MANLY-WARRINGAH FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2020 MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2020

2 FOREWORD TO THE REPORT

We present the 2020 Annual Report of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club (MWRLFC). For obvious reasons, the 2020 Report is not as comprehensive as previous years. The disruption caused by COVID-19 meant our Canterbury Cup ( Workers) and teams’ seasons were cancelled after the first round, and the Harold Matthews and SG Ball teams were only able to complete six of the scheduled nine rounds. Nonetheless we still felt it was important to produce the Report as has been done every year since 1946, including the stats for all grades. We believe we owe it to every player who pulls on the Manly- Warringah Sea Eagles jersey to have their name and other details recorded in this document, whether they played one game or 100 games. By producing this report, we do not purport to represent ourselves as the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Limited (MWSE Ltd) which is a separate legal entity administering and funding the Team. The MWRLFC is a minority owner of the MWSE Ltd. That means that MWRLFC members also have an ownership stake in the MWSE Ltd, the Sea Eagles. The MWRLFC holds the Preference Share in the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Ltd which gives our members, through their right to vote, determination over the Team’s name, colours and its home ground, as well as two voting positions on the MWSE Ltd Board which has seven members. Like last year, in 2020 we focussed our efforts on our members by producing the one-off individually numbered MWRLFC membership scarf to match last year’s cap. We were very happy with the result. As you can imagine, for a small group of volunteer directors, it is quite a lot of work and 2020 was a difficult and unusual year to say the least. We are also pleased that our membership numbers remain strong, despite the many personal challenges faced by our members. It is more important that ever that we maintain our strength as an organisation. We need our membership numbers to be strong so our place within the Sea Eagles structure and the voice of our members (Sea Eagles fans) cannot be ignored should there ever be future changes to the ownership or governance of the Sea Eagles which remains a distinct possibility. As we always do, we encourage MWRLFC members wherever possible and affordable, to also be members of the Sea Eagles. This report has largely been compiled from publicly available data and our own records with all photography credits to the Sea Eagles. The production of the Report is done on a voluntary basis and the cost of printing the Report is wholly funded by the MWRLFC through the membership income. The Board

4 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

I am pleased to once more present the Annual Report of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club for 2020.

It’s hard to know where to start on what has been an extremely difficult year both within our club and our game.

The bright spot has been the way rugby league found a way to get back up and running - something that seemed impossible when the full impact of COVID was fully realised.

NRL Chairman Peter Vlandy’s, CEO Andrew Abdo and the Project Apollo team achieved nothing short of a miracle when the teams once again took the field in May after a 10-week stoppage. Even when we resumed – there was no certainty as to how long the season would continue. But continue it did, right to the Grand Final, with a series to cap it all off.

For our Club it was a tough year. As Coach describes in his report, some clubs fared better than others and each day there were a huge number of protocols every player and official in “the bubble” had to follow in order to keep the game going safely.

On the field our results were mixed. The 9-8 win against the Roosters in round two before the shut-down was memorable, and had us all believing we would live up to the pre-season predictions of a top four spot. We came back after the shutdown and played the Bulldogs on the Central Coast, beating them convincingly. Next we lost against the Eels 19-16, except we didn’t actually lose because scored a great try on the bell that was denied to us for a forward pass call that was later confirmed to have been completely fine. Then we beat the Broncos and the Raiders. The Raiders win was as tough as it was enjoyable, but it came at a huge cost with the injuries to Tommy Turbo and . The season got more difficult from that point onwards although we managed some more good wins against the Cowboys, the Eels (again) and the Bulldogs.

The damage to the spine of our team and other injuries to players like Joel Thompson, , Reuben Garrick, and Addin Fonua Blake just to name a few (!) made it harder and harder every week to compete with any consistency.

On the bright side, we had some promising new players debut, including (Rookie of the Year) , Albert Hopoate and . Josh Schuster showed in just one game (before he got injured) what all the hype has been about. Josh’s return is really something to look forward to in 2021.

