Canton) January 1983 Searsy Comes to Parishville Center by Rosabel Parker Meashaw With the arrival of mail order catalogues in the late nineteenth century, life for many rural people. including those in St. Lawrence County, would never be quite the same. The vast array of products available with such convenience would end some of the isolation that such people had always before taken for granted. Great stores like Montgomery Ward and Sears Roebuck could and would sell almost anything, including houses and automobiles. Here is the account of one family's excitement over the arrival of their first Motor Wagon, in a large crate, in 1913. At all social gatherings I was always "Who? Oh, the quiet one," but I did have one opening line I could use-"My father bought his first car from Sears, Roebuck & Co!" But then, no one believed me. Conversation languished. But Papa did buy his first car, mail- order, from Sears, Roebuck & Co.! Why not? Practically everything that con- tributed to our well being came from there, F.O.B. and guaranteed: station- ary engines, milk separators, house fur- nishings, family clothing, groceries even. Large flakes of raisins on the stem, halves of salt codfish, hundred pound bags of sugar, and five pound cans of coffee beans. If we needed it, S.R.& Co. had it ready to ship. So out goes an order in early spring 1913 for one Motor Wagon, purchase price $495.00 (no tax) and a later entry on Papa's accounts dated March 13,1913- "by freight one auto, $28.13."     CHAIRMEN OF SENATE STANDING COMMITTEES [Table 5-3] 1789–present INTRODUCTION The following is a list of chairmen of all standing Senate committees, as well as the chairmen of select and joint committees that were precursors to Senate committees. (Other special and select committees of the twentieth century appear in Table 5-4.) Current standing committees are highlighted in yellow. The names of chairmen were taken from the Congressional Directory from 1816–1991. Four standing committees were founded before 1816. They were the Joint Committee on ENROLLED BILLS (established 1789), the joint Committee on the LIBRARY (established 1806), the Committee to AUDIT AND CONTROL THE CONTINGENT EXPENSES OF THE SENATE (established 1807), and the Committee on ENGROSSED BILLS (established 1810). The names of the chairmen of these committees for the years before 1816 were taken from the Annals of Congress. This list also enumerates the dates of establishment and termination of each committee. These dates were taken from Walter Stubbs, Congressional Committees, 1789–1982: A Checklist (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1985). There were eleven committees for which the dates of existence listed in Congressional Committees, 1789–1982 did not match the dates the committees were listed in the Congressional Directory. The committees are: ENGROSSED BILLS, ENROLLED BILLS, EXAMINE THE SEVERAL BRANCHES OF THE CIVIL SERVICE, Joint Committee on the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, LIBRARY, PENSIONS, PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS, RETRENCHMENT, REVOLUTIONARY CLAIMS, ROADS AND CANALS, and the Select Committee to Revise the RULES of the Senate. For these committees, the dates are listed according to Congressional Committees, 1789– 1982, with a note next to the dates detailing the discrepancy.

Schiller Brown University Before the 17th Amendment went into effect in 1914, the election of United States senators by state legislatures was one of the most prominent features of American national politics. As important as these elections were, there has been surprisingly little direct analysis of U.S. Senate elections before direct election. George Haynes’s 1906 Progressive Era monograph is now a century old. Riker’s classic 1955 article on the role of the Senate in American federalism is nearly half a century old and, in any case, delved very little into the direct evidence of how Senate elections were conducted. The past decade has seen a number of articles examine the consequences of switching from state legislative election to direct election of senators in the 1910s, but the pre-17th Amendment politics in those paper is taken as given, not the focus of analysis (Stewart 1992a, 1992b; King and Ellis 1996; Hibbing and Brandes Crook 1997; Wirls 1998). This paper is part of a larger project that seeks to remedy our lack of accurate understanding about Senate elections before 1913.
