Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2013

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well what a difference a year makes after a somewhat disappointing 2012 this year has been one of positives on and off the field.

The Club’s decision to explore options outside of the local A Grade competition and enter the NSWRL run Shield competition has been an outstanding success. At the time of going to press the team had secured the Minor Premiership and are now only a game away from a possi- ble Grand Final appearance. On field success aside the boys have enjoyed the wider variety of teams this competition provides although not sure that they are totally happy about playing for an extra month !!

Locally, we have also enjoyed great success with 4 teams making it through to the Grand Finals being Under 8s, 12s, 15s and A-Grade. Ultimately 3 teams have enjoyed premiership glory. The Under 8’s coached by Paul Clyne, Under 15s by first year coach Luke Grant and A Grade under the reins of captain coach Scott Handley all enjoyed and celebrated wins. Congratulations to these teams and everyone who contributed to their success. Unfortunately Tim Fitzgerald’s under 12 side were defeated by a very strong Harbord outfit, these boys can hold their heads high for a great season.

I believe that a season should not only be measured by the number of Grand Final victories and we have enjoyed a number of success stories off the field this year thanks to hard work by many people.

 Loyal and generous sponsors. Sean Wilson and Brad Martin have worked hard to be able to hopefully provide greater exposure and recognition for all our sponsors.  Record numbers of players in the annual touch football competition  Player registrations slightly higher than last season  Repairs completed and the scoreboard is now working  AV system set up in the Clubhouse  Great club supporter base  on and off the field.

In general we have had a lot of fun this year. The Dinner Dance was the highlight at a new ven- ue at the Manly Pacific where a great night was had by all. We are very fortunate to have a core group of volunteers; actually they are workers, who have again got us through the year. Every- thing from set up, canteen, raffles, registration, coaches, managers and trainers I can’t name you all but a very big thank you on behalf of the Club we simply would not survive without you.

Personally I would like to thank everyone for their support this year especially my fellow Board members but particularly my family who are so understanding and supportive on the demands of my time.

SCOTT COLLINS

7 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2013

SECRETARY’S REPORT

2013 is the year that Belrose has turned the corner and are again on the way up. The days when we win plenty of premierships are about to return. After a very difficult season in 2012 things seemed to go pretty well in 2013 This year with three premierships and the Sydney Shield result to come the Club has had its best year in premierships since 2003.. What is even more important nearly all our teams are showing great improvement with better things to come. The final results for all our teams in 2013 were: Sydney Shield Minor Premiership A Grade Premiers U19 Grade Finalist U17Grade Semi Finalist U15 Grade Premiers U14 Grade 5th U13 Grade Grand Finalist U12/1/M Grand Finalist U12/2W Grade Finalist U11/1M Grade Semi Finalist U11/2 Grade 3rd div Finalist U10/1 M Grade Finalist U10/2 W Grade 3rd Div. Semi Finalist U9/2 W Grade Preliminary Finalist U8/2W Premiers U7 m Uncompetitive U7 W Uncompetitive U 6 Uncompetitive

This Annual Report has all team reports from all grades and is an indication of the effort Coaches & Managers put in to ensure our players are all recognized for their efforts If we continue to get enthusiastic Coaches & Managers we will see our teams grow. I think there is no better fun on an early Saturday morning watching all the new parents and grandparents see the new under six players take the field for the first time in Red & Gold. The excitement is often more eclectic than an NRL game. This year was no exception and the num- bers grew in under 7 & U8’s with the under eights playing their first season of competitive foot- ball to take out a premiership. Coach Paul Clyne had previously won a number of premier- (Continued on page 9)

ships playing in the centers for 10 years alongside one of Belrose most successful players Da- vid Ronson ( David’s Sea Eagles Premiership winning jumper is on display in the Clubhouse) I am sure Paul’s first success as a Coach is right up there with his success as a player. The numbers grew in under 9 and this age group improved remarkably. Under 10 were again good in numbers while the under11 showed steady improvement. The under 12/1 made the grand final and will surely be looking forward to moving from Mod football to inter- national under 13. This years under 13 had great numbers and look like a team that will continue to get bet- ter while U14’s had a complete restructure and have the enthusiasm to take them through. Of course the last of the Saturday Teams Under 15’s produced the results of the year by beating Manly Cove in Mayor Semi Final and the Grand final. Brad Martin has built this team up over a number of years and continues have great support. This Luke Grant a 200 game Belrose player took over the Coaching tasks and became a Premiership winning Coach for the first time. The Sunday teams started with Harry Georgas U17. Harry was a miracle man he rarely had a full team but with the help of Dave Gordon Manager & Mark Soden Trainer got the team on the field each week . Neil Pollard under 19’s was in a similar position to Harry but managed to get a few extra players and made the final The back to future approach in appointing Captain Coach of Sydney Shield and A Grade proved to be an enormous success with A grade taking out the A2 Premiership and the Sydney Shield Minor premiers at the time of going to press These days all sports not just Rugby League have continue demand for Governance. Gov- ernments who give money with strings attached to head bodies. Head Bodies make more rules & regulation and the Junior sports volunteers have increasing demands at every level. A special thank you to all those are now an Accredited Coach League Safe Trainer, First Aid- er , Manager & Ground Manager. Yes it is sad that volunteers who just what to help where they can have to go through so many procedures but we are lucky we had enough come forward in most areas. Thank you all again. As well as all the team officials the Club Directors relied on the support of many others in the Club Sue Alder continues managing the gear and first aid Mark Abrahams gets more enthusiastic at plans for the grounds John Borger with the help of Clarrisa Wilson & Dave Paterson have seen our registrations in the best order of any Club. While Virginia Wills took over the Website and the traffic greatly increased. And for all you Facebook fans Clarissa Wilson seems to be getting the stories out The Club is also thankful for the many sponsors and particularly to Brad Martin Sean Wilson who got all the arrangements in hand. I would also like to thank all those who helped in the Canteen this season and especially Kerry Nugent Andrea Paterson & Clarissa Wilson and lets not forget Brad Martins Sunday burg- ers.. Vicki Collins continues with her Social Committee and the Annual Dinner Dance at the Manly Pa- cific was again a highlight. Vicki also kept the Touch Football ticking along while the Golf Clubs & Cricket Clubs have contin- ue to tribute to the Club.

A Club like ours is only as successful as the people in it and without the Players Coaches Train- ers Managers Mums & Dads supporting the Club you can't have a Club Thanks you all for your contributions in 2013 Now is time to start to think about 2014 and have a bit of fun at Touch Football

TOUCH FOOTBALL REPORT

The 2013 season of Belrose Touch will be starting not long after this report goes to print. And if our previous history of the success of this local competition is anything to go by, it will be another successful fun year for some 1,500 kids and 200 adults.

In 2012 we registered over 1200 junior players and the comp ran for 9 weeks. I am expecting the number of registrations to be higher this year with age groups from u/6 to u/17. Every year we battle Warringah Council for as many weeks as possible so again this year we will have a 9 week competition due to the need to re-turf the grounds again at the end of the year.

The best part of our summer of touch, is the fun that the kids have. It is a great community event that brings local kids and parents together for an afternoon of social sport. As an integral part of our fundraising calendar it enables Belrose Rugby League to keep rego fees at a minimum, sub- sidise dinner dance tickets, and purchase much needed equipment for the players. Getting a competition like this off the ground is an enormous job. Unfortunately we only have a small group of people that consistently help year after year. In particular, Trent Keys, Mark & Sue Abrahams, Sean and Clarissa Wilson, Kerrie Nugent, Brad Martin, Barry Johnson, Dave Paterson and of course all of the team managers and the boys who referee each season. Thank you for your continued help as the competition simply would not run as well as it does without you. We des- perately need more people to get involved so if you are able to help in any capacity I can be contacted at [email protected]

We look forward to seeing everyone in October .

Vicki Collins, Touch Football Co-ordinator

11 Thank You

The Canteen Committee would like to thank everyone for assisting in the Canteen & with BBQ duties during a busy 2013 Season.

Your support is greatly appreciated; we couldn’t do it without you.

SYDNEY SHIELD COACH’S COMMENT

Firstly I’d like to thank all the volunteers who make this such a great rugby League Club and have had their part in the success of the Senior Grades this year.

Firstly Sue Alder Gozo Norm Nugent and Craig the physio all give up their week nights and weekends to help out the boys. They don’t get the praise they deserve. I personally thank you for all your efforts not just this year but over the years. Your dedication and effort is truly amazing.

Then there is Chris Daly Mark Abrahams Brad Martin Scott Collins Michael Bate Keiran Dempsey Paul Hegarty Craig Badger Sean Wilson Luke Williamson and the doctors Jonathan Gordon and Keiran McCaffrey. From setting up the fields to driving the bus and everything in between these people give up hours on end often unrecognised for their efforts. For that we are truly grateful.

Lastly Eric Galloway and Luke Campbell and Scotty Hanley have made my experience very easy as Coach. These 3 blokes I believe have relished the opportunity to be a part of the Sydney Shield squad and have done an unbelievable job. They have created a fun environment and often stepped up to fill my void and excelled in every area. I couldn’t have done my part without them. Especially Eric his time has been invaluable this year. Heading to countless NSWRL meetings, sorting out our new training gear Polo’s away strips. Not bad for and old Crow!

It took several months to appoint me as Captain Coach. I know people had their doubts about me some players and administrators which is fare as I can be a rat bag at times. I knew given the opportunity it was something I have always wanted to do and do well.

We brought in tough DISCIPLINE and RESPECT and made rugby League fun. You can tell by our preseason bonding trip to paint ball and the Axes farm that this year was going to be a good one. With 45 attending the day filled with fun and songs and a few quiet beers we became one team. The Team trained together played together socialised together and I said from day 1 the closer we became as mates the better we will go as a team. It showed with the A Grade competition and the Sydney Shield Minor Premiership on the same day.

I could not have done my job properly without the respect of each and every player. We had over 50 to start and I took it personally every time we lost another player. The best thing about Belrose is most people who come to the Club STAY. We had strict training rules and made training fun and everyone respected each other which is probably my happiest part of being a Coach.

I take a lot of pride in wearing a football jumper no matter what it was a great idea from Lee Camer- on to have someone special/Belrose Ledged to hand out the jumpers before every game each week. This was great and I know the boys responded well and appreciated this and it was special pulling on this jumper from a Club Legend.

I am writing this as we enter the final series. Hopefully we can continue to charge as we have all season and success is just around the corner. There is a lot of hard work to come but I have be- lief in each and every player who I call up and I know they will do the job for me.

We have also had a strong connection with the Sea Eagles and Luke Williamson. Each player we

received contributed in their own way and our success was theirs. Top Blokes and Top Players they were fantastic part of the team and hopefully we can con- tinue to build this relationship.

Lastly thanks to all the sponsors for your donations and time on board. Everyone appreciates your contributions.

2013 was a new year for Belrose Senior Grades after a difficult year for the Club in 2012. Mark Ballesty got this going at the end of last year and the Board worked with Mark to seek a new coach. It became clear in the selection process that the Club needed to make a decision on where we would play our two senior grades in 2013.. The Club had 4 very good candidate’s to Coach but it took time to confirm a viable competition for the playing squad.

In the end James Mortimer was appointed Captain Coach and as the Boards appointed member of the playing squad Eric Galloway become the Manager.

The season started in February with Mortimer demanding all players pay $100 for new Training gear and over 40 players got their gear the first night. With Training under way the Squad played over 30 players in the trials and recorded their first round win at Li- onel Watts against Burwood North Ryde. MCGLINCHEY Dean Played 8 Games 7 Tries 6 Goals

Dean is a very stylist player that came from Manly. Has a great attacking game and plenty of speed to set up outside play. People that big should not allowed to be backs.

MANAGER’S REPORT

As well as the players there were many others who kept the playing squad prepared for the games. Sue Alder puts in a unbelievable effort year after year and with higher requirements in the NSW RL competition it was not a problem as she ensured there was always three trainers in Sydney Shield & A Grade plus a home doctor in Sydney Shield. Those who helped Syd- ney Shield as on field trainers included Norm Nugent Chris Daly Brad Martin Mark Abrahams Scott Collins & Sean Wilson

And then there was Mark Abrahams who drove a bus to most of the away games to save money but what about Paul Gosling what must be one of the best Support person’s any team could have.

There were many others who helped the team during the season including Life Member Craig Badger and of course all the sponsors and the Board of Directors

Finally the success of this year’s Seniors grades both A Grade & Sydney Shield is a reward for the new approaches that Captain Coach James Mortimer installed. As an experienced player he clearly knows the game but it was his ability to keep players focused and happy on and off the field was outstanding.

A GRADE COACH’S REPORT

This season started off with the toughest of pre-seasons. We had plenty of numbers in both Sydney Shield and the A-Grade. Morts, (James Mortimer) brought a breath of fresh air to the club, new ideas that infected the club,. It made my job so easy . We started playing in an A-Grade competition that was a completely different format to any other year. There were 15 teams, which included four sides that had spent plenty of money. Everyone had to play each other once, and then it was to be split into 3 divisions. The top 4, who were to sort out A Grade and A Reserve. Then a top 8 semi finals series. We set our eyes on the top 8 . The season had its ups and downs along the way, but this was the best year of football I have had in a long, long time ! Getting back to the footy, the last 8 weeks of the year is where we hit our straps. We were winning with aggression in both attack and defence. We always turned up with the right attitude. When Morts asked me to captain coach I had to have a long think about it because I still wanted to be one of the boys. I thought that the hardest part of the job was going to be be making the tough decisions, however the boys made it very easy for me, they were an absolute pleasure. Geoff Alder..... he is the best. I needed someone on the side line that I could trust and who had the respect of all the boys and he killed it. Thank you very much Geoff . We beat Christian Brothers in the first week of the semi finals to earn a week off. This was a tough game with several of the boys suffering injuries. Next we got to play our arch enemies, Forestville and we gave it to them. Again. Then the big one. The Grand Final. Up against North Sydney Brothers and we dominated them. It was definitely the best performance of the year, by far. Belrose 28 - North Sydney Brothers 6. I would like to thank the support staff. Our manager Tom Nugent, he was on fire. Had everything organised from the jumpers to player cards, anything I needed he was there. So thank you very much. Also a big thank you to Sue Alder, Norm Nugent , Scotty Cable , Dave Bran and Gozo. The supporters were sensational and very vocal. On behalf of the boys thank you very much. Thanks. I hope we can do it all again next year and defend this premiership .

Love, Stanza Scott Hanley (Captain - Coach)

A GRADE PLAYER PROFILES

(In the jerseys numbers they wore in this years Grand Final) 1) Phil Domjen – Phil was the man you wanted up the back. Under the high balls, alone against runaway Opposi- tion, nothing fazed him all year. Awarded the MVP in the Grand Final victory. 14 games, (115 total). 4 tries and 4 goals. 2) Alex McKenzie - Alex played almost every position in the backs and settled for the wing by the years end. Was eve- rywhere he needed to be when required, obviously as 2nd highest try scorer. 13 games, (27 total). 8 tries. 3) Shem Grieves - First year with Belrose, Shem worked hard all year with both Sydney Shield and A Grade. Scored 2 tries in the Grand Final and unlucky not to be MVP. 6 + 16 games, (22 total). 4 tries. 4) Corey Murphy - Joined us halfway through the season and his efforts on the field became instantly noticeable. Works long and hard all day and hates to lose. Got married the week after the Grand Final to cap a big year. All the best for the future Corey and Amy. 9 + 1 games, (10 total). 5 tries and 28 goals. 5) Jason Crannage - Only Jason’s 2nd year with the club and very much at home on the wing. Got some game time with Sydney Shield and scored a hat trick on debut. Worked hard to be in the Grand Final, gaining a last minute medical clearance for his broken nose and fractured check bone, received in a tough semi-final encounter 2 weeks earlier. 11 + 2 games, (25 total). 3 tries. 16) Brandon Scott - One of the clubs top 4 highest capped players. 19th season playing for Belrose. Brandon’s urge to play resurfaced late in the season, with his presence at No. 6 (16) strengthening the backline enormously. 6 games, (359 total). 2 tries. 7) Mitchell Gibbons - Played a variety of positions around the middle and finally found halfback his spot, again. Kicks in play and niggle being just some of his fine attributes. Unlucky to miss the last 7 minutes of the Grand Final due to one of those attributes. 13 games, (56 total). 4 tries. 8) Tom Needham - Tommy was always going to be there in the end. Played most of the year with us and gave equally for Shield as well. His ability to rile the opposition evened up the numbers on the field in the Grand Final. 10 + 10 games, (269 total). Swears blind it should be 286. 1 try. 9) Scott Hanley - Stanza took on the role as Captain and Coach and never missed a beat. Rallied the players all year, on and off the field. Should perhaps reconsider being the last to leave a party, to ensure his 3 o’clock curfews are adhered to. Played every game, bagged 3 tries including the open- ing 4 pointer in the Grand Final 16 games, (85 total). 3 tries. 10) Anthony Ballard - Came back well rested after only 1 game for us last year. Tony’s enthusiasm on the field was always contagious and inspired the rest of the pack to emulate his input. 12 games, (161 total). 0 tries. Not through lack of effort thou. 11) Liam Jones - Jonesy - The Quiet Achiever. Took on all comers with some devastating hit-ups, every game, 70 minutes at a time. Had 2 Shield games this year and you can bet it won’t be his last 13 + 2 games, (129 total) 1 try. 12) Mathew Nugent – Wasted out wide, Mat finally got to play in the back row, where he could use his size and speed more often. His first game at No. 12 earned him Player’s player and later a game with Shield. 15 + 1 games, (126 total). 2 tries. 13) Jackson Cosh - Jack is “The Lock”. Hit up’s, defence and running angles. Can do it all and never gives up. Managed 1 Shield game this year but destined to be a regular. Leading try scorer and 2nd highest point scorer for the season. Only other player to play every game. 16 + 1 games, (200 total). 13 tries. Not a bad year Coshy. 14) Liam Alder -After a year hiatus, “Hollywood” replaced his brother Luke in the squad. Luke was elevated to Shield status and proved that he had what it took. Well done Luke. Meanwhile Liam worked off the bench as utility hooker (amongst other roles) and it appears from the team’s success, we have been using the wrong Alder. 9 + 2 games, (251 total). 1 try. 15)Jake Layton –jake was one of the U19’s to graduate to A Grade this year, having tested the wa- ters last year. This year he was given hooking, pivot and wing duties to determine a position and was successful in all of them. Also proved handy at 4 and 2 pointers.

