TERM DATES 2019-20 Summer Newsletter 2019 Start of Autumn Term As we come to the start of my fourth year at Philips High School I would like to thank you all for your continued support. It is with great pleasure Monday 2nd Sept 19 that I would like to share and celebrate with you everything our staff and pupils have achieved and to also let you know about a number of changes Staff Training Day coming up. Uniform Friday 18th Oct 19 We will be looking forward to getting the new year off to the best possible Half Term start and as you are aware we will be rolling out the changes made to the school uniform last year to ALL pupils in September. This means that NO Fri 18th Oct - Fri 25th Oct 19 skirts should be worn at all by any girls in any years. Please see full details below:- End of Autumn Term Pupils who attend school in incorrect uniform will be sent home to Wednesday 18th Dec 19 change All Staff will check regularly for the wearing of the correct uniform by pupils. Staff Training Days When pupils are given a Non-uniform Day, the School are still expecting pupils to be dressed appropriately. Instructions for this will be given on the 19th/20th Dec & Mon 6th Jan website. 20 The following are also included in this policy, as they embody the School Start of Spring Term Rules concerning dress and appearance: Tuesday 7th Jan 20 1. Football scarves, hooded tops and hats are not to be worn to School. -

The perpetual process of adaptation that we call life leaves nothing alone, The School itself can show a long history of change as it has moulded itself to the differing needs of time, and a glance at the gaunt girders and churned mud on one side of Bridge Road show that it is as determined to be at home in the last half of this century as it has been heretofore. The modifications to the Clavian are part of this forward-looking spirit. We have set ourselves the task of providing a magazine that will above all have a unity about it. A magazine produced to appear at the end of a school term leaves much of the School year unfinished, so we have made our first aim the production of an annual Clavian that shall appear after the Speech- Day and Prize Giving ceremony, in order to record and round-off the activity of a whole year. Further, we have felt for some time that the Clavian could provide a much closer link between present and past members of the School. The merging of the Clavian and Old Clavians' Record will, it is hoped, bring news of what is going on in the School to Old Boys, and enable those still at School to feel themselves part of a larger unit than that provided by the boundaries of the School fields. We hope that this first experimental issue will be welcome to its wider circle of readers, and that its enlarged scope will compensate its regular readers for the long time they have waited for its appearance. -

