Rural Dean of Howden The Archbishop has appointed the Reverend Michael John Proctor, Vicar of South Cave and Ellerker with Broomfleet, to be Rural Dean of Howden for a period of five years in addition to his existing responsibilities. Mr Proctor will be Commissioned by the Archbishop of York at Bishopthorpe Palace, on Thursday 7th May 2015 at 9.30am. Mr Proctor succeeds the Reverend James Little. 4 Volume 4, Issue 1 2015 High Days and Holidays It is good to have special days, occasions and events to look forward to. I guess, in part, that is because such things give shape to our own story and the stories of others. Within the Christian year there are a number of significant festivals that give shape to the Christian story. Of course Christmas and Easter come readily to mind, others such as Whit Sunday (Pentecost) and Harvest Thanksgiving are also still reasonably familiar points of reference for many in the annual cycle. I wonder, what do you think? Could we rank ‘Ascension Day’ among the familiar? Traditionally ‘Ascension Day’ is regarded as the day that Jesus was taken up to Heaven in his resurrected body, in the presence of eleven of his apostles, occurring 40 days after his resurrection. This scene is depicted in the very fine East Window of St Anne’s Church, Ellerker. A special Ascension Day service will be held in St Anne’s Ellerker at 7.00pm on Thursday 14th May. This will be a joint service for all of the Churches of the Howden Deanery. After the service, wine and nibbles will be served and there will be an opportunity for folk to relax and enjoy each other’s company. I would like to encourage you to come along to St Anne’s on Ascension Day, by which time Horse Chestnut trees (also known as Ascension Trees) will be resplendent with flowers that point heavenward. It is as if they act as a gentle reminder to, as St Paul puts it, ‘Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth’ (Col 3:2). With every good wish Revd Mike Proctor. Vicar of South Cave with Ellerker and Broomfleet. 5 Volume 4, Issue 1 2015 Little Wold Lane Plantation site was acquired by The Woodland Trust on the 4th May 1994 with contributions to its purchase from South Cave Parish Council of £13.000 which included a sum of money from Persimmon Homes as a requirement of a planning condition and a sum of £5,000 was raised locally from fund raising. The wood commands an elevated position on the southern edge of a ridge and is a prominent landscape feature visible from South Cave Village and long distant views from the surrounding area. The gentle south facing slope within the wood links to a large arable field to the south and a wide valley. Its surroundings are predominately agricultural landscape. The area is fairly typical of the Yorkshire Wold’s chalk land landscape which has been designated by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council as : an Area of High Landscape Value. Little Wold Plantation is an attractive mature woodland, the wood is well used by local walkers , along the southern boundary of the woodland is a bridleway which forms a section of the National Wolds Way long distance footpath. 6 Volume 4, Issue 1 2015 The wood is reported to have a rich bird life but as yet no detailed survey has taken place to record this. In recent times there have been several reports of motor cycles using this facility intimidating walkers and disturbing the wildlife. If you have problems when using this area contact the site manager Mark Feather on [email protected] Tel 08437705621 Or write The Woodland Trust , Kempton Way, Grantham Lincs NG31 6LL This site was bought by local people for local people to enjoy in peace, somewhere to sit and watch the world go by or to walk in a tranquil area just enjoying the surroundings. Let’s keep it that way and not allow the area to be turned into some sort of race track. Linda Turner 7 Volume 4, Issue 1 2015 8 Volume 4, Issue 1 2015 Do you Remember? “I remember the South Hunsley swimming pool with fond memories …. not with the modern facilities it boasts at the moment and housed within a magnificent modern building … but a basic pool open to all elements and surrounded by a fence!!! Those swimming lessons were fun … albeit freezing … character building some would say! I also remember the infamous Spring Walks which took place every year to raise funds to build the pool, this fund raising started in Junior School, all those wanting to take part would be given a sponsor card and we would cajole parents, relatives and everybody we knew to sponsor us to complete this 12 mile walk!!!! The route took us through the local villages of North Ferriby, Swanland, Brantingham and Elloughton. It was quite an event - parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and children alike would gather at their starting point. Along the way you could hear groups chatting and laughing. To be honest it never felt like 12 miles!!! Alongside this attempt to raise money… we would also take into school a shilling a week … which may not seem much now but in those days a child could buy a lot of fruit salads and black jacks for a shilling.