(Continued from page 30) 12 Games, (71 total). 4 tries and 11 goals. (3rd highest point scorer) 6) Andrew Needham - Another of the highest capped players for the club, this was Noddy’s 25th consecutive season with the club. A club record. His understanding of the game was invaluable, not only when on the field but also when it was time to lead the team in a well earned song on the bus ride home from North Sydney Oval. 10 Games, (366 total) Nil tries but 1 Field Goal. (Valley 48 – Belrose 1) Well done Noddy. 17) Tom Betts - The other U19 to begin his time with A Grade. Celebrated 202 games with the club last year. Bettsy played off the bench to great effect in the forwards and was always purposeful in attack and de- fence. Due to an “unfortunate” mix up (by the officials) at the Grand Final, was not allowed to take the field. Apparently it was “her word against mine”. Sorry mate. 14 Games, (216 total), 1 try. 18) Michael Higgins - Missy never failed to inspire the team, whether from the first handshake to the last hit up. A happier guy to run full tilt into the abyss, has yet to be found on a footy field. His flowing, curly red locks made for an even more impressive sight this year. 14 games, (161 total) 1 try. 19) Blair Dixon - Ralphy may not be the biggest prop out there, but he never let that stop him. Always vocal on the bench with plenty of comments on his mates’ efforts and couldn’t wait to get out there and do plenty of it himself. 13 Games, (51 total). 1 try. 20) Vangelis Dimas-Herd - Geli - The Motivator, talked the talk in the sheds and backed it up plenty on the feild. Easily his best year with A Grade. 1st try in 10 years. Still owes us 9 Nudie Runs thou. Probably the only person to spend less on haircuts than Missy. 13 Games, (135 total). 1 try 21) James Cable – Left us to explore the wilds of Europe during the year, but returned for the back half of the season. Helped out with the goal kicking duties and was unlucky not to get a run in the G.F. 9 Games, (255 total). 1 try.

Unfortunate not to get a run in the Grand Final, but celebrated with his mates in true style. 11 Games, (35 total). 1 try. 23) Dorian Smith - Doz, also being one of our 4 most capped players, should’ve had more sense than to answer his phone when Stanza called. 24 seasons with the Eagles and still going strong. Was leading the race to 400 games but it looks like he will need another full season. Leads by example and to hell with the consequences. 5 Games, (384 total). 1 try. 24) Ben Pickering - Benny too was elevated to Shield this season, managing to play 18 out of their 20 games and yet still managed to qualify for A Grade finals in the first 7 rounds. (For other clubs reading this). Ben has joined the hallowed ranks of 300 games for the club with this seasons efforts. Congratula- tions mate. 5 Games + 18, (300 total) and still going with Shield this year. 1 try. Honourable Mentions: Brandon Brown - “Sutto” ended up with more nicknames than you could keep up with by the seasons end. Played 7 games, (7 total) and was there when needed. Matthew Woodhouse – Played the first 3 games and again fell victim to a season ending injury probably career. Helped out all year again on the water. Thanks Woody. 3 Games (37 total). 1 try and 3 goals. Josh Tuitupou – Played 3 games to start and was impressive enough to be required by Shield. Went on to play most of the season there, with the odd game back for us. Notably, never scored a try, with us. Will be fondly remembered for the hit heput on the Willoughby lock in our 18 all draw. 4 games + ( ? total) Christian Bates, Charles Buttrose, Joe Foiaka, Steven Georgas, Andrew Gibbons, Luke Grant, Luke Johnson, James Keetels, Dale Mawhinni, Mitch McKenzie (99 games), Lochlan O’Brien, Santana Palmer, Bobby Rosser and Ken Szeremetia

UNDER 19s COACH’S REPORT

In my second year of coaching the Under19s we again finished the season in 3rd position bowing out in the preliminary final against the eventual premiers Berowra. We never really troubled the top teams, Berowra and Narrabeen, during the season and these two sides were clearly stronger than any of their opposition. Belrose had not fielded a team for this age group for many years so the squad was relying heavi- ly on players coming up from last years 17s team. Only two players backed up from the 19s of 2012. We struggled for players at the start of the season and went into the first game of the sea- son without any trials. Two setbacks at the start of the season had a major bearing on our ability to seriously challenge the top teams. Firstly, of the five Belrose players who were playing SG Ball for Manly, only Beau Abrahams and Charles Buttrose returned to play, then in the first match of the season, Danial Paterson, who was the captain and play maker for the Under17s last year, suffered a season ending shoulder injury. We were also without the Knox Grammer boys who were a major part of the 17s line up in 2012. Jeremy Atkins did play some matches but was not able to train with us. Without doubt the most telling problem that beset the team was that we had no half-back or five- eighth. We also had no depth of genuine prop forwards. Front rowers, Travis Falkingham, Jess Ball and Rob Fifita were all unavailable for lengthy periods due to injury. We had plenty of backrowers and had to move them into other positions. Beau Abrahams played at five-eighth and Luke Betts played half-back. The season was really a rollercoaster of highs and lows and the best example of this was in the last two matches before the semi-finals when we played Manly Cove in back to back games. In the first match we had only 12 players and were further reduced to 11 for a period due to injury. We came back from being 12 points behind in the second half to win in the last minutes of the match. The following week with 15 players we played very poorly and were beaten by a 12 man Manly Cove team. Probably our best performances were against Pennant Hills who we beat convincingly on each occasion and recorded our best statistics for set completions and we committed fewer mistakes. We had by far the smallest forwards in the competition. Ken Szeremeta and Callum George were the cornerstones of the pack, weak in and weak out. Luke Betts and Beau Abrahams, though playing out of position were always good performers. Our strike player was undoubtedly Charles Buttrose from fullback, who has all the attributes to develop into a fine player. While he prefers fullback, he could seriously consider a move to the halves. We relied enormously on ‘Chuck’ and he never failed to deliver. It was disappointing that we were again not able to ‘peak’ at the end of the season. Losses to the top teams during the season, I believe left the boys with a lack of self belief. This led to some un- necessary risk taking and subsequent poor completion rate in the finals. To conclude, it was a pleasure to coach this group of young men. The team was mainly Under 18s and Beau Abrahams was eligible for 17s. Most are eligible to play again in 2014. Team har- mony within the group was very good and this made it easy for the new players who joined the team to feel at home. None of this could have been achieved without the great work done by Dave White and Gary Bitmead as trainers and advisors. Dave Paterson is the master manager and was on top of all that is required. Also, thanks to Sue Alder for strapping, equipment and her professional health knowledge. I wish the players well in the future, especially those who will be sitting the HSC exams and hope many will return to Belrose in 2014.

UNDER 19 PLAYER PROFILES

Beau Abrahams (Five-Eighth) – Forced to play out of position all year. Great natural runner of the ball and more accustomed to wearing number 12. Made plenty of long runs and scored his fair share of tries. Always busy in defence.

Season Stats : 12 Tries, 1 Goal. 2013 Games : 17(19s)+3(17s)=20

Sam Argue (Lock) – Unfortunately, Sam was injured and missed the last 12 weeks of the sea- son with a broken thumb and then an ankle injury. I hope he returns to have a crack in 2014.

Season Stats : 4 Goals.2013 Games : 8 Total Club Games : 41

Jeremy Atkins. (Utility) – Jeremy was unable to train with us due to his commitments with Knox Rugby but helped out on game day on a number of occasions. He played in the back row and also fullback and always handled it well.

Season Stats : 02013 Games : 6

Total Club Games : 145

Jess Ball (Prop) – Jess had persistent hamstring problems that limited his appearances but he finally got on top of them at the end of the season when we saw something of what he is capable of.

Season Stats : 1Try, 4 Goals. 2013 Games : 9Total Club Games : 53

Luke Betts (half-back) – When Patto was ruled out after the first match, Luke moved to half- back and proved to be the most solid and dependable player in the team. He captained the team all year. His value to the team was most evident when he didn’t play and the side struggled for direction and lost to Manly Cove. Never missed a training session and always offered construc- tive and positive messages to the team. His game was mistake free and he was able to develop a kicking game that proved his adaptability.

Season Stats : 3 Tries.2013 Games : 14Total Club Games : 222

Daniel Blumer (Prop) – Daniel turned up after the season started and became the first choice prop in the team. The classic no fuss no frills front rower. He took the ball up on the first play re- lentlessly and fearlessly and never took a backward step. He was outstanding when we beat

Charles Buttrose (Fullback) Chuck made all the difference when he came back to play for us after the SG Ball season. Outstanding fullback who can do it all. His desire to compete and passion for the game make him a powerful force. I believe his toughness and ability to use the ball as well as his speed could provide him with a future at half or 5/8th.

Season Stats : 13 Tries. 2013 Games : 13(19s)+3(As)=16

Total Club Games : 190

Charles Chapman (2nd row) – Choc was one player who played every game of the season and rarely missed a training session. He loves and treasures the Belrose jersey. He listens to the coach and does his best to apply in the game what is practiced at training. He is not a naturally gifted athlete but his positive traits will see him a success in life.

Season Stats : 1Try. 2013 Games : 17 Total Club Games : 52

Travis Falkingham (Prop) – Travis carried a dodgy shoulder that got the better of him from time to time but when he was fit and healthy he showed he is very capable tough, ball runner and tackler. Late in the season he suffered a leg injury and missed most of the last month of football.

Season Stats : 0 2013 Games : 12Total Club Games : 25

Rob Fifita (Prop, 2nd row) – Rob only played a few games before braking his collarbone and missing 8 weeks of football leading into the semi-finals. He came off the bench and played well in the last two weeks. He really has the potential to be a good player but needs to commit to training if he wants to realize that potential.

Season Stats : 1 Try, 1 Goal. 2013 Games : 6 Total Club Games : 69

Callum George (Lock, hooker) – One of just two players who played 19s in 2012. Cal had a great season and ran the ball for more metres than any one else in the team. Probably more ef- fective as a dummy-half. Super fit with a work rate to match. Competes hard and never gives up trying.

Season Stats : 7 Tries, 3 Goals. 2013 Games : 15 Total Club Games : 28

Ben Goodwin (Utility Player) - Ben joined the team very late in the season, A good all round player who can play various positions in the team with confidence and skill, also a very handy goal kicker.

enormous natural ability and talent. Once he got over an early season shoulder injury he showed he has the speed, strength and rugged toughness that you need to be a good player. In an ideal world he would have been left to learn in just one position but he ended up playing fullback, cen- tre, 5 / 8th and lock. He scored possibly the best individual try of the season against Manly cove by running 80m beating many players along the way.

Season Stats : 3 Tries, 7 Goals. 2013 Games : 11 Total Club Games : 11

James Heuston (winger) – I was guilty of underestimating Jamie’s ability after a couple of early season games. Later in the season when he had further opportunities he showed what he is ca- pable of. He scored some great tries and was solid and reliable in carrying the ball and defend- ing. He was always at training and is an important member of the team group.

Season Stats : 3 Tries. 2013 Games : 16 Total Club Games : 44

Aaron Jarvis (Prop) – Aaron came over to Belrose after previously having played for Harbord. He quickly settled and was an important member of the team. He played best coming off the bench and on a number of occasions provided a real impact that changed the game in our fa- vour.

Season Stats : 3 Tries. 2013 Games : 15Total Club Games : 15

Cooper Judd (Centre, winger) – Cooper is strong and athletic and has the potential to be a good outside back. He is new to League from Union and he had some trouble adjusting to the different style of defence. Unfortunately he got injured very early in the semi-final and missed the final.

Season Stats : 02013 Games : 10 Total Club Games : 10

Peter Kemp (hooker) – With Cal and Ken, Kempy is the hardest working player in the forwards. He usually topped the tackle count and his timing for running from dummy-half was good. He has spirit and determination and hates losing. His dodgy shoulder was always a concern and I hope it recovers fully for next season.

Season Stats : 3 Tries. 2013 Games : 11 Total Club Games : 117

Hayden L’Estrange (Centre, winger, fullback) – Hayden came along during the season having never played League before but with a history of success in Union. He is intelligent and learns quickly. He settled in at right centre where I think he can develop into a good player. He has size and reach so if he focuses his training on speed and strength he could be a real handful for the opposition.

Season Stats : 1 Try. 2013 Games ; 12 Total Club Games : 12

Adam Lumsden (centre) – Adam is a good aggressive ball runner and tackler. He returned from a shoulder injury in time for the semi-finals and played wing which didn’t suit him as much as cen- tre. He always gave 100% effort and could lift the team with his bursts from dummy half.

Jason Perry (centre, lock ) – Jason plays with a real enthusiasm that is completely natural. He also plays Union and AFL. He is one of the easiest going blokes you could wish to meet and is always having fun. His game probably suffered at times because he may over commit himself by taking on so many activities.

Season Stats : 3 Tries, 1 Goal. 2013 Games 15 Total Club Games ; 15

Luke Saldern (winger) – Sal is one of the real likeable characters in the team. It would be safe to say that he does not possess the skills to make it as a professional league player but he does have a set of values around mateship and team work that will see him a success in life. He con- tributes greatly to the culture of the team at training, in the sheds and on the field with his positive and enthusiastic comments and his dry sense of humour.

Season Stats : 3 Tries. 2013 Games : 16 Total Club Games : 30

Ken Szeremeta (2nd row) – This is what I wrote about Ken last year and nothing has changed: Probably the hardest hitting tackler yet one of the smallest forwards in the competition. Pound for pound the toughest in the team. Spilled plenty of blood for the team and was always looking for ice at the end of the game. Always hit the defence hard when carrying the ball and often pene- trated. A favorite amongst the players in players-player voting after each game.

