PUNK AESTHETICS IN INDEPENDENT "NEW FOLK", 1990-2008 John Encarnacao Student No. 10388041 Master of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences University of Technology, Sydney 2009 ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisor Tony Mitchell for his suggestions for reading towards this thesis (particularly for pointing me towards Webb) and for his reading of, and feedback on, various drafts and nascent versions presented at conferences. Collin Chua was also very helpful during a period when Tony was on leave; thank you, Collin. Tony Mitchell and Kim Poole read the final draft of the thesis and provided some valuable and timely feedback. Cheers. Ian Collinson, Michelle Phillipov and Diana Springford each recommended readings; Zac Dadic sent some hard to find recordings to me from interstate; Andrew Khedoori offered me a show at 2SER-FM, where I learnt about some of the artists in this study, and where I had the good fortune to interview Dawn McCarthy; and Brendan Smyly and Diana Blom are valued colleagues of mine at University of Western Sydney who have consistently been up for robust discussions of research matters. Many thanks to you all. My friend Stephen Creswell’s amazing record collection has been readily available to me and has proved an invaluable resource. A hearty thanks! And most significant has been the support of my partner Zoë. Thanks and love to you for the many ways you helped to create a space where this research might take place. • An Ideological Analysis of the Birth of Chinese Indie Music
REPHRASING MAINSTREAM AND ALTERNATIVES: AN IDEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BIRTH OF CHINESE INDIE MUSIC Menghan Liu A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill Esther Clinton © 2012 MENGHAN LIU All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis project focuses on the birth and dissemination of Chinese indie music. Who produces indie? What is the ideology behind it? How can they realize their idealistic goals? Who participates in the indie community? What are the relationships among mainstream popular music, rock music and indie music? In this thesis, I study the production, circulation, and reception of Chinese indie music, with special attention paid to class, aesthetics, and the influence of the internet and globalization. Borrowing Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding/decoding, I propose that Chinese indie music production encodes ideologies into music. Pierre Bourdieu has noted that an individual’s preference, namely, tastes, corresponds to the individual’s profession, his/her highest educational degree, and his/her father’s profession. Whether indie audiences are able to decode the ideology correctly and how they decode it can be analyzed through Bourdieu’s taste and distinction theory, especially because Chinese indie music fans tend to come from a community of very distinctive, 20-to-30-year-old petite-bourgeois city dwellers. Overall, the thesis aims to illustrate how indie exists in between the incompatible poles of mainstream Chinese popular music and Chinese rock music, rephrasing mainstream and alternatives by mixing them in itself.

Si te rechazo, me perdonas. Si me equivoco, me acoges.

18iaspm.wordpress.com 1 2 18th Biennial IASPM Conference Contents Dear IASPM Delegates, It is with great pleasure that UNICAMP (Universidade Estadual de Campinas) will host this important academic event aimed at the study of popular music. With the subject: Back to the Future: Popular Music in Time, the Conference will gather more than 200 researchers from countries of all continents who will present and discuss works aimed at the study of sonority, styles, performances, contents, production contexts and popular music consumption. IASPM periodically carries out, since 1981 – year which was founded – regular meetings and the publication of the works contributing to the creation of a new academic field targeted to the study of this medium narrative modality of syncretic and multidimensional nature, which has been consolidated along the last 150 years as component element of the contemporary culture. We hope that this Conference will represent another step in the consolidation of this field which has already achieved worldwide coverage. For the Music Department of the Arts Institute of UNICAMP, to carry out the 18th Conference brings special importance as it created the first Graduation Course in Popular Music of Brazil, in 1989, making this University a reference institution in these studies. UNICAMP is located in the District of Barão Geraldo, in the city of Campinas – SP. This region showed great development at the end of XIX century and beginning of XX century due to the coffee farming expansion. Nowadays it presents itself as an industrial high-tech center. Its cultural life is intense, being music one of the most relevant activities.
