FOREWORD

The compilation and publication of this, the third edition of the Kernan Genealogy* derived its impetus from Frank Kernan's wedding in Camden, South Carolina, to Katherine Sheffield, for that delightful occasion brought home to those of us who gathered there that we had indeed become a scattered family where many members are quite unknown to others and are not in fact any longer "Utica" Kernans.

The publication enables me to introduce Bryan Kernan, Gentleman, quite definitely as an ancestor, a fact that was considered to be only "quite probable" when the second edition was published in 1949. This results from 1954 researches in coupled with the uncovering by Neva Hecker of an 18 53 letter from a Dublin cousin to a member of the family in New York. It also enables authoritative display of the coat of arms that has been recognized by the Chief Herald of Ireland as rightfully belonging to the descendants of William Kernan and hence, subject to proper heraldic rule, to the Utica Kernans.

Following a suggestion of the Chief Herald, I chose the canting motto COR NON CAPUT REGAT that may be freely translated "Have a Heart!" However, the motto is a personal matter and each one is free to chose his own. As a universal family motto, we might all agree on MAC TIGEARNAfN GO BUAIG, which is corrupted into "Mac Kernan Aboo!" and translated into "Kernan to Victory!"

On behalf of all the family, I thank Isabel Lewis Crowder, Warnick Joseph Kernan, Francis Kernan Kernan, Clifford Lewis 3rd, Jesse Slingluff, Walter Avery Kernan, Walter Newberry Kernan and Philip Avery Kernan, whose donations and financial help made possible the publication and modest price of this book.

*There is a 1942 typewritten edition, copy of which is in the New York Public Library in New York and in the New York State Library at Albany. It contains some information that is not in either of the later ones.

EXPLANATION OF THE NUMBERING SYSTEM

The Kernan member of each family unit is given a double number, the first digit of which identifies his generation from Bryan Kernan; the second identifies him within his own generation. The double number to the right is the number of his Kernan parent. All spouses, their parents, unmarried children and married children with no descendants will be found grouped with their Kernan spouse or parent. Married children who have descendants will be found once with their parents and a second time with others of their generation as heads of their own families, with their own spouses, in-laws and children. This system makes every Kernan descendant appear to be the head of his family unit. It may result in some inaccuracies but I will leave it to others to make any necessary corrections. There are two exceptions to the double listings: Bryan's children and grand children are all listed, married or not and children or not, and so are newly married members of the later generations who may become heads of their own family units. "Married Maidens" are listed and indexed only under their maiden names.

BRYAN KERNAN

and

MdC TIGE.dRNdfN of the BREFNY

The first identifiable Kernan ancestor of the Utica Kernans is Bryan Kernan, Gentleman, of Ned, in the Parish of Killeshandra, Barony of Tullyhunco, County of Cavan, Province of Ulster and . Deducing from the leases referred to hereinafter that Bryan's oldest son, John, was of age by 1763, Bryan must have been born by the early 172o's-possibly at Ned but surely at some place in the County of Cavan. Inasmuch as it is recorded that John's wife, nee Jane Brady, was over seventy in 1809 or 1810, the dates for Bryan should probably be given as: Born 1710-1715; married 1730-1735; died 1766. Bryan Kernan was a scion of the Ulster family Mac Tigearnafn of the Brefny (1). This name, corrupted, as the Irish say, into Mac or Mc Tiernan, - Teman, - Kiernan, - Kernan, - Kearnan, often without Mac or Mc, and anglicized into Masterson, derives from Tigearnain, the name of one of its mediaeval chieftains. Tigearnafn in turn derives from tigearna, meaning "lord" or "master (hence Master son), plus the diminutive "fn" (2). The seat of the family for many hundreds of years, Cruacan rhic Tigearnain (3), is the place where the O'Rourke was inaugurated Prince of the Brefny. Now called "Croaghan", it lies six furlongs northerly of the village of Killeshandra and but three or four miles from Ned. Sometime before 1622, the family had lost owner ship of this property, probably supplanted by Scotsmen in James the First's Planta tion of Ulster. But, nonetheless, at the time of his death in that year, the Mac Kernan, (i.e. the head of the clan) who was called "Brien bane"-Blond Brien was still in possession by demise from James Craig who had been granted it by James Auchmuty (4). By 1641, however, the family had even lost possession, for, in that year, John mac Kernan (sic) was one of the gentlemen who led the rebels in a siege of Croaghan then occupied by Sir James Hamilton (5). The stories of its loss in the intervening years were referred to in 1836 as having "not even a sem blance of probability" and were left unrecorded. See Second Edition at page 7. The Mac Tigearnafn arms are blazoned thus (6): Arms-Ermine, two lions passan t gules. Crest-A griffin statant gules, wings erect vert. Motto-Serviendo guberno 2 THE UTICA KERNANS