Under 17s that helped out. There were a few under 17s who backed up for the under 19s. These players deserve recognition especially as the 17s played mostly with less than 13 players. Andy Layton was the most notable, on a couple of occasions he travelled great distance to get to the 19s game after the 17s had played. He played in the starting side at half-back after the 17s were eliminated from the competition. Andy will be a key player in the 19s of 2014. UNDER 17s COACH’S REPORT

All things considered, the 2013 U17’s ended up having a pretty good year………. After starting the last few seasons with at least 20 players on the books, we started this year with 14 registered players, one who ended his season in a pre-season trial game with a fractured col- larbone, another with a long term ankle injury with surgery delaying his start until the last few rounds and a third who missed most of the season after a string of injuries which were mostly in- flicted off the field, which in all left us struggling to field a side. Yet with a pretty determined week-to-week recruiting program from all involved and a strong core of around 10 or 11 players, if nothing else, this team learnt to overcome adversity this year. First- ly by sticking together and seeing the season out, but more importantly they found a way to com- pete and win games with only 11 or 12 players by digging deep when the going got tough. The end result was a much-deserved 4th spot finish and a semi-finals appearance. While they re- ally took it to NSB in the first half of the minor-semi trailing 10-8 at half time, weight of numbers finally wore them down in the second half, bowing out of the semis 34-12. The highlight of the year and probably the season defining moment was their 18-10 win against Narraweena at Beverley Job back in round eight. Starting with 12 players, we were soon down to 11 after yet another injury and then down to 10 players for the last 10 minutes as the referee de- cided to send another off for supposed time wasting when we were already two players down. The guys hung on for the last 10 minutes, playing smart field position and forcing the big, but tir- ing Narraweena forwards to keep coming off their line, denying Narraweena a late come back win at their home ground. It was times like this that actually made it a pretty special year…….. We couldn’t have made it through the year without our part-time team that helped us out on a week-to-week basis. Thanks Beau, Ben and Nate Argue, Luke, Cam, Rob, Sean and Jordan Z, we really appreciated your help throughout the year. Also, particular thanks go to the core group of players who regularly made it to training, rain, hail or shine, no excuses – you know who you are. These guys showed great commitment to the team and really held things together when they could easily have fallen apart. It’s that kind of atti- tude and commitment that will take you places. Really good to see the Belrose Club spirit was also alive and well this year with a number of the U17’s playing up in the U19’s during the year when they were down on numbers. Won’t ever for- get Stevan’s bone crunching tackle right on the try line against Pennant Hills U19’s to deny a cer- tain try. Andy (9 games), Ben G. (5 games), Stevan (1 game), Jarrod (1 game), Daniel (1 game) Congratulations go to our Captain Josh Martin, firstly for reaching the 100 games milestone for Belrose this year and for his well-deserved selection in the Manly U16’s Harold Mathews Rep Team. Massive thanks to Dave Gordon for managing the team again this year and same goes to Rich- ard Layton as our First Aider, we greatly appreciate your help and support. Also a huge thank you to Mark Soden for his highly valued input and assistance both at training and on game day this year. We really benefited from your insight and immense knowledge of the game. Great to have you involved as you really proved to be a great mentor to the guys and hope to see you involved again next year! Harry Georgas

Oli Baierl Yet another great year for Oli, who is also one of those players that everyone loves to play alongside. Fiercely loyal, will cover your back against any opposition and is a real handful for defenders on our left edge. An inspirational player who is committed to the cause and one of our “go to” players when we needed something special. Jarrod Cox Jarrod returned stronger than ever after serious injury last year to become one of our most punishing defenders in the ruck, forcing the attack to think twice about their running line. Greatly benefited from working with Mark Soden, one of the NRL’s best hookers, further develop- ing his intelligent dummy half play and improving his temperament to avoid being baited by the opposition. Unfortunately was troubled with shin splints during the season restricting the number of games played this year, although glad to see that Jarrod racked up 50 games for the club this year. Stevan Dobrich Great to have Stevan back with Belrose after he racked up 50 games with the team way back in 2006, then playing Union the last 7 years. A flying winger, Stevan was al- ways dangerous on the right edge with pace to burn. A determined player who works hard on his game. Billy Dreves A late season recruit from Union, it was great to have Billy in the team. A real character and super enthusiastic, Billy improved week by week by learning new skills at training and putting them into action on game day. Well done Bill. Alex Evans A new player to Belrose with a promising background in UK Rugby. Unfortu- nately Alex broke his collarbone in an early season trial which ended his season. Alex worked hard in the pre-season and looked the goods at training, so really disappointing to lose him for the year. Hope to see you back next year. Ben Georgas Another player who really stepped up his game this year. Many strong defen- sive displays, particularly when niggled by the opposition, especially against Avalon. Directed the left side attack from half back developing a good combination with a barnstorming Oli. Ben also played 5 games with the U19’s gaining valuable experience for next year’s U19’s. Brad Gordon A nagging ankle injury from last season which was further damaged over the off-season saw Brad visiting the surgeon before he’d played a game this year. Great to see Brad back for the last 5 games causing havoc in the centres. Will be great in the U19’s after a full pre-season. A dam- aging runner and defender on his day. Andy Layton A great year for Andy as play-maker at five-eighth, bulked up over the off season and naturally super-fit, developed a great combination with Dan at fullback to setup numerous attacking raids down the right side while defended strongly. Also played nine games with the U19’s gaining valuable experience for next year and impressed many with his performances. Josh Lea A great follow up year for Josh after a big year of improvement last year. Confi- dence has grown yet again and Josh really stood up and was counted when we really needed him this year, racking up plenty of Best & Fairest points with consistent displays. Loved the physi- cal stuff at training during the week, then took it onto the field on game day which invariably led to a few injuries along the way, although Josh managed to play in all our games this year, one of only 5 players to achieve this feat. Thomas Levido Another late season recruit, it was great to see Tom back in the Red and Gold of Belrose after an early season stint in Union. Recovered really well from an early season

knee injury to play an important part in our run to the semis. A quality winger with great defence and safe under the high ball, Tom filled in admirably at fullback for our semi. Daniel Martin Really settled into fullback role this year, Daniel was awesome under the high ball and is an excellent defender, both one-on-one and when working in the line. Also has a super strong running game, combining really well with Andy at five eighth. Daniel also racked up 50 games for the club this year. A really big improver after finding his home at fullback and was even more impressive when forced to play a demanding dual hooker/fullback role on a few occa- sions due to injury. Well done D’lad! Josh Martin Our inspirational and highly talented skipper, Josh is developing into the complete package, benefiting greatly from his involvement with the Manly Harold Matts rep team. Mr. Perpetual motion, Josh never stops working in attack or defence with his infectious enthusi- asm for the game. Far and away our top try scorer, invariably gets the try we need to win the game with blistering speed and determined running. A great trainer who always works hard on his game, even at the expense of a few laughs, a sign of a true champion who’s prepared to make a few mistakes to push his limits and learn a new skill……impressive stuff. Congratulations on 100 games for Belrose!!! Ben Schimek Another really frustrating year of injury for Ben both on-field and off-field. With talent to burn, we look forward to seeing Ben get a full season under his belt. Finally made it back for the last round game against Narraweena, then unluckily broke his hand in the last few minutes, cruelly ruling Ben out of the semi-final.

Josh Smith Another new player to Belrose, Josh joined the team early on and was one of the few that came through full pre-season training and trial games. With a great attitude, always willing to learn and with a bit of size on his side, Josh played most of the season in the demand- ing front row. Josh never shirked the hard work and never stopped trying. A great addition to the team. Charlie Soden Also great to have Charlie back with Belrose after he racked up 37 games with the team back in 2005. Charlie is now just short of 50 career games after playing another 11 games this year. Charlie has worked hard on his return to League, both at training and on game day. Played some great footy on the edges with speed to burn, plenty strong and great one-on- one defence. Really impressed with his attitude and determination to succeed. Jordan Thomas Second year in Rugby League and another great year from Jordan. While hampered by a nagging ankle injury all season, Jordan is a powerhouse who gives everything he’s got, week in, week out, which makes him one of those players that everyone wants to play alongside and is an awesome team player. A great attacking weapon, terrorised the opposition down the right edge.

From the Manager

A big thank you to all of the parents and team officials, a fantastic bunch of parents and boys we had an awesome season becoming firm friends. Most importantly, on behalf of everyone involved with the team we would like to thank our coach, Luke Grant. Luke had been assistant coach for two years and this year he stepped up to the coaching position – taking us all the way to a Prem- iership! He is a lovely guy and great mentor for our young men. Congratulations Luke on a job well done.

From the Coach

What a difference a year makes!! Last year, we walked off St Matthews Farm despondent as an- other finals series slipped through our fingers. Fast Forward 12 months and the might Belrose Under 15’s were celebrating as premiers at . Grand Final Day was an outstanding way to cap off an amazing season, but it was a long road to get to that point.

2013 brought a fresh start as we welcomed four new players to the team during the pre season. Each contributed strongly during the year and added to the depth of our side. We had a strong start to the season, winning five of our first seven game in convincing fashion. We scored ‘a thou- sand’ tries and our attack looked as sharp as any junior team I’ve seen. At the half way point of the year, we found ourselves in second place on the ladder. However, it was a familiar tale as we stumbled against both Manly Cove and Narraweena. This said you could feel a confidence throughout the squad; there was real self belief. It’s fair to say that the two months that followed were extremely frustrating. We battled the weather, a number of injuries and two forfeits and played only a handful of matches. Despite this, we managed to hold onto second place at the conclusion of the season behind minor premiers Manly Cove. We were very consistent through- out the year, with a for and against of nearly 300! The boys lost just 3 games all season and de- served their spot in the major semi final.

After playing some pretty ordinary footy in the two weeks prior, the team responded in outstand- ing fashion throughout the finals series. I was most impressed by the attacking style of football we played and the grit and determination that we showed. This was on display during our first semi final, where we were too strong for Cromer and set up a clash with Manly Cove… And what a contest it was. Without a doubt it was the most exciting, draining, up and down game of football that I’ve been a part of. After falling behind 24-6 just before half time, we scored 30 unanswered points to secure our first Grand Final birth. That was the turning point for us.

A special thank you must be made to our Under 14 player, Daniel ‘Watto’ Watkins who played finals footy for us. He made a fantastic contribution to the team with his superb defence and great yards up the middle.

Two weeks later the big day arrived... The Grand Final! Although it was a tense week (for some more than others, just ask Brad) the boys didn’t let themselves down. We played clinical football and competed hard for 60 minutes. After being in front 24-6 at half time all look good but the sec- ond half was a little more nerve racking. Cove clawed back to 24-24 before our fighting spirit dragged us back from the brink. As the siren sounded on our season, all of the hard work had payed off. 38-24… We were premiers! Thanks to the Belrose community who all came down and

supported us on the day. Those kind of things make a huge difference and are much appreciat- ed.

A huge ‘thank you’ must go to the amazing team of coaches and managers who made this year possible. Firstly to our irreplaceable assistant coach and trainer… Brad, you are the heart and soul of this team and worked tirelessly for the boys. There is no one who puts more time or effort into this club. Thank you not only for this year, but for everything you have done for this team over the past six years. I’d like to extend this sentiment to Alf and Brownie who ran the water this year and always helped out at training. Finally to our trusty manager Sue and her scorer Phil, thank you for dealing with the emails and phone calls and allowing Brad and I to focus on the coaching. Your hard work never goes unnoticed.

I have really enjoyed being involved with a wonderful group of players and parents this year. It’s been an absolute pleasure working with you all. We had no problems all season which is almost unheard off! For me, Grand final week typified our season and the culture that has been created. Seeing the team their families at our ‘bonding session’ was further proof of this. You can bet that not many other teams did that the night before the GF. Yes, its true winning isn’t everything but it’s pretty special when you do. I couldn’t be prouder of our team and I know that the 100 people in the Brookie sheds after the Grand final would agree with me.

Congratulations boys! You deserved it! See you all next year; let’s go back to back!!

Go Belrose,

Luke Grant

Gus Bailey – Fullback: Again this year, Gus proved that he is one of the most explosive players in the competition. Time after time he made something out of nothing, scoring some freakish tries. There was no better example of this than his effort on the stroke of half time against Manly Cove in the semi final. He was as safe as houses under the high ball and saved as many tries as he scored. Even a shoulder injury couldn’t slow him down. Congratulations on a great year Gus.

Jack Hogarth – Wing: The boxing obviously helped because Jacko was a knockout this year. He was one of our most consistent players this season and brought his game to a new level. Not on- ly was he strong in defence but his finishing was superb. The Grand final summed up how far Jack’s year; he was the two try hero and worked hard all day. It’s become typical of what we ex- pect from him.

Nathan Douglas – Centre: Playing in the centres again this year, Nathan became an important piece of our right side attack. He was never afraid to roll his sleeves up and help the forwards out with a powerful scoot. Nathan definitely saved his best footy for the finals and was an integral part of our success. He is calculated, methodical and consistent, what else could you ask for. We love having you at Belrose mate.

Callum Armstrong – Centre: Undoubtedly, there is no better athlete going around than Callum. He’s fast, tough and strong. Length of the field tries almost becomes the norm when you watch him play. Despite struggling with shin splints throughout the season, the ‘Belrose Thoroughbred’ was again up there will our best players. When the game’s the balance, there is few you’d rather have the ball than Callum. He’s a try scoring machine.

Blake Robinson – Wing: Blake fit straight into Belrose in his first year with the club. There was no harder worker throughout the year and this was evident in his improvement from week to week. One of my favourite moments from this season was when Blake scored his first try against North Sydney Brothers. The boy’s reaction said it all. He has been a pleasure to coach and I’d love to see Blake back again next year.

Keia Maino – 5/8 Affectionately known as ‘Simon’, Keia had an outstanding season. There is no one tougher or more determined in the competition. He relished playing in the halves again this year and was always in our best two or three players. You couldn’t keep count of the number of times that Keia chased someone down and saved a try… It was unbelievable. If you had 13 of him on the field you’d never lose a game. ‘Simon’ is proof that you never miss leg day!

Isaac Arnold (captain) – Halfback: How about the year the captain had! In the big moments, Isaac stood up time after time. There is no better competitor out there. He has an amazing kick- ing game, great vision and pure speed. There isn’t much he can’t do! The best players stand up in the finals and there is no doubt he did that. A real leader and lets his game do the talking - Isaac is a perfect example of this. If you’re looking for a better season than the one that Isaac had, you’ll be searching for a while. Congratulations skipper.

Lachlan Sarv – Front/Second Row:They don’t come much tougher than Sarvie. After a missing a portion of the year with a ‘broken face’ it was great to see Lachlan return to our side. He threw his body around week after week and had to be one of the smallest front rowers going around…That never stopped him though! Sarvie was definitely a leader of our forward pack this year and al- ways fired up for the big game. He is a great talker and great player.

Josh Brand – Hooker: The barge over try from dummy half is known as ‘The Brandy’ for a reason. No hooker has scored more tries over the last couple of years than him. Still, he offers so much more than that. Brandy is always among the top tacklers every week and distributed the ball ex- tremely well all season. Josh’s vision improved this year and he always picked the right moment to challenge the defensive line. Brandy had another outstanding year, bringing up his 100th game on Grand Final day. Welcome to the club

Josh Moi Moi – Front Row: More often or not, Moi Moi led the way this year, especially early on in big games. When the hard work was there to be done Josh was always heavily involved. With the ball in hand, he can be one of the most damaging runners in the comp and he rarely misses a tack- le. Moi Moi was one our strongest on Grand final day and really stood up to the Manly Cove for- wards.

Nathan Argue – Second Row: Nathan was one of the aggressors in our team this year and was never afraid to be physical. Running off Isaac and Keia he always made great metres when we needed him most. Even though he plays in the second row, ‘Natan’ showed off his skill level this year and was an important part of all our sets of six. He stood up to become a real leader of the for- ward pack and played some outstanding football this year.

Josh Lenon – Second Row: Josh had another terrific season and took his game to a new level. He was among our best defenders each and every week and always took the ball up hard. I was really impressed with the way that he finished the year off playing strongly in both the semi-final against Cromer and the GF against Cove. Josh was always an energetic and vocal influence on the field which was important to our success. Well done mate.

Joel Martin - Second Row: Coming off a broken wrist, ‘Midge’ was valuable for us again this year. A terrier in defence, Joel was an important part of our attack, setting up and scoring a number of tries. There is definitely a bit of about him! Joel was fantastic in the Grand Final and was close to, if not the best player on the field. He must have made ‘a thousand’ metres! To cap it off, he brought his 100th game in the GF as well.

Luke Hurditch – Lock After coming down from the U15’s last year, Luke provided a real spark for us this year. He added a fire, determination and was always vocal on the field. Whether it was at lock or fullback, Luke showed great skill and knew how to hit the right hole. He was consistent all sea- son and never left anything on the field. You can’t ask any more that that! It was great to have you on board this year Luke.

Carlo Maurca – Utility: Carlo was our ‘super utility’ player all year and always contributed. Pick a position and you can bet he played there at some point. New to the club, it was impressive how Carlo took this in his stride and did the job that was asked of him. He always gave 100 per cent and was valuable filling in the centres and second row when there were injuries. It was great having you play at Belrose Carlo.

Isaac Kenney – Front Row: Isaac missed a fair bit of footy throughout the year but when got on the field, he was devastating. There is no better sight in the game that Isaac making a line break; his locks blowing in the wind. In the Grand Final, Isaac was outstanding!! He scored two tries and pro- vided tremendous impact off the bench. A fully fit Isaac makes a huge difference to our side.

Giovanni Sirianna– Front Row: Gee is without doubt one of the best liked guys on the team. Not

missing a game until breaking his ankle in the major semi, holding out Manly Cove on the try line, Gee took one for the team. Gee really worked on his fitness and you could tell on the footy field. He is always a pleasure to have on the team and to coach and is no doubt one of true gentleman of the game.

Tom Jacobson – Front Row: Tom was a ‘newby’ to league but plays with many of the boys from union. A quick learner, he picked up the nuances quickly and made a great contribution. It was a great asset to have another forward coming off the bench with our interchange setup.

