturally fitted into the second row and was certainly not afraid of having a go out in the middle. Sam never backed away from the defensive contact that is part of the game. Sam was very enthusiastic and was prepared to have a go, no matter the opposition. He proved to be a great member of our squad and he looked to really enjoy his year. I hope to see Sam back again in 2018 as he will go from strength to strength. Great year Sam. Matthew Hall Games: 15 Total Club Games: 59 Tries: 3 Goals: 26 Five Eighth, Lock Matt’s commitments this year meant he couldn’t get to most of our training this year. However, he is such a competent player, we couldn’t leave him off the field. He proved the difference in many of our games and kicked most of our goals this year with 26 goals. He generally started at five eighth and moved to lock after around 15 minutes most games which proved to be a great combination. I hope to see him back in the squad in 2018, he was essential as part of our winning team for the Grand Final this year. Dane Ratcliffe Games: 14 Total Club Games: 32 Forward Dane really enjoyed his football this year. Whilst I think Dane is more focused on the social side of the game, he was still needed on the field and really showed he was keen to do his best. In some games, he surprised us all with his determined runs and his odd step. Dane needs a new hair dresser, presenting with some strange haircuts this year that I am sure put the opposition off. Great season Dane, see you in 2018. Liam Ryan Games: 14 Total Club Games: 62 Front Row Liam just grew in size in the off season and is a very competitive player, week in and week out. He has a quiet approach to the game until he fires up, once he does, watch out, he is hard to stop. Liam was one of our big guys essential up front to get the ground each set of six. He normally worked as hard as he could and was spent every time he came off. We couldn’t have asked much more from Liam this year. He is keen and always working to improve his game. Liam, a great season, see you in 2018 for another successful season. Ben Watkins. Games: 11 Total Club Games: 142 Tries: 4 Second Row, Five Eighth Ben was clearly the best and fairest in our squad this year, from all the 24 players in the united team, receiving this award at the end of the season. He was captain for most of our games, mainly because of this ability to lead from the front. He again spent a few weeks on the sideline through injury, and we missed him whilst he was off the field. During the Grand Final, he was instrumental in our win as he was in many of his games throughout the season. Ben is a

quality footballer, having his best season ever. Ben, a great year and best yet. Let’s keep you on the park every game next year during the 2018 season. Matthew Watman. Games: 11 Total Club Games: 71 Tries: 1 Wing Matt remained one of our wing men this year, it is his best position. He made quite a difference in some of our games showing great skill in defence during our away game against Pennant Hills earlier in the season. Matt is always keen to do his best on the field and is prepared to have a go when he is needed. His ability to take the heat off the forwards with some dummy half runs early in the tackle count made a difference in a number of our games. Great season Matt and I look forward to seeing you run again in 2018. Kai Wilson Games: 13 Total Club Games: 161 Tries: 4 Dummy Half Kai is a capable player and found himself at dummy half for most of the season. He is very strong and powerful for his age and has great skills. He certainly knows where the try line is as he proved during our fantastic Grand Final win. Congratulations to Kai who passed the 150 club game milestone this year having played for Belrose since under six. Kai was an essential member of our team, always being considered as part of the preferred playing squad. Kai is a great football player, and I hope to see him again in 2018. Josh Zotti Games: 15 Total Club Games: 119 Tries: 4 Front Row Josh was big and strong this year, he proved to be a very powerful forward, generally coming off the bench to make a big difference in our attack mid-way through the first half of most games. When he did, he was hard to stop and was dynamic with his runs. Josh managed a nice dislocated finger vs Berowa in our home game at Harbord, but recovered to come back stronger in his next game. Josh was always part of our preferred squad because of this strength and determination. Josh is a good player and I hope to see him again in 2018.

As my first legitimate coaching job, coming in a few rounds into the season and not having met any of the boys previously, I was unsure of what to expect when stepping in to coach this side. I was met by group of young boys who have an enormous love the sport and were as welcoming to me as I could have hoped with an exceptional training staff behind them. Straight off the bat we came away with 3 wins in a row against some of the competition leaders despite having close to no one on the bench. As I got to know the boys and they got to know me we started to pick up some momentum in the competition and sat comfortably in the top 3. After losing to a few teams I felt we were a lot more talented than, our training sessions became focussed and purposeful. I spoke to a couple of players who I felt needed to help lift this team and explained my expectations. We continued in good form defeating Cromer and earning our way into the semis. Unfortunately after losing to Harbord, we found ourselves in a sudden death playoff for the grand final with, yet again, Cromer. After a questionable first half, the boys fought back to score 16 unanswered points but fell just short after an incredibly gutsy second half which cut our season one game short. From where this group of boys started when I first met them, to where they have ended up as both a team and individual players, I could not be prouder. Towards the back end of the season I sat back and watched these young men go from a team of individuals to a team of mates. Through all the setbacks and adversity they pulled together and gave the 2017 season a red hot shot. I am excited to see what next year has install for this playing group.

Minor Premiers and Premiership Winners – 2017 After several years together, the boys developmentally had the basic platform to enter this season in good shape, as we had worked hard the previous season on setting formation. So, in that regard we were already one step ahead. But we quickly learnt with a loss in the trial game and two subsequent losses in the next two rounds, learning key skills is only one part of how to play footy. Playing as a cohesive team is another. This year we merged the two teams from last year into one team. In a nutshell, they knew their roles within the team and the key was merging it and installing belief. With the grand final victory, this was the culmination of skill, intelligence, mateship resilience and belief. Immensely pleasing for me to see you earn your season and become competition premiers. Not for the glory of a trophy, just the inner belief of you all knowing how to work towards achieving and sharing such a goal. Post the GF game I had a couple of mates who commented on how well the team played and that they were clearly the better side. By that, they meant our boys played for each other. They knew their role and executed their set roles for the team……..better than the other team. After watching the grand final reply a few days ago, I’m even more impressed. So many small things every single player did to create that result! Well done boys. Being a premier player in any given season is the ultimate achievement! In terms of the playing group there was a tonne of emphasis last season about sticking together, because mateships are formed and secured for life during this stage of their lives. That is mostly what you take away – mates and memories. At the beginning of the season we lost a few players, but also gained a few players. To those that stuck solid - you can’t beat loyalty. An awesome and unparralled attribute of a person. In terms of the season, after the first two competition game losses, one could readily think we were in for a long season, but as coaches we knew that we weren’t far off. Losing to Narrabeen in the second round at Lake Park was just a frustration as we played against our game plan and executed very poorly. ***To reorientate, the boys we were challenged to do their very best. We stuck solid and tweaked a few things. Training attitude lifted and the punish pit worked a treat! Everyone learnt complaints were just noise and an excuse to bug out. In short, the boys got honest with themselves and started owning their mistakes and started to honestly evaluate their performances and efforts. Being fair dinkum was part of their mindset and it was the cornerstone of the season. They played with passion. Emphasis was on executing what we talked about and playing to a strategic plan. Every training session we took some time to sit and discuss the previous game, and what we wanted to work on. The boys quickly learnt their minds were one of their biggest weapons and the real growth started. In R3 & R4 the team pulled the trigger and booked back to back wins. That placed us at 50% win/loss ratio, and as a statistic it was not overly impressive. But we had reorientated, particularly in how we approached and played the matches. With some stylish

