Aek Athens Fc Losc Lille Métropole PRESS KITS Group stage - Group H - Matchday 3 Thursday, 25 November 2004 - 21:00 (local time) Spyros Louis - Athens (Maroussi) AEK ATHENS FC LOSC LILLE MÉTROPOLE MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Bernhard Brugger (AUT) Assistant referees Norbert Schwab (AUT), Andreas Lambert (AUT) Fourth official Louis Hofmann (AUT) UEFA delegate Sándor Berzi (HUN) MATCH BACKGROUND AEK hope for victory at 13th time of asking AEK Athens FC are looking to break an extraordinary sequence of results against French clubs in UEFA club competitions. Thirteenth time lucky? Before this game, AEK had played twelve games against French clubs and so far have managed to draw six and lose six games. So will the elusive first win arrive at the 13th hurdle? AS Monaco FC have been involved in the curious statistic on four occasions – in the 1963/64 European Champion Clubs’ Cup, the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup, and in the UEFA Champions League games of 1993/94 and of last season. Olympique de Marseille provided the opposition in the 1989/90 Champion Clubs’ Cup and Paris Saint- Germain FC played AEK in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Intertoto winners LOSC Lille Métropole, who along with FC Schalke 04 and Villarreal CF, qualified for the UEFA Cup via the UEFA Intertoto Cup, have met Greek opposition before in their 2001/02 UEFA Champions League campaign when they faced Olympiacos CFP twice in the group stage. Both teams won their home games, with Lille winning 3-1 in France, as goals from Dagui Bakari (33 minutes), Bruno Cheyrou (44) and Grégory Tafforeau (79) put them in control before Stylianos Giannakopoulos (90) scored Olympiacos' consolation. However, they lost 2-1 in Greece even though Salaheddine Baddir (38) put Lille ahead only for Alexios Alexandris (53) and Andreas Niniadis (64) to fight back for the home side. Both teams trailed RC Deportivo La Coruña and Manchester United FC who both advanced to the second group stage. Third season This is their third season of UEFA club competitions, and their progress in this season’s UEFA Cup stalled in their opening group game with a 1-0 defeat at TSV Alemannia Aachen, but recovered lost ground with the home 2-1 success over Zenit. There may be pressure on Lille to maintain the unbeaten record of French clubs against AEK, though they will also aim to be the first French club to win at the home of the Athens club. 1/11 16:32:50 uefa.com Matchday 3 - Group H - Thursday, 25 November 2004 - PRESS KITS AEK-LILLE PLAYERS PROFILES AEK Athens FC Goalkeepers No Name Nat. Football in France Global Sport Cultures Eds Gary Armstrong, Brunel University, Richard Giulianotti, University of Aberdeen, and David Andrews, The University of Maryland From the Olympics and the World Cup to extreme sports and kabaddi, the social significance of sport at both global and local levels has become increasingly clear in recent years. The contested nature of identity is widely addressed in the social sciences, but sport as a particularly revealing site of such contestation, in both industrialising and post-industrial nations, has been less fruitfully explored. Further, sport and sporting corporations are increasingly powerful players in the world economy. Sport is now central to the social and technological development of mass media, notably in telecommunications and digital television. It is also a crucial medium through which specific populations and political elites communicate and interact with each other on a global stage. Berg publishers are pleased to announce a new book series that will examine and evaluate the role of sport in the contemporary world. Truly global in scope, the series seeks to adopt a grounded, constructively critical stance towards prior work within sport studies and to answer such questions as: • How are sports experienced and practised at the everyday level within local settings? • How do specific cultures construct and negotiate forms of social stratification (such as gender, class, ethnicity) within sporting contexts? • What is the impact of mediation and corporate globalisation upon local sports cultures? Determinedly interdisciplinary, the series will nevertheless privilege anthropological, historical and sociological approaches, but will consider submissions from cultural studies, economics, geography, human kinetics, international relations, law, philosophy and political science.

PRESS KITS Group stage - Group H - Matchday 4 Thursday, 2 December 2004 - 20:45 (local time) Rhein Energie Stadion - Cologne TSV ALEMANNIA AACHEN FC ZENIT ST. PETERSBURG MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Sorin Corpodean (ROM) Assistant referees Marcel Savaniu (ROM), Miklos Istvan Nagy (ROM) Fourth official Robert Dumitru (ROM) UEFA delegate Yoav Strauss (ISR) MATCH BACKGROUND Aachen and Zenit look to restore winning feeling Both TSV Alemannia Aachen and FC Zenit St. Peterburg maintain considerable interest in progressing from Group H and into the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup after both won their opening games back in October. Opening wins Aachen shocked LOSC Lille Métropole with a 1-0 win, while Zenit had a convincing 5-1 win over AEK Athens FC. However, neither club has won since, so are keen to restore the winning habit. European novices Aachen are in their first UEFA club competition season, and have qualified as a second division club after losing the DFB-Pokal final narrowly to Werder Bremen. Their win against Lille has given their campaign added impetus, and the Germans will now meet Russian opposition for the first time. Zenit defeated Zenit, who finished fourth in the recently concluded Russian league championship, enter this game looking to end a sequence of four consecutive defeats against German clubs in UEFA club competitions. Playing as Zenit Leningrad as part of the former Soviet Union they met 1. FC Dynamo Dresden, then of the former German Democratic Republic, in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup first round and lost both games. Dresden won 2-1 in Leningrad despite the fact that Zenit took the lead through Yuri Zhedlukov after 14 minutes.

  • LIVERPOOL FC V CSKA MOSKVA
STADE LOUIS II, MONACO FRIDAY 26 AUGUST 2005 at 20.45 UEFA SUPER CUP LIVERPOOL FC v CSKA MOSKVA Welcome to the eighth UEFA Super Cup to be played in Monaco since the event was switched to a single match at a neutral venue in 1998. Like the first, the eighth involves an English team and Liverpool FC are the only one to have visited Monaco twice – the first time being in 2001, when, as UEFA Cup winners, they took on the champions of Europe, FC Bayern München, and beat them 3-2 thanks to goals by John Arne Riise, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. Their opponents this time, however, are making history as debutants. PFC CSKA Moskva, to give them their full name, are the first Russian club ever to compete for the UEFA Super Cup and will be more than keen to wave the flag in style against the winners of the dramatic UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul. The UEFA Super Cup is expected to be watched by a capacity crowd of 18,000, with some 5,000 CSKA Moskva fans making the trip from Russia to give their team historic levels of support on an historic occasion. Although the two teams have jointly played almost 300 matches in UEFA club competitions (Liverpool FC almost five times as many as their Russian rivals) this is the first time they have met. Curiously, this was also the case when Liverpool met AC Milan in Istanbul and when CSKA Moskva took on Sporting Clube in Lisbon.