Daly and Jake both had another great year. Each of them played every game, led from the front and were well deserving of their State of Origin selections. They both represented their respective states with distinction. Congratulations to Captain Daly for the series win.

It’s also worth acknowledging all the players who weren’t able to play throughout the season, particularly the Canterbury Cup and Jersey Flegg teams who only got to complete one round. This would have been really tough on them.

Off the field the Club, like all other businesses, did it tough. We owe a great deal of thanks to CEO Stephen Humphreys and his entire team as well as Des and his team for keeping the whole show going. There were some late and worrying nights for Stephen and his financial manager Rod Valdes but they got us through.

In other positive developments, the Centre of Excellence is under construction and will be a fantastic addition to our home at Brookvale. There’s also the possibility of the State government funding a full redevelopment – finally giving us the boutique modern facility our fans deserve.

Congratulations to Kim Hunter from the Junior League. As you will see from his report, along with their fantastic group of volunteers from each club, they kept their competitions going and had some success to go with it. We see the results of this work along with the elite junior pathways program through the continued success of Manly juniors making it to the top in the NRL year after year. If only we could keep them all!

As we all know the year ended in the worst and saddest possible way with the tragic passing of up and coming player Keith Titmuss. Keith was a talented and popular player. Who can forget his famous swan dive to score the winning try on the bell in the 2017 under 20s Grand Final. Keith’s passing is a huge loss to the Sea Eagles family and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and many friends.

Our Board continues to be strong and united, and I thank them all – Alan Thompson, David O’Donnell, Julie Sibraa, Scotty Wilcox, Nick Curulli and our newest board member Alf Czharn - for their efforts throughout the year and their ongoing commitment to keeping our club strong.

Finally, thank you to our members for staying loyal and maintaining membership. 2021 marks our 75th year as a Club and we are hoping it will be our best yet.

I wish you a safe and happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you at next year.

GO MANLY!

Cliff Lyons CHAIRMAN

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2020

6 SEA EAGLES CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S MESSAGE My first year in the Chief Executive role has been a challenging one to say the least. Across the entire community, COVID-19 has impacted upon every part of what we consider our daily lives. For the Sea Eagles it has been no different. We have faced issues and problems none of us could ever have anticipated. Fortunately though, the Club is made up of some great people and I’m very proud to say that we rose to the occasion and went above and beyond to keep us viable through a most difficult period.

As it was for all Clubs, the stoppage of the 2020 Season had an enormous impact on our finances and workforce. Many hard decisions had to be made and we did our very best to support our staff as much as possible. JobKeeper provided a financial lifeline and the support from the was welcome, as was the support of our fantastic corporate partners and members, the majority of whom pledged their 2020 membership fees to the Club, which gave us a huge lift.

The leadership of the Commission Chairman, Peter V’landys, and new CEO, Andrew Abdo, along with the unity and focus of the Clubs proved to be a very powerful force. The NRL led the way in getting professional sport back up and running when everyone said it was impossible. Others would soon follow in our footsteps.

I’m delighted to say that construction of the new Grandstand and Centre of Excellence at Lottoland is now underway. Sitting at the northern end of the ground it will provide much needed state of the art facilities for our Club and will also create additional undercover seating for our supporters. The Centre of Excellence will provide many opportunities for the Club that we will no doubt be talking about over the coming months.

We have also been working with the NRL and the NSW Government on a further and complete redevelopment of our spiritual home, Lottoland. We have an excellent masterplan for the development of the site and funding has now been allocated for feasibility studies so we are confident of good news in the near future.

Despite the disappointments of 2020, both on and off the field, there’s every reason to be optimistic about the years to come. Head Coach Des Hasler has provided strong and inspirational leadership over the football side of the business. Both he and football manager John Bonasera have been pillars of strength throughout the year, but none more so than with the recent, tragic loss of our young player Keith Titmuss.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team at Sea Eagles HQ for everything they have done this year and the significant personal sacrifices they have all made. I also thank the Sea Eagles Board for their outstanding backing and advice throughout the year.