These armorial bearings were confirmed, with a difference to distinguish them as those of the American branch of the family, to the descendants of William Kernan, Bryan's grandson, in a document prepared by the Chief Herald of Ireland and dated May 1, 1954. The arms as confirmed are blazoned thus: Arms-Ermine, two lions passant gules, on a chief of the last three mullets argent. Crest-A griffin statant gules, wings erect vert, the dexter claw resting on a mullet argent. Motto---Cor non caput regat. There are at least three pedigrees tracing the descent of the family from Adam and Eve to the early sixteenth century. Differing one from the other in small particulars, they may be found in Ms. No. 146, Linea Antiqua, vol. II, at page 41, in the Genealogical Office of Dublin Castle (7); in Letters containing information relative to the antiquities of the Counties of Cavan and Leitrim (Breifny) Collected during the progress of the Ordnance Survery in £836, reproduced under the direction of Reverend M. O'Flanagan, Bray, 1929; and in Irish Pedigrees or the Origin and Stem of the Irish Nation, O'Hart, Dublin, 1881. Parts of all three pedigrees are printed in the earlier editions of this genealogy. There are also printed there excerpts from the Annals of Ulster and the Annals of the Four Masters recording exploits of the family from the thirteenth into the late sixteenth century-one hundred and twenty-five years before Bryan Kernan was born. It is written, for instance, in the Annals of Ulster, of "Brian, son of Matthew Mac Tigearnafn, chieftain of Tellac Duncada (8), the most famous man of the Breifnians" who died in 1365: Brian Mac Tigearnafn of the Conflicts- Wi th his hospitality comparison was not just. He followed generosity without hatred; Heaven was the end of his battle career. As noted in the Annals of the Four Masters, he was designated thus by O'Dugan, historian of the O'Kellys: Mac Tigearnafn, the valiant man, The true protector of warlike chieftains, The patron of clerics and their friend, Rules over the powerful Tullyhunco. In 1936 among people living near Ned, there were still memories of a Brian Roe - Red Bryan - as the aristocrat of the clan with a great horse who had lived a hundred or more years before. In the heroic tradition of the Annals, could this possibly be our Bryan Kernan, Gentleman, of Ned? Our knowledge of Bryan Kernan and his immediate descendants comes from three memorials, i.e., summaries, made for record purposes of three documents dated 1747, 1763 and 1772; from three wills dated 1763, 1795, and 1795; and from a letter dated Dublin, November 10, I 8 53, addressed by Christopher Eustace, Bryan's great grandson, to John Mc Keon, another great grandson, in New York. Bryan Kernan and Mac tigearnain of the Brefny 3