Senan O’Sullivan – Wing: We welcomed back an oldie but a goodie, Senan re-joined us after going to the dark side ‘soccer’. It was great to have him back on board and he was an important addition to the team as we got hit with injury after injury. A bit rusty at first, Senan improved week on week and was one of the most improved boys on the paddock.

Sione ‘Henry’ Olivetti – Front Row: An enforcer, Henry was a great addition to the team. An Ag- gressive tackler, powerful running style for forward hit-ups, he was a real asset. Passionate about his footy, so keen he snuck out to play after being grounded and dislocated his ankle on the field! We look forward in having you back in 2014 (if your mum lets you!)

UNDER 14 TEAM REPORT

Like many great sporting teams in the past (the Australian cricket team, the , the NSW Blues etc) the Under 14s embarked on a rebuilding phase throughout sea- son 2013.

Although the results show us only winning 1 game the true measure of the success of this team was shown how we had a team every week of the season.

This years Under 14’s had 18 players in the squad but unfortunately due to injuries and school commitments we only had 8 to 11 players regularly at training and not once did we field the same team for the following game. Throw in 7 new players to Rugby League and 2 players re- turning after a few years winning games was always going to be a big ask especially when play- ing against teams that have played together for a number of years.

I would love for all the boys to stick together as there is a huge amount of individual talent within all of them. If we stay together and commit that small amount extra that is needed both at train- ing and before games this team will definitely reach their potential.

Since our last game I have had my recruiting hat on and there are 5-6 players that I feel will join and compliment our team. If there is anyone that you know that is interested in playing please let me know.

I wouldn’t have been able to get through the season without the help from the following:

My Manager Pete “banana” Donaghy, trainers Cameron Shorter and Bruce Doyle, Man of the Match selectors Dave Watkins, Brad Duce and Trent Keys, and all the parents for your help and support throughout the year. To all of you a HUGE Thank You

Lastly I would like to thank Dean Griffiths the Under 13’s coach, without his support in allowing the following 13’s players to back up we would have forfeited a few games

Zac Stracey, Josh Chignell, Jack Wilson, Josh Stracey, Peter Seale, Riley O’Connell, Charlie Griffith and Cooper Dreves

Thank You boys your support throughout the season was very much appreciated

Matt Brown Coach

Dexter Anderson 5 games 2 tries TOTAL Club Games 29 Dexter started the season with guns blazing scoring a try in the first 10 minutes against the tough- est opponent we faced all year Harbord Devils. Always dangerous around the ruck we really missed Dex when he had a number of weeks off to remove some wayward toenails. The whole team were extremely happy to welcome Dexter back after his recuperation and he finished the year on a strong note.

Lachlan Brown 11 games 1 try TOTAL Club Games 190 Lachlan’s vast experience playing the game greatly assisted the new boys to the team. Spending most of the season playing fullback he put his body on the line time and time again even though he often came off second best. He would have been a much more imposing figure had he fired up like he did when we played Berowra for the last time. Go you angry thing!

James Carlson 12 games TOTAL Club Games 135 Had all our boys put as much effort into every game as James did we would have won the comp! James is one of those unsung heroes of the forward pack – a good honest player as they like to say in League circles. James works hard, tackles boys twice his size and like the Duracell bunny he just keeps going longer. To his great credit he played every game of the season and attended every training session.

Lachlan Charles 10 games 1 try 4 goals TOTAL Club Games 51 Like his namesake in the team Lachie’s experience was a huge asset for the new boys as he strived to build team structure around his running and kicking game. Lachie was often the link be- tween our forward pack and our outside men and many times provided the final ball to set our quick men away. Like many boys Lachie also plays for his school team and we certainly missed him whenever there was a clash of schedules.

Oliver Clarke 6 games TOTAL Club Games 25 Unfortunately for the team Ollie only played 6 games due to his soccer commitments. In the 6 games he played he was able to fill a number of positions. With his natural pace he was able to make some try saving tackles by running down the opposition. With a few more games and training runs under his belt Ollie’s game would improve immensely. Ollie’s greatest attribute to the team was his ability to get everyone laughing even if it was during an important moment.

Henry Colville 9 games 1 TOTAL Club Games 9 Another debutant to league Henry was one of the smallest players in the comp but is full of heart. Sometimes a little bit slow to start the game but once he was focused nothing went past him and would run into opponent twice his size and still make valuable metres. A great memory of the sea- son was Henry’s try against Brothers – a true winger’s dash for the line out wide. A great 1st sea- son of Rugby League.

(Continued from page 50) Barney Donaghy 9 games 2 tries TOTAL Club Games 9 One of the 7 new boys to the game Barney finally succumbed to Browny’s relentless recruitment campaign and dropped his promising soccer career to play his hand at League. He had a great start to the year showing his great defensive skills saving a number of tries against Harbord and achieving Man of the Match on his first outing! Barney is a quick learner and found his feet immedi- ately proving himself to be a great asset to the side. He made some great runs from outside the ruck and his one-on-one tackling was a real inspiration to the team.

James Doyle 9 games TOTAL Club Games 33 “Jimmy D” plays the game well above his size has great controlled aggression in both attack and defence and has great acceleration off the mark. Also one of the characters of the team that makes training and games days more enjoyable for the whole team.

Nick Doyle 12 games TOTAL Club Games 82 Nick had his best year for Belrose to date. Played mainly as dummy half and was Mr reliable in that position he formed a good working relation with Will at 1st receiver. His 1 on 1 defence was his greatest improvement as well as his willingness to fill in any position that was asked of him

Luke Duce 11 games TOTAL Club Games 75 Luke played in a number of positions this year and not once complained. Finished the year playing fullback and showed heaps of courage in stopping players twice his size which prevented the scoreboard ticking over. Also was great in backing up players especially Watto and was unlucky on a number of occasions to convert these opportunities into points

Tom Henderson 12 games TOTAL Club Games 22 Tom came out of retirement to join the Under 14s this year and the team was extremely lucky that he decided to dust off those tiny boots. Confirmed as the, how do I say it, the most “compact” boy in the competition, Tom showed game after game that it is attitude not size that matters in this game. On numerous occasions at every match we played Tom was confronted with beasts twice his size thinking that he was the easy path to the try line. They soon realised the errors of their ways as they looked up at the sky and wondered what had hit them. We are still shaking our heads at how Tom managed a head high tackle against a kid 60cms taller but that’s Tom – nothing gets past him. Well done on a courageous and successful year.

Jack Keys 10 games TOTAL Club Games 109 Jack decided to try his hand at soccer this year. However a couple of weeks into the season Jack and his father (you know him, the sausage guy who runs around with the flag) decided to drop by Lionel Watts to catch a game one Saturday afternoon. Jack strolled past Browny and within 30 sec- onds Browny had an Eagles jersey on his back and was barking instructions on how to shore up

(Continued from page 51) the defence on the left side. Yes, although he didn’t quite realise it, Jack was back! Jack was com- peting with Tom all year for the ‘most compact boy’ in the competition but his presence on the field and enthusiasm for the game was a tonic to the rest of the team. Jack, ask your Dad to stop serv- ing the cheaper cuts of steak at home, get stuck in to a few each night, and next year you’ll be back bigger, stronger and eager as ever!

Will Lynch 9 games 1 try 2 goals TOTAL Club Games 9 What a year Will had! Broken nose, strained knee ligaments and then major concussion. Beautiful one day, infirmed the next! Will stepped up big time this year, taking on the Peter Sterling role in the team, directing play with his vision and improving kicking game. Scored a memorable try against Berowra and always kept the opposition second guessing. If his parents didn’t spend all that money on private schooling, thus forcing will to play another code and to miss our games, the Eagles U14s would have seen much more success!

Angus Oliver 4 games TOTAL Club Games 4 This was Gus’s 1st year with Belrose and unfortunately due to a few injuries Gus was only able to play 4 games. In those games he showed great skill and courage in defence and was never shy of taking the early hit ups. I’m sure if we had Gus week in week out our results would have been bet- ter.

Blake Robinson 2 games TOTAL Club Games Blake only played 2 games for us this year, coming down from the wing in the 15’s. As we were short in the forwards and with Blake’s natural size there was only 1 position to put him – straight to the Front Row! And didn’t he relish the opportunity. Blake took the early hit-ups and it took several defenders to take him down and also strengthened our defence in the middle. It would be a great asset to this team if Blake decided to play full time in his right age group next year.

Luke Shorter 10 games 1 goal TOTAL Club Games 10 Another convert from soccer, Luke turned up at Lionel Watts more pumped than Brynn Edelsten at a Brownlow Medal night! I doubt if any boy has had more desire to play the game than Luke. He scooted out of dummy half like he’d been doing it his whole life and his defence was remarkable given that he was brand new to the game. It only took Luke a couple of games before he had his own “Man of the Match” banana and boy did it taste good. Congratulations on a wonderful rookie year.

Daniel Watkins 11 games 5 tries TOTAL Club Games 39 Big in so many ways! Watto was our “Go To” man and our top try scorer for the year. A man with a big heart Watto gives his all every game and his enthusiasm for the game and his team is a joy to

behold which earned him the role of Co-Captain. He proved unstoppable from a restart 10 metres out. And I wish I had $10 for each time that Watto took the ball up and moved 5 opposition players 20 metres up field. Also responsible for the best line of the year: “That tackle was great – the land- ing was so soft and squishy!”

Harry White 5 games TOTAL Club Games 5 Harry is a friend of Nick Doyle who came up to watch him play. Before the whistle had blown time on Browny had Harry signed to play. Although a seasoned Union player it didn’t take long for his Dad see him make his 1st of many 1 on 1 tackles. Harry has great hands and vision and continued to improve his league skills every week.

Kieran Wilkes 7 games TOTAL Club Games 79 Kieran being a veteran of this team was also a key figure in helping the new players. Unfortunately injury prevented Kieran from playing a large part of the season. When on the field he showed good leadership and toughness by playing whilst injured. Made some great 1 on 1 tackles when needed and has a good kicking game

UNDER 13s REPORT

This year started as always at registration day a little worrying, knowing we might be light on num- bers as we were going to lose five players from the previous year, two moving away, two not play- ing for other reasons and one was changing clubs, all of whom were handy players.

I was expecting a reasonably tough season ahead and although we still had plenty of talent com- mitted from 2012 we were grateful we had acquired six new players, some of which hadn’t played any code of rugby before, others coming from union and one from the Gold Coast. So we still had plenty of work to do to gel everyone together.

Midway through the year we had recorded some close wins and some heavy losses and although we were placed at the top end of the ladder out of 12 teams we really hadn’t come close to our po- tential. In the latter half of the year we began to gel and believe in ourselves, our attitude at train- ing improved and so did our on field performances.

Finishing 4th on the ladder going into the semi-finals the teams ahead of us were starting to take notice. We defeated a good side in Berowra in Semi No. 1, and then we defeating Narraweena in a tight Semi No. 2 (who defeated us 50-0 earlier in the year). Unfortunately, in the final we were beaten by Asquith in another close game (who had also defeated us 50-0 earlier in the season) - Our guys just never gave up. In the Grand Final Narrabeen defeated Asquith 30-0. I feel Narra- been were relieved our guys didn’t qualify for the Grand Final as they knew we were on an upward spiral and knew we wouldn’t have given up.

I think all our boys improved massively as the year went on and I have no doubt we will give Nar- rabeen a massive run for their money next year. As a Coach/Father/Spectator it is extremely pleasing to see these young men play football together, their improvement has been extraordi- nary. Two years ago we won 3rd Division, last year we came 2nd in 2nd Division and this year finishing in the top 3 in 1st Division - Great stuff guys, lets keep on going.

I am also proud of the way everyone played, good hard clean football, no cheap shots, no rubbish, just footy. Superb year guys and I’ll see you all next season.

Finishing off I must thank Sam & Paul Stracey for helping me at every training session. Also big thanks to our trainers, Darren Chignell, Sean Wilson and Adam Begaud, your help as usual is in- valuable, Cheers Guys.

Now a team is not a team without a Manger and let me tell you we have the best in the business, Thanks Clarissa for everything, we all hope you will be back to help us next year.

Go Belrose!

Coach Griffo

Managers’ Report – BIG Thankyou to all parents, siblings and supporters of the U13’s for your continued support throughout the year, assistance at home games with Canteen & BBQ duties, linesmen, field pack up – Your time is greatly appreciated – Cheers Clarissa

UNDER 13s PLAYER PROFILES

ZAC STRACEY (#1) Zac has had a great year. He has matured into a good football player. He played lock and was dynamic. He runs hard and tackles harder. He is very fit and gets through a mountain of work. Keep it up and you’ll be even better next year. Games 2013 – 23 Tries – 10 Goals – 4 Total Club Games - 147

ETHAN KOCH (#2) Ethan is one of our smaller guys but you wouldn’t know it. A few times this year he ran straight over players twice his size. His defence improved all year. Hopefully he fills out a bit in the off season. Good Job Mate. PS. He has a great sense of humour. Games 2013 – 17 Tries – 1 Total Club Games – 30

KIERAN THOR (#3) Kieran is a guy who either plays well or is very quiet on the field; he has the potential to be aggres- sive in defence and can run the ball hard. When he believes more in his ability he will be great. Hope to see you next year. Games 2013 – 16 Total Club Games – 41

AIDAN BEGAUD (#4) Congratulations Aidan on joining the 100 Game Club. Aidan is fit, strong and fast. In defence he is usually great. In attack the same but he occasionally has a lack of self-belief. He should have scored 3x as many tries as he did. He just doesn’t know how powerful he is but we are working on it – when it clicks for him look out opposition. Games 2013 – 16 Tries – 4 Total Club Games – 102

JOSH STAPLETON (#5) Josh unfortunately broke his wrist early in the year and missed 6 weeks of footy. He came back played well and was sorely missed in the final against Asquith due to a training injury. He proba- bly has the best tackling technique in our team bar James. Hope to see more of you next year. Games 2013 – 9 Total Club Games - 23

JACK WILSON (#6) Jack knows how to play; he has all the skills and is a smart player but suffered a few niggling inju- ries during the season. Jack had a terrific game in the final, well done. Next year we will trouble a lot of teams with your skills. Games 2013 – 22 Tries – 11 Goals - 7 Total Club Games - 148

CHARLIE GRIFFITH (#7) Charlie has toughened up this year. He is fast and strong. He runs very hard and normally breaks the line. He is very hard to tackle head on. I wish he would learn to swerve away from the defence once in the clear. His defence is great often making 2-3 tackles in a row. He saved nu- merous tries for us from long range chases through sheer determination. Terrific year mate, keep it up. Games 2013 – 18 Tries - 5 Total Club Games - 133

JOSH CHIGNELL (#8) I made Josh our captain this year and as all good try scoring, goal kicking front rowers do, Josh leads from the front. Not only can Josh charge into the defence with much gusto he also possess- es a 5/8 like passing game and set up a number of tries for his outside men. He is tireless in de- fence and hits hard. He is a great team man, well done Josh. Games 2013 – 20 Tries – 7 Goals - 27 Total Club Games - 33

JOSH STRACEY (#9) Josh is a great team player also. As our hooker he knows his job and works his butt off to get to each play. He never lets me or his team down. He just gets the job done. He is tough also, Josh refused to come off after having his eyebrow split open and ended up with four stitches - Good stuff Josh. Games 2013 – 17 Total Club Games - 126

PATRICK TEHRANI (#10) Patrick is one of our big front rowers who runs and tackles well; he has also developed a good off load and with a bit more power behind his running he will be devastating. Good Year Pat. Games 2013 – 11 Total Club Games – 41

BRADLEY ATKINS (#11) Brad was a bit quiet this year, probably due to missing a number of trainings, although he is still very hard to tackle and hits as hard as anyone. Hope to see you next year as you are a great player. Games 2013 – 17 Total Club Games – 143

OSCAR GULLICKSON (#12) Oscar has finally grown into his body and is now running freely. He has had a fantastic year. He tackles great and hits the ball up well but his best attribute is his enthusiasm - always positive, always talking and possesses a great chase from kicks – excellent job Oscar. Games 2013 – 17 Tries – 1 Total Club Games – 57

JAMES BEANGE (#13) James played a bit of 5/8, second row and hooker for us this year. He will play wherever I put him and never whinges; he just gets on with it. He has a good understanding of the game and knows how to do his job in any position. He also has the best tackling technique in the club. He nearly cut one kid from Berowra in half. Great work James. Games 2013 – 15 Tries – 1 Total Club Games – 92

PETER SEALE (#14) Big Pete has the potential to be a terrific player. This year he seemed a little shy to show us his best. I am sure if he puts his mind to it he will be very hard to stop next year. Games 2013 – 15 Tries – 1 Total Club Games – 88

AIDAN DALEY (#15) Aidan in his second season now understands the game better and tries to stay away from the sidelines. He has plenty of speed and skill, his tackling technique is fine, he just needs to commit to his tackling more. Aidan is a nice young bloke and will be a big asset next season. Games 2013 – 15 Tries – 2 Total Club Games – 29