33 Belrose Rugby League Football Club Annual Report 2017

UNDER 12 TEAM REPORT footy being played and a real competitive edge starting to show. A belief that if they didn’t get the rub of the green or the refs call, they would find a way to be on top at the final whistle. At this point I sensed we were in for a good year and I chatted with the team about bringing back someone who needed to be a part of the season = Josh “Tansky” Watkins. An email was dispatched and I received a reply form his Mum saying, “It’s funny you’ve made contact because Josh was only asking this morning if it’s not too late to sign up and play for Belrose” With Tanks on-board we rounded out a squad of 17 with Pete Xegas also joining after realising he loved his rugby league. In terms of team make up we set a number of combinations which allowed us to click players in and out of positions. This year our edge forward positions could be filled by a certain style of player, depending on who we were playing that week. For instance, a defensive player to help plug the defensive line or an attacking player with speed to create second phase play. A big thanks to all those boys that allowed me to shuffle them around. As a coach versatility is valuable, meaning you’re a real asset to the team. R5 continued with another win and a run of 6 straight. When in R7 we suffered a marginal loss to Harbord 10-12, bringing us back to reality and reminding us that premierships are hard to win. The very next game we demolished last year’s grand finalists – Avalon, on their home turf 28-6. Again, the most impressive part was how we’d adopted and executed our game plan that caught my attention. That very first try off some set play we’d worked on all week I couldn’t stop smiling. Next up in R11 was Narrabeen who beat us in R2 and it was a top of the table clash with the winner earning bragging rights. We rose to the occasion and hammered them 32-8. At this stage, we had beaten every team in the comp, we were now competition leaders and we’d accumulated a very healthy for and against. (256-72) Further in R14 we achieved another season goal of holding a team to zero. Clearly, we were the team to beat and we had every team targeting us. We suffered a number of injuries as most teams do late in the season. But our composure and belief allowed us to become minor premiers in the final round against Avalon. A low scoring 6–6 draw but proved our resilience with a super defensive effort. We didn’t give an inch and that earnt us the minor premiership. At this stage, I’d noticed our team were starting to think more about the opposition and focussing on who was, and who wasn’t playing (due to injuries). The major semi saw us suffer a loss to Narrabeen 10-12. A game we created more opportunities to win and just couldn’t convert the victory. With one missed conversion being the difference………although 2 points felt like 20 and it cut deeply. In the following Preliminary Final we scrapped away with Avalon. Struggling to play any football and suffering poor field position for most of the game. But all champion teams know how to win and with 5 minutes in extra time you pulled off an ugly (but fantastic) win. I know that is relative and what was really on display was the team we never gave up and somehow came out in front 16-10 in extra time, booking a spot in the GF!

Our preparation throughout the finals series remained the same although we took advantage of two sessions a week to allow us to fine tune a few key skills we needed to get right so we would be 100% set. On Grand Final day, the teams body language and focus was ‘on’ and the game is now history. Our first half was a good as you will get with the execution beautiful to watch. A near faultless 20mins with every player focussed on doing their job the best they could. Decisions were fantastic and we held great field position and created several opportunities. We came in all over Narrabeen and lead 6-0 at half time. As expected, Narrabeen regrouped at half time and came out and pressed hard. We managed to score a second try and take our lead to 10-0. However, they managed to claw field position and move us back onto our own line. Our tenacious attitude across the park managed to allow us to bravely hold until we started to physically get worn down. This was a great game to watch but from a player’s perspective it was demanding. Our boys dropping but getting back up and going again. Ultimately, they scored back to back unconverted tries to place the game on a knife edge at 10-8. Momentum flowed back and forth and we pushed into their territory and we produced a cross field ‘skitz’ kick to connect with our backline and score with 90 seconds to go. Game over and the mighty U12 Roses are premiers for the season. 16-8 I’d like to thank all the wonderful contributors to the team Box, Ian, Nic, Dave, Chris, Phil, Fitz, Peter and the parent group filling roles when required. To our John Bull jersey sponsor – Marty and Brian – kudos to you guys. To the club directors, Jake Morro, Josh many thanks for making some time for our juniors. They all appreciate it and grow from your effort/s. Lastly thanks to all the parents for enabling you kids to become better players and people. See you all next season. Have a terrific Summer. Jersey #1 Cooper Ballesty 2017 Games 16 Career Games 85 2017 Tries 1 Coops or “Ballo” loves his team and the club. Gets to training and always has a smile on his dial. Playing on his favoured left wing he knows how to hold his position in defence and how best to take his opposite number down in any way possible. With our team playing with width in the second half of the season you got into some space and with more refinement from the team you’ll be icing a few tries next season.