The earliest memorial is of a lease dated June 20, 1747, from Martin Arm strong, Esq., of , to Bryan Kiernan (sic) of Ned, , Gentleman. As document No. 86,581, Book 127, page 227, it is still to be seen in the Registry of Deeds, Henrietta Street, Dublin, Ireland, and reads as follows: A Memorial of an Indented Deed of Lease bearing Date the Twentyeth Day of June One thousand seven hundred and Forty seven Made Between Martin Armstrong of Drumlivan in the County of Leitrim Esq. of the one part and Bryan Kiernan of Ned in the county of Cavan Gent of the other part Whereby the said Martin Armstrong Demised unto the said Bryan Kiernan All that and those the Town and Lands of Ned and Cornagree (9) scituate in the Parish of Killeshandra and County of Cavan with the appurtenances To Have and to hold the said Lands and premises with their appurtenances unto the said Bryan Keirnan (sic) his Heirs and assigns from the first day of May then last past for and during the Term of Thirty one years (10) At the yearly rent of Twenty six pounds ster by one Equal half yearly Portion on the first Day of November and first day of May over and above All Taxes Quitt and Crown Rent only Excepted with a clause of Distress and Reentry with other usual Clauses and Covenants The Witnesses to the Said Lease are Humphry Galbraith of Carrygallen in the County of Leitrim Esquire and Hugh Conolly of Carrygallen & County of Leitrim aforesaid Gent-and this Memorial was perfected by the Said Bryan Kiernan in the presence of the said Humphrey Galbraith and of George Nicolls of Lossett in the County of Cavan Gent Signed and sealed in the Bryan Kernan (seal) Presence of Humphrey Galbraith The Above named Humphrey Galbraith maketh Oath George Nicolls that he was present and saw the Deed of which the above Writing is A Memorial duly perfected by the partys thereto and that he also was present and saw the above named Bryan Kiernan Duly Sign and Seal the Above Memorial and Deposeth that the same Humphry Galbraith subscribed as a Witness to the Said Deed and Memorial in this Depots proper hand writing Sworn before me at Carrick in the County of Leitrim in my circuit this Second Day of September 1747 Robt ------(illegible) The second memorial is of a similar lease dated May 24, 1763, running from Andrew Armstrong, of Ballenard, King's County, Esq., to Bryan Kiernan and Jon. Kiernan of the County of Cavan. It leases to them for thirty-one years (10) the lands of Ned and Cornacleagh (sic) "by Estimation one hundred Eighty acres or thereabouts". One of the witnesses was Francis Kiernan of Dublin, Merchant. The memorial is numbered 146,668, Book 224, page 424. Memorial of the 1747 Lease of Ned Memorial of the 1763 Lease of Ned 6 THE UTICA KERNANS

The third memorial is of a deed poll dated November 30, 1772, whereby Jno Keirnan (sic) of Nedd (sic) granted to ffrancis Keirnan of Dublin the lands of Ned and Cornakee (sic) for the remainder of a lease made to John Keirnan and Bryan, his ffather. One of the witnesses was Thomas Magan, Gentleman. The memorial is numbered 193,887, Book 294, page 382. The wills are those of Bryan Mc Kiernan (sic) of Ned, County Cavan, of Francis Kiernan (sic) of Dublin, merchant, and of Elizabeth Kiernan. The will of Bryan Mc Kiernan is dated August 5, 1763, and was proved July 15, 1766. The original is no longer in existence but the record of it in the Genealogi cal Office, Ms. No. 239, page 136, shows that Bryan's wife was named Mary, that he had three sons, John, Thomas, and Francis, and two daughters, one the wife of Bartholomew Taylor, and one named Elizabeth. The second will, that of Francis Kiernan, was dated August 27, 1795, and proved September 30, 1795. The record of it in the Genealogical Office shows only that his wife was named Elizabeth. The third will, that of Elizabeth, was dated September 14, 1795, and proved June 10, 1797. Its record shows that she left three grandchildren, Francis, Elizabeth and Mary Magan. The letter which ties the various Kernans, Kiernans, and McKiernans to our family is dated November 10, 1853, and was addressed to "The Rigt Honble John McKeon New York", by Christopher Eustace (II). It reads as follows: Bone st Distillery Dublin Nov~ 10:h 1853 My Dear Sir Your Kindness will excuse the Ii berty, particular! y, it being from a relative and old friend of your Aunt Miss Jane Kernan of the Co Longford my Mother Ellen Field being niece of her Father's. You have heard I daresay ere this, of the death of Miss Eliza Magan of this City, Grandaughter of your Grand Uncle Fra" of Tho" St in this City. She made her Will a day or so before her death leaving £ 16,000 (12) to three Gentlemen namely John Richd Cor ballis, Doer' Fitzpatrick & the Revd Dr Taylor, third cousins of the De ceased. we have every reason to think she was not in a State of mind to make a Will & I beg to call your particular attention to it, your Aunt being the next akin. Rob~ Delahoyde Richd Delahoyde Marg~ Delahoyde & your humble servant the subscriber will render you all the assistance in our power & re collect we are as nearly related as the three Gentlemen named in the Will a Co Longford friend of mine called on me a few days back to say your Aunt was very unwell, your Grandfather & me were on the most intimate terms of Friendship & Kindness having spent many of my juvenile days in Ballyholavan with my cousin J a" McKiernan and your grandant Mrs McKiernan our opinion is if you look after this will case you will upset it which is our sincere wish hoping to have a line from you in course am very sincerely Yours Christopher Eustace Bryan Kernan and Mac Tigearnal'.n of the Brefny 7