Christmas Grapevine 2019
BURY CHURCH OF ENGLAND HIGH SCHOOL DECEMBER 2019 FAREWELL It is with a great degree of sadness that I find myself writing this, my final article for the Grapevine newsletter. I will be stepping down as Headteacher of Bury CE High School after seven years, having joined the school in September 2012. It has been a privilege to lead this wonderful historic school. To have been part of a community that goes back to 1748 has been an enormous joy and I have loved it. The Governors will determine who the new Head will be to take on the reins and lead the school forward in the next stage of its development. I want to say thank you to all who have supported the school during my period as Headteacher. To parents and carers, I would say a big thank you for entrusting your children into our care. I have had the joy of seeing your children turn into amazing young men and women of whom we, and you, can be immensely proud. To those who have been friends of the school, I would thank you for your support over the years. Your help has enabled us to achieve vastly more than we could have ever imagined. Whether it has been clergy giving up their time to come in and lead services, or Alumni giving generously to support prizes and fund-raising activities, or the community coming together to remember those who are no longer with us at remembrance events, it has all added to the achievements of this school. -
School Bus Services in the Rochdale Area
School Bus Services in Bury September 2019 to July 2020 Services in this leaflet operate on schooldays only, unless otherwise stated. Although provided primarily for school students, members of the public may use these services. Services are listed alphabetically under school names. An introduction to School buses and concessionary fares for students in Greater Manchester Passengers can pay a fare to the driver for each journey shown on this timetable. However, students will need to show an IGO pass to travel at the concessionary (reduced) fare. If students do not have an IGO pass, they will have to pay a higher fare. Most of the journeys shown in this timetable are funded by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM). The majority of TfGM funded services charge a standard fare and also offer daily return tickets. In some cases, the return ticket can also be used for travel on other journeys which serve similar areas – even if it is provided by a different operator. On most services, students can also buy a weekly scholar’s ticket, which costs £7.40 These are ONLY valid on schooldays on school buses and are available from the bus driver on all services where they are applicable. To help the driver, please try to have the correct fare when buying your ticket. An exploration of the viability of partnership between dar al-ulum and Higher Education Institutions in North West England focusing upon pedagogy and relevance Final Report Ron Geaves, Liverpool Hope University Introduction and Background Religious education in faith schools has been subject of contestation for several decades and is arguably most acutely experienced in the Muslim faith school sector. The debates are framed within ongoing and continuous educational theorization of the role of religious education in the school curriculum; the role of faith schools and in the case of Muslim faith schools, political concerns over integration. Muslim faith schools were likely to find themselves at the forefront of government identification of schools ‘as a tool for tackling extremist opinion and ideology’ in the 2008 Prevent Strategy, whose primary focus was the prevention of militant Islamic terrorism.1 In the case of the Deobandi dar al-ulum (Muslim seminary),2 a sector with approximately thirty institutions in Britain, primarily concerned with delivering a seventeenth century religious curriculum formulated in India, known as the Dars-i Nizami,3 these debates become focused around relevance with regard to both pedagogical styles of delivery and the content of the curriculum. Although the project that provided the field research for this article was primarily concerned with the practical obstacles that might stand in the way of possible partnerships between the dar al-ulum and HE/FE sector institutions with regard to the accreditation of the final two years of the curriculum (post ‘A’ Level), it was able throw light on the concerns with regard to relevance and pedagogy. -

Bury Church of England High School Sponsored by: BUTCHER & BARLOW, Solicitors & Notaries MAY 2016 HEADTEACHER’S REFLECTION At this time of year, we are all looking forward to the return of the sun as we move into the summer months. The school is settling down to the annual routine of GCSE examinations, having commissioned our Year 11 pupils at Bury Parish Church on Thursday 12 May. The day was a very enjoyable time with a „This is your life at Bury CE High School‟ assembly followed by a special commissioning meal in the suitably decorated School Hall. The pupils reflected on who was most likely to go on to various achievements such as Prime Minister before getting ready to move up to Bury Parish church for their commissioning service. The service was led by the Bury Parish Church School Chaplain, Rev Rhiannon Jones, and the Rector presided at communion. We welcomed many parents, grand-parents and friends of the school to join us at the service. After the event, I received a letter from one of the departing Year 11 pupils who wrote “After the excellent and emotional commissioning service yesterday, I felt obliged to write this letter of thanks to you and your incredible team of staff for the brilliant experience I have had at our exemplary school.” Quite a compliment from someone who knows what the school really has to offer. One of the things that is distinctive about Bury CE High School is its commitment to learning in a world context. We believe in the Global Dimension to learning and seek to set our learning in an international context. -

This is an important time for parents and children and we want to help as much as we can. This booklet contains a lot of information which I hope will help you make your application and, whenever possible, avoid disappointment. It is important you take the time to read all the information carefully before you apply, even if you have already decided which schools you prefer. We will try to give you your preferred school, but schools have a limited number of places. If we receive more applications than places, we use our admission criteria to decide who will get a place. The admission numbers and admission criteria for Wigan schools are given in this booklet. Our website at www.wigan.gov.uk has a link to school admissions and other useful sites. You can use this site to apply for a secondary school place on-line. There are more details about this in the booklet. Each school also produces its own prospectus which contains a lot of information about that school. It is useful to visit schools before you apply, and most schools will be holding open days or evenings in September or October 2009. If you cannot go to these or want any information about individual schools, please contact the headteacher at that school, who will be pleased to help.
