MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2020 MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2020 2 FOREWORD TO THE REPORT We present the 2020 Annual Report of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club (MWRLFC). For obvious reasons, the 2020 Report is not as comprehensive as previous years. The disruption caused by COVID-19 meant our Canterbury Cup (Blacktown Workers) and Jersey Flegg teams’ seasons were cancelled after the first round, and the Harold Matthews and SG Ball teams were only able to complete six of the scheduled nine rounds. Nonetheless we still felt it was important to produce the Report as has been done every year since 1946, including the stats for all grades. We believe we owe it to every player who pulls on the Manly- Warringah Sea Eagles jersey to have their name and other details recorded in this document, whether they played one game or 100 games. By producing this report, we do not purport to represent ourselves as the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Limited (MWSE Ltd) which is a separate legal entity administering and funding the Team. The MWRLFC is a minority owner of the MWSE Ltd. That means that MWRLFC members also have an ownership stake in the MWSE Ltd, the Sea Eagles. The MWRLFC holds the Preference Share in the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Ltd which gives our members, through their right to vote, determination over the Team’s name, colours and its home ground, as well as two voting positions on the MWSE Ltd Board which has seven members. Like last year, in 2020 we focussed our efforts on our members by producing the one-off individually numbered MWRLFC membership scarf to match last year’s cap. We were very happy with the result. As you can imagine, for a small group of volunteer directors, it is quite a lot of work and 2020 was a difficult and unusual year to say the least. We are also pleased that our membership numbers remain strong, despite the many personal challenges faced by our members. It is more important that ever that we maintain our strength as an organisation. We need our membership numbers to be strong so our place within the Sea Eagles structure and the voice of our members (Sea Eagles fans) cannot be ignored should there ever be future changes to the ownership or governance of the Sea Eagles which remains a distinct possibility. As we always do, we encourage MWRLFC members wherever possible and affordable, to also be members of the Sea Eagles. This report has largely been compiled from publicly available data and our own records with all photography credits to the Sea Eagles. The production of the Report is done on a voluntary basis and the cost of printing the Report is wholly funded by the MWRLFC through the membership income. It’s hard to know where to start on what has been an extremely difficult year both within our club and our game. The bright spot has been the way rugby league found a way to get back up and running - something that seemed impossible when the full impact of COVID was fully realised. NRL Chairman Peter Vlandy’s, CEO Andrew Abdo and the Project Apollo team achieved nothing short of a miracle when the teams once again took the field in May after a 10-week stoppage. Even when we resumed – there was no certainty as to how long the season would continue. But continue it did, right to the Grand Final, with a State of Origin series to cap it all off. For our Club it was a tough year. As Coach Des Hasler describes in his report, some clubs fared better than others and each day there were a huge number of protocols every player and official in “the bubble” had to follow in order to keep the game going safely. On the field our results were mixed. The 9-8 win against the Roosters in round two before the shut-down was memorable, and had us all believing we would live up to the pre-season predictions of a top four spot. We came back after the shutdown and played the Bulldogs on the Central Coast, beating them convincingly. Next we lost against the Eels 19-16, except we didn’t actually lose because Reuben Garrick scored a great try on the bell that was denied to us for a forward pass call that was later confirmed to have been completely fine. Then we beat the Broncos and the Raiders. The Raiders win was as tough as it was enjoyable, but it came at a huge cost with the injuries to Tommy Turbo and Dylan Walker. The season got more difficult from that point onwards although we managed some more good wins against the Cowboys, the Eels (again) and the Bulldogs. The damage to the spine of our team and other injuries to players like Joel Thompson, Moses Suli, Reuben Garrick, Curtis Sironen and Addin Fonua Blake just to name a few (!) made it harder and harder every week to compete with any consistency. On the bright side, we had some promising new players debut, including Tevita Funa (Rookie of the Year) Morgan Harper, Albert Hopoate and Josh Schuster. Josh Schuster showed in just one game (before he got injured) what all the hype has been about. Josh’s return is really something to look forward to in 2021. Daly and Jake both had another great year. Each of them played every game, led from the front and were well deserving of their State of Origin selections. They both represented their respective states with distinction. Congratulations to Captain Daly for the series win. It’s also worth acknowledging all the players who weren’t able to play throughout the season, particularly the Canterbury Cup and Jersey Flegg teams who only got to complete one round. This would have been really tough on them. Off the field the Club, like all other businesses, did it tough. We owe a great deal of thanks to CEO Stephen Humphreys and his entire team as well as Des and his team for keeping the whole show going. There were some late and worrying nights for Stephen and his financial manager Rod Valdes but they got us through. In other positive developments, the Centre of Excellence is under construction and will be a fantastic addition to our home at Brookvale. There’s also the possibility of the State government funding a full redevelopment – finally giving us the boutique modern facility our fans deserve. Congratulations to Kim Hunter from the Junior League. As you will see from his report, along with their fantastic group of volunteers from each club, they kept their competitions going and had some success to go with it. We see the results of this work along with the elite junior pathways program through the continued success of Manly juniors making it to the top in the NRL year after year. If only we could keep them all! As we all know the year ended in the worst and saddest possible way with the tragic passing of up and coming player Keith Titmuss. Keith was a talented and popular player. Who can forget his famous swan dive to score the winning try on the bell in the 2017 under 20s Grand Final. Keith’s passing is a huge loss to the Sea Eagles family and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and many friends. Our Board continues to be strong and united, and I thank them all – Alan Thompson, David O’Donnell, Julie Sibraa, Scotty Wilcox, Nick Curulli and our newest board member Alf Czharn - for their efforts throughout the year and their ongoing commitment to keeping our club strong. Finally, thank you to our members for staying loyal and maintaining membership. 2021 marks our 75th year as a Club and we are hoping it will be our best yet. I wish you a safe and happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you at Brookvale Oval next year. GO MANLY!