Nothing more is known of this intriguing story at the present time. It should be noted that these do cum en ts and letter are very flexible in the spelling of the name Kernan and the use of "Mc." However, this very flexibility supports the conclusion that Bryan Kernan, Kiernan, Keirnan, and Mc Kiernan are one and the same man and our ancestor; that John Kernan, Kiernan, and Keirnan are one and the same and also our ancestor; and that Francis Kiernan, merchant of Dublin, was the uncle of our immigrant ancestor William Kernan. To provide some background and understanding of the crushing difficulties that Bryan Kernan, as a Roman Catholic in early and middle Penal Times in Ireland, must have faced merely to live and raise a family, to say nothing of main taining a status worthy to be called "gentleman," three scholarly books will be found helpful: Edward Mac Lysaght- Irish Life in the Seventeenth Century. Second Edition, revised and enlarged, Cork, 1950. Constantia Maxwell - Dublin under the Georges, I7I4-I830. London, 1936. - Country and Town in Ireland under the Georges. Lon don, 1940.

NOTES ( r) Edward Mac Lysaght-Irish Families, their names, arms and origins. Dublin, 1957· -More Irish Families. Galway, 1960. John Rooney-Genealogical History of Irish Families, with their Crests and Armorial Bearings. New York, 1896. Both writers hold that United States Senator Francis Kernan (3-2) was a scion of the Mac Kernans of the Brefny. (2) There are Mac Kernan, etc., families whose names have other derivations and who are not related to the Mac Kernans of the Brefny. One, for instance, from Ciarnan, is also corrupted into Mac Kiernan. (3) "Cruacan mic Tigearnafn" means "Mac Kernan's Round Hill." (4) See Inquisition Post Mortem County Cavan. This is summarized in a report made by the Genealogical Office in June, 1949, that has been deposited in Room 308, New York Public Library with material that is indexed as "Un catalogued Material on the Kernan Family." (5) See A Remonstrance of the beginnings and proceedings in the Rebellion in t!Je County of Cavan-October 23, I6p-June I5, I642, by Henry Jones, D.D., London 1642. A copy is in the Newberry Library, Chicago, Case F423.456, and it is reprinted in A Contemporary History of Affairs in Irelandfrom I64I to I652, ed. by John T. Gilbert, Dublin, 1879, Vol. I, Part II. (6) Mac Lysaght, op. cit. (7) This is the present name of the Office of the Ulster King at Arms that was founded in 1522. Its primary duties-to control the use of arms-require it to be familiar with genealogical matters, since the right to bear arms, where not granted by the proper authority, depends on descent from an armigerous ancestor. (8) "Tellac Duncada," meaning "the Territory of Donogh," is corrupted into "Tullyhunco." Donogh was a chief of the Clan in the Early Middle Ages. (9) "Ned," meaning "nest," lies about four miles west by north of the village of Killeshandra, which, in turn, is west by north of the town of Cavan. I find no townland named "Cornagree" or "Cornakee," but there is a "Corn aclea" on the modern Ordnance Survey map that lies a mile north of Kille shandra and northeast of Shan Croaghan, (i.e., Old Croaghan), and meets the townland of Croaghan at its, Croaghan's, easternmost point. Possibly this is the other part of Bryan Kernan's leasehold. But there is also a "Corna cleigh," not nearby but still in County Cavan, and there is a "Cornagee," meaning "Hill (or Round Hill) of the Wind," that lies in the Parish of Crosser lagh and Barony of Castlerahan. The Survey Office suggests that "Corna kee" might be a misreading of "Cornasker," a townland that adjoins Ned on Bryan Kernan and Mac Tigearnain of the Brefny 9

the north. "Cornasker" might mean "Round Hill of the Gravel Ridge." This information as to the meaning of the Gaelic names derives from cor respondence with the Survey Office and from Joyce-Irish Place Names and their Origins, 3rd Edition, Dublin, 1871. (10) This was the maximum period for which the 1690 allowed Roman Catholics to rent land. They were, of course, forbidden to inherit it unless they became Protestants, or to buy or own it. (n) This honorific was used because John McKeon was New York District Attorney.