Jersey #2 Riley Barwell 2017 Games 17 Career Games 132 2017 Tries 24 2017 Goals 7 We are blessed with many players with leadership qualities, but you will not get a better captain than this bloke. I don’t embellish how well he plays week to week but I say a few words here. If I was young again I’d love to play with him. He obviously leads from the front and his workload is enormous. He is tough, ultra consistent, unselfish and understands the responsibility of captain and on and off the field. If you’re a stats person he led the comp for total point score and was leading competition try scorer. Having the skill to play on his opposite side we shifted him back to the left for the final two games and he scored a double in the GF. A wonderful season as a player and a deserved premiership as Captain. Jersey #3 Kai Connors 2017 Games 16 Career Games 93 2017 Goals 9 Another fantastic year from Kai. The first to training and the last to leave. As I said last year he eats and breathes footy. A smiling assassin of sorts as he picks teams apart and orchestrates our attack – so well you hardly recognise it. This became evident when he was inured late in the season and the team didn’t operate with the usual effect. Tough player who can take the ball to the line and through the line. He has an innate ability to always make the right decision. Big milestone coming up next year for 100 games

Jersey #4 Ollie Fitzsimmons 2017 Games 15 Career Games 43 2017 Tries 1 2017 Goals 2 Ollie is another player that loves his footy and always gets to training. His development is starting to really show. Joking with his mates is a staple and I particularly loved the fact that during a particular game this season his team mates rose up around him. An upstanding moment for our team and Ollie you were the catalyst. We love having you in our team.

Jersey #5 Kane Julius 2017 Games 17 Career Games 17 2017 Tries 14 2017 Goals 7 His first season with the Roses and a terrific addition to the squad in terms of playing ability and personality. KJ quickly found his position at first receiver and then rotated back to R1 (with Xavier) as our only two left handers in the team. Fantastic first year with the Roses KJ and I look forward to seeing you carve up teams for years to come.

Jersey #6 Troy Ignacio 2017 Games 18 Career Games 105 2017 Tries 2 Troy grew enormously again this year. One of our best trainers and it shows. After taking big steps last year, this year he came out and played some big roles. Easily slotted into the backline to stiffen up the defence or play as a leading or edge forward. He goes out and hammers the opposition. When watching the GF he had a cracker game. If he made a mistake he didn’t stand around kicking dirt, he instantly moved on and made the next tackle. Great footballer.

Jersey #7 Austin Lynch 2017 Games 18 Career Games 143 2017 Tries 13 2017 Goals 3 Last year Aussie displayed the qualities of a specialised fullback and this year with 13 on the field allowed him to play in that dedicated role. He didn’t disappoint. Always safe under a high ball, consistent great tackling at the last line of defence, and his kick returns are the best in the comp. Always making a minimum 10m, along with many incisive runs back down the other end of the field. He knows his job and runs plenty of lines for Kai and KJ, in particular his inside line off the hip was super effective and will continue to cause defenders nightmares for many years to come. A great result to get the second highest number of team tries from fullback.

Jersey #8 Xavier McLean 2017 Games 18 Career Games 75 2017 Tries 4 2017 Goals 11 All teams need organisers who can chat and place emphasis on what the team needs to do. Xav gets busy around the ruck and has the ability to effectively distribute ball either side of the ruck with accuracy and speed. Lost his running game mid season but found it during the finals campaign and scored the first try in the GF. Loves footy and playing with his mates. Always looking after his mates and always keeping up morale on the field. A great team player.

Jersey #9 Kane Morse 2017 Games 15 Career Games 27 2017 Tries 1 How lucky we are to have players like Kano. He rarely misses a training session and loves to get onto the field and play footy. Another who loves playing with his mates. He does everything you ask of him and has massive crack, a quiet achiever. With that type of attitude, you will continue to grow and enjoy many good seasons ahead.

Jersey #10 Cooper Stapleton 2017 Games 17 Career Games 43 2017 Tries 4 One of the bruise brothers that made up the best pack in the comp. Stapes was extremely coachable and a player who just love his footy. He held the vice captaincy all year and thrived on it. I’d asked him for full consistency each game and he delivered. A hard yards player who kept hammering into the opposition in attack and especially terrorising in defence. Started to get an effective offload going and his tackling this year was superb. I look forward coaching you again next season

Jersey #11 Harley Moane 2017 Games 17 Career Games 17 2017 Tries 8 A severely cut finger kept Harley from playing a single game for us last season and judging by what he brought to the team this year we missed out in spades. A very crafty ball carrier, he also possesses some “Toovey like” defence. Front on, side on or bootlaces you have a seriously impressive highlight reel. Based on that we decided to switch you from a five eighth to a dummy half and that was the balance the team needed. We hit our straps from that point. Rarely missed a tackle. Excellent year mate.

Jersey #12 Aiden Barker Leary 2017 Games 18 Career Games 74 2017 Tries 2 Aiden played some early games around the ruck but we started to position him in the superior position, as a jet shoed winger. As a coach and player, I think we both got frustrated in you not receiving earlier ball, to allow you to burn some defenders. But that will come as the team continues to learn and execute offensive play. When that clicks you will head to the top of the leading try scorers list. Involvement is crucial when playing wide and you managed to learn find the ball and had some impressive plays during the finals games. Well done.

Jersey #13 Ben Dwyer 2017 Games 18 Career Games 18 2017 Tries 1 Benny came into our side and hit the ground running – literally. Loves to run wide of the ruck and has the ability to split defenders. He can play as a five eighth but it’s fairly evident if he continues to learn his footy he will become a ball playing forward. He started to really learn his place in the team and I’m looking forward to seeing him playing again next season.

Jersey #14 Jake Bertram 2017 Games 8 Career Games 22 Had some wonderful runs out wide as he surprised us with his speed early in the season. Another who was affected by injury in the second half of the season but when he was playing was always putting his best foot forward for the team.

Jersey #15 Ty Pounsett 2017 Games 15 Career Games 49 2017 Tries 4 2017 Goals 2 Ty learnt plenty last year. Gifted with strong attacking skills, he hit this season with strong commitment and defensive grit. Pushed his way to the front of the queue in terms of team selection and he provided me the option of playing him as an attacking forward or anywhere in the backline. Was a handful everywhere and in every game he played a major contribution to the team’s subsequent premiership. Your injury in the preliminary is all part of the resilience curve.

Jersey #16 Josh Watkins 2017 Games 12 Career Games 41 2017 Tries 5 2017 Goals 3 Josh has a plethora of skills and all the attributes you want in a footballer. The obvious being strength and courage, but he also often glues the team together with leadership. Above all he is a thinking footballer who contributes to game strategy. Tanksy thrives on a high workload and is a crowd favourite. Have no doubt he will be a Roses legend. Thanks for coming back to the team! Thanks for leading the team song! Every team wishes to have a player like you. Josh was presented the game ball from the Grand Final – a fitting tribute to his contribution to the team throughout the season.