Most importantly, I thank all Sea Eagles members and MWRLFC members, for their ongoing support. Please keep the faith and have a healthy, happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Here’s to better times in 2021.

Stephen Humphreys CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

8 HEAD COACH’S REPORT

As we look back on 2020 we will find an array of highs and lows that defined the NRL season for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. Some injuries to key players that proved to be critical for the club and the emergence of youth in their place who continued to grow as the season progressed.

It’s hard to explain the season from within “the bubble” and the impact of the day-to-day requirements on the group. I feel that for those clubs that experienced on-field success throughout the season, the conditions may have actually helped their cause, and for others who did not meet expectations and hopes, it was made much more difficult.

A day in the life of a professional rugby league player or staff member in the NRL in 2020 looked a lot like this. By no means is this a complaint, as we know others have had an extremely difficult time throughout this period also, it’s just an insight –

• On waking up, check temperature at home and ensure it sits within “normal” guidelines • Complete wellness app (7 days-a-week), nominating any symptoms being experienced, current temperature and whereabouts for the previous 24 hours, for example Woolworths 5pm grocery shopping, Harris Farm 5:30pm, BP service station 6:30am fuel etc. • Arrive at training and on entrance to the “clean zone” have temperature re-taken by staff and recorded and app completion checked and verified correct. • Training as normal throughout the day with regular hand washing/showering throughout. Locked fencing was placed around all “clean zone” areas including field, gym, pool, staff offices, player recreation areas, showers, kitchen, medical rooms and, for several months until we were able to purchase the appropriate foot trays and chemicals for shoe cleansing, all footwear was removed on entry or exit to every area. This meant shoe changes anywhere up to 20 times a day as you walked in and out of different buildings at our training facility. I can tell you it was a great relief for everyone when those trays arrived. • Written applications made to the NRL for anything outside of the norm – to attend family events, birthday parties for children, family weddings for brothers or sisters, funerals, specialist appointments, to name a few (the majority of which were refused). • No exercise or sporting activities off site. For example, no golf, running, swimming, surfing, gym, and while attending children’s sport remain in the car throughout. And like others for a long period, no cafes, restaurants, pubs or any form of indoor or outdoor public gatherings. • Return home after a long day and do it all again tomorrow.

Again, it’s important to note this is not a whinge, just a look and a reflection on the season gone-by. Back to the footy….

On field we had some great performances early in the season beating the reigning premiers the Roosters in Round 2 and backing it up in the weeks following against some quality opposition including the Eels where we were beaten narrowly. A very courageous performance against 2019 grand finalists the Raiders, with two players left on the bench for 60 minutes resulting in a very hard fought win.

That game was a turning point with the loss of two key players to injury that saw them gone for the remainder of the season. While the rest of the season overall fell short of our expectations despite some good wins against quality opposition, it also unearthed some names for the future with notable performances from players like Tevita Funa, , , Morgan Harper, Haumole Olakauátu, Josh Schuster and Albert Hopoate to name a few.

It is important to note that with games only being played at NRL level once we returned to play following the Covid break, we had numerous players within our squad training full-time with no weekend games to look forward to. The way these men conducted themselves throughout the season, consistently applying themselves and turning up to give their best at training every day is a credit to them as individuals and the culture we are continuing to build here at the club.

The lessons from the 2020 season have been vast. We have learnt a lot about ourselves, both individually and as a group. Our relationships have grown exponentially and the bonds we have developed will without doubt strengthen our 2021 campaign as we commence our pre-season.

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2020 GOLDEN EAGLES REPORT 2020

What a year! Most people would say 2020 was a bad year but in hindsight many good things happened.