COOPER DREVES (#16) Super Cooper! Can this guy tackle or what. He loves it. Cooper game to us from Queensland and I am so glad he joined the mighty Belrose Eagles. Cooper often tackled twice as much than any other guy. He was our man of the match on numerous occasions. He also listens at training then actually goes out and performs exactly as instructed in a game. His running game improved immensely, hitting it up hard and straight. He also has handy offload. Super season Cooper, can’t wait to see you out there amongst it next year. Games 2013 – 18 Tries – 4 Total Club Games 18

JOHNATHAN MARTIN (#17) Jono in his first year of footy went well; he never complains and works hard. He isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. He is another guy who I can rely on to do his job and he does it well. Good year Jono and you will be better for it next year. Games 2013 – 16 Total Club Games – 16

ADAM WYARD (#18) Adam came to us from rugby and isn’t rugby poorer for it. WOW what a player! This bloke has it all; speed, step, aggression, strength, you name it he has got it. In defence Adam is exceptional also. He also knows how to find the try line. He possesses a great kicking game and is a terrific young man to boot. Adam should have scored 100 points for us this season but unselfishly passed the ball to Charlie over the try line. What a superb player. Adam we need you next year, please come back. Games 2013 – 13 Tries – 20 Goals – 5 Total Club Games – 13

JAE LAMBERT (#19) Jae is another new guy who has played a bit of rugby. Jae can run the ball and he tackles well. I think he just needs a bit more confidence and it will come a bit easier, hope to see you again next year. Games 2013 – 14 Total Club Games – 14

JORDAN BAMFORD (#20) Jordan needs to stop breaking his bones. Not at rugby league but at school. If he just played footy he would be healthy, seriously what a great guy. Jordan is more than a handy player, he can be an excellent player at times, he just needs a little more consistency, which will come with more game time. Good year Bud. Games 2013 – 9 Tries – 1 Total Club Games – 9

RILEY O’CONNELL (#21) Riley came to us from the Ferretts after they folded and yes, we are glad they did. Riley is an ex- cellent player, he can run, tackle and is extremely aggressive in doing both. He is always punctual and is an absolute pleasure to coach. If we had 13 Riley’s in our team we would never be beaten. Superb season mate, see you next year. Games 2013 – 18 Tries – 2 Total Club Games – 18

JACOB PRESTON (U12’s) Tries – 2 JACK BEGAUD (U12’s) These two guys play in the U12’s and helped us out when we were sort in the school holidays. Both played very well that day and showed they were capable of stepping up a year. Big thanks to you both from all the U13’s.

UNDER 12 REPORT

This 2013 season was another extremely successful season both on and off the field. Both the Whites and Maroon sides made it to the semi-finals with the Whites making it through to the final and the Maroons again ventured down to Brookvale Oval on grand final day. There were twenty- six familiar faces from last year in the squad and we welcomed three new players to the club – Tom Wight, Zac Thornton & James Le Goadec . That gave us a great squad of twenty-nine play- ers. We continued to train all together on a Tuesday night and split into the two weekend teams for Thursday training.

We had a host of boys bring up milestone games this year. Both jack Begaud & Liam Fitzgerald celebrated a major milestone of 100 games for Belrose. Congratulations also to ‘Rabbits’ Molyneux, Lachlan Don, Beno Anderson, Josh Zotti, Matthew Abraham, Ben Minness, Ethan Lowry and Spencer Spalding for bringing up 50 games for the club during the season. It is a mar- vellous achievement by all the boys and they should be commended on their efforts.

Off the field we had a couple of very enjoyable nights for both parents, players & siblings at the Belrose Hotel on our raffle selling night followed by a dinner & then our end of year function on grand final night back at the club house. Both occasions were great nights and I really appreciate all the support shown by the parents during the year.

Under 12 Whites Season Report

Our mighty Whites began the season full of enthusiasm and commitment in what promised to be another good season. Again we had a mix of debutants and experience that would hold us in good stead for the year. With the U12s split into two divisions and there being only six teams in the Maroons & nine in the Whites there were some formidable teams, namely Asquith, Nar- raweena & Christian Brothers in the competition. At the end of the competition proper, the Whites division was split into two semi-final series. We finished third in the second division. Our record for the year read as three wins, a draw and nine losses – a pretty tough season but the boys cer- tainly gave their best each week.

This meant that we were to play Willoughby in the first week of the semi’s in a qualifying final. We travelled to Willoughby Park and came up against a red hot Willoughby outfit that beat us in all departments – eventually going down 38 to 10. We still had a pulse though and we then moved into a knockout semi against the Ferrets. Whilst we struggled to execute the killer blows against an understrength Forestville side, our class got us home, eventually winning 16 to 6 and moving onto a final against Harbord.

I think the first ten minutes of the final was our best footy all year – moving the ball around and playing with confidence. But unfortunately we lapsed close to half time and let them score three quick tries. But after half-time & with nothing to lose we came out and matched Harbord (who did go on the following week and defeat Willoughby in the GF) and went down 26 points to 10, but with our heads held high.

Congratulations to all the boys for another very enjoyable season. Whilst the results did not go our way all year, the effort and camaraderie shown by the boys can never be doubted. We move

into the full international rules next year, we are all going to grow a few inches, put on ten kilos and muscle up into a formidable unit next year.

Under 12 Maroons Season Report

Again in 2013 the Maroons made it to the last game of the year in what has been another hugely successful year. The boys played with spirit and passion all year and I am extremely proud of them.

Just like 2012, we finished the season proper in second spot on the table – with eleven wins and three losses. There was only one team that could trouble us and yes no surprise that it was Har- bord, our tormentors from last year. But whilst we had not beaten them, we gave them a real run for their money on each occasion including leading till the last three minutes before going down 8 – 6 at Harbord on the third occasion. They were on notice that we were coming after them and we entered the semi-finals with a firm belief that we could topple them in the big games.

We faced the Ferrets in week one of the finals and played some real solid footy to win comforta- bly 30 to 6. This led us into (again like 2012) the major-semi with the unbeaten (again) Harbord Devils at Shark Park. In what was another bruising and tight contest we were unable to knock- them off. After the scores were level at 12 – all at half-time, we scored first in the second half to lead by a try, but we ran out of steam and were eventually beaten 30 points 18. It was a tough encounter and we had a few wounded out of the game. So back we go to face Ferrets again, this time in the final, to fight for the right to take a trip to Brookvale to face Harbord. We played the game with a couple of players out, but received great support from the boys from the Whites who stepped up for us, and whilst we battled a bit and dropped a lot of ball, we triumphed 22 to 6 with a couple of late tries.

So on to Brookvale we were to go, looking to seek revenge for last year’s grand final loss and de- liver that elusive victory over the reigning premiers. Alas, yet again we met a Harbord outfit that were at the top of their game on the day and they proved too strong running out 24 to 6 winners. But yet again our boys did themselves, their families and the club proud. It is a bitter pill to swal- low losing one grand final, so to lose two in a row does hurt. But to the boys credit they took the loss as well as could be expected and accepted that again Harbord were deserved premiers. But there is a steely resolve in this bunch of boys…………and we will be back again next year, where we will hopefully be ‘third-time-lucky’!

Special mentions:

Pete Asprey, Simon Molyneux & Michael Spalding – your efforts with these boys are magnificent and they really are lucky to have you caring and teaching them at training and during the games. All the hours you spend helping myself is what clubs and teams are built on and I could never thank you enough (well maybe a couple of schooners at the pub will be a start!) Your input into all the decisions we make as a squad ensure that we make more right than wrong decisions. It is not easy co-ordinating a big squad of boys like we have and your efforts are much appreciated by everyone, but especially by me.

Simone Reisp – the other rock that this squad is built around. Manager extraordinaire, most en- thusiastic and passionate supporter in the club who has a heart of gold and loves these boys. Your non-stop efforts throughout the year in managing this squad are sensational and I do not think we would survive without you! Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you – you are a legend!

Big thanks to David Mackie who once again did the manager bit on game day for the Whites as well as writing an incisive match report each week – great job again Dave and much appreciated. Also to Joe Mirabito & Mark Glass who stepped into the breach for several match reports this year – awesome and thanks guys. Thanks to Andrew Lowry & John Reisp for also doing some game day scoring for us and patrolling the touchlines at venues all over the district. Thanks again to Stuey Don for his photography through the whole year and again on grand final day

Thank-you again to all the parents who support their boys and allow them to play the greatest game of all. Your support and friendliness makes it all worthwhile Thanks for all your efforts on canteen/BBQ/raffle tickets/social nights, etc.

To the boys, yet another really enjoyable year and I hope you had a bit of fun along the way. You worked hard during the year and that provided you with many highlights on the field. It is one of the many life lessons that we can learn from football – nothing in life comes easy, you have to work at it. I really hope you all return again next year so we can do it all over again.

Thank-you again to the club & board members for allowing me to coach the Under 12’s this year. This has been another great year for the club and I hope the success on and off the field contin- ues for many years to come.

James Mirabito – This season again had patches of magic from Jimmy. James is the weapon in our pack and when he gets his running technique right, he is a handful for any team to tackle. James seemed to fire-up this year whenever we played Willoughby – not only scoring a try against them but also made his most effective attacking raids of the year. Keep up the good work James and we will see you again next year.

Jackson Mackie – Another very strong season from Jackson which saw him play a combi- nation of full-back and wing. He scored a number of cracking tries often bumping off many would be defenders. Jackson played a number of games in the Maroons side during the year and more than held his own in each game. My advice would be to remain confident and have faith in your own ability Jackson – you have plenty of it.

Lachlan Regan-Jefferson – In his second year of footy ‘Jeffo’ showed some real improve- ment as the season progressed. Playing wing and centre this season, Lachlan started to read the game much better and his much improved defence allowed him to grow in confidence. ‘Jeffo’ can be a real danger-man in attack & his length of the field try against Cromer was a ripper. Well done Lachlan and you should be proud of your year.

Oli Asprey – What a pleasure it is to have Oli in the football side. There is no doubt that this boy gives his best every week and is a great example to the other players in how he cares for the football team. Oli had by far his best game of the season in the final, where he ran the ball up with the vigour we know he has and tackled his heart out. It would also be remiss of me if I did not mention his goal kicking exploits – kicking his first of his career and then following up with several other gems. Well done Oli – you are a fine young boy and set a great example to the oth- er players. Tom Wight - In his first year of footy Tom has progressed in leaps and bounds. Starting in the centres, moving to the wing and then finding the fullback position late in the season, Tom has plenty to offer. Whilst Tom is a capable defender he is still learning all the time about the art of defence. His attack really blossomed as the season went on and he scored a number of cracking tries where he showed a great step, swerve and acceleration. Well done on a fine debut season Tom and I look forward to many great years ahead. Josh Glass – Josh had the distinction of playing every game this year which is a feat in itself. He played mostly on the wing but also being flexible to move to fullback, centres or dummy half when we needed him to. Josh reads the game well, does his best each and every week and is safe both in attack and defence. As his confidence grows I am sure he will continue to develop as a footballer. Josh brings a positive attitude to training and games and is an important part in our football team. Jack Begaud – Jack again gave his all for the Eagles this year, playing some memorable games and contributing week-in and week-out. Jack proudly notched up his 100th game for the club – a great effort. He celebrated the game with a couple of ‘meat-pies’ for good measure and a man of the match performance. On his day, Jack’s tackling technique is excellent and it inspires the play- ers around him. Jack played a number of games for the Maroons as well and did a great job. Congratulations on another successful year with the Eagles Jack and on reaching your 100 game milestone. Sam Legeyt – What can I say, this lad had an absolute cracker of a season which included his well-deserved first try for the Eagles. Sam’s tackling this year was a revelation, stringing together

back-to-back-to-back man of the match awards for his effort and technique. Sam found his run- ning game late in the year as well and consistently tore holes in the opposition defence. Sam also played a number of games in the Maroons and did himself proud on each occasion. Not only is Sam a great footballer but he is a fine young boy who conducts himself with class at all times and is a highly valued member of the team. Thank you Sam for a great year. Alex Logan – It was a year where I thought Alex came of age. One of Alex’s best attributes is his ability to cover different positions on the field. Alex spent some time in the centres and fullback (where he particularly impressed, especially defensively when the huge Narraweena lads were bearing down on him). But Alex played his best footy in the forwards where his tall frame helped him make many fine runs during the year – never giving up and striving for every metre. Alex did not shirk his defensive duties either and is to be congratulated on an impressive year. Beno Anderson – Yet again this year Beno provided the crowds with plenty of highlights. When he is on his game, he can do some very smart things – either dummying and taking on the line or feeding his outside support players with quality ball. Beno has a great attitude and gives his best every time he puts on the Eagles jumper. He can pull off some big hits in defence but does need to ensure he concentrates in that area at all times. Beno also played with the Maroons this year and did a great job. Another fine year Beno, one that you should be proud of. Joel Dempsey – Changing to the pivot role this year, Joel continued to improve as the season went on. Joel scored a number of sharp tries during the year and finished the season by scoring with his last touch of the footy. Joel was called upon to play in the Maroons on a couple of occa- sions this year and performed well. Joel will continue to develop as a footballer and the more he runs the ball and takes the line on, the better he will become. Mitch McCombe – Unfortunately, a self-inflicted foot injury curtailed a fair portion of Mitch’s year – ruling him out for most of the second half of the season. Mitch started the year impressively and had some good early season form in both attack and defence. He is gaining in confidence all the time in attack and when he realises how effective he can be as a runner – look out! His try in the semi against Willoughby was superb. Mitch’s defence has always been his strength and it contin- ued this year again. Mitch played a couple of games in the Maroons and his tackle on Big Ben from Mona Vale was just about the best I saw this season. Thanks for another fine year Mitch. Lachlan Molyneux – ‘Rabbits’ had a great season this year – leading the Whites around the park every week and playing without fear. He was the ‘go-to’ man in attack, setting up many raids on the opposition line. Lachie showed real determination in his defence this year and whilst there is always room for improvement, no-one can doubt the courage he shows. ‘Rabbits’ was called upon to play in the Maroons on a number of occasions this year and handled it well. Well done on another fine year. Zac Thornton – Another debutante in 2013, Zac fitted in perfectly from day one. Playing most of the year in the centres, Zac played a good tight, consistent brand of footy all year long. It is often tough coming to a new club and making an impact but Zac was able to do so right from the start. He was keen in defence and when he was able to get his hands on the football he showed that he had some smart attacking skills to go with him. Congrats Zac on a fine first year and we hope to see you back in the red and gold again next year. James Le Goadec – James debuted with the club this year and seemed comfortable straight away. Playing his first year of league, James showed some real potential in all parts of the game.

A damaging runner in attack, when he puts his mind to it, James causes real headaches for op- posing defensive units. James is still learning the mechanics of defence in league, but if he con- centrates, he has the ability to get better and better at it and then he will really start enjoying his footy. Welcome to the club James, I really hope you enjoyed yourself and hope to see you back again next year.

Jacob Preston – What a tremendous season, yet again, for Jake. This boy gives his all for his team and the Belrose club each and every time he runs on the paddock. I cannot speak high- ly enough of the positive impact he has on our team – both at training and in games. His work- rate continues to amaze, putting his body on the line and having a never say die attitude. He does not look the fastest runner on the training paddock but when he gets in the clear on game day not many can chase him down – he is the ultimate competitor. Thanks again Jake for your contributions this year, I am indeed privileged to have been able to coach you again this year. Spencer Spalding – The first receiver role is a demanding one, especially in mod-league, but again this year Spencer handled it really well. As the role requires more passing than running, he is often overlooked when man of the match honours are handed out – but in no way is that a reflection on Spence as he was consistently one of our better players all year. He is a vital player in the team who puts in each week and deserves much credit for the success of the team this year. His kicking game continues to improve and he can be punishing in defence when he puts his mind to it. Thanks for another great year Spence. Lachlan Don – Lachie can be a game breaker on his day. He has the ability to bust any tackle and if he can use his abundant speed he can score tries from anywhere. Lachie started the year in the forwards but was switched to the centres/wing in the second half of the year. His high- light performance was a four try effort at Mona Vale late in the year where he tore them apart. His defence is good but there is room for improvement (like everyone) in not rushing up too quick and letting the ball runner step past. Another strong year Lachie and may there be many more good seasons ahead. Finn Cantrill – Playing in the right centre for most of the year Finn showed real progres- sion this year. His attack is improving every year and he has the best ‘show-and-go’ in the team. Finn’s try in the final against the Ferrets, when we were under pressure, was the best solo effort of the year and oozed real class. In defence, Finn can get pretty fired up and he then pulls off the best hits in the league – the one against the Ferrets at LW was a cracker and it lifted everyone (including the crowd). Keep up the good work Finn & I reckon the international rules of the U13’s game next year will suit you even more. Tyrese Walker – Playing most of the year outside Spencer at five-eighth, Ty provided valua- ble support to him and continued to work hard through the year. Ty possesses a great pass & needs to utilise it more often to reach his full potential as a ball player. His defence is very sound and he plays an important role in that area on our left hand side. Once Ty realises how important communication is in his position on the footy field (game day & at training) he will develop even more as a player – well done Tyrese. Ben Minness – ‘Messi’ is a real weapon for the footy team. Big, strong, powerful and with a great running style Ben was awesome for us this year. His improvement each year has been massive and he is a star of the future. All year he was our ‘go to’ man in attack, scoring many long range devastating try’s that had the opposition getting out of his way real quick. His defence is punish- ing and included some of the biggest hits of the year. You are a real asset to this team Ben and congratulations on a stellar season. Josh Zotti – One of the most improved players this year, Josh has grown into a powerful player. Josh has gained a lot of confidence from being able to run hard and straight onto the footy – and opposition defences have had trouble dealing with him. He is a capable defender, but still has work to do in ensuring that he concentrates for the full game and moves up in that defensive line at all times. Well done Josh on a great season and I look forward to even further improvement next year.

