Bodin 180 Index 253 page_vii Page 1 Editor's Introduction I In one of several differing descriptions of the "History of Political Ideas" project that Voegelin prepared for his editors, he divided his proposed study into three chronological periods.1 The first period, entitled "Polis and Philosophy," went to 300 B.C. The second, entitled "Empire and Christianity," covered the period from 300 B.C. to A.D. 1500; and the last, entitled "The Gnostic Age,'' was from A.D. 1500 to the present. Those who are familiar with Voegelin's work, especially his ew Science of Politics and Science, Politics, and Gnosticism,2 will recognize the term Gnosticism as one of the concepts Voegelin found most helpful in his own efforts to better understand the nature of political modernity. Concerned that contemporary political science had not yet succeeded in truly comprehending the nature of the then dominant political ideologies and their accompanying collectivist movementsthat is, Nazism, fascism, and CommunismVoegelin sought a better understanding of what he considered to be the disorder of the age. His first attempt, published as Die politischen Religionen,3 argued for the essentially religious character of what at first may have appeared to be a purely secular phenomenon. 1.The Collected Works of Eric Voegelin, vol. 19, History of Political Ideas, vol. Eric Voegelin, Die politischen Religionen (Vienna: Bermann-Fischer, 1938). page_1 Page 2 In this analysis, Voegelin interpreted National Socialism, in particular, as an example of an essentially immanentist political religion. By immanentizing the object of mankind's quest for the ground of Being, such forms of religion were in fact based upon a divinization of selected features of the profane order. On the one hand, National Socialism was a peculiarly modern phenomenon inasmuch as it claimed that its principles were supported by the teachings of modern science. At the same time, however, according to Voegelin's early analysis, National Socialism, albeit modern, represented simply another example of a specific and apparently recurring form of religious consciousness. In time, Voegelin himself came to question the adequacy of this understanding. By grouping together such immanentist religious movements as modern National Socialism, on one hand, and the ancient cult of the Egyptian sun-god, on the other, this argument failed to acknowledge important differences in kind. The cult of the Egyptian sun-god existed prior to the emergence of the Israelitic, Greek, and Christian articulations of transcendence. It is as if the human soul as a sensorium of transcendence had not yet been "discovered."4 Prior to such a discovery, reality was experienced as compact and undifferentiated. However, given the events of Greek philosophy and Israelitic and Christian revelation, the earlier understanding of a compact and undifferentiated reality was "corrected" by the discovery of the transcendent source of order itself. This discovery was a historical event in consciousness. Once it had occurred, one could not simply go back to earlier formulations without intentionally ignoring this newly articulated truth. Movements like National Socialism were fundamentally different from the cult of the Egyptian sun-god inasmuch as they required a turning away from a dimension of reality that had not yet become apparent to those who lived prior to its discovery. The cult of the Egyptian sungod expressed the truth of reality as it was experienced at the time. National Socialism, on the other hand, sought to deny the order of reality as it had come to be understood after the discovery of the soul as the sensorium of transcendence. Voegelin's earlier treatment of the two cults as essentially similar phenomena failed to appreciate this important difference. 4. Rosenmeyer (New York: Harper and Row, 1960). page_2 Page 3 Voegelin's dissatisfaction with the imprecision of the concept of political religion as an analytical category for understanding political modernity led him to a reexamination of his prior worka reexamination that occurred during the time he was working on his History of Political Ideas. The result of that effort appeared in his ew Science of Politics. There, Voegelin concluded that "the essence of modernity [is] the growth of Gnosticism."5 From his perspective, the superiority of this analysis, vis-à-vis his earlier efforts, was due to the fact that it more precisely explained that which differentiated the mass movements of modernity from their ancient analogues.