Jersey #24 Peter Xegas 2017 Games 11 Career Games 21 2017 Goals 1 Pete is a fantastic player who is gaining the confidence he needs to dominate his opposing player. He regularly looks to feed his surrounding runners, plus also has the ability to carry the ball strongly into the defensive line. For years to come he will be someone who players hate to mark. Had a super second half of the season, especially in the finals games. A gritty, hard working player.

Jersey #XX Dylan McQuillan (U11 in 2017) 2017 Games 1 2017 Tries 1 Thanks to Dyl for lending a hand in the final round of the competition when we were missing 4 players, and making sure we had an extra player. He did not miss out either, carving out a trademark try and slotting back into our team structure and set plays.

Another Great Season

2017 season started with 16 boys which meant one team and 5 boys on the bench each week

This was new for me and proved to be quite a challenge, rotating boys, trying to keep all hap- py and still fielding a competitive side.

The season was a mix of wins and losses and the boys responded accordingly each week rising to the challenges that lay before them.

The usual rivalries came into play with Narrabeen and North Curl Curl being the main ones .

Early in the season we drew with Narrabeen 24 all but beat them convincingly at home 40-6 towards the semis , which is always good.

North Curl Curl who beat us in the GF in 2016 were always going to be tough. We played them at Rueb Hudson and our boys played the best footy I've seen them play in 6 seasons rattling NCC but going down 24-18 .Great stuff boys.

As the season progressed we started to find good form and we ended the season in 5th place just out side the top 4 teams.

This meant we played our semis in the maroon plate comp and finished top of our pool with a week off.

We play and beat Avalon and head straight to the Big show and earn another week off.

Grand final sees us lose to Avalon and its season over!!!!

The most important thing the boys took out of this season was their commitment to the rule we started the season with…

NEVER QUIT !!!

And I'm pleased to say they NEVER did.

This season we had 3 new boys join us

Lachlan Finch Oliver Beck Khel Gilbert

Combined with some very committed whites boys

Austin Stappleton Riley Mock Noah Fallon

And of course Dylan McQuillan who stayed in the u11s from last season.

All the boys proved to be valuable assets and grew in skill and experience throughout the year.

Jett plays all his games the same way ,Very Very quickly….. The stand out this year for Jett is his defence and many times he cut kids down with perfect tackles and speed stopping a lot of tries and working well at the back and on the fringes where it counts. Another great year Jett well done

Matt Bassett 49 Games This season saw Matt find anew role in FR. Riley Mock 26 Games Rileys power and speed saw him slot right back into this side and with a new found confidence as well Defence –Outstanding / Attack – Even better and you will continue to grow into a great footy player in years to come.

The best thing about Riley is when I give him a job I know it will be done and with devastating results for the opposition — Well done Riles Great season.

Ethan Gray 77 Games Ethan continues to grow as a great player and this season was no exception. In his pivotal role at DH Ethan helps set up plays and makes valuable yards when required. Ethan is very safe under the ball and always runs it back hard. Ethan's goal kicking is also amongst the best. Great season Ethie!!!!!!!! Keep it Up

Toby Ewans 42 games This season saw Toby's trademark hard running up the middle continue. He is devastating with the ball and always carries a few defenders with him up field. Toby's defence also improved this year and he is always ready to put his body on the line for his team mates.

You continue to grow as a footy player and are a massive part of our team going forward, Well done Tobe's.

Dylan McQuillan 67+ games Dylan stayed in the u11s this season and we are glad he did. Dylan's defence is the standout in his game and you do not want to run at him as many found out this year. A solid performer with a step an offload and a turn of speed ,you had the opposition guessing all year Dylan.

Well done Dyl.

Noah Fallon 35 Games Noah came from the whites and found himself in a pivotal role DH in a tough Maroons competition. Undaunted Noah gave all he had each week and never backed away from hid defensive duties. Great hands and the ability to read the play are Noah's strengths and he continues to grow as a player. Great season Noah

Khel Gilbert 17 games Khel came to us this year from cromer and he is more than welcome. Deceptive running and a killer tackle are Khel's strong points and he did not disappoint this year slotting straight into the team. Khel has a great understanding of the game and reads the play well. He is an asset to the team and always does what is asked of him — Great season Khel Well done

Lachlan Finch 15 games Finchy was the other new boy this year and came to give rugby league a try. Its tough up the middle in Rugby League and you always gave it your best Finchy — Well done.

Koby Bryant 28 games Koby started the season as he left off last year with great defence and awesome running. Unfortunately for us Rugby Reps saw Koby leave midseason. Great effort Koby and you are always welcome back

Our season started a little bit slower than we wanted to, with the team adjusting and three new players and trying to find their positions in the team.

It was our second year in Mod League this year and the boys were settling into their own groove! The second half of the season they boys were playing as a team and were showing great promise for the finals. Unfortunately we lost a key player with Jet breaking a collar bone and saw us exit the competition. We had a really cracking season with some fantastic wins and some great comradery with the team.

A big thank you to all the parents this year, especially Josh Gaughan for sitting at the table and a very special thank you for the two Jason’s for all your help this season, helping out with coaching and really supporting the team.

Hope you all had an enjoyable season and return for the 2018 season.

2017 What another great year of footy. As every year when it starts it is soon over, well that’s what it feels like to me. The under 9’s team had a very rocky start having only 9 players (and then losing Max after 2 weeks). We could have 11 on the field but required minimum of 8. At this stage I really thought it would be a tough year for the boys. But luckily enough we ended up with solid team of 12 with 4 of the under 8’s stepping up. Through the season our team grew in skill and talent, working very hard on core drills making us very competitive and matching it with the best. There were a few big changes from mini to mod this year. First big shock was the size of the field. First game they looked a little lost but after a couple of games they were all spreading out better. The boys soon knew how to attack and defend every square inch of the field. Overall the under 9’s worked really hard getting back to the basics at the start and spending a lot of time on tackling techniques and also working out where everyone is suited on the field. I could not be more proud of these boys, as the season progressed so did their skill level and ability. As years before there were certain clubs we could not beat but this year we got the upper hand. Finals soon started and we beat Curl Curl in the first elimination semi to move onto next round but unfortunately bowing out to Narraweena. All the boys and staff can hold their heads up high from where we started to where we ended up…….Better – Stronger – Together. I would like to thank Gary Pickworth for helping us put our best foot forward and getting back to basics with tackling techniques. Thank you to the Brunch Bar for donating $10 voucher each week for the man of match. Big thank you to Janelle Jordan for being a super manager and making sure everyone gets the necessary information to get their kids to training and to the games. Thanks big Pete for your input at training and those big game talks in the sheds before the home game battles. Special thanks to Scott Greig for stepping up to trainer / assistant coach position. This year it has been awesome having you there with me teaching the boys how to improve their game and just sharing the experience. You have proved yourself to be a great asset to the team. Lastly, thank you to all the parents for getting the kids to training, games and also helping out with club duties at home games with BBQ and canteen time. As you all know we had a tough start to the season but the team spirit definitely shone through and we got the kids to the semi-finals. Bring on next year!

