MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2011 FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Premiers. That is all that needs to be said to sum up a magnificent 2011 season. Congratulations to Co-Captains Jamie Lyon and Jason King and all the players and to Des Hasler and all the coaching and support staff. Congratulations also to David Perry and the office staff at Narrabeen for all the behinds the scenes work they do that make it possible for the Football department to be successful. Congratulations and thank you also to the Board of the Sea Eagles, and our co-owners in the Sea Eagles, the Penn family and Quantum, without whom this premiership could not have been achieved. Your Club, the mighty Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles once again stamped itself as the best Rugby League Club in Australia, not only winning its second NRL Premiership in only 4 years, but by becoming the only Club to have won at least 1 Premiership in each of the last 5 decades. Such a long tradition of success is testament to the strength and character of our great Club and our relentless drive for success. Superstar players, even Immortals, have come and gone. Coaches have come and gone. Administrators and Board Members have come and gone, but what always remains is the Manly- Warringah Sea Eagles Club, something much greater than the sum of the individual parts. So we look forward to 2012, with local junior, Life Member and Club legend, Geoff Toovey leading the charge towards another milestone, the first back to back premierships since 1992-93. In 2011, Football Club membership more than doubled and for that I would like to thank each and every Manly fan who chose to make the commitment to become a part of this great Club as a Member. I would also like to thank departed CEO, Graham Lowe, for his support of Football Club Membership and for allowing it to be promoted in conjunction with the Sea Eagles’ own membership program. I would also like to thank all the staff at Manly Leagues Club, particularly Peter, Karen, Kim and Teresa, for all their hard work in administering the Football Club membership program in 2011. Thank you to fellow Director, Peter Bryant, for his tremendous commitment, not just to the Football Club, but on the Leagues Club Board as well and thank you to Co-Patron, Kerry Sibraa and Director, Philip Dean for their unceasing efforts to see Brookvale Oval upgraded into a facility befitting your Premiership team. Thanks also to Directors Bob Stevenson and Chris Jones for their work in keeping the Football Club Board in touch with the members and the ever growing band of “Travelling Supportahs” that provide magnificent support to the team at venues all over the country (and the world). A special thank you to Melinda Gainsford-Taylor for all that she has done for both the Football Club and the Sea Eagles as a Football Club appointee to the Board of the Sea Eagles over the last 3 years. With 2012 being an Olympic year, Melinda is unable to continue in her role as a Sea Eagles Director. Fortunately, Darrell Williams, a member of Manly’s 1987 premiership winning side, former Kiwi international and Football Club Member, is ready to take up the challenge. I am sure he will ably represent the interests of the Football Club and also add significant value to the Sea Eagles with his Rugby League knowledge and experience. Finally, I would like to thank outgoing Football Club Directors, Damian Smith and Cliff Lyons, for their outstanding contributions to the Football Club during their time on the Board and I welcome incoming Football Club Directors, Rory Muscat and Peter Peters. On behalf of the Board, I urge all Football Club Members to get behind Geoff Toovey and the boys as they seek to go back to back in 2012. It was our 3rd Grand Final appearance in 5 seasons and our 2nd Premiership in 4 years. With the NRL competition as close as it has ever been, our recent record is one that all involved should reflect upon with great pride. When I commenced with the Sea Eagles on the 14th of June 2011, I knew it was an extreme privilege and honour to be given the opportunity to make a positive difference to this historic and famous Club. One thing I had been told about and that stood out early for me, was the strong bond in the playing group. It was then no surprise to see that playing group come together and combine Naming Rights Sponsor their fabulous talent with the hard work and commitment necessary to deliver victory against the Warriors in the 2011 Grand Final. With the challenging economic climate and competition for the entertainment and sponsorship dollar, all NRL Clubs are facing financial challenges. 15 of the 16 NRL Clubs made financial losses in season 2011 and it is no secret that our Club was one of them. With that we have needed to review our entire business model to ensure the long-term financial stability of this great Club. We have made some important changes to our day-to-day operations and I believe we are making strong progress in reducing the Sleeve Sponsor Upper Rear of Jersey Sponsor Lower Rear of Jersey Sponsor significant losses from last year. Forecasts show the Club will go close to a break-even position at the end of 2012. Some of the key areas we are focusing on that are critical to our business plan are our membership, sponsorship and digital online programs. We need to deliver a more tailored and customer-specific service in all areas and we believe we’re headed in the right direction. Shorts Sponsor Apparel Sponsor Our Community Program is also evolving with more resources invested into our charity partners, particularly our successful Sea Eagles Reads initiative. This program won the NRL Community Program of the Year in 2011 and we are now expanding it online. This will give more remote schools an opportunity to engage with our players and provide a unique learning experience for students. During this transitional period, staff support and development, increased focus on appropriate skill sets and genuine hard work are all critical components to our long-term goals. With the passion and dedication our staff have for our Club, we believe we can 2011 SPONSORS & PARTNERS deliver the required positive financial outcomes to ensure long term success both on and off the field.