( 12) The purchasing power of sixteen thousand pounds sterling in I 8 53 is roughly equal to that of three hundred eighty-four thousand dollars in 1968.

FIRST GENERATION

1-1 JOHN KERNAN Born 1731-1735, possibly at Ned, County Cavan, Ireland. Died before I 804, the year in which his widow followed their son William to New York with five children. Married Jane Brady in about 1760. Born about 1738, if over seventy in 18IO, as her daughter Alice, who was not always quite accurate, wrote. Died March, 1832, at New York, New York. She is believed to have come from either Killeshandra, or Drumshan bo, County Lei trim. According to family tradition, John is buried at Thornhill near Longford. It is perhaps more probably the Thornhill in the northwest part of County Cavan that is "Mulladreenagh" in Irish, since there is no Thornhill near Longford. Children: 2-l Michael 2-6 Vl Bernard 2-2 11 Mary 2-7 Vil Elizabeth 2-3 111 Jane 2-8 V111 William 2-4 lV Winifred 2-9 lX Francis 2-5 V Margaret 2-IO X Alice.

1-2 THOMAS KERNAN Died after 1763, in which year he was mentioned in his father's will. Possibly he was the father or grandfather of the James McKiernan of Ballyholavan referred to by Christopher Eustace as his cousin.

1-3 FRANCIS KERNAN Born before 1742. Died between August 27 and September 30, 1795, at Dublin, Ireland. Married Elizabeth __. Died between September 14, 1795, a11d June IO, 1797, probably at Dublin, Ireland. Children: 2-II i A daughter.

1-5 ELIZABETH KERNAN Died after 1763, in which year she was mentioned in her father's will. Married __ Field. Children (Field) : 2-15 i Ellen SECOND GENERATION

2-l MICHAEL KERNAN 1-1 Died after 1845 and before 1853, probably in , Ireland, near Edgeworthstown. Michael Kernan was "college educated," in the sense of "good school," and declined to work for more than three months after the financial ruin following the Rebellion of 1798, preferring, he is recorded to have said, to die as the gentleman he was born. He is not listed as living at Ned in the census of 1841, and is described as of the County of Longford in the citation issued in 1845, in the New York probate proceeding for the will of his sister Eliza beth.

2-2 MARY KERNAN I-1 Died after 1821 and probably before 1834, in Ireland. Mary Kernan was left a legacy in the will of her brother Francis made in 1821, and is described as of Ireland in the New York proceedings for its probate. She is not mentioned in the will of her sister Winifred made in 1834, nor in that of her sister Elizabeth made in 1844. She is said to have died young.

2-3 JANE KERNAN l-l Died after 18 53, probably in County Longford near Edgeworthstown. Jane Kernan is described as "now of Ireland" in the 1821 proceedings for the probate of the will of her brother Francis, and as of the County of Longford in those for the will of her sister Elizabeth in 1845, and in the Eustace letter of 1853.

2-4 WINIFRED KERNAN 1-1 Born about 1769, in Ireland. Died February, 1834, at Brooklyn, New York. Married Roger Muluey after 1820, probably in New York. Died before 1834. In the will of her brother Francis, which is dated July 20, 1820, Winifred is named without her married name, though the others known to have been married at that time are given their married names; in her own will dated January 6, 1834, she describes herself as "widow." According to the burial records of Saint Patrick's Cathedral, she died at the age of 65 at Orange Street (which is in Brooklyn) and was buried on February 25, 1834. Her will is recorded at Liber 71, Page 346, in the records of the Surrogate's Court, New York County. 14 THE UTICA KERNANS

"Rogers Molvey" was one of the witnesses to the marriage of Lackey Reynolds and "Ally" Kernan at Saint Peter's Church, Barclay Street, on November 26, 1812.