The way the players bonded and stuck together through adversity was a shining light highlighted during a few wins. Beating the Roosters, who were the reigning Premiers and World Club Champions, 9-8 in Round 2 before injuries toppled any chances of making the finals, certainly gave the fans some hope for the season to follow. It also gave them a glimpse of what the team was capable of when they had all their troops on the field. Injuries to the team, and to players in crucial positions followed however and it got to the stage where it seemed like every game the team would lose another player to injury.

The players dug in through the adversity and wins against in Round 5 after being 0-18 down, and a win against all the odds over the Raiders the following round, after being decimated by injuries before and during the game, showed that this 2020 team were indeed a close bunch and would never give up. In fact, commentators Phil Gould and Peter Sterling both labelled the Manly victory over as the best ‘Against the Odds’ victory either of them had ever seen!

Even though the club was limited by the lack of match fitness for our younger stars after the lower grade competitions were cancelled, we still saw some of the future stars of our club debut during a tough season. Tevita Funa #619 showed what a star he will be in the maroon and white once he started gaining confidence and the one all Manly fans had been waiting for, Josh Schuster #622, burst into the NRL in his first game and looked like he had been playing for ten years! Add these youngsters and a few more that are ready to debut alongside the return of favourite son #531 Keiran ‘Foz’ Foran, and 2021 is definitely a year to look forward to for Manly.

The Golden Eagles would like to take this opportunity to pass on our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Keith Titmuss who sadly passed away after a training session in late November. Keith was a very popular player amongst his teammates and after being added to the Top 30 Squad for 2021 was not only expected to make his first- grade debut but to cement a place in the top grade alongside the likes of Funa and Schuster. The club has posthumously awarded Keith with the next player number on the registry - #623.

Making things even better in an extremely tough environment is the continued support and loyalty of the Manly sponsors. This report could easily be filled with the remarkable support showed by the sponsors who are all part of the Manly Family through good and bad times.

Special mention to Kay Van Norton Poche for her amazing and continued support of the Golden Eagles, club legends and their families, as well as special projects undertaken by the club. Kay has had a huge input helping the club with their Indigenous projects as well as sponsoring and supporting the fantastic jerseys the club has produced each season for the Indigenous Round, with most of those jerseys quickly becoming sought by collectors.

Last but not least on the sponsor front, we couldn’t forget a favourite Manly jersey sponsor from the 80’s in Wormald, who returned to the club to directly sponsor the Golden Eagles in 2019. Although there were no official Golden Eagles days during the season, Wormald continued their support behind the scenes and have some exciting things planned for the Golden Eagles and fans for the upcoming 2021 season.

Looking ahead, the Golden Eagles will be proud to play a big part in the club’s 75th Year Anniversary and its celebrations. Even more of the ‘old crew’ will be on hand to help Des Hasler #304 steer the club to its next premiership. #484, alongside former Blacktown coach Steve Hales, have been appointed Co-Assistant Coaches for 2021, joining Chad Randall #466, Brett Stewart #477 and of course Noel Cleal #292 as Des’ staff. #513 has been appointed coach of the Sea Eagles for 2021 and will no doubt instil the Manly culture into the club during his coaching tenure as well as improving their fitness and position on the competition ladder. We wish Matty all the best in his new position.

There couldn’t be a better time to sign up for a Football Club membership as well as a Sea Eagles 75’ membership. Keep an eye out for announcements in 2021 for some of the special 75th Year Anniversary functions and celebrations, and lock in your chance to rub shoulders with some Golden Eagles during a match at Lottoland!

See you there!

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2020

16 JUNIOR LEAGUE REPORT 2020

On behalf of the Board of the Manly Warringah District Junior League, I am pleased to present this report for the 2020 season.

What an unprecedented season we experienced in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Delayed season, shortened season and strict Covid-19 restrictions.

All our junior league clubs did an exceptional job in getting so many players and teams registered under such difficult circumstances and for their compliance to NSWRL Covid-19 policy.