Byron Jordan (16 games this year, 51 total) Byro has had a cracking year playing most of the first season at dummy half and scoring a number of tries from this position. You have learnt to read the play this year and also your defence has improved. And you hit the milestone this year of 51 games! Well done mate.

Lachlan Greig (15 games this year, 40 in total) Lachie your game has gone to the next level. Even at times I Know you wonder why you didn’t get man of match, well it hasn’t gone unnoticed. I could give it to you each week. You are the most consistent; your defence is great and becoming more dominant. Where I think you really excel is in a full back position confidently catching the ball and getting us out of their try line or running it up through the field and don’t forget being our number 1 kicker. Well done mate.

Jonathon Armatas (16 games this year, 50 in total) Johnny, your best year yet. I remember early last year you struggled at times with tackling but now you are one of our best, strongest and on point defenders in the team. You played most of the year at first receiver and did a great job at it. You gave all your team mates direction and kept our best foot forward. I love watching you play, you give every game your all even when you are not well. With your last game against Narraweena your best (and apologies for not celebrating at the time but this was your 50th game!). Well done mate.

Archie Asprey (15 games this year, 48 in total) Archie, one of the most thankful kids I have ever trained, shaking my hand and thanking me after every training session and game. Awesome. Your running this year has definitely been your best. Running hard onto the ball and then being hard to tackle. As one of the tallest boys on our team with loads of skill your defence grew stronger throughout the year. It’s been a pleasure to coach you. Well done mate.

Jhai Ballesty (14 games this year, 61 in total) Jhai you are a true footballer. Tough, quick, strong and you get even more focussed on how to win even when the chips are down. The players and I value your part in the team. You have amazing skill in scoring tries and equally amazing skill in stopping tries from being scored by the opposition. This year I feel you have been more focused and taken every training session seriously which has showed this year on the field. You’re a gun Jhai. Well done mate.

Angus Milne (15 games this year, 40 in total) Angus wow wow wow. You can hold your head up high mate. The growth in skill and confidence since last year is absolutely awesome. When you’re focused, your timing is brilliant. Your team mates and I have witnessed at training some of the biggest tackles we have ever seen in under 9’s history. Even you were shocked at times. As one of our biggest boys in the pack, you are up there as one of our quickest, which is a deadly combo. Also it was great to rely on your goal kicking which just got better and better throughout the year. Can’t wait for next year. Well done mate.

Kobe McCann (15 games this year, 40 in total) Kobe this was definitely your best year. You have a natural step which makes you hard to defend against. As one of our tallest and biggest players your hit ups were a lot stronger this year with your fend being also hard to get past. I feel you played better when you took on the first receiver role, getting more ball time and directing next plays. And keep working on your kicking in the off season. Look forward to seeing you play next season. Well done mate.

Sam Maskell (13 games this year, 13 in total) OMG. I can’t believe this was your first year of rugby league. You fit in with the others like you had played with them since under 6’s. Maybe because of your love for the game and the Rabbitohs. Sam you are a great kid to coach, everything that is shared from staff or players you definitely give it your all. Also you are a strong runner, breaking the line and snagging a few tries with your efforts. Can’t wait to next year. Well done mate.

Max Murphy (2 games this year, 26 in total) It was sad to see you leave mate. At the time, the smallest on the field but definitely our best defender, old school and text book. Also you are a great runner with the ball. All the best mate it has been a pleasure. Well done mate.

Billy Harland (14 games this year for under 9’s, also played in under 8’s) It was great to see you have the courage and skill to move up from under 8’s. It’s always refreshing to see someone who loves and breaths footy like yourself. On the field you are as fast as a cheater with confidence to take players front on even though they are bigger and older. Can’t wait to see you running off the end of ball plays next year where I think you will be unstoppable and uncatchable. Well done mate.

Casper Walker (13 games this year for under 9’s, also played in under 8’s) It was great to see you have the courage and skill to move up from under 8’s. What blows me away is this is your first year of footy and not only have you played up an age but I can confidently say you are up there in being one of the best player in the under 9’s team. You are a player who can play any position from dummy half, first receiver, forward or back and do it well. You have a natural talent. Can’t wait to see you next year. Well done mate.

Dylan Moore (13 games this year for under 9’s, also played in under 8’s) It was great to see you have the courage and skill to move up from under 8’s. Dylan (nickname CRUMBS), you are one of the smallest players for under 8’s but oh my gosh you can match it in under 9’s. I’m sure this is from your Jiu Jitsu back ground. Dylan I cannot fault the way you defend. It’s strong, hard, 100% effort and great to see those unbelievable try savers. You are the most honest, considerate, cooperative and courteous player. Looking forward to see you play again next year. Well done mate.

Isaac Bergmann (9 games this year for under 9’s, also played in under 8’s) It was great to see you have the courage and skill to move up from under 8’s. Isaac I love watching players who wear their heart on their sleeve. When things are good, you’re going off like we have won the game but when things are not so good you’re patting team mates on back and telling them “we’ve still got this, come on mate”. You are inspirational to all around you. Watching you in one of our first games, hitting the ball up and planting the defender on his behind was proof of what you are about when you are on the field (bring it on). Definitely our best defender and hard as nails. See you next year. Well done mate.