2-5 MARGARET KERNAN 1-1 Born about 1771, at Ned, County Cavan, Ireland. Died August 24, 1863, at New York, New York. Married James Mc Kean in about 1805. Born 1781, in County Leitrim, Ireland. Died March 29, 1823, at New York, New York. The monument to this lady in the churchyard of Old Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Mulberry Street, New York, is inscribed thus: In Memory of Margaret Kernan, Wife of Captain James Mc Kean. Born in Ned, County Cavan, Ireland. Died in New York City August 24, 1863 Aged 92. A long life of devotion to her family and duty as a Christian is her eulogy. Children (Mc Kean): Mary Ann Born June 11, 1806, at Albany, New York. Died November 20, 1852, at New York, New York. Married Alfred Colvill on November 19, 1831, at New York, New York. Died December 6, l 878, at New York, New York. He mar ried (2) Caroline Weld Stevens and had a daughter Susan. The known details of the descendants of this lady, Colvills, Cambrelengs, and Purtons, will be found in the earlier editions of this book. None are known to be living at the present time. The tragic story of the mysterious and unsolved disappearance of her son John Colvill will be found in I25 New York Law Reports at page 610. u John Born March 29, 1808, at Albany, New York. Died November 22, 1883, at New York, New York. Married Jeannette Elizabeth Sloat on May 24, 1854, at New York, New York. Daughter of Admiral John Drake and Abby (Gordon) Sloat. Born September 19, r82r. Died December ro, 1889, at New York, New York. She had married (1) James Bayard Whitte more and had a son, James Bayard, and a daughter, Jeannette Sloat. The only living descendants of John Mc Kean are his grand daughter Neva Valentine Hecker (Mrs. Francis Xavier Sadlier, of New York, New York), three great granddaughters, Neva Eliza beth Bicknell Hecker, of Rome, Italy, Margaret Sloat Hecker (Mrs. Alfred Savi! Olmsted), and Jeannette Marie Hecker (Mrs. Vincent Leroy Toomey, of Washington, D. C.) and four children of the latter. As descendants through their mother, Fanny Con- SECOND GENERATION 15

stable Bicknell (Mrs. John Mc Keon Hecker, of Beverly Hills, California), of the Pierrepont Family of Connecticut, the vital statistics of Neva, Margaret and Jeanette and the Toomey chil dren are to be found in The Pierreponts, I802-I962, by Abbott Low Moffat. John Mc Keon's descendants are recorded in the earlier edi tions of this genealogy. 111 James W. Born in 1812. Died January 6, 1842, at New York. 1v Francis Born in 1814. Died April 5, 1871. 2-6 BERNARD KERNAN 1-1 Born about 1772. Died in 1799, in India. According to Aunt Alice Kernan, Bernard Kernan entered the British Army as a captain and received a wound in the knee at the siege of Seringa patan, India, that cost him his life at the age of twenty-seven. That siege was in May, 1799. However, in the records at the National Army Museum, R. M. A. S., Camberley, Surrey, England, the name Bernard Kernan appears first in the Army List as a Lieutenant in the 74th Foot, with 23 September, 1803, as his date of seniority, and disappears from that List in 1807. The regimental history records that an Ensign Kearnan (sic) was present with that regiment at the Battle of Assaye, India, on 23 September, 1803, and was wounded. The supposition of the Museum is that, inasmuch as there were many casualties in that battle, Ensign Kearnan obtained his promotion into "dead men's shoes." One more recordable fact is that the name "B. Kernan" is listed among the captains on a tablet on the north wall of Saint Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland, dedicated to the "memory of the officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the 74th Highlanders who were killed or mortally wounded in various actions in which the Regiment was engaged in India, 1789-1805." These inconsistencies cannot be resolved at the present time.

