AEK ATHENS FC LOSC LILLE MÉTROPOLE

MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Bernhard Brugger (AUT) Assistant referees Norbert Schwab (AUT), Andreas Lambert (AUT) Fourth official Louis Hofmann (AUT) UEFA delegate Sándor Berzi (HUN)

MATCH BACKGROUND AEK hope for victory at 13th time of asking AEK Athens FC are looking to break an extraordinary sequence of results against French clubs in UEFA club competitions.

Thirteenth time lucky? Before this game, AEK had played twelve games against French clubs and so far have managed to draw six and lose six games. So will the elusive first win arrive at the 13th hurdle? AS Monaco FC have been involved in the curious statistic on four occasions – in the 1963/64 European Champion Clubs’ Cup, the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup, and in the UEFA Champions League games of 1993/94 and of last season. provided the opposition in the 1989/90 Champion Clubs’ Cup and Paris Saint- Germain FC played AEK in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

Intertoto winners LOSC Lille Métropole, who along with FC Schalke 04 and Villarreal CF, qualified for the UEFA Cup via the UEFA Intertoto Cup, have met Greek opposition before in their 2001/02 UEFA Champions League campaign when they faced Olympiacos CFP twice in the group stage. Both teams won their home games, with Lille winning 3-1 in France, as goals from Dagui Bakari (33 minutes), Bruno Cheyrou (44) and Grégory Tafforeau (79) put them in control before Stylianos Giannakopoulos (90) scored Olympiacos' consolation. However, they lost 2-1 in Greece even though Salaheddine Baddir (38) put Lille ahead only for Alexios Alexandris (53) and Andreas Niniadis (64) to fight back for the home side. Both teams trailed RC Deportivo La Coruña and Manchester United FC who both advanced to the second group stage.

Third season This is their third season of UEFA club competitions, and their progress in this season’s UEFA Cup stalled in their opening group game with a 1-0 defeat at TSV , but recovered lost ground with the home 2-1 success over Zenit. There may be pressure on Lille to maintain the unbeaten record of French clubs against AEK, though they will also aim to be the first French club to win at the home of the Athens club.

DOMESTIC FORMGUIDE

Sevilla return to form (Monday, 22 November 2004) AEK Athens FC failed to hit top form as they struggled to a 1-0 win at the weekend, but Sevilla FC were far more impressive as they beat RCD Espanyol by the same scoreline.

AEK AEK maintained their unbeaten start to the Greek season but coach Fernando Santos conceded his side were lucky to gain a 1-0 victory at Ergotelis FC on Sunday. Konstantinos Katsouranis scored the only goal with a powerful header on 75 minutes. Defender Christos Kontis picked up a bicep injury but will line up against LOSC Lille Métropole on Thursday, however midfield player Ivan Rusev will miss out with a knee problem.

Lille Lille were held to a second successive 1-1 league draw in the northern derby at RC Lens on Saturday. As against AS Monaco FC the previous weekend, Claude Puel's team went a goal behind before Christophe Landrin again secured a share of the spoils with a 58th-minute equaliser. Lille stay second in Ligue 1. Midfield player Mathieu Chalmé (broken cheekbone) and striker Johan Audel (sprained ankle) remain sidelined.

Zenit Russia winger Vladimir Bystrov and striker Andrei Andrei Arshavin are back in training with FC Zenit St. Peterburg after recovering from injuries. With the domestic league finishing earlier this month with Zenit in fourth place, competitive action has been limited to the national team, and striker Aleksandr Kerzhakov and goalkeeper Viacheslav Malafeev played in Russia's 4-0 defeat of Estonia in last week's FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Sevilla Julio Baptista scored his sixth goal of the season as Sevilla ended a run of three games without a win with a 1-0 home victory against Espanyol. Playing alongside Jesuli after a lengthy lay-off with a muscle tear, Baptista scored the only goal with a tap-in on 39 minutes. He later failed from the penalty spot but that miss proved irrelevant as Seville went third in Spain's Primera División.

Aachen TSV Alemannia Aachen, who will sit out Matchday 3, came from behind to win 2-1 at 2. rivals FC Energie Cottbus on Monday thanks to goals by Alexander Klitzpera and Simon Rolfes. Out injured are Florian Bruns (knee ligament) and Emil Noll (knee). Coach Dieter Hecking fielded Dennis Brinkmann instead of Wilfried Landgraf at right-back, Reiner Plasshenrich returned from a one-match ban and Sergio Pinto played on the right of the attack alongside Erik Meijer and Kai Michalke.

Zenit miss out on medals (Monday, 15 November 2004) FC Zenit St. Peterburg's season ended in disappointment despite a convincing victory, but they were the only Group H contenders to win this weekend.