Matthew Abraham – A real progressive year for Matthew this year. After playing the first half of the year on the wing, the coach finally realised (sorry Matty) that the forwards is his go. Matthew stepped up and played with commitment every week. Not the biggest framed boy, Matthew never gives up and belies his size. His work-rate is tremendous – running the ball & tackling at every opportunity. He also decided to employ a kicking game on major semi day – laying on a try for Billy P that had the crowd in raptures. Great season Matthew and it is a pleasure to have you in the team. Ethan Lowry – Another super season from Ethan. He is the player that every coach loves to have in his side – a workaholic in defence and sharp around the rucks in attack. No doubt he has the best tackling technique in the side, chopping down player after player with his grass cutting technique. Ethan was asked to play a lot of the year in at dummy half and did a great job – but I can’t wait to move him back to his preferred running forward role next year. Thanks again Ethan – you are a great asset for the team. Liam Fitzgerald – It was a big year for Liam who achieved a personal milestone in playing his 100th game for the club. Liam showed real improvement in both attack and defence this year. His work-rate in the middle of the ruck was high every week and he consistently tackled himself to a stand-still. He became more of a ball player as well this year and ‘popped’ some nice balls for support players to run into holes during the year. Congrats Liam – I am indeed proud. Billy Purcell – Occupying one of the wing positions, Billy is as reliable as the day is long. Not big in size, but big on courage our right winger performs week in, week out. Billy is very safe with any kick, positioning himself in the right spot on most occasions. He can find the try line and did so regularly this year, including scoring a ripper off a kick in the major semi against Harbord. Keep up the good work Billy – you are indeed an asset to this footy team. Mitchell Gray – Positioned in the centres this year, Mitch continues to get better with every game he plays. Mitch has shown real improvement in his defence in the second half of the year, learning to read the game and making a positive decision to attack the player with the ball. In at- tack, Mitch has untapped potential and had some dazzling moments this year including a great solo try in the game against Narrabeen at Shark Park. Mitch is another who will benefit from the change in rules next year and I look forward to seeing his future development. Luke Sully – Our flying fullback, Luke had another top notch season. Playing fullback for the first time this year, Luke has proved to be a star performer for the team. On many occasions this year he has sliced the opposition open, from either deep in our own half or whilst we are on the attack. This resulted in either relieving the pressure on us or him scoring a great try. Luke is still learning the defensive game from full-back and ensuring that he is not only in position and following the ball but talking to the defensive line in front of him. Luke is an integral part of the team who gives his best every week and really cares for the side. Congrats on another success- ful season Luke. Matt Reisp – Congratulations on another solid year Matt. Always in the action, Matty loves to get his hands on the footy and his enthusiastic charges are crucial for us every week. He is a ‘try scorer’ and can bob-up in the right place at any time. Matty also does a power of work in de- fence and is always a positive influence in our team, whether it is on game day or at training. Thanks for another outstanding season Matty & I look forward to another great year in 2014.

Season 2013 saw more experience in our squad this year. However, we still managed to pick up nine new players across the playing group. At the end of the season, we ended up with a group of 28 players enabling us to play 14 players in our Maroons and White teams at the end of the year. Both teams managed to get better on field results this year than in season 2012. The boys experi- ence really developed this year, so much so that the passion displayed by both teams in the finals series showed the commitment of all the boys. Watching the Maroons at Beacon Hill and the White’s play their final game at Nolan’s Reserve this year was a testament to how far the boys have come in the two years I have been involved with them. Their abilities, passion and commit- ment to the game and each other made me very proud to be involved with every one of them. The boys who have joined us this year have come a long way during the season.

One of our highlights this year was having Jamie Buhrer and Daley Cherry Evans come along for a training session late in the season. We were expecting Jamie to our training, but to have Daley come along as well was a real surprise. No words will describe the surprise and delight on the boys faces at training that night. To say it was the best training session I have ever been involved with is an understatement. If we played the best team in the comp that night, both the Whites and Maroons would have won easily such was the focus and commitment. The messages we got through to the boys during the night will be remembered for a long time to come. My thanks once again to Mark Abrahams for organising and allowing us to benefit from an award he won at the end of last year.

Coaching the boys was a real pleasure this year and I so look forward to the 2014 season should the Club see fit to have me again. The development of the players from 2012 to this year was sub- stantial for some. Seeing individual players really succeeding at different times through the sea- son was very satisfying from a coaching perspective. A few of the boys efforts should be noted, Kye Lambert in his first season achieving 56 points, Ben Watkins achieving 64 points for the sea- son, Joel McGregor for 13 goals from 13 attempts, Cody Gaughan scoring 7 tries for the Whites team and Joel Chappelow with 28 points for the Whites team. Well done to Max Gander and Tim Barwell for passing 75 club games during the season. Max and Ben Watkins will achieve 100 games during the 2014 season and we are sure to make a big celebration when this occurs. Sur- prisingly, only Max, Ben and Daniel Dunn played in all 15 Maroon’s games and Joel Chappelow and Flynn Irvin played in all 14 Whites games. Daniel managed most games for the year with 19 after backing up for four games with the Whites, well done Daniel.

Maroon’s and White’s Season in Review

Maroon’s had a win for the first game of the season vs Harbord. A win a few weeks later in the lo- cal derby vs Forestville left us all on a high for weeks. We had a different back line this year and some real commitment going forward in the middle. We competed somewhat with the boys’ school rugby commitments that did affect our game at times, but that was the way it was. Once the boys learnt how to run onto the ball, it made a massive difference to how we played. Further, working the team plays was a challenge through the year. I am so grateful for the Junior League allowing all teams to compete in the finals this year, as it meant that the boys experienced real pressure to succeed on the field to continue. Seeing the efforts of the Maroons in our final game made me very proud to be their coach. Whilst I would have loved more on field success, it was not to be this year. The commitment of the boys to each other and to the game each week was a pleasure to watch.

The White’s final game was a real reflection of their season, so close so many times. The passion, the tears, the effort and commitment of all of the boys that day, it was great to see. Charles has done a great job with them. The highlight of the Whites season was their win over Narraweena. Charles sponsoring the following pizza night at training to celebrate the win, was definitely a high-

UNDER 11s REPORT

(Continued from page 68) light. In fact I understand a few highlights for the Whites was Cody’s efforts in scoring tries, Declan McLerie’s try against Narraweena late in the season and a season accurate kick by Joel Chappe- low out wide for his winger to score.

And we must thank…. Thanks must go to Charles for taking on the Whites team once again this year. I know Charles loves this gig, he even said to me this year he is at a loss at what to do between seasons. Charles has his own level of passion for his team and his players, he is very protective of them and runs a tight unit. I admired his approach to coaching and he always pushed me to reflect on my own methods and strategies to achieve results with the Maroon’s players.

Our trainers do a great job each week, looking after the boys on the field and assisting with the preparation prior to each game. Bill McLerie managed to get to most games this year and made a great contribution, Luke Stapleton assisted with the Whites training during the season and one of our success stories was Ros Sault being the run on trainer for the Whites team this year. Ros is a real example of a Mum getting involved with the team and also supporting our team decision mak- ing this year. David Irwin worked the game desk each week for the White’s team, not a glamorous job but an essential role for the team each week. Craig McGregor was my trainer for nearly all of the Maroon’s games and, whilst he doesn’t realise it, was a significant help this year in offering ad- vice and providing some reflection on decisions this year. My thanks go to him and his son Angus for running the kicking tee during the year. Of course, I have to say thanks to my own boy Ben for helping with running the kicking tee as well.

Our Squad Manager Rob Wilkes has been busy behind the scenes this year and I have not thanked him enough. We ran with only one Manager this year, hence my term Squad Manager. Rob attends meetings at the Club each month on a Wednesday and represents our interests be- hind the scenes to the Club and the Junior League. We had some issues to deal with this year and I thank him for his commitment, his loyalty and frank advice throughout. Rob was very controlled sitting on the game desk for the Maroon’s each week, I cannot thank him enough for his involve- ment.

Our sponsor this year for both teams was PG Electrical. My thanks go to Paul Gander for this es- sential support of the teams and the Club and for helping out with the team behind the scenes. He assisted with manager and trainer duties and was happy to cover the BBQ and canteen duties when needed.

Lastly; my thanks to all the parents for sending your boys along each week to training and the games and having faith in myself and Charles. I must thank you for your encouragement each week, particularly after the tough games. Every little bit of encouragement helped. Whilst I would like more on field success, I see the life-long lessons the boys learn each week as a team being more beneficial in the long term. The passion and commitment I saw in all of the boys during their last game proved to me we had really succeeded this year in their development. Thank you to all the parents who assisted with BBQ and canteen duty, it really is important to help the Club run each week. I can only encourage all of you to take a role with the teams next year. There is al- ways room for more assistance in every area.

I have enjoyed coaching the boys this season and I thank all for your support. All of the boys have been a real pleasure to coach and I trust I will be in a position to coach again in 2014. Belrose is a great Club and we have a fantastic squad of players. I encourage all to keep a ball in hand over the break, enjoy some touch footy and come back ready for a massive season as U12 in 2014.

Gary Watman U11 Coach

Tim Barwell. Games: 14 Total Club Games: 79 Tries: 4 Tim returned to the Club after a season away, and what a return he had. Tim proved to be a very capable player with excellent skills. He made a difference every time he took the field. His de- fence was second to none and showed all the other players how defending should be done. Tim played most games at centre and had a go at full back and dummy half. He was particularly effec- tive late in the season, working to get his winger across the line, his progress through the season was excellent. He was man of the match several times and scored well in match points. Tim has real passion and he has far more to offer the game yet. Tim is an exciting player to watch and I look forward to seeing Tim return in 2014. He passed 75 Club games late in the season. Great season Tim, I can see you doing so well in season 2014.

Luke Brennan-Lamb. Games: 14 Total Club Games: 27 Tries: 4 Goals: 9 Luke had a great season, finishing the year particularly well. His pleasure at being named man of the match in our second last game showed how far he has come as a player. Luke played most of the year on the right wing, it wasn’t until we tried him at fullback a couple of times that he realised how much of a contribution he could make out wide. Get the ball to Luke and he knows where the line is. He really developed so well towards the end of the season each game wasn’t long enough for him; season 2014 can’t come soon enough for Luke. Luke, you had a fantastic season, you have great potential, I want to see you score a heap of tries for the Belrose U12 in 2014!

Daniel Dunn. Games: 19 Total Club Games: 125 Tries: 1 Goals: 5 Daniel was one of our utility players this season. He played at dummy half, centre and as a for- ward. He also played a number of games for our Whites team this year, and his experience really showed when he did. Daniel always was up in the face of the opposition, mostly at marker and worrying the opposition players in defence. Daniel did everything I asked this year, really working to make a contribution to the team and this is shown by the number of a club games he has played. His experience helped many times on the field and he proved to be a versatile player. Daniel, well done on a great season for 2014, I look forward to seeing you back for a great year in 2014.

Jacob Fay. Games: 14 Total Club Games: 41 Jacob played the entire season at fullback, he has made this position his own; he showed the other boys in the back line what a tough position it really is. Jacob had a great season, showing again what a fantastic defender he is. His last line of defence tackles saving many tries. He often fea- tured in man of the match points because of his commitment to defence. He was impressive under the high ball and running the ball back into the pack. His contribution to the team through his abili- ties at fullback was impressive. Jacob was focused this year at training and during the games and was a real pleasure to coach. Great year Jacob, you have the skills to make U12 in season 2014 one of your best yet.

Max Gander. Games: 18 Total Club Games: 87 Tries: 4 Max has proven to be a consistent player this year, probably the most consistent on the team. He loves his footy and is keen to play and play well each week. His defence was excellent and his commitment to his team is an example to others. Max is a natural in the middle of the field and he ran the ball well each game. His length of the field try scoring run against Narrabeen was a high-

(Continued from page 70)

light of his season and truly demonstrated his abilities. Max was a real contributor this year, he was great at training and on game days, he listened to advice and took it on the field. Max passed the milestone of 75 club games this year, he should celebrate 100 games late in the season next year. Further, he stepped up to help out the U12 twice through the year. Max, congratulations on a great season, I hope we can go better in 2014 to give you a real chance to show your skills. Great season Max.

Kye Lambert. Games: 16 Total Club Games 16 Tries: 11 Goals: 6 This was Kye’s first year in Rugby League, although you wouldn’t know it. He played most of the year at centre and is a class back line player. Kye is a team player, always looking to put his winger across the line if he couldn’t get there himself, which he did many times this year. Defence in the centre position is difficult to master, but Kye took to the position like a seasoned player. Kye is a natural sportsman, making it seem easy when it really isn’t. He made a very real difference to the team this year in every game and nearly every time he touched the ball. Kye really stood out when he helped our Whites team during the year and I believe Kye will be even better in 2014. Well done this season Kye, you were a pleasure to coach, your season with the U12 in 2014 has the potential to be huge.

Jayden Mawson. Games: 10 Total Club Games: 10 Jayden came into the Maroons team from the Whites part way through the season to be a spe- cialist dummy half. This was his first year in Rugby League but his experience in rugby really held out. His focus on giving good ball to the first receiver was obvious. He enjoyed every game and was so keen to perform well each game and every time he touched the ball. For a little chap, his tackling was awesome, often bringing down the biggest opposition forward. His running was excellent and he made the position his own. When he couldn’t play through injury, we really felt it. Jayden, you had an excellent season, I think for you it is just a stepping stone to a great year in 2014 with the Belrose U12’s!

Alex Martin. Games: 6 Total Club Games: 6 Alex came to the Club from rugby late in the season; he was keen to learn and fitted in well with the team even though he didn’t know any of the boys. He clearly has good footy skills and is a great defender. Alex ran onto the ball well and found himself one of our key forwards in our last couple of games. I think he was getting a great feel for the game at the end of the season and was always looking to off load the ball. Alex has great potential, he needs a little more experi- ence and he can make a great contribution to the game. I hope he enjoyed his games and makes it back to join us for season 2014. Well done Alex, you were very welcome late in the season, you made a great effort to become a key part of our team and learn the game quickly, come back for a huge 2014!

Joel McGregor. Games: 14 Total Club Games: 25 Tries: 2 Goals: 13 Joel was our first receiver this year and did he have a good year. His potential as a half back is massive. He loves his footy and drives his family mad chasing the game. Joel showed great consistency as our first receiver, his efforts often so consistent each week, it was expected. His passing and kicking game skills showing everyone he can go a long way in this game should he choose to do so. Joel was a pleasure to coach and such an essential part of our team. He played every game this year except one, thankfully, and showed he can make a difference to the team when he really wanted to. He managed a perfect goal kicking record with 13 from 13. Joel, you have had such a great season, with extra players on the field next year, I can see you

having an exciting season in 2014. I look forward to seeing you back next year and coaching you once again and showing us all what a great player you can be.

Dan Stovold. Games: 12 Total Club Games: 24 Tries: 6 Dan had a great season once again, he missed a few games through injury or being sick, and did we miss him. Twice he was injured during a game and could not continue. Dan played most of the year in our forward team but late in the year we started trying him at centre and I can see great potential for him in this position. Dan is a player that likes to get the ball in his hands and can run and tackle hard; when he learned to pass the ball this season, wow, he showed what a player he can be. Dan was great at training and was keen all year on an off the field, he has an excellent can do attitude and is a pleasure to coach. Dan has a real passion for football in all its forms; I hope we can keep him in Rugby League for a long time to come. Dan, well done this year, you have had a great year, come back in 2014 as I want you to form part of the U12 back- line in 2014, no one will stop us!