2-7 ELIZABETH KERNAN 1-1 Born about 1779. Died February, 1845, at New York. According to the burial records of the Trustees of Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Elizabeth died at the age of 6 5 at Ridge Street and was buried on March 1, 1845. This was probably the same house in which her mother had died, since it is on the corner of Ridge and Rivington Streets. Her will recorded at Liber 90, page 526, in the records of the Surrogate's Court, New York County, reads as follows: 16 THE UTICA KERNANS

3-6 vm William 3-7 IX Michael John In A Sketch of the Life of General William Kernan, his daughter Alice wrote that Ned was two miles from Edgeworthstown. However, Edge-· worthstown is in County Longford, some twenty miles from Ned in County Cavan where Willi?m Kernan wrote in his bible that he was born. A possible explanation is that those members of the family who remained in Ireland moved to County Longford near to Edgeworths town and called their new home "Ned" after the old one; and Aunt Alice, writing years later, got confused in recording the location of her father's birthplace. There is no doubt, however, of an Edgeworthstown tradition in the family. William Kernan landed in New York in August of the last year of the eighteenth century, 1800. He settled on land in the then Town of Frederick, Steuben County, New York, in 1802,just east of what is now the village of Wayne. He first built a birch bark cabin which was re placed by a log house of three rooms and an attic on the north side of the present Route 230 that leads from Wayne to Dundee. Later he built a house on the south side of the road opposite the log house. It still stands in what, in the division of Steuben County, became the Town of Tyrone, Schuyler County. William Kernan's naturalization certificate is dated 1807. As William Kearnan, Gentleman, he was commissioned ensign in the Company of Light Infantry, Regiment of Militia in the County of Steuben, on April 6, 1807; Quartermaster on March 12, 18m; Adjutant on February 11, 18n; Second Major, sub nom. William Kernan, Esquire, in the 81st Regiment of Infantry of the State of New York on March 22, 1816; Lieutenant Colonel on February 17, 1820; and Colonel on August 20, 1823. His final commission, as Brigadier General of the First Brigade of Infantry of the State of New York, is dated January rn, 1825. He held the rank of major on the staff of General McClure in the War of 1812. He was a member of the Legislature in 1833-1834, and of the Constitutional Convention of 1846. William Kernan and his wife left Wayne in 1857, and moved to Utica. They lived first at Elizabeth and Second Streets, then at Elizabeth and Kent Streets, and finally at 55 Elizabeth Street. They are both buried in Saint Agnes Cemetery, Utica.

APPENDIX A Some Descendants of Bryan Kernan through Bartholomew and __ (Kernan) Taylor.

Burke: Landed Gentry of Ireland, 4th Edition, 1958, records under Corballis, formerly of Ratoath Manor that Richard Corballis (1769-1847) of Rosemount, Clonskeagh, County Dublin, on November 1, 1791 married Deborah Taylor, daughter of Bartholomew Taylor, of Castlepollard, County Meath. Inasmuch as it also records that they had a son 'John Richard Corballis (1796-1879), it is highly probable that this is the Bartholomew Taylor identified in Bryan Kernan's will as his son-in-law, (see 1-4 and Eustace letter, at page 6), and, hence, that Richard and Deborah (Taylor) Corballis' descendants are also descendants of Bryan Kernan. However, since they are not Utica Kernans, let it suffice here to outline the descent of the descendant who lives in Con necticut, and to give references for further information.

'John Richard Corballis, (see 2-13), of Rosemount, County Dublin, and Galtrim and Dunmore, County Meath, Q. C., LLD., Knight of the Golden Spur and Count of the Lateran, in 1828 married Jane Eleanor Martyn, daughter of Edward Martyn, of Tullyra, County Galway. Of their four sons and three daughters, only 'James (1843-1893) and Deborah or Mary Deborah ( -l 886) had issue.

James Corballis left two sons by his wife Adelaide Mary ( -1951), daugh- ter of Sir James Donnet, K.C.B.: Reverend John Henry James Corballis (1887-1955), Army Chaplain and Administrator of Southwark Cathedral, and Wing Commander Edward Roux Littledale Corballis (1890-1967), D.S.O., O.B.E., R.A.F.

Edward Roux Littledale Corballis had two daughters by his first wife, Enid Dorothy Adams, of Bath: Barbara Marie Therese (1917- ), (Mrs. Myles Formby) and Pamela Mary Philippa (1918- ), (Mrs. Paul Alured Berthon) who in 1958 lived at Clays Copse, Sway, Han ts. Both have children. He had a son Edward Anthony Beals Corballis by his second wife Helen Beals (1906- 1963) daughter of John David and Helen (Nicholson) Beals, whom he married in 1939 in Greenwich, Connecticut. He had no children by his third wife Elizabeth (Slocum) Partridge, a widow. He died in Winter Park, Florida.

