After successful completion of intermediate studies, one has to choose for a professional degree that will define the future career of the student. Due to lack of experience, awareness and proper guidance, the students can end up choosing the wrong career. In Pakistan, there is an impression that only medical and engineering fields are worth joining, but there are a limited number of seats and not all candidates can get admission in these fields. The tradition has to be changed, as there are many important professional degrees in every field where one can achieve good reputation not only in your country but also in the world. Most of the students who cannot secure admission in medical or engineering field waste important time of their life worrying about it, instead of exploring themselves and choosing some other field of their interest for further studies. So, Intermediate Students – Be Attentive! This information will help you to decide about your future. Normally “Pre-medical” students perceive that they do not have any other degree option beside MBBS, BDS, DVM and Pharm. D. in the field of medical sciences. Even the students of “Pre-engineering” are also not aware of many important degrees and their scope. This booklet contains important information for students about the subjects they can take after their intermediate studies so it will be very beneficial for you to read this to the end. When applying for higher studies, most of the students from areas like Baluchistan do not know that every university in Pakistan has quota and scholarships reserved for them. Every department of all Universities in Punjab provides free education to one student from Baluchistan. P a g e | 3 The Career Guide… NAYS- Pakistan When applying for admission, consider the following: Always prefer public universities to private universities even if you can afford to study in a private university, as private sector can never be opted as alternative to public sector (There is exception of only few private universities). Try to get admission in the main campus of the university as most of the sub-campuses of the universities do not fulfill the criteria of Higher Education Commission (HEC). There are few exceptions as the sub-campuses of University of the Punjab Lahore and University of agriculture Faisalabad fulfill the criteria of HEC. HEC has banned sub- campuses of many universities because they lacked the suitable infrastructure and faculty. Prefer not to go for merging degree programs. Following the trend in Europe, such degrees have been introduced in Pakistan that merge more than one fields and courses but so far there is not much scope of such degrees in Pakistan. The students should prefer to go in technical fields. You should prefer your country and your province for your higher studies. Given below are the degree options in different fields of studies (Medical, Agriculture, Life Sciences, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences) and their scope in Pakistan as well as in foreign countries. Please go through them carefully and choose the professional field according to your interest and career goals. Under the leadership of HEC, the universities have assumed their new roles as producers of knowledge and research, and builders of community and economy. Improvement in the quality of academic standards and research has been the top priority of HEC. For this purpose, a multi-dimensional approach has been adopted which includes, among others, defining goals and establishing processes, training of faculty and senior management, improvement of internal performance and evaluation mechanisms, curriculum development, accreditation of programmes, and implementation of quality standards. Universities were ranked for the first time as per global standards to inculcate a spirit of competiveness and improve quality. A major target as per Education Policy 2008 is the increase in accessibility to higher education. For this purpose, in addition to establishing new universities and campuses, HEC is focusing on improving quality of distance learning students through improved monitoring mechanisms. The criteria for private universities have been enhanced to improve quality, with a simultaneous clampdown on sub-standard universities and programmes.
