Who produces indie? What is the ideology behind it? How can they realize their idealistic goals? Who participates in the indie community? What are the relationships among mainstream popular music, rock music and indie music? In this thesis, I study the production, circulation, and reception of Chinese indie music, with special attention paid to class, aesthetics, and the influence of the internet and globalization. Borrowing Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding/decoding, I propose that Chinese indie music production encodes ideologies into music. Pierre Bourdieu has noted that an individual’s preference, namely, tastes, corresponds to the individual’s profession, his/her highest educational degree, and his/her father’s profession. Whether indie audiences are able to decode the ideology correctly and how they decode it can be analyzed through Bourdieu’s taste and distinction theory, especially because Chinese indie music fans tend to come from a community of very distinctive, 20-to-30-year-old petite-bourgeois city dwellers. Overall, the thesis aims to illustrate how indie exists in between the incompatible poles of mainstream Chinese popular music and Chinese rock music, rephrasing mainstream and alternatives by mixing them in itself.

    18iaspm.wordpress.com 1 2 18th Biennial IASPM Conference Contents Dear IASPM Delegates, It is with great pleasure that UNICAMP (Universidade Estadual de Campinas) will host this important academic event aimed at the study of popular music. With the subject: Back to the Future: Popular Music in Time, the Conference will gather more than 200 researchers from countries of all continents who will present and discuss works aimed at the study of sonority, styles, performances, contents, production contexts and popular music consumption. IASPM periodically carries out, since 1981 – year which was founded – regular meetings and the publication of the works contributing to the creation of a new academic field targeted to the study of this medium narrative modality of syncretic and multidimensional nature, which has been consolidated along the last 150 years as component element of the contemporary culture. We hope that this Conference will represent another step in the consolidation of this field which has already achieved worldwide coverage. For the Music Department of the Arts Institute of UNICAMP, to carry out the 18th Conference brings special importance as it created the first Graduation Course in Popular Music of Brazil, in 1989, making this University a reference institution in these studies. UNICAMP is located in the District of Barão Geraldo, in the city of Campinas – SP. This region showed great development at the end of XIX century and beginning of XX century due to the coffee farming expansion. Nowadays it presents itself as an industrial high-tech center. Its cultural life is intense, being music one of the most relevant activities.

Folk, Folk Rock, Singer-Songwriters Lecture Outline • Traditional folk definition and folk song features • Three different ideas of “folk” • Professionalization of folk in the 1950s and 1960s • Singer-songwriters • Some newer folk artists and sounds Traditional Folk • Oral/Aural transmission • Anonymous composition (and communal composition) • Heavy ideological side to the term – Authenticity claims, ideas that change with time • Some Folk Song Types: – Ballads • Narratives (love, war, heroes, disasters, etc.) – Work Songs • Sailors, fishing, mining, lumber, sewing, etc. – Other • Lullabies, children’s songs, drinking songs etc. Traditional Folk Song Features • Often unaccompanied (a cappella) • Simple melodies (and harmonies, if present) • Usually solo singer or solo instrument – Simple accompaniment – Fiddle, guitar, accordion, whistle, spoons, etc. • Strophic form (AAAAA, etc.) or verse/chorus • Modal (not major or minor, but Dorian, Lydian modes, etc.) • Dancing often accompanies folk music Three different ideas of “folk” music 1. 19th Century – Romantic nationalism – European classical composers use folk melodies for new compositions – Start of song collecting • Turns it into a pop music • Shapes folk culture in terms of what is and isn’t collected • Turns it into a written music (as opposed to purely oral/aural) 2. 1930s and 1940s 3. Folk Revival Period (1958-1965) Folk in the 1930 and 1940s: Three Trends • Folk music starts to be used as a political tool – Beginning of connections with folk and protest music – Folk singers often advocated for social change – Usually left wing positions, socialism, helping the poor or marginalized • Creation of new “folk” songs – These were often written to sound old-timey, but were also often about current events • Some of these new songwriters became celebrities – One of the best examples of these three trends (left wing politics, new songs, and celebrity), was Woody Guthrie… Woodie Guthrie Ex: Woody Guthrie “Do Re Mi” (1940) • Similar to 19th C.