Thank you all for allowing me to be a part of this year Belrose under 8s squad for season 2017. Congratulations to our 50 gamers, Jamie Mauro, Russell Baker and Dylan Moore. Outstanding effort and you should be very proud of your commitment to the teams. Thank you boys. There are a few people that I need to make special time to thank. First, our coach JP Drysdale. It was great to have JP on board, not just to help at training and on game days, but to able to bounce ideas off each other throughout the year is an immense help. It also allowed for us to be able to spend time with lads one-on-one which is invaluable. Thanks JP. To our manager Andrew Baker for taking up the reigns again thank you. It’s a bigger role than people think and I thank Andrew for being at the meetings I couldn’t get too and taking on the mounds of email that allow me to my job as coach. Thanks mate from the bottom of my heart. A big shout out to all the parents who helped out this season. For every parent who happily grabbed a tackling-bag, pad, cone or ball. Had the boys at their games first thing Saturday morning in the middle of winter I thank you. I’ve been so lucky to have a group of parents that have be as supportive as you have over the season. Thanks again. To my boy, Conor, who showed up to training sessions, games, setup drills, and ran the water, kicking-tee and messages. Thanks to you. A really big thank you to our major sponsor, Matt Anderson from Boxing Fitness / Surf Skool. Thanks for your support and being a great guy to go with it.

Oliver Anderson – Games 13 Tries – 4/Goals 3 - Club Games 27 - Club Tries 7/Goals 5 A great second season for Ollie. Ran hard every time he received the ball and wasn’t afraid to put his head where he shouldn’t in defence. Tough little guy who always bounced back after getting a knock. Be proud of your season Ollie, and I look forward to you playing next season.

Russell Baker - Games 14 - Tries 4 - Club Games 58 - Club Tries 9 Congratulations Russell on reaching 50 games for the club. Huge milestone. Little man with big passion for playing this game. Always manages to jag a try against our tougher opponents. Nice season Russell.

Isaac Bergmann – Games 9 Tries – 15/Goals 3 - Club Games 31 - Club Tries 24/Goals 4 I said it last year and I’ll say it again, Isaac’s enthusiasm for the game is wonderful. Tackled all game, and tackled hard. He has the ability to take control of a game, both in attach and defence, it’s fun to watch.

Deacon Clark – Games 7 - Tries 5/Goals 4 - Club Games 81 – Club Tries 25/Goals 7 Deacon came on strong in the second-half of the season and grabbed a bag-full of tries as a reward for a strong season. Began to read the opposition defence and took his opportunities when they came. Oh yeah … 81 games at age 8!!! Great effort.

John Drysdale – Games 13 - Tries 1/Goals 1 – Club Games 44 – Club Tries 18/Goals 4 John is a wonderful player to coach. He has an eagerness to train hard and has a positive attitude on the field. Sidney Forsyth – Games 9 - Tries 2/Goals 2 – Club Games 9 – Club Tries 2/Goals 2 Another to start this season. Sidney showed outstanding speed scoring tries straight through the middle. Billy Harland – Games 9 – Tries 19/Goals 2 - Club Games 24 – Club Tries 45/Goals 4 Billy’s an absolute try scoring machine, no doubt about that. And in full-flight is a fantastic sight to see. His defence really lifted this season and he should be really proud of working hard both sides of the ball. Jumped up a grade to play fulltime for the Under 9s and more than held his own with the older boys. Congratulations on a great season.

Liam Hyde – Games 12 - Tries 2/Goals 2 – Club Games 37 –Club Tries 4/Goals 2 Liam’s fence at the end of the season was outstanding. Getting off the line and tackling with your teammates was great to watch. Liam’s confidence with and without the ball certainly grew as the season progressed. Let’s keep that confidence going for next season.

Christian Ignacio – Games 12 - Tries – 9/Goals 2 – Club Games 67 – Club Tries 46/Goals 2 Tackling machine and damaged the opposition line every time he hit up. Consistently good and developed a great offload that lead to 3 try assists. It’s been a pleasure to coach you Christian.

Jed Pickering – Games 7 Tries – 2 - Club Games 7 - Club Tries 2 Jed joined the squad mid-season, but he certainly didn’t play like it. Ran the ball hard and tackled even harder. Jed moved off the line quick in defence and chased everything. A great “never give up” attitude.

Cruize Lodding - Games 13 - Tries – 2/Goals 2 – Club Games 31 – Club Tries 3/Goals 2 Gutsy player that ran the ball hard to the line every week. Cruize spent a lot of time at dummy-half and first receiver and his skills certainly developed as the season progressed. Absolute pleasure to coach.

Jamie Mauro – Games 10 - Tries – 3/Goals 2 – Club Games 58 – Club Tries – 23/Goals 4 Outstanding achievement to reach 50 games Jamie. Love watching you decimated opponents with, and without, the ball. Tough guy that does everything with a smile. It’s truly been my pleasure to have had the privilege to you in those 50 games. Thanks Jamie

Dylan Moore – Games 16 - Tries 5/Goals 1 - Club Games 53 – Club Tries 12/Goals 2 Another 50 Gamer. Outstanding. Dylan bleeds Red and Gold. A pleasure to coach as he is eager to learn. I know I said it last year but Dylan is so consistent and is a great team player. And he does it all with a smile. A great young man to coach. Congratulations on a fantastic year.

Lucas Richardson - Games 13 - Tries 1/Goals 4 – Club Games 31 Club Tries 5/Goals 5 Great to watch Lucas continue where he left off last season. Ran hard with the ball, and like last season, was really unlucky not too get over the line a few more times. A little more self- confidence and you’ll take the world. Nice work mate.

Austin Riley – Games 14 - Tries – 2/Goals 2 – Club Games 26 – Club Tries 4/Goals 6 What a defender! Pops his shoulder and cuts players in half. I’ve honestly not seen a technique as good as Austin’s without watching and old NRL game. Just a great young man to coach.

Cody Taylor - Games 11 - Tries – 5/Goals 1 – Club Games 11 – Club Tries 5/Goals 1 Cody’s first season and, oh my, what a debut! Blew apart defensive lines and if he didn’t score he set up the player to cross the line. We’re losing Cody as he is moving to Queensland, but I’m claiming him for the Blues. A joy to watch.

Casper Walker - Games 9 - Tries – 9/Goals 1 – Club Games 9 – Club Tries 9/Goals 1 I’m looking forward to watching Casper flying down the wing for his beloved Roosters in about 10 years’ time! Flyer and defender we lured away from Union and it’s definitely Union’s loss. Performed outstandingly when he jumped up to play fulltime for the Under 9s. Great season.