Edward Anthony Beals Corballis, born May 9, 1941 at New York, New York, married Cathy Wood on September 7, 1963 at New York, New York, daughter of Dudley Phelps King and Martha (Kountze) Wood. She was born 84 THE UncA KERNANS

August 15, 1943 at New York, New York. Their children are Camilla, born June 8, 1966, and Anthony Beals, born September IO, 1968, both at Green wich, Connecticut.

Deborah Corballis on January 8, 1851 married the Right Honorable Stephen Woulfe Flanagan (1817-1891) of Rathfudagh and Rathtermon, County Roscommon, P.C., J. P., Q.C. Of their six sons and five daughters, only John, Stephen and Terence had issue. The head of the family in 1958 was John's son John Henry Woulje Flanagan, of 14 F Hyde Mansions, London, N.W.1.

For further details of these and the numerous other descendants of Richard and Deborah (Taylor) Corballis, see Burke, op. cit.: Corballis at page 180; Woulfe Flanagan at page 290; Fitzgerald-Lombard at pages 446-447; and Burke, rnth Edition, 1904: Daunt at pages 136-137; and Mac Teman at page 374. APPENDIX B: The Stubbs Family

Since all but a few of the persons listed in this book are descendants of Rosanna Maria Stubbs as well as of William Kernan (2-8), its publication affords an oppor tunity to record what is known of her forebears. The information comes from a document written by Rosanna's mother, Margaret Mary (Read) Stubbs, of Dublin, Ireland, and Wayne, New York, and from William Stubbs' bible, which now belong to Lawrence E. Stubbs, of Gaithersburg, Maryland. Of her father, William Stubbs, it is recorded only that he came from White wood, County Meath, Ireland. This is a townland lying 1½' miles southeast of Kilmainham Wood. Nothing is now known of his parentage. However, John Devereux Kernan (4-3) recorded a tradition derived from Rosanna that the Stubbs were of English extraction, two brothers having gone to Ireland in the English Army in the early seventeenth century. One of the brothers was supposed to have married a sister of the Duke of Leinster. Since that dukedom was created only in the mid eighteenth century, the grain of truth might be that he married into the Fitzgerald family which held the Earldom of Kildare before the dukedom was created. William Stubbs was married on May 20, 1781, in Saint Paul's Church, Arran Quay, Dublin, to Margaret Mary Read, daughter of Lawrence and Mary (Brady) Read, of Queen Street, Dublin. Her name is recorded in that church's records as Mary Read, but her gravestone at Wayne, New York, bears out that she used both names. The marriage was reported in the Hibernian Journal for Wednesday, May 23, 1781, as follows: Marriages: Mr. William Stubbs woolen draper in Francis Street to Miss Read of Queen Street. John Devereux Kernan (6-12) has a silver spoon of late eighteenth century Dublin manufacture bearing the initials w5M for William and Margaret Stubbs and the Stubbs crest, a griffin's head. Record of the baptism of only one of their thirteen children has been found that of Mary Ann, born on August 31, 1800, at the Church of Saint Nicholas of Myra, Francis Street, Dublin. The mother's name is given there as Margaret. William and Margaret Mary Stubbs, and six children came to the United States in the early ,r8oos. They first lived in New York City where they became friendly with Elizabeth Ann Bailey Seton who had recently returned a widow from Italy. They soon moved to Wayne, New York, and settled on the west side of Little Lake. Margaret Mary Stubbs died on May 31, 1813, at Wayne and is buried on the Kernan farm, along with several infant Pattens and Quins, her granddaughter, Margaret Mary (Kernan) Quin, and Ann Ross, a servant who had come from Ireland with them. William Stubbs moved to Washington, D. C., with his son Edward, and died there December 19, 1831.

Francis Magan, a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, was one of the first Roman Catholics admitted to the Bar after the lifting of the disabilities against Catholics in 1793. A lead ing member of the Unitsd Irishmen, he lived and died an apparently honorable man, though eccentric in his later years. The fortune he left his sister Elizabeth (seep. 6), along with his eccentricity, was derived in part from the pension granted him by the English Government for his services. He is buried in Saint Michael's and Saint John 1 s Church, Arran Quay, Dublin.