Ben Watkins. Games: 17 Total Club Games: 96 Tries: 13 Goals: 6 Ben has a real passion for the game; he shows it every time he plays. He was once again one of our best players in the middle this year. His level of season game points would rate around 4th amongst all players in the Maroon’s competition. Ben managed to teach me a few points about the game this year but I think I was able to teach him a few as well. He is always keen to get the ball in his hands and put other players across the line to score a try. He works so hard at his game each time he takes the field. He performed well for the U12 whites twice this year, scoring in a semi-final match. Ben took my breath away in an early game against Forestville, running on- to the ball so hard no one could stop him; such is his commitment to the team. Ben with his abili- ties was always pushing me to come up with coaching drills and methods to improve his own abilities and those of the team. Ben, you have had a great year, with a bigger team and a larger field in the U12 next year, season 2014 should be a massive year for you.

Matthew Watman. Games: 13 Total Club Games: 27 Tries: 4 Matt had a sensational year on the left wing scoring early in the season to really improve on his efforts from last year. Matt told me nearly every week how much he enjoys the game. As the Coaches son, I push him to do well. I had the great pleasure of giving him man of the match for his efforts against Harbord this season, and he deserved it with two tries, exceptional ball han- dling and great defence. Matt teamed up well with Kye as his centre and really benefited from Kye’s ability to pass the ball. Matt has made the wing position his own and is so keen to do well there. He showed great skill at times taking a difficult ball from his inside player and making the side line his friend. Matt, you have really come on in your second season, well done; your abili- ties as a winger have only just started. 2014 promises to be a big year for you and your contribu- tion to the team. You make me so proud as a Dad to be your Coach.

Sean Wilkes. Games: 13 Total Club Games: 116 Tries: 3 Goals: 1 Sean has had a big year. I admired his commitment to the team each week, often just managing to get to the game from his school rugby commitments. Sean’s explosive ability makes him un- stoppable when he wants to turn it on. Harnessing this ability is our challenge for 2014 as he has enormous potential should we be able to do this. Sean is always keen to do well, his ability in defence made a huge difference to our team most games as does his straight and hard running. His game against Mona Vale where we played short through injury for most to the game was out- standing, his defence that game was nothing short of awesome. I can see Sean really maturing in 2014, the U12 will provide the challenge he needs to really bring out the best in his game.

UNDER 11 WHITE COACH’S REPORT

2013 like 2012 brought a lot of new faces to the team with many experiencing their first year of Rugby League along with a number of boys who came through from last year. This was a chal- lenging season with so many new faces but the boys showed determination and resolve through- out the year.

Whilst making real improvements in attack, defence was our Achille’s heel. Improvements were made during 2013 but field position and getting off the mark in defence let us down. With incre- mental improvements and determination throughout 2013, hopefully we will break this issue in 2014. The main thing was the boys enjoyed their footy.

Thanks to all the parents for your support and special mention to Dave for running the Match Man- agement Duties and Bill for being the Trainer.

Finally thank you to Rob Wilkes for managing (Official Stuff) the team as well as the Maroons this year.

Declan Carlisle Games: 11 Total Club Games: 21 A good and much improved defensive year along with some good attacking football. Well done De- clan.

Joel Chappelow Games: 14 Total Club Games: 26 Tries: 4 Goals: 6 Joel took on first receiver this year, many good runs in attack and a big heart in defence. What stood out this year was Joel’s kicking game. I had at least 3 other coaches come and talk to me about the accuracy and positioning of Joel’s kicks throughout the season. Keep it up Joel.

Cody Gaughan Games: 12 Total Club Games: 24 Tries: 7 Goals: 2 Cody showed what he was made of this year with great attack and driving runs. Cody was reward- ed with several tries throughout the season, which was great to see. A real satisfying season for Cody.

Flynn Irvin Games: 15 Total Club Games: 27 Tries: 3 Goals: 1 Flynn like last year had no fear with strong running and great defence, gotta love the enthusiasm. Was determined to be a winger by name but seldom was to be found there during the game. De- fence was great this year. Great job Flynn.

Declan Mclerie Games: 14 Total Club Games: 40 Tries: 2 Goals: 1 Declan continues to improve not only in his primary role as dummy half but 2013 saw Dec step out and take the ball in attack in the later part of season. In one of our last games Dec scored a length of the field try, an apt reward for effort.

Joel Murray Games: 13 Total Club Games: 13 Tries: 1 Joel joined us this year coming from Union. Joel quickly showed his talents in both defence and attack. Whilst not being our fastest runner Joel read the play extremely well and was instrumental in coordinating the team on the field. A good season.

Luka Portelli Games: 10 Total Club Games: 36 A good repeat offender, solid in defence and like a tank in attack. Well done Luka.

Sam Rogers Games: 16 Total Club Games: 27 Goals: 1 Our marker. Sam worked tirelessly to frustrate the opposition in his defensive capacity. That was last year’s comment as well. Sam however took his role to a new level during 2013 as I would of- ten say he deserved special mention every match with 110% effort every game, an absolute pleasure

Liam Ryan Games: 13 Total Club Games: 13 Tries: 1 Liam joined the team this year, what Liam lacked in speed he made up for in pure push. Liam was incredibly hard to tackle and when motivated could break right through the oppositions de- fence. His standout game was during the semi-final vs Narraweena where his defence was awe- some, not to mention the number of piggy back rides he had on their biggest forward!!

Ryan Stapleton Games: 12 Total Club Games: 33 Ryan found some pace this year. His great attacking runs were rewarded with some tries set up for the team. Defence remains an area that requires some work but a much improved year from 2012. Well done Ryan.

Ben Strong Games: 6 Total Club Games: 6 Goals: 1 This was Ben’s first year with the team. He couldn’t make every game but he was so keen to play and be involved when he could. His commitment to do better each time he touched the ball was really noticed. Ben took on some of the bigger boys in defence and also showed he was ca- pable of running hard with the ball. I look forward seeing him at as many games as he can get to for season 2014. Good season Ben.

Ethan Watts Games: 12 Total Club Games: 12 Tries: 1 First timer, but Ethan showed not only a willingness to take on all that came in defence but solid running with the ball. Rewarded with a try towards the end of the season. Ethan is hard to wake up but once awake look out, he was an absolute stand out in his final game of the year. Good first season Ethan.

Roy Halberstat Games: 12 Total Club Games: 12 Another of our first timers. But Roy showed great commitment out on the field every time he took the ball up in attack. Defence, what commitment. His final game really showed how far he came in his first season, he came off exhausted with his efforts, but loving the game. So hope he comes back next year. Great season Roy.

Kieran Sault Games: 18 Total Club Games: 31 Tries: 3 Goals: 5 Kieran gave 110% every game. He worked extremely hard in defence and being one of our big- ger lads we needed him. This coupled with his attacking runs made Kieran one of our key players this year. Great work Kieran, a standout season.

UNDER 10 MAROON COACH’S REPORT

Let me start this year’s end of season coach’s report by again welcoming the eleven (11) new players and families to our magnificent club. Having been involved with this club for many, many year’s it is fantastic to see so many new boys playing rugby league with the Mighty Belrose Ea- gles.

Along with new players which we were lucky to have two full sides for the first time and as coach my first task was to find an assistant, I bolstered our coaching staff with two former Belrose play- ers and Club Old boys, Darren Daley who took custody of our Whites side with great vigour and experience. Andrew Smith, who brought plenty of experience and enthusiasm, helping me with the Maroons. There was a great buzz around the team with the coaching staff confident of good results and expectations of going all the way.

During the trials for the first time we graded the boys, a task not taken lightly, and this was evi- dent as all players fitted into their respective teams and positions well. For the maroons this showed in a huge way in our first game against our old foes Mona Vale at Newport with all new players buying into the team spirit and not giving up in a close loss in atrocious weather.

Throughout the season the boys became a tighter knit team on and off the paddock forging new friendships which showed both at training and game day. I am extremely proud the way our boys played the game week in, week out. They played the game in the true spirit in which it should be, this was shown at the back end of the season particularly when coming up against the top teams in our division. Our boys muscled up and showed that they can compete with the best of them and that we are firmly placed in the top four of the 1st division.

Some of the highlights during the year would include our second round clash with Mona Vale where we fought back to draw up the game 18 all, with a few more minutes on the clock would have seen us get the chocolates. Not to mention our final round clash against Beacon Hill when we led them 12-6 at the break only to be beaten by the clock again.

Finishing 3rd at the end of the regular season we were confident of playing deep into the semi’s unfortunately for us our nemesis Christian Bros knocked us out in a quality hard fought game. Having said all of this, anyone and everyone who was involved with the Maroons team this sea- son would be extremely proud of all their achievements.

To ALL the mum’s, dad’s, brother’s, sister’s and others Thank you so much for all your support throughout this season, it is greatly appreciated. Cheers

I would like to thank Andrew, Chris, Dave and Daniel for all their assistance, enthusiasm and un- bridled passion for the game during the season, on and off the field. Without your help it would have been less fun. Thank You Gents! To Darren and your merry band of helpers in the Whites, a fantastic effort this season the way the boys progressed throughout the year was awesome cul- minating in some quality football at the back end of the season. Great Job Thanks!

Finally, to the best right hand man and manager you can find anywhere. John, unfortunately we didn’t get the final result we so richly deserved. Thanks for another sensational season, your help with both teams and around the club may go unpaid but it absolutely does not go unnoticed. I sin- cerely appreciate everything you do. Thanks Mate!

MITCHELL BAMFORD

Mitch was elevated to the maroons’ team this season on the back of a good pre-season. A quite achiever but did his job up the middle especially in defence as one of our second rowers. Mitch- ell has been an integral part of the team for a number of years now and congratulations on crack- ing 50 club games. Hope to see you back next season. Games 2013 – 13 Total Club Games - 59

AXEL CANTRILL Playing in his first year Axel had a fabulous season and showed plenty of improvement as the season rolled on. Axel is a quiet kid who let his actions do the talking. Always willing in defence, it was his footwork and darting runs that gave the team great field position in attack. Axel whilst small in stature put his body on the line many a time in defence. Look forward to seeing you in 2014. Games 2013 – 15 Tries – 4 Goals – 3 Total Club Games - 15

BRANDON CARTER As tough as they come, Brandon produced another outstanding season in both attack and de- fence. Whether it be the crucial try or the must make tackle he was always there when it count- ed, Brandon never gave up and really set the standard on how to chase people down. Mr Rugby League he was always first at training practicing his goal kicking. Great season Brandon well done and see you again next year. Games 2013 – 10 Tries – 4 Goals – 3 Total Club Games - 34

MAX DOWLING On debut for the Eagles, Max slotted in perfectly. He is a damaging runner making plenty of me- ters out wide and setting up a number of tries for his team mates. A quite kid, but was always hungry for information to strengthen his game. His efforts in defence were tenacious and gave his best every week be it on game day or at training. Well done Max great season love to see you back next year. Games 2013 – 14 Tries – 2 Goals –1 Total Club Games - 14

JACOB GLASS Another first timer this year, Jacob was one of our most improved players over the course of the season. Jacob’s confidence developed with each game and at the back end of the season he was running hard at the opposition defence winning vital meters for the team. Jacob was always willing in defence. Like a number of other players in the side very quiet, but was like a sponge taking in all the skills and drills to bolster his game. Fantastic work Jake!

(Continued from page 77) ANDREW HINTZE Andrew had an outstanding season this year, making a number of brutal tackles in defence. Al- ways keen to take the ball up, Andrew was a very strong runner and with a lethal “Don’t Argue” palm would make many a line break from his own half scoring some great tries this year. Brilliant work, Andrew and looking forward to seeing you back in the Red & Gold next year. Games 2013 – 13 Tries – 6 Goals – 7 Total Club Games - 49

HUGH LARSEN

In his first season of Rugby League, Hugh played some really outstanding football. With his blis- tering pace he scored some brilliant tries, Hugh’s defence developed out of sight towards the back end of the season which denied many an opposition a try, keeping us on the front foot. Hugh was a pleasure to coach and a great addition to the team. See you next year Hugh!!

Games 2013 – 12 Tries – 2 Goals – 1 Total Club Games - 12

COOPER PHILLIPS

What a rookie year Cooper had. Thrown into dummy half in his first season his service to our first receivers was first class. Putting his body on the line week in week out Cooper cut down many an opposition runner with copy book tackles around the ankles bringing them down hard. Cooper was a pleasure to coach and a great addition to the team. Love to have you back in 2014.

Games 2013 – 14 Goals – 3 Total Club Games - 14

BJ REISP

By far and away our most improved player this season without doubt. BJ’s ‘freight train’ straight and hard running style had him picking up 10-20 meters with every run. Not to mention his brutal defence, many would be attacker knew he was tackled when he was caught by BJ. Everything BJ did this season was for his team mates not for him, a great team player. Sensational Season BJ see you in 2014.

Games 2013 – 14 Tries – 2 Total Club Games - 79

NOAH SMITH

Another great season from our veteran, Noah played a crucial role around the middle of the ruck, where he commands respect from the opposition. Noah took the ball up hard always making meters and breaking the line. His defensive efforts this year where awesome often leaving the opposition dazed, es- pecially after the implementation of the ‘Doona Manoeuvre’. But who could forget his 3 tries against Nar- raweena and brutal defence in the semi. Awesome year Noah, looking forward to seeing you in 2014.

LUKE TUCKER – Capt.

Luke definitely gave us a Captains’ knock this season. Luke reads the game like a veteran twice his age, he leads his team around the paddock setting up the plays directing his troops like a general on the field of battle. One of our main strike weapons in attack scoring 11 classy tries. Luke’s defence was freakish at times – whether it was head-on, from behind or in cover he was awesome. His technique is one of the best for his age and he rarely misses. Luke is also a great trainer who is always encourag- ing his team mates never giving up. Another great season, hope to see you back in 2014.

Games 2013 – 14 Tries – 11 Goals – 11 Total Club Games - 71

KAI WILSON

What a powerhouse year Kai had in 2013. He caused havoc whenever he took on the opposition defensive line, especially when he tucked the ball under his arm and ran up the middle of the park. Kai never takes a backward step and is in everything, steering and directing play around him. His determination in defence often lifts his team mates, with some of his classic ball and all bone crunching tackles, leaving the opposition dazed and confused. Love your work Kai looking forward to seeing you next year.

Games 2013 – 14 Tries – 7 Goals – 4 Total Club Games - 95

SAXON WOOD

Our speed machine and arguably the quickest kid running around in junior league, Saxon had another year, scoring 14 scorching tries this year with his explosive pace and the ‘no fear’ game he plays is an inspiration to all his team mates around him.

On many occasions he was our last line of defence and he didn’t let his team down chopping down many an opposition player around the bootlaces who thought they were in for a try. Con- gratulations on another great year Saxon - see you back in 2014.

UNDER 10s WHITE COACH’S REPORT

Well, it's come to the end of yet another season of the Mighty Belrose Eagles, and hasn't this year gone super-fast.

Contracted by 'Coach Wilson' this year, and hesitantly accepting, I have to admit I have had a blast coaching the Under 10 Whites this year. It certainly has been a new experience for me, I couldn't have asked for a better group of boys to coach and many thanks to Sean for the opportunity!

This year saw the Under 10 Whites have an even mixture of new blood and those more experi- enced coming back for their second, third and even many more seasons. Having half a team on debut, the season started a little slower than we would have liked, but the boys quickly developed each week and I was quite impressed with the improving skills of all players, especially those new to the game.

Although the game day results did not reflect the blood, sweat and tears that each and every mem- ber put into their games, I'm sure the boys have had just as fantastic a time as all the mums, dads, siblings, and extended Belrose families.

Highlight of the season for me was seeing the boys celebrate their first victory overcoming Narra- been, and the absolute joy on their faces as they were huddled together singing the Belrose Ea- gles winners chant. I'm sure all the parents would agree, it was pretty hard to tear them away from their team huddle and the camaraderie they displayed.

Needless to say, I was very proud of their efforts, particularly in the last few weeks of the season, and that nail biting first week of the finals, where they played so well as a team. I can honestly say the boys have always been 100% keen to play, and ready for training each week, and have been a pleasure to coach.

A big thank you to the additional assistance each week given to me by Greg, Mark and Tim – I couldn't have done it without you. Your help in coaching the kids and keeping the boys replen- ished on the field has been invaluable.

Finally, I would like to thank all the parents for their assistance in, sitting at the scoring table, help- ing out with the barbeque and canteen duties, running the lines and support in general. I would love to think we can expect all the boys back again next year and have the Under 11’s Whites be- come a force to be reckoned with!