Liam Walsh – Games 12 - Tries 1/Goals 1 – Club Games 38 – Club Tries 7/Goals 1 Great to watch Liam continue grow as the season progressed. If Liam starts next season the way he ended this year lookout! Moved off the line quick in defence and chased everything he could. I’m really proud of the way you finished your season, Liam. Great job. y

Another excellent year for the U7 in 2017. We started the year with 9 of the boys from last season’s U6’s which made things easy to get going, then adding Zach Greig to the team meant that we had a really strong group heading into the season. The change in field size, number of players on the field, and some rule changes proved an early challenge for us, but it only took until halfway through the first game to come good. We knew we were in for a good season. Once again this group was outstanding. The boys continued to improve their skill levels throughout the season with more focus on technique and more complex skills development. Thanks to some experienced coaching assistance from Shannon Cameron, Andrew Needham, Gary Pickworth, and Mark Kennedy, the boys all stepped up a level this year to dominate the competition. They listened to the advice and put it into the following games, often amazing opposition coaches with their skill level and ability. It was great to watch and really positive for the future of the club. We had some special moments this year:

 Rylan Kennedy playing his 50th game for Belrose and leading the team onto Lionel Watts  Running out with the Sydney Shield team on Anzac Day and standing with them for the national anthem and last post  Zac scoring 7 tries against Narraweena  Elijah scoring 13 tries in a round robin  The end of round robins for the season (a personal highlight for me)  Watching the boys faces when the Sydney Shield boys turned up to train with us, and when Christian turned up to watch us play down at Cromer  Cooper Cameron’s never-ending commentary during games Thanks to our Manager Deb Kennedy for running the team again this year on top of her Director’s duties. Deb was again across everything that was going on and kept everyone up to date with regular posts and information. Thanks also to Mark Kennedy who ran the water each week and helped the boys out with bumps, bruises, and tantrums during games. Also, a special mention to Noddy and Shannon who came down to help the boys with tackle technique and ball handling skills, and to Matt Stynes who jointly coached the U6 & U7 group with me. It was great to get the parents more involved this year and I look forward to continuing it next season. I also need to make mention of the Sydney Shield boys and coach Tim Gee who came and trained with us a couple of times and took time out of their weekend to watch us play. The boys loved it and it gives them the right type of role models to look up to. Thank you. Thanks also to every parent/grandparent/relation who ran the touchline, scored, cooked the BBQ, served in the canteen, and got the kids to training and games. Your support was once again greatly appreciated by the whole team. We ended the season with plenty of wins and by the look of the boys after the last game, everyone enjoyed the season as a whole. That is what it’s all about. Thanks, and see you all again next year. Dave Chalk – U7 Coach

Cooper Cameron #1 2017 games: 20 Total Club Games 38 10 Tries A break-out season for Cooper this year. Coop’s defence was rock solid again this season and he would terrorise opposition runners if they wanted to run up the middle, often making ball and all tackles on much bigger kids. He showed his trademark toughness every game and lead our sets with straight, hard running that saw him bust through for 10 hard earned tries this year. Still the funniest kid on the field and a constant source of “advice” for me, Coop was great to have around the group. I look forward to seeing what you can produce next season. Kyan Chalk #2 2017 games: 20 Total Club Games 48 17 Tries Kyan just keeps getting better and better with each game he plays, and this season was a stand-out for “the weapon”. Securing one side of our edge defence Kyan played well above his weight all season long, bringing down runners with copybook technique and toughness. He also decided for some reason this year that he would “charge” the opposition which lead to some great tries through the middle of the pack. Hard to tackle and possessing a great step and balance, there will be plenty more tries to come in your career. Another great season mate, we are all looking forward to watching you develop as a footy player next year.

Zachary Greig #3 2017 games: 17 Total Club Games 17 18 Tries What a start to Zac’s Rugby League career! Scoring from the restart with his first touch of the footy, he never looked back. Fast, tough, and uncompromising, Zac lead our attack with straight, hard running that either broke through or gave us great field position to score off the next play. He dominated other teams with 18 tries in his first 17 games including a 7 try haul in a double-header against Narraweena. Fitting into the squad like he was part of it from day 1, Zac is a valuable member of this team and we look forward to what he can do next year. Great first year mate. Cooper Gunn #4 2017 games: 17 Total Club Games 42 9 Tries Cooper is another character of the team who possesses a heap of talent. Fast and elusive, Cooper started to knuckle down and play some really good footy this year. He had improvements in all parts of his game, most notably his defence which stepped up a level from last year. Blessed with speed, he is never run down once in the clear and has the swan dive down to a 9.2 out of 10, just need to work on the occasional dodgy landing. Cooper will be another one to watch next year as he continues to develop his footy skills. Congratulations on another solid season.

Rylan Kennedy #5 2017 games: 22 Total Club Games 58 34 Tries Milestone 50 Games for Belrose

Ry continued on from his strong season last year, and really stepped it up a notch later in the year to be one of our more dominant players. Always possessing the speed and skill to score plenty of tries (34 this season), Ry matched that with solid defence after we had a couple of tackle technique sessions from our “expert” assistant coaches. Always reliable and a natural organizer, he kept one side of our fringe solid and was always talking in defence which kept everyone in line. Great team player and future leader. Well done mate, fantastic season.

Isaac Kretchmer #6 2017 games: 15 Total Club Games 38 1 Try

Isaac continued to improve again this season and really seemed to enjoy his footy. Isaac is always full of enthusiasm whether he is turning up for training, running out on Saturday, or just getting the hit shields out of the sheds. He plays wholeheartedly every week and isn’t concerned about who he is playing, he just gets in and has a go. Another great try this year and continuing to offload in tackles meant that he contributed in every game, not to mention the improvement in his tackling. Keep up the effort mate, we all look forward to having you with us again next season.

