Milla Berntsen (voice) Performance 2A Recital Performance Space, City, University of London 2 June 2021 4:45PM Keshi, “Drunk” from the album always (2020). Written by Casey Luong (Keshi). Casey Luong, professionally known as Keshi, is a 26-year-old American singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist from Houston, Texas, USA. He began his musical career by sharing his music on Soundcloud, where he eventually gained enough popularity to gain confidence to quit his job as a nurse and fly to New York City to sign with Island Records. He’s best known for his falsetto vocals and textural instrumentals in alternative, indie, and R&B music. This alternative/indie song is about feeling alone and missing being in love. The main character is left by himself while his friends are drunk, which causes him to think about his past lovers. It has a soothing moodiness to it along with a bit of playfulness in its melodramatic kick. I’ve chosen this song because I want to begin this performance by allowing the audience to layback as the song plays with both the high and low register of the voice. Let us take a sip, shall we? The Neighbourhood, “Stargazing” from the album Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones (2020). Written by Jesse James Rutherford (vocalist), Brandon Fried (drummer), Jeremiah Freedman (guitarist), Micheal Margott (bassist), Zachary Abels (guitarist), and Danny Parra. The Neighbourhood are an American rock band that formed in Newbury Park, California, in 2011. They use the British spelling of “neighbourhood” in order to distinguish themselves from a band already using the American spelling of “neighborhood.” Their musical style is described as alternative rock, indie rock/pop, and some elements of electronic, hip hop, and R&B.

  • Living and Labouring As a Music Writer
Cultural Studies Review volume 19 number 1 March 2013 http://epress.lib.uts.edu.au/journals/index.php/csrj/index pp. 155–76 Lawson Fletcher and Ramon Lobato 2013 Living and Labouring as a Music Writer LAWSON FLETCHER AND RAMON LOBATO SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY I attended gigs most weeks while studying at university. I was happy to remain a punter until around May, June 2007. A band called Cog played at The Tivoli. After the show, I read a review on FasterLouder.com.au which was poorly-written and factually incorrect—they mentioned a few songs that weren’t played. It pissed me off. I thought: ‘I can do better.’ So I wrote a review of a show I saw that same weekend—Karnivool at The Zoo—and sent it to the Queensland editor of FasterLouder.com.au … He liked it, and published it. I sent the same review to the editor of local street press Rave Magazine, who also liked it, and decided to take me on as an ‘indie’ CD reviewer; later, I started writing live reviews for Rave, too. ‘Dale’, a 23-year old freelance music writer Like most music critics in Australia, Dale is an autodidact. His entry into a writing career started with ad hoc reviews for websites and local music magazines. Over ISSN 1837-8692 time he built up a network of contacts, carefully honed his craft, and is now making a living by writing reviews and interviews for various magazines and websites. The money isn’t good, but it’s enough to live off—and Dale relishes the opportunity to influence how his readers understand and enjoy the culture around them and contribute to a wider conversation about music.

  • Chiptuning Intellectual Property: Digital Culture Between Creative Commons and Moral Economy
Chiptuning Intellectual Property: Digital Culture Between Creative Commons and Moral Economy Martin J. Zeilinger York University, Canada [email protected] Abstract This essay considers how chipmusic, a fairly recent form of alternative electronic music, deals with the impact of contemporary intellectual property regimes on creative practices. I survey chipmusicians’ reusing of technology and content invoking the era of 8-bit video games, and highlight points of contention between critical perspectives embodied in this art form and intellectual property policy. Exploring current chipmusic dissemination strategies, I contrast the art form’s links to appropriation-based creative techniques and the ‘demoscene’ amateur hacking culture of the 1980s with the chiptune community’s currently prevailing reliance on Creative Commons licenses for regulating access. Questioning whether consideration of this alternative licensing scheme can adequately describe shared cultural norms and values that motivate chiptune practices, I conclude by offering the concept of a moral economy of appropriation-based creative techniques as a new framework for understanding digital creative practices that resist conventional intellectual property policy both in form and in content. Keywords: Chipmusic, Creative Commons, Moral Economy, Intellectual Property, Demoscene Introduction The chipmusic community, like many other born-digital creative communities, has a rich tradition of embracing and encouraged open access, collaboration, and sharing. It does not like to operate according to the logic of informational capital and the restrictive enclosure movements this logic engenders. The creation of chipmusic, a form of electronic music based on the repurposing of outdated sound chip technology found in video gaming devices and old home computers, centrally involves the reworking of proprietary cultural materials.

Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.