ETHAN LEONARD

Yet another one on debut, this was Ethan's first year at rugby league and he was always very en- thusiastic and improved significantly throughout the season, playing on the wing. Starting off as one of the quieter players, his confidence grew immensely as the year progressed and he should be pleased with his great runs and tough tackling. Keep up the great work Ethan, let's go again next year. Games 2013 – 12 Total Club Games - 12

REUBEN LOWRY

Playing various positions for the Under 10 Whites throughout the year, Reuben was always keen to accept any position allocated, giving 100% to the game always. Although smaller than some, he was never afraid to hit the ball up and put his body on the line to go the extra mile. A good all- rounder, Reuben was a standout in any position. Congratulations on playing your 50th club game in the last game, hopefully plenty more to come. Well done Reuben, see you again next year! Games 2013 – 15 Total Club Games - 50

DAVID MIRABITO

A recruit from soccer this year, and also his debut season, Josh proved to be an exceptional little league player. Small in stature, but big in heart, Josh slotted into our hooker position very well early season, moving into second row towards the back end of the year, and showing what a little 'tough nut' he really is with his smashing runs and solid defence. Terrific first year mate, looking forward to seeing you play next year. Games 2013 – 11 Tries – 1 Goals – 3 Total Club Games - 11

Jamie, was also elevated to the maroons team on occasion this season, showing he would not be out of place there. A player to watch in 2014!

84 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2013

UNDER 9 REPORT

Coach: Steven Purcell

Manager: Kate McLean

It has been a wonderful year for the Under 9’s of 2013. At the completion of the 2012 season, where the squad total was nine players and we lost two of those over the break, we were con- cerned we would not be able to field a side this year. However excellent recruitment drives from within the Belrose Junior Touch Comp saw an avalanche of 12 new players join the squad, giving us a player base of 19. Not quite enough to run two teams but plenty to ensure we had a full bench of reserves each week.

It was quickly decided that with so many new players, that we would resolve to ensuring that each and every one of them had a chance to play in every position and play every week. This meant that each player would play one full half per game and occasionally get a full game. A lack of ill- ness and a desire by all the players to never miss a game, meant that the player roster very rarely got tweaked.

Each and every one of our players has grown in understanding and ability this year and I’m pleased to say that I believe we have a commitment from all to return to take up the challenge in 2014.

Enormous amounts of effort were put in by all players this year, but I feel the most rewarding expe- rience was watching how the squad took their defeats with such grace, just great kids each and every one of them.

We finished the regular season in 4th place, and deservedly that’s where we belonged, with teams 1-3 a significant step above. In saying that we fought hard for the victory in the first Elimination semi holding on in extra time for a nail biting finish. Our second Elimination semi saw a different result, going down to Harbord putting us in 4th place overall for the year. An outstanding result giv- en the quantity of new players and position rotation policy.

A great big thank-you to our team manager Kate, who is in her 2nd year as team manager and does an outstanding job supplying snakes, bandaids, player cards, nail clippers and is simply the fastest at doing shoelaces of any I’ve seen. Her assistance is invaluable and so greatly appreciat- ed. Thanks Kate

To all the Dads, who got roped in at training thanks for being tackling bags and oversized defend- ers. To Gary Watman, whose coaching skills and commitment to the team was welcomed, thanks very much and finally to Andrew Leigh and Craig McGregor for being our game day trainers and ‘magic water’ bearers, a big thank-you. I hope you will all join with me again next season.

UNDER 9 PLAYER PROFILES

Ben Watman – Jersey #1 Games 14 Tries 18 Goals 1

Rampaging Ben as he has been nicknamed, is the most experienced player on the squad and def- initely used his knowledge to show the players where the try line was, scoring 7 tries in his last game for a total of 18 for the season. Leading from the front his defense showed courage and his support and encouragement of the new players was great. A future leader.

Jack McLean – Jersey #2 Games 16 Tries 1 Goals 0

Jack is developing into a great ball runner with good hands and a whistle to whistle commit- ment. Always looking for more work when playing in the forwards, he was unfortunate not to score more tries. In his second year, Jacks skills are improving rapidly, a quiet young man, he transforms when he puts the headgear on. A player to watch next year.

Matthew Gribble – Jersey #3 Games 16 Tries 11 Goals 4

Matthew has a good eye for the game, knowing which way to move the ball and a turn of speed combined with a good step saw him score in almost every game. A talented soccer player, Mat- thew has now developed excellent ruby league ball skills. Team mates soon learnt to support him as he regularly looked to offload as the season progressed. Defensively, he held his own against larger opponents. A good reliable ‘go to’ player.

Charlie Johnston – Jersey #4 Games 16 Tries 1 Goals 7

Bulldozer Johnston, has legs that can just keep driving forward and was a natural as our red zone runner. Enjoying his first season of footy, he enthusiasm was up there with more experi- enced players. Equally committed in defense, Charlie will soon be ‘cutting them in half’ as he refines his style. A consistent goal kicker, he was able to contribute to our victories all season. He’s going to be a solid member of the squad in 2014.

Jett Flanagan – Jersey #5 Games 16 Tries 0 Goals 0

Jetpack Flanagan, who kept his speed under wraps until late in the season, left opponents in his wake as he consistently charged down the wing. A consistent defender he played any position asked of him with passion and pride. I am excited about seeing Jett run out in 2014, and take that new confidence he’s found and make his mark. Jett, doesn’t yet realise how good he’s go- ing to be.

Alex LeGeyt – Jersey #6 Games 16 Tries 2 Goals 3

Alex spent a good part of the year at first receiver, he can step, deliver the ball and kick down field. He is not frightened to mix it with the big boys tho and relished any opportunity to tuck the ball under his wing and take on the forwards. One of the experienced players of the squad, he wore his responsibilities well. A reliable goal kicker. His draw and pass will be a play to build on in 2014.

Joshua Harlow – Jersey #7 Games 16 Tries 1 Goals 0

Josh, in his first season of Rugby League was a little surprise package. Once he discovered the art of tackling correctly, he was responsible for more cheers from the crowd than almost any other player. A reliable defender on the wing, he developed as a ball runner later in the season.

86 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2013

UNDER 9 PLAYER PROFILES

Josh is capable of playing any position purely on enthusiasm. Eat up Josh, I’m expecting big things from you in 2014

Jake Loughman – Jersey #8 Games 14 Tries 2 Goals 0

Jake was another of the new starters this season and took to the skills drills well. On the field what he gave away in size, he made up for in effort. Jake played any role I asked of him but found his comfort zone in the halves or centres. I would be looking to get him more ball in 2014 as his ability to read the game continues to grow. A little pocket rocket, who will take anyone on.

Sean Simunovic – Jersey #9 Games 15 Tries 2 Goals 0

Sean played his first season of Rugby League and you could almose see him grow in confidence each and every week. One of the bigger players and a strong runner with the ball, he found himself playing in the forward roles more often than not. Defensively his tackle rate increased in the latter part of the season as he gained pride in his work rate. Sean doesn’t yet know how big he is and how many holes he can create, but he’ll get there.

Oliver Leigh – Jersey #10 Games 15 Tries 2 Goals 0

Oliver just loves his footy and it showed in every game and in every position. Enthusiasm just drips off this boy and any number of knocks throughout the season couldn’t keep him down. A try line hunter, a hard worker and quick. Whether taking on the line or defending well above his weight category, Oliver is a player coaches can depend on.

Breyton Gooden – Jersey #11 Games 16 Tries 0 Goals 0

Breyton joined with his mate Owen and together they worked hard to get the basics down early. The crossover from soccer can be daunting, but Breyton was determined not to let the team down. It wasn’t long before Breyton was tucking the ball under his wing and working hard to bust the line. When his confidence was high he would tackle anybody and I cant wait to see how he progresses next season. Great to have him onboard.

Ava Regoli – Jersey #12 Games 16 Tries 1 Goals 3

Ava playing her first season in Rugby League was determined to learn as much as she could, and quickly took the tag as the ‘most dedicated’ at all training sessions. Ava hasn’t yet realised how quick she is and when she takes on the defense next year, will definitely put more points on the board. A good pair of hands she could be trusted to take an offload and was always in the mix when solid team defense was required. A lot of work with Dad on goal kicking paid off. A rising star.

Angus McGregor – Jersey #13 Games 16 Tries 0 Goals 0

Angus, in his second year, had a headstart on the new kids and further improved his gameplay understanding. Always looking for more work, he was restless on the bench. He was solid in the forwards and quick when in the backs. He grew in confidence throughout the year and finished the season in good form. As Angus continues to focus his energies, he will be a player that de- livers next year.

(Continued from page 87)

Owen Mayer – Jersey #14 Games 16 Tries 1 Goals 0

Owen, another of our new starters this year, found the going a bit tough early on. However his progression through the basic drills, learning to catch and pass and run with the ball was great. His skills were quickly followed by confidence as he began to hold his own in tackling drills and adapt to the difference between soccer and rugby league. His season finnished strong with a try, which he had to work for and we were all very proud and pleased for him. Eat up Owen.

Daniel Marmont – Jersey #15 Games 12 Tries 0 Goals 0

Daniel is one of those all round sportsmen and regularly found his soccer and rugby league clashed. He learned the skills drills well and performed admirably on the field. Giving away sever- al inches to his team mates and the opposition, didn’t stop him from having a good crack, and like all our first year players, confidence was the key to game day performance. Keen as mustard and look forward to having him back next year.

Caleb Familton – Jersey #16 Games 12 Tries 2 Goals 1

Caleb joined us a few matches into the season, but his impact from the first game was obvious. In his first season, he learnt quickly, and as the season progressed, could be seen breaking the line, sometimes to his own surprise. Always putting in a great effort, next year will see his natural abili- ties come out and his responsibilities grow. Quicker than he realises, expect big things next sea- son.

Joshua Cooper – Jersey #17 Games 16 Tries 0 Goals 4

Joshua found himself playing in the halves for the majority of the season as his ball handling skills were exceptional. An accomplished goal kicker, he soon developed a repetoir of kicks in play. He is showing good promise in his ability to read the play and direct the team around the paddock. Equally he is comfortable hitting the ball up when given the chance. He will be back and we look forward to that.

Thomas Purcell – Jersey #18 Games 16 Tries 0 Goals 0

Thomas is in his second year at Belrose and has found his feet, his ball skills kept him in the halves most of the year as he could be relied on to retain posession, but the later part saw him have a few runs in the forwards. Always showing great courage against larger opposition, he had a good season and finished a more accomplished player than when he started. A Solid reliable player.

Thomas Martin – Jersey #19 Games 15 Tries 2 Goals 0

Thomas was a cross over from Rugby Union, and we were glad to have him. Generally used as an impact forward because he has a size advantage, he relished the role, scoring twice in the season. All would agree, he has plenty of tries in him and when he breaks the line he drags three or four with him. I look forward to getting him more involved next year.

UNDER 8 COACH’S REPORT

Hi everyone,

Here we are again at the end of another enjoyable season. Firstly on behalf of myself, Dave, Matt and players would like to thank the footy club for their help & support throughout the season partic- ularly during the Semi-Finals & Grand Final.

Personally I would like to thank my manager Dave McInerney for organising the players & parents during the week and on game day, thanks mate, hope to have you on board next year.

I would also like to thank Matt Brown for his tireless contributions to the team as trainer and more importantly as an assistant Coach. If you were picking a clubman of the year award this bloke would have to be up there, thanks mate.

Many thanks to Ian Lynch for filling in on the table, Dave Connors & Jimmy Zantitis for your assis- tance at training. We all know how hard it is juggling weekends with the kid’s sport, so thank you to all the parents for getting the kids to training, the games & for your support on game day.

This year we welcomed some new players and families to the club, it was great to see a couple of old faces back from soccer, that go’s for all the players & families returning from last year, I hope to see everyone back next year.

Well you can’t top finishing the season as the 8’s premiers, which I think was a result of a lot of hard work and effort from the boys. As Matt and I keep reminding the boys, defence wins games.

In my opinion the highlight of the season was towards the end of the year especially in the Semi’s & Grand Final your defence was fantastic with every one of the boys contributing. Great Team ef- fort!

A direct result of your great defence was some pretty exciting attacking footy. Another positive was your effort in backing up the ball runner which led to some very handy off loads. One thing to remember boys, we must spread out, don’t crowd around the dummy half.

An outstanding result from everyone, congratulations on a great year, thank you for making 2013 as a coach the most rewarding (9 seasons), to see the boys so happy after the Grand Final was a special moment for me personally. I am also very proud of the spirit in which they played each & every game.

I had a ball coaching the boys, they are a bunch of characters in different ways (some more than others).

There were some very funny moments at training, too many to mention. I really do hope all the boys back it up again next year.

Once again thank you for everyone’s help and support.

Aiden "The Pearl" Barker-Leary – U8’s was Aiden’s first season of rugby league. Aiden showed plenty of potential from the first training run. His elusive running saw him play his best match in the Grand Final. Well done Aiden and we are looking forward to seeing you next year!

Cooper “Lefty” Ballesty – We were happy to hear that Cooper was playing this year after his off season injury. He bounced back straight into his football. Practice makes perfect and this showed in Cooper’s goal kicking this season. Well done Coop!

Riley "The Kid" Barwell – Riley lead by example this season with 42 tries and too many tackles to count. His awareness of the game is very good. Whether diving on the loose ball or backing up in attack, Riley always seemed to be in the right position. His enthusiasm is infectious and Riley is a great team player. Top Effort!

Patrick “Paddy” Clyne – Patrick once again showed us he has some serious speed when he got a hold of the football. Your tackling started to improve toward the end of the season Patrick so well done. There’s plenty of potential there so can’t wait to see you next year. Good effort Patrick!

UNDER 7s REPORT

This Season started with Great Expectations (not the book) but the hope that we would get 2 teams again!

11 boys moved up from the Under 6's, which is a good number in itself but 2 teams would be bet- ter going forward. As it turned out on registration day we had a massive influx and ended up with 21 boys in total - Perfect!!

This season being "non-competitive", I split the teams into Maroon and White with an even mix of old and new kids to give both teams a chance of a "win” (which we can't say) and it worked well. Both teams had fun at training and on game days with a little rivalry growing between the two sides. This culminated in a round 13 game of Belrose Maroons v's Belrose Whites and with the anticipation growing it was like State of Origin all over! Whites came away with a great win 26-6 and I think the boys all had some FUN.

Halfway through the season it was time for the boys to take the field on their own and while I was a little unsure of how we would go; the boys soon showed me that they were more than capable of running their own game! Well done boys! Towards the end of the season we began positional play which again worked well and all the boys got a turn at dummy half, 1st receiver or runner. All in all I think this season was a successful one with a skill base growing in each boy, ready for full graded competition next season.

The season came to an end all too quickly and looking back I think every boy grew in some way and learnt a few new skills along the way, which is very satisfying as a coach, even more so see- ing them apply these skills in a game.

I had a thoroughly enjoyable year and can't wait for next season. Thanks boys and well done everyone!!

Now for the Thank You's

Firstly thank you to my wife and Manager, Jo, for helping things tick over and keeping everyone informed throughout the season, I know I can't do it without you.

Stephen Abraham took it upon himself to do the coaching course this year and as a result took on position of Assistant Coach and running the Whites side whenever needed. He is a good man and his help every week was very much appreciated - Thank you Stephen.

Still in the Abraham family Karen took on the role of scorer each week, as did Annette. This help is invaluable and very much appreciated ladies so thank you.

To all the parents who have helped with duties this season thank you - Bernie Waldon, Dave Chalk, Mark Pitkin, Ana and Trent Freeman and Tracey and Paul Clark thank you for your help at training and on game days, you have all made this season easier and more enjoyable for every- one by lightening the load!!

To all the boys THANK YOU and I hope to see you ALL again next season in the Under 8's! - I can't wait!!!

96 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2013

UNDER 6s COACH’S REPORT

U6’s Coaches Report 2013 another great Year for the Belrose Eagles Under 6’s, we had 9 new players this year out of 13 and each and every player had a fantastic season playing footy.

The kids learnt about the key elements of rugby league and what it is to play a team sport. We had many highs this year and a lot of fun on and off the field with new friendships and learning about playing as a team.

The Under 6’s is probably one of the most challenging grades to coach at times but also probably the most rewarding, the weeks when the kids finally click for the first time and have a blast in the process is truly a rewarding experience as a coach.

The core skills we worked on as a team were passing, tackling, catch and pass, evasion, playing the ball, setting a defensive line and setting up an attacking structure. The kids showed a lot of improvement as the year progressed and it was great to see all the hard work at training coming off on game day as the season progressed.

As a coach my season was very rewarding and I would not change a thing as the kids had fun each week, learnt new skills and made new friendships all through the sport we all love Rugby League.

I would also like to thank all the parents for their help throughout the year with training, field set up, bbq duty and canteen you were all fantastic, and I can’t forget my Manager and wife Rachael who made my life much easier throughout the year with her duty rosters, emails to the parents and general organisation of the Under 6 s, thanks Rach.