Alex Milne #7 2017 games: 19 Total Club Games 44 6 Tries Big Al continued his great finish to last year by carving up the U7 this season. 6 well deserved tries this year including a hat trick were reward for his hard work both at training and in the games. Alex did a lot of the tough stuff early on in sets and made countless busts which set up tries for his team mates. He also loves running at no.1 which means that he gets the treatment at the start of the set, but just gets up ready for more -. a genuine front rower in the making. Another one who loves his footy and is great to have around the group, we look forward to more from Shampa next season. Great job big fella. Oscar Needham #8 2017 games: 19 Total Club Games 36 49 Tries Oscar carved up the opposition again this year. Fast, tough, and elusive, he proved too much for most opposition teams this year scoring tries at will – a total of 49 in 19 games. He also has great timing in defence and locks out one side of our fringe to make opposition runners earn their tries. Another one with skills beyond his age, the sky is the limit for this kid and next season will suit him even more with ball movement the key in U8s. Oscar is in his element around footy and you can see the enjoyment he gets out of the game. A real pleasure to have around the team and a huge future for this young man. Superb season Oscar, can’t wait to see you carve up the U8s next year. Elijah Wulf #9 2017 games: 20 Total Club Games 37 73 Tries Elijah once again proved that he is a very talented kid with a big future in footy. 73 tries for the season show just how good of a ball runner he is, but his incredible work rate and effort don’t show in statistics. He was involved in at least 2 or 3 tackles in each defensive set and would chase runners right to the try line, often stopping them or holding them up short of the line. He would also give himself the mission of taking down their best ball runner which would inspire his teammates to do the same. Despite being targeted by opposition defences, he adapted to work out an offload in tackles and would back up again to score the try. A leader in this group and a great kid to have around the team, the sky is the limit for you with Belrose. Well done mate, outstanding season.

Ashton Moane #10 2017 games: 10 Total Club Games 22 2 Tries Ash played limited games with us this year but every game was the same – no holds barred. Possibly one of the smallest kids in the comp by stature, he plays flat out every week and puts himself in harm’s way without a second thought. Scored a couple of great charging tries this year and made some ripping good tackles when we needed them, Ash was a really strong contributor to the team this season. One of those players that every team needs, we look forward to having Ash back for another season next year.

UNDER 6 TEAM REPORT

'Well It was an outstanding year for the under 6's in 2017. We struggled for numbers early, starting the year with just enough players to field a side and with one late inclusion we ended up with seven. The side was made up from three guys from the 6's last year and four new faces including two four year olds, all playing their first games of rugby league in 2017. What we lacked in numbers we made up for in heart and toughness, ending the season with only a couple of losses and turning some heads along the way. This really is a great bunch of kids, they were a joy to coach and it was a pleasure to watch the boys develop their skills both on and off the field. Every week the boys took to the field and played the game the way it is meant to be played, with plenty of enthusiasm, respect, toughness and courage, and they should all be very proud of themselves. All the boys showed some great skills in attack this year with every single player scoring a try, Dylan & Balin leading the way scoring 85 tries between them, a fantastic effort. Ben & Jax both scoring over 20 tries each while Tobias, Paddy & Kai all scored their first tries for the eagles, well done boys. It was in defense that we really turned some heads with all the boys working hard for each other and putting their bodies on the line. They showed that all their hard work at training, week in week out payed off. As mentioned we had a relatively small squad this year so Dave Chalk and his under 7's were kind enough to let us train with them each week and as a first time coach it was much appreciated. The effect this had one the under 6's was noticeable instantly, training and interacting with the older boys helped them grow in confidence and ability. So again a huge thanks goes to Dave, Deb and all the under 7 boys for your help and patience. Thank you to all the parents for their help setting up throughout the year I know a football park isn't the most appealing place to be at 7am in winter but all the help is much appreciated. Thanks also to the Sydney Shield players for helping us out at training Particularly Alex Bates who took time out to come and watch the boys play. Last but not least I would also like to thank our manager Janelle for doing an amazing job this year and for making my job much easier. Well done to all the boys and everyone involved, It was a lot of fun. Enjoy the summer and look forward to seeing you all back for the mighty eagles next year.

Tobias continued to improve throughout the season with his hard running being rewarded with some great tries, he also worked hard in defense putting together some great performances towards the end of the year. Tobias is a great kid and a pleasure to have in the team. Great season Tobias, well done.

Patrick Flynn #2 2017 games: 14 2 tries Paddy was another new comer to footy this year and looked to thrive in the team environment, always smiling and enjoying himself. Paddy developed his skills both in attack and defense throughout the season and turned heads with his offloads. Looking forward to seeing you play next year, well done Paddy.

Balin Gee #4 2017 games: 13 37 tries Balin was one of our youngest new recruits to footy this year playing his first season but you wouldn't have known it. Boy can this kid play! Balin showed off some great footwork and speed in attack which resulted in lots of great tries but it was in defense that Balin turned many heads with his crushing tackles and text book tackling techniques. A star of the future. Well done on a great first year Balin.

Jaxon Stynes #5 2017 games: 14 Total Club Games 24 20 tries Jax was our big improver this year coming along in leaps and bounds throughout the season in both attack and defense. Jax caused many headaches for our opponents with his side step and palm which resulted in some great tries. Jax worked hard on his tackling putting together some great defensive displays in the back half of the season. Great to see you enjoying your footy, well done Jax.

Dylan Boles #6 2017 games: 14 Total Club Games 29 48 tries Dylan picked up this season where he left off last year, he had an outstanding season and was our top try scorer. Dylan is a powerful ball runner and developed some great footwork throughout the season, as well as his amazing attacking skills he always worked hard in defense saving many opposition tries with his great cover defense. Dylan also represented Belrose well at in the club relay. Well done Dylan, another great year.

Ben Thomashütz #7 2017 games: 13 Total Club Games 21 24 tries Ben played his second season for the eagles this year and is a great character to have in the team. Ben is big, strong, fast and tough as they come. He was one of our best defenders this year, worrying many teams with his bruising tackles. He also became a devastating runner of the ball with many great charges, picking him up a swag of tries. Great work this year Ben, look forward to having you play again next year.

Kai Jones #8 2017 games: 12 2 tries Kai was another one of our youngest players this season, playing his first year of footy with the eagles. After a hesitant start to the year the penny seemed to drop with Kai and he continued to develop his skills both in attack and defense as the season went on. On numerous occasions Kai showed what he lacks in size he makes up for in toughness, bouncing back after weathering some horrid defense. Great first season Kai, look forward to having you play next season.
