PRESS KITS Group stage - Group H - Matchday 4 Thursday, 2 December 2004 - 20:45 (local time) Rhein Energie Stadion - Cologne TSV ALEMANNIA AACHEN FC ZENIT ST. PETERSBURG MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Sorin Corpodean (ROM) Assistant referees Marcel Savaniu (ROM), Miklos Istvan Nagy (ROM) Fourth official Robert Dumitru (ROM) UEFA delegate Yoav Strauss (ISR) MATCH BACKGROUND Aachen and Zenit look to restore winning feeling Both TSV Alemannia Aachen and FC Zenit St. Peterburg maintain considerable interest in progressing from Group H and into the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup after both won their opening games back in October. Opening wins Aachen shocked LOSC Lille Métropole with a 1-0 win, while Zenit had a convincing 5-1 win over AEK Athens FC. However, neither club has won since, so are keen to restore the winning habit. European novices Aachen are in their first UEFA club competition season, and have qualified as a second division club after losing the DFB-Pokal final narrowly to Werder Bremen. Their win against Lille has given their campaign added impetus, and the Germans will now meet Russian opposition for the first time. Zenit defeated Zenit, who finished fourth in the recently concluded Russian league championship, enter this game looking to end a sequence of four consecutive defeats against German clubs in UEFA club competitions. Playing as Zenit Leningrad as part of the former Soviet Union they met 1. FC Dynamo Dresden, then of the former German Democratic Republic, in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup first round and lost both games. Dresden won 2-1 in Leningrad despite the fact that Zenit took the lead through Yuri Zhedlukov after 14 minutes. But Hans-Jurgen Dörner and Gerd Heidler scored two goals in four minutes before the break for Dresden. It proved easier for the Germans to score on their home patch as they raced to a two-goal lead in the opening 18 minutes before Vladimir Kazacheynok replied for Zenit after 39 minutes. Dresden added two further goals in the second half to complete a 6-2 aggregate win with a 4-1 home win. Easy for Stuttgart Then in the 1989/90 UEFA Cup, Zenit were paired with VfB Stuttgart and again were beaten in both legs of the second round tie. Stuttgart visited Leningrad for the first leg and a late goal from Karl Allgöwer gave them the confidence to inflict a 5-0 defeat on Zenit in the return leg. Asgeir Sigurvinsson scored twice in the return leg as Stuttgart won 6-0 on aggregate. So Zenit enter this game needing to reverse the past formguide, which has seen them score just twice and concede 12 goals in the four games against German opposition. 1/7 13:01:16 uefa.com Matchday 4 - Group H - Thursday, 2 December 2004 - PRESS KITS AACHEN-ZENIT PLAYERS PROFILES TSV Alemannia Aachen Goalkeepers No Name Nat. Sevilla Sevilla FC's inconsistent season continued on Sunday when they were soundly beaten at CA Osasuna in a match they finished with ten men. After Iñaki Muñoz had put the home side ahead, Carlitos ensured the scores were level at the interval with his first goal of the campaign. Osasuna then struck three second-half goals, while Javi Navarro was sent off as Sevilla slipped to fifth in the table. AEK AEK went top of the Alpha Ethniki after a 1-0 home success against Halkidona FC. Alessandro Soares scored the only goal, his seventh in the league, as the side bereft of Christos Kontis (biceps) and Ivan Rusev (knee) maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign. AEK must win at Sevilla on Thursday, but will have to do so without suspended centre-half Bruno Alves. Evangelos Moras is the likely replacement. Aachen Aachen came from a goal down to record an emphatic 5-1 victory against TSV 1860 München in the 2. Bundesliga. Simon Rolfes, Alexander Klitzpera and Erik Meijer were all on target before the break, and Kai Michalke and Thomas Stehle sealed a comfortable win with two more in the second half. Florian Bruns missed out with a knee injury. Zenit FC Zenit St. Peterburg will travel to Germany without Kamil Contofalský after the goalkeeper joined the Slovakia squad for an international tournament in Thailand. Defender Martin Škrtel also received a call-up but was unavailable as he is unfit. Playmaker Vladislav Radimov has been struggling with a knock sustained in the 1-1 draw against Sevilla last Thursday but is expected to return for the Russian team's final Group H fixture. Lille LOSC Lille Métropole, who sit out Matchday 4, fell five points behind Ligue 1 leaders Olympique Lyonnais as they were held to a third consecutive 1-1 draw, at home to RC Strasbourg. It could have been worse for the Group H leaders who were behind for much of the game until Peter Odemwingie, ineligible for the UEFA Cup after starting the season with RAA Louviéroise, levelled five minutes from time. Lille have no injury concerns ahead of the visit of Sevilla on 15 December. 4/7 13:01:16 uefa.com Matchday 4 - Group H - Thursday, 2 December 2004 - PRESS KITS AACHEN-ZENIT DOMESTIC LEAGUE DETAILS TSV Alemannia Aachen () Results Standings Date Match Res R Clubs Pld W D L GF GA Pts Fixtures Date Match FC Zenit St. Petersburg (Premier-Liga) Results Standings Date Match Res R Clubs Pld W D L GF GA Pts 16.10.2004 Rubin - Zenit 1 - 1 1 Lokomotiv Moskva 30 18 7 5 44 19 61 25.10.2004 Zenit - CSKA Moskva 0 - 3 2 CSKA Moskva 30 17 9 4 53 22 60 31.10.2004 Saturn - Zenit 1 - 3 3 Krylya Sovetov 30 17 5 8 50 41 56 08.11.2004 Zenit - Moskva 2 - 3 4 Zenit 30 17 5 8 55 37 56 12.11.2004 Rotor - Zenit 2 - 5 5 Torpedo Moskva 30 16 6 8 53 37 54 6 Shinnik 30 12 8 10 29 29 44 7 Saturn 30 10 11 9 37 30 41 8 Spartak Moskva 30 11 7 12 43 44 40 9 Moskva 30 10 10 10 38 39 40 10 Rubin 30 7 12 11 32 31 33 11 Amkar 30 6 12 12 27 42 30 12 Rostov 30 7 8 15 28 42 29 Fixtures 13 Dinamo Moskva 30 6 11 13 27 38 29 Date Match 14 Alania 30 7 7 16 28 52 28 15 Kuban 30 6 10 14 26 42 28 16 Rotor 30 4 10 16 28 53 22 5/7 13:01:16 uefa.com Matchday 4 - Group H - Thursday, 2 December 2004 - PRESS KITS AACHEN-ZENIT REFEREE Sorin Corpodean (ROM) Date of birth: 29.03.1965 Matches involving teams from the two countries involved in this match Date Competition Stage Match Res Venue 07.12.2000 UCUP R3 Rayo - Lokomotiv Moskva 2-0 Madrid 12.11.2002 UCL GS1 Auxerre - Dortmund 1-0 Auxerre ALL-TIME STATISTICS Head-to-head record No matches have been played between the two clubs Home teams record versus clubs from the away teams country Home club has never played against clubs of the country of the away team Away teams record versus clubs from the home teams country Date Competition Stage Match Res Venue 16.09.1981 UCUP R1 Zenit - Dresden 1-2 St.
