High Days and Holidays

It is good to have special days, occasions and events to look forward to. I guess, in part, that is because such things give shape to our own story and the stories of others.

Within the Christian year there are a number of significant festivals that give shape to the Christian story. Of course Christmas and Easter come readily to mind, others such as Whit Sunday (Pentecost) and Harvest Thanksgiving are also still reasonably familiar points of reference for many in the annual cycle.

I wonder, what do you think? Could we rank ‘Ascension Day’ among the familiar?

Traditionally ‘Ascension Day’ is regarded as the day that Jesus was taken up to Heaven in his resurrected body, in the presence of eleven of his apostles, occurring 40 days after his resurrection. This scene is depicted in the very fine East Window of St Anne’s Church, Ellerker.

A special Ascension Day service will be held in St Anne’s Ellerker at 7.00pm on Thursday 14th May. This will be a joint service for all of the Churches of the Howden Deanery. After the service, wine and nibbles will be served and there will be an opportunity for folk to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

I would like to encourage you to come along to St Anne’s on Ascension Day, by which time Horse Chestnut trees (also known as Ascension Trees) will be resplendent with flowers that point heavenward. It is as if they act as a gentle reminder to, as St Paul puts it, ‘Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth’ (Col 3:2).

With every good wish

Revd Mike Proctor. Vicar of South Cave with Ellerker and Broomfleet.

Little Wold Lane Plantation site was acquired by The Woodland Trust on the 4th May 1994 with contributions to its purchase from South Cave Parish Council of £13.000 which included a sum of money from Persimmon Homes as a requirement of a planning condition and a sum of £5,000 was raised locally from fund raising. The wood commands an elevated position on the southern edge of a ridge and is a prominent landscape feature visible from South Cave Village and long distant views from the surrounding area. The gentle south facing slope within the wood links to a large arable field to the south and a wide valley. Its surroundings are predominately agricultural landscape. The area is fairly typical of the Yorkshire Wold’s chalk land landscape which has been designated by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council as : an Area of High Landscape Value. Little Wold Plantation is an attractive mature woodland, the wood is well used by local walkers , along the southern boundary of the woodland is a bridleway which forms a section of the National Wolds Way long distance footpath.

6 Volume 4, Issue 1 2015

The wood is reported to have a rich bird life but as yet no detailed survey has taken place to record this. In recent times there have been several reports of motor cycles using this facility intimidating walkers and disturbing the wildlife. If you have problems when using this area contact the site manager Mark Feather on [email protected] Tel 08437705621 Or write The Woodland Trust , Kempton Way, Grantham Lincs NG31 6LL This site was bought by local people for local people to enjoy in peace, somewhere to sit and watch the world go by or to walk in a tranquil area just enjoying the surroundings. Let’s keep it that way and not allow the area to be turned into some sort of race track. Linda Turner

Do you Remember?

“I remember the South Hunsley swimming pool with fond memories …. not with the modern facilities it boasts at the moment and housed within a magnificent modern building … but a basic pool open to all elements and surrounded by a fence!!! Those swimming lessons were fun … albeit freezing … character building some would say!

I also remember the infamous Spring Walks which took place every year to raise funds to build the pool, this fund raising started in Junior School, all those wanting to take part would be given a sponsor card and we would cajole parents, relatives and everybody we knew to sponsor us to complete this 12 mile walk!!!! The route took us through the local villages of , , and . It was quite an event - parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and children alike would gather at their starting point. Along the way you could hear groups chatting and laughing. To be honest it never felt like 12 miles!!!

Alongside this attempt to raise money… we would also take into school a shilling a week … which may not seem much now but in those days a child could buy a lot of fruit salads and black jacks for a shilling.

To hear rumours that this pool may be closing saddens me when I think of all the time and effort which was put in, by both parents and school children, to raise funds enabling them to be in the privileged position to have swimming lessons.” 9 Volume 4, Issue 1 2015

SOUTH CAVE W.I. EVENTS – MARCH & APRIL A hilarious time was had by all at the South Cave Members Meeting on 12 March. Firstly, a draw was made to see who would be the lucky person to attend the WI Centenary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in June, which will be hosted by HRH Duchess of Cornwall. The tickets for this wonderful opportunity are very much prized because only one Member from each WI in the country will be able to attend. A ballot was, therefore, held at the March meeting of every WI, and South Cave was no exception. Each Member was given the opportunity to put her name into a “posh” hat and the draw was made by Mrs Marianne Holmes, the East Yorkshire Federation Chairman, who was visiting South Cave that evening. This was followed by an extremely interesting talk by Pat Kay of Pottery who described why she decided to become a potter. She has made a large plate for South Cave on the occasion of the WI Centenary showing each member’s initials; a very special memento! The Members also enjoyed a “royal buffet” with jam pennies and miniature buns. Every month the “Crafty Ladies” meet in the WI Hall, Church Street, with their different crafts to swop ideas over a cup of tea. Although hosted by the WI, this event is open to all ladies who are interested in any craft. A Coffee Club is also arranged each month where Members and their friends travel to different locations to enjoy socialising over a refreshing drink. In March the venue was Ferens Art

Gallery to view the exhibition, and in April the visit will be to Sandhill Nurseries in Preston. On 26 April a fund raising General Knowledge Quiz was attended by over fifty people from South Cave and surrounding area. The funds raised will help towards the next big project which is the updating of the toilets and kitchen in the Hall. We would like to thank everyone who came and contributed to the evening. The next event will be a Coffee Morning and Book Sale in the Hall, Church Street, on Saturday 9 May. Looking to the future, the Members monthly meeting on 9 April is “All you need to know about Denman” where the speaker will be Mrs Jean Scott. Denman is a large Georgian house set in landscaped gardens in Oxfordshire, named after the first National WI Chairman, Lady Denman. It is the WI’s own college where Members, their families, and non-members, can go to learn different crafts and skills in a relaxing atmosphere. It is also open for bed and breakfast for those wishing to tour the area. Not only do South Cave WI Members meet each month to socialise and listen to interesting speakers, they also have the opportunity to join with other WIs within the East Yorkshire area, for instance, a Fashion Show, Archery, and learning to create a spring hanging basket. If you would like to know more about South Cave WI, Coffee Club or Crafty Ladies sewing Club, then please contact either Cynthia Cray (01430 423733) or Margo Buckley (01430 424411).

South Cave Show

The excitement builds!! What excitement you ask? The SOUTH CAVE SHOW of course, what else could it be?!! We are having the schedules printed at this very moment so they can be in your hands very shortly. Most village shops will have them available from mid May.

All your planning should be over by now and those wonderful little plants should be well on the way to maturity, but there is still time to finish your special article for the handicrafts section – be it woodwork, needlework, painting, drawing or photography. Please don’t overlook the children’s contribution as we always emphasize that they are the long term future of the Show, so cultivate their enthusiasm now and they will be on our Committee before you can say “Jack Robinson”.

We have a very special thank you to mention this year!! Not only have all our sponsors come up trumps once more (for which we offer a genuine thank you) but we have a new, invigorated Garden Centre to thank for our best ever Raffle prize!! You will have to buy a raffle ticket or two to find out just how generous the revitalized Ellerker Lodge Garden Centre has been in supporting the Show. If you haven’t called in there yet, please do so to see just how the Rob and Sarah Hardcastle enthusiasm has transformed what was a potentially wonderful Garden Centre into an exciting new environment. What a transformation and we are pleased to accept their contribution to the ongoing success of the Show!!.

We’ve said enough. It’s up to you now to “ gird up your loins” and make those important decisions about your entries this year.