Zenit Having seen their hopes of a first Russian title disappear last Monday with a 3-2 home defeat by FC Moskva, Zenit were forced to settle for fourth spot - behind FC Krylya Sovetov Samara on head-to-head record and outside the UEFA Cup places - despite ending the campaign with a 5-2 victory at relegated SC Rotor Volgograd on Friday. Aleksandr Kerzhakov gave Zenit an early lead with his chart-topping 18th goal of the season, and while Rotor equalised soon after, Andrei Arshavin restored the advantage before half-time. Olexandr Spivak and Igor Denisov (2) completed the rout, with Kerzhakov missing a penalty. Arshavin and Vladimir Bystrov have since picked up foot and pelvic problems respectively in training with the national team but are expected to be fit to play Sevilla FC on 25 November.

Sevilla A shock 2-1 defeat at bottom-of-the-table CD Numancia on Saturday saw Sevilla end the weekend in sixth place in Spain. The Andalusians went ahead through Antonio Puerta just after the hour but Numancia replied with two goals in six minutes as the game drew to a close. Forward Jesuli returned for Sevilla after several months on the sidelines.

Lille LOSC Lille Métropole, who go to AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3, drew 1-1 at home to AS Monaco FC on Sunday to remain second in Ligue 1. Ernesto Chevantón gave Monaco the lead on the half-hour - only the second home goal conceded by Lille this term - but Claude Puel's side levelled before the break through Christophe Landrin to maintain their unbeaten home league record. are now three points ahead, but Lille got one over the champions the previous Wednesday with a 3-2 extra-time win in the French League Cup. Ahead of the 25 November fixture with AEK, midfielder Mathieu Chalmé is out with a broken cheekbone while striker Johan Audel has overcome an ankle strain.

AEK With no league fixtures in Greece due to their FIFA World Cup encounter with Kazakhstan on 17 November, AEK celebrated their 80th anniversary with a Saturday friendly against Galatasaray SK in Athens's Olympic stadium that finished 0-0. heir only injury worry is Nikolaos Georgeas, who has resumed light training after a leg operation.

Aachen TSV Alemannia Aachen, who sit out Matchday 3, dropped two valuable points in the 2. Bundesliga on Sunday as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by SC Rot-Weiss Essen. Kai Michalke put Aachen in front on 34 minutes, but the visitors equalised two minutes into the second half. Aachen, who remain fourth, were without Emil Noll due to a knee injury.

Low point for Zenit (Monday, 8 November 2004) After losing to LOSC Lille Métropole last Thursday, FC Zenit St. Peterburg suffered an even more damaging result on Monday as a 3-2 home defeat by FC Moskva ended their title hopes in Russia.

Zenit Zenit were missing suspended captain Vladislav Radimov and Vladimir Bystrov for the Moskva match and fell behind to an early goal from Maksim Beletskiy. Although Igor Denisov drew them level shortly before the break, the game was already lost by the time LukášHartig scored their second goal in added time. Zenit, who face Sevilla FC on 25 November, are left five points behind leaders FC Lokomotiv Moskva with one match remaining.

Sevilla Sevilla have made an excellent start to the Primera División season but they dropped to fourth place on Sunday after drawing 1-1 at home to RCD Mallorca. Joaquín Caparrós's side looked to be heading for a win when Antonio López scored on 71 minutes but Mallorca replied seven minutes later. Meanwhile, striker Aziza Makukula is in the final stages of his rehabilitation following a knee ligament injury.

Aachen TSV Alemannia Aachen, the team Sevilla defeated 2-0 last Thursday, lost 1-0 to MSV Duisburg on Monday night to stay fourth in the 2. Bundesliga.

Lille Lille kept up their pursuit of Ligue 1 leaders Olympique Lyonnais as they secured a ninth win in 13 games, 2-0 against bottom club FC Istres. Nigerian striker Peter Odemwingie, who is ineligible for the UEFA Cup, scored the first goal and won the penalty from which Philippe Brunel added the second. Defenders Rafael Schmitz and Grégory Tafforeau and striker Matt Moussilou did not feature, but Mathieu Chalmé is the one major doubt for the 25 November visit to AEK Athens FC due to his fractured cheekbone.

Meanwhile, there was good news for midfielder Stéphane Dumont, who has signed a contract extension until summer 2008.

AEK Lille's next opponents are AEK, who sit second in the Hellenic National League after a goalless home draw with Athens rivals Olympiacos CFP maintained their unbeaten record this season. After the match, which attracted 65,000 spectators to the Olympic Stadium, AEK coach Fernando Santos said he was "proud of" his players. Santos was missing Ghanaian defender Kofi Amponsah (thigh) and Leonidas Kampantais (ankle) and the only other absentee was Nikolaos Georgeas, who has not played since undergoing surgery in the summer.