  • Recent Critical Praise for My Brightest Diamond's This Is My Hand
Recent critical praise for My Brightest Diamond’s This Is My Hand Favorite Songs of 2014 “‘Pressure’: This baroque pop gem opens with drum corps and woodwinds, tacks on a tribal rhythm breakdown and just goes for it. All the way.” “…one of the most powerful and dramatic voices of the past decade.” “…an ability to cultivate intimacy through flawless, complex production with a beating heart.” “As a musician, Worden (who performs as My Brightest Diamond) builds her songs deliberately and impeccably…words are painted, sounds are sculpted, and the nature of Worden’s voice itself adds dimension—more than a single vocalist usually can. Her wholly enveloping, finely tuned alto sounds by turns forceful, vulnerable, cooing, playful, and endlessly emotive.” “…has a feeling for both the grandeur and the grain, building every sweeping gesture in her music out of a swarm of small details.” The Best of 2014 “…added to her smart, savvy chamber pop the influence of funk and marching bands. Her flawless voice pecks, jabs and floats above a world of rhythm that gives the new music its motion and undeniable heartbeat.” “At times, This Is My Hand all but commands listeners to dance.” “On her new album, This Is My Hand, she continues to reach far and wide with great success, adding marching-band rhythms and funky horns to her mix.” “…sounds like a modern-day Nina Simone…” “…This is My Hand works on a visceral level, conjuring Worden’s intended image of tribal, fireside collaboration through a rich diversity of texture, detail, and tone.” “…successful exercise in percussive, jagged art-pop that explores themes of self-acceptance, sensuality, and community.” “...unique and oddly beautiful.” “…presents an invigorating progression of Worden’s sonic palette…” #3: MBE Producer Ariana Morgenstern’s Top Albums of 2014 “…gorgeous new album…” “This Is My Hand is an album I would recommend to anyone—for exactly all the reasons that it’s hard to write about.

  • Centre and Periphery Spatial Strategies of Storytelling in Herodotus' Histories
Centre and Periphery Spatial Strategies of Storytelling in Herodotus’ Histories Irene Elizabeth May Stone SID# 306192233 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of BaChelor of Arts, Honours in AnCient History 19,553 words 1 Synopsis This thesis explores aspects of Herodotus’ methods of narrative structure. Specifically, I identify what I suggest are ‘spatial’ strategies of storytelling. I argue that Herodotus at first locates and then deploys the ‘centre’ and ‘periphery’ existing in his many and diverse stories. I propose that this enables him to move with ease between these two narratival points and contend that this approach, used as a conduit for imparting various motifs and messages, illustrates his ability to engage in the abstract and demonstrates his organization of the opus into one cohesive whole. Herodotus’ employment of spatial strategies of storytelling ensures the Histories becomes a single interconnected entity rather than a work of disconnected or isolated tales exhibiting qualities both real and intangible. The thesis is divided into three chapters: Chapter One, ‘the Significance of the Nameless’, begins by investigating the use of the undisclosed individual abiding figuratively in the margins of Herodotus’ tales and argues that his use of them as literary tools moves them into closer focus as they emphasize key points and motifs for a listening audience. Chapter Two, ‘the Value of the Outsider’, examines geography in Herodotus’ Histories where the fantastic and peculiar, symbolized by the non‐Greek, reside literally on the edges of his world, and counterbalance the normalcy that dwell at its Greek centre. I also demonstrate the subtle relationship between the two, where both peripheries and inner central points become blurred by Herodotus’ own innate flexibility and his reversal of stereotypical roles.

  • The DIY Careers of Techno and Drum 'N' Bass Djs in Vienna
Cross-Dressing to Backbeats: The Status of the Electroclash Producer and the Politics of Electronic Music Feature Article David Madden Concordia University (Canada) Abstract Addressing the international emergence of electroclash at the turn of the millenium, this article investigates the distinct character of the genre and its related production practices, both in and out of the studio. Electroclash combines the extended pulsing sections of techno, house and other dance musics with the trashier energy of rock and new wave. The genre signals an attempt to reinvigorate dance music with a sense of sexuality, personality and irony. Electroclash also emphasizes, rather than hides, the European, trashy elements of electronic dance music. The coming together of rock and electro is examined vis-à-vis the ongoing changing sociality of music production/ distribution and the changing role of the producer. Numerous women, whether as solo producers, or in the context of collaborative groups, significantly contributed to shaping the aesthetics and production practices of electroclash, an anomaly in the history of popular music and electronic music, where the role of the producer has typically been associated with men. These changes are discussed in relation to the way electroclash producers Peaches, Le Tigre, Chicks on Speed, and Miss Kittin and the Hacker often used a hybrid approach to production that involves the integration of new(er) technologies, such as laptops containing various audio production softwares with older, inexpensive keyboards, microphones, samplers and drum machines to achieve the ironic backbeat laden hybrid electro-rock sound.
