Historical Note:
Edward Coles was born in Virginia on December 15, 1786. He moved to Edwardsville, Illinois, in 1817 to free his slaves. He became the state’s second governor. After leaving office, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He owned land in Pike and Lincoln Counties, Missouri. He died in Philadelphia on July 7, 1868.