    Chronology of 19 Works in Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art Darren Hudson Hick Notes on Selection This chronology, as with this Companion as a whole, focuses on those works that contribute to the Western tradition of aesthetics, and, beginning in the twentieth century, in the analytic current of thought within that tradition (as opposed to the Continental one). As with the history of Western philosophy in general, the study of philosophical problems in art and beauty dates back to the ancient period, and is infl uenced by the major philosophical and cultural move- ments through the centuries. Much of what survives from the ancient to the post-Hellenistic period does so in fragments or references. In cases where only fragments or references exist, and where dating these is especially problematic, the author or attributed author and (where available) his dates of birth and death are listed. Where works have not survived even as fragments, these are not listed. As well, much of what sur- vives up to the medieval period is diffi cult to date, and is at times of disputable attribution. In these cases, whatever information is available is listed. Aesthetics in the period between the ancients and the medievals tends to be dominated by adherence to Platonic, Aristotelian, and other theories rooted in the ancient period, and as such tends to be generally lacking in substantive the- oretical advancements. And while still heavily infl uenced by ancient thinking, works from the medieval period tend also to be heavily infl uenced by religious thinking, and so many issues pertaining to art and aesthetics are intertwined with issues of religion as “theological aesthetics.” Movements in art theory and aes- thetics in the Renaissance, meanwhile, were largely advanced by working artists, and so tend to be couched in observational or pedagogical approaches, rather than strictly theoretical ones.

The redundancy in Jennifer Tsien’s provocative title—isn’t bad taste always the taste of others?—quite precisely conveys the central idea of this volume and the limits of its argument. Tsien is less concerned with synthesizing a global theory of taste in the eighteenth century than with exploring the ways in which various parties used the label of bad taste to discredit other authors, genres, interpretations, periods, nations, or schools. According to Tsien, accusations of bad taste were used by the period’s successive critical parties to defend their opinions, works, and values against two threats posed by the expanding book market in the eighteenth century: a flood of mediocre publications that risked sullying the French reputation for cultural supremacy, and a democratization of critique that allowed people of dubious qualification to pass judgment on works. Effectively, the label of bad taste was a means of canon formation, maintaining the values of one period or party—in this case the classical ideals of the previous century—by suppressing competing works and genres. Over time, the “edifice of taste” and the canon were built “over the remains of rejected authors, styles, words, and genres” (p. 185), a selection of which Tsien resuscitates for analysis in her work.

La revue paraît trois ou quatre fois, ou dix, puis disparaît. On n’entend plus parler d’elle. Seuls quelques courriéristes littéraires ont salué sa naissance… et sa mort. Cependant, nos jeunes gens ne se découragent pas : riches de l’expérience acquise, ils créent une autre revue. A la troisième, s’ils ont quelque talent, on n’ignore plus leur nom et ils sont admis à collaborer dans d’autres revues moins éphémères. Charles Batteaux's Les beaux arts réduit à un même principe (1746) and its Danish Translation (1773-74) The Nordic Network for the History of Rhetoric Second Nordic Conference Helsinki, August 25-28, 2002 In his treatise Les beaux arts réduit à un même principe (1746) (The fine arts reduced to a single principle), Charles Batteux is in search of a principle common to all the fine arts and he argues that this principle is the imitation of beautiful nature. Batteux's famous and influential book is an important step towards a general theory of aesthetics. There is no doubt that it had a profound impact on contemporary aesthetic debates in Germany, but opinions differ among scholars as to its impact on contemporary French debate. Diderot's devastating critique from 1751 focused on Batteux's imprecision and vagueness; for example, he accused Batteux of never actually defining the term "fine nature". Some scholars (for example, John Pizer) hold that, largely because of this critique, Batteux had virtually no impact on contemporary aesthetics in his own land1. Others claim that the very idea of a unifying principle of the arts - no matter what principle - was taken up and broadcast by the encyclopaedists (Diderot, D'Alembert, Montesquieu); in other words, that Batteux's impact was enormous in France as well as in Germany. The complicated history of the various editions Les beaux arts réduits à un même principe was first published 1746 in one volume. In its wake, there followed several new editions that were substantially revised and enlarged, and had new titles.