This year we had 1,983 players registered down from 2,012 in 2019 and 2,066 in 2018. There was an increase in female registrations from 128 in 2019 to 133 (90 in 2018 & 37 in 2017). A reduction of only 29 players from last season is I believe a great result given the tremendous difficulties that Covid-19 placed and is a reflection of the great work done by the Club Executives and their volunteers at each of our 12 Clubs.

There were 149 teams compared to 148 in 2019 (152 in 2018) in our age groups from Under 6 to A Grade. Many of our teams played in combined competitions conducted by the NSWRL.

We only had three local A Grade teams and they played in the Open Age Conference Competitions. With Manly team Cromer being Premiers in the North Eastern Open Age Gold Division defeating Redfern All Blacks 36 to 32 at Brookvale Oval.

Other highlights being the Cromer Girls team winning the Combined Girls Under 18 Competition defeating St Christopher’s 30 to 14 in their Grand Final and Narrabeen were defeated by Coogee / Randwick 22 to 16 in the Grand Final of the Combined Under 20 Silver Competition.

It is worth noting that there were some 14 Manly junior players that played NRL during the 2020 season:- Jake Trbojevic, Tom Trbojevic, Brad Parker & Albert Hopoate (Manly), (Brisbane), & Michael Oldfield (Canberra), Will Hopoate (Canterbury), Jack Johns (South Sydney), Cooper Johns (), (Newcastle), Clint Gutherson (), Sam Verrills & Freddy Lussick (). Note that Ben Trbojevic was a member of the Manly NRL squad but is yet to play his first game in the NRL. Jake Trbojevic and Clint Gutherson both represented NSW in the three State of Origin games in 2020.

It is also important to highlight the financial assistance provided by the Manly Warringah Leagues Club which has supported the Manly-Warringah Junior Rugby League for many years. In fact the Leagues Club provided substantial additional funding for the 2020 season to assist with the financial pressure brought on by Covid-19. I would like to thank the Leagues Club Board for their contribution and assistance including use of Club facilities when required. The continued financial support of the Manly Leagues Club is paramount to our District Junior Rugby League.

Two clubs were awarded NSWRL Blue Shield Status in 2020, those clubs being, Mona Vale and Belrose.

Belrose Eagles were awarded Joint Winners of the NSWRL Respect Club of the Year.

Bob Butcher was awarded a Distinguished Long Service Award by NSW Sport.

Deborah Kennedy from the Club was awarded NSWRL Manly District Volunteer of the Year.

I would also like to thank the Manly Warringah Rugby League Football Club who provide general corporate guidance and assistance when appropriate.

In my fourth year as President, I would like to thank everyone who contributed in some way to the running of the game in our District and I look forward to seeing everyone back again in 2021.

* Denotes a member who has passed away during the year.

We mourn each and every Football Club member who passes away. We often don’t hear of the passing of one of our members until sometime later – for example when we send an email or mail correspondence. If we have omitted to note any member who has passed away it is not intentional. We pass on our condolences to the family and friends of any football club member who has passed away in 2020.

MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2020 VALE

WARREN SIMMONS (1930 – 2020) – PLAYER # 62

Warren Simmons was a local junior and member of the Sea Eagles’ first grand final team in 1951. Warren played in the centres, and ran out for 37 first grade games for the Sea Eagles between 1950-1954. Warren’s career was inextricably linked to that of Manly great Ken Arthurson. They both played in the Manly-Warringah District Junior Rugby League. They played against each other – Warren Simmons for Christian Brothers and Ken for Freshwater Surf Club. The family are well known to various stalwarts of the club, always stopping to talk to anyone who had anything to do with the Sea Eagles, be they staff or players. Those surrounding Jim in his regular seat in the Jane Try stand will miss him at future games, but he will be remembered.

He is a life member of the NSW Referees Association.
