XVI español”. …………………………………………………………………………………………… ….205 Minorías en la España medieval y moderna 7 Minorías en la España medieval y moderna: asimilación o/y exclusión (siglos XV al XVII) Rica Amrán (Université de Picardie Jules Verne, Amiens) Antonio Cortijo Ocaña (University of California) Tenemos el honor de presentarles a continuación el número 4 de Minorías ebooks, en donde se recogen las actividades del Grupo Europeo Las minorías en la España medieval y moderna (siglos XV al XVII), realizadas durante el año académico 2017-2018: las conferencias del Colegio de España de París así como el encuentro anual que realiza el dicho grupo, el cual tuvo lugar en la Université de Picardie Jules Verne de Amiens, (Francia). En esta ocasión, como en las anteriores, se destacan varias líneas de estudio, realizadas por los diferentes especialistas en este campo y que podemos calificar de trabajos de índole literario, histórico e incluso sociológico-antropológico sobre la dicha temática. A diferencia de lo que ocurría en épocas anteriores observamos cómo los especialistas establecen un “diálogo” entre las diferentes disciplinas y esto se pone de manifiesto, una vez más, en este volumen. Destaca también en este el interés suscitado por los estudios sobre la temática mudéjar y morisca; más específicamente notamos la curiosidad que promueve el papel de la mujer (Diana Pelaz), los mecanismos de integración y asimilación (Germán Gamero y Hamza Zekri), el desplazamiento y sentamiento de los dichos grupos (Luis Araus y Juan Rebollo), sus propias historias “entrelazadas” debidos a relaciones familiares, de vecindad o bien de trabajo (Olatz Villanueva), las representaciones musicales (María Isabel del Val Valdivieso) o literarias (David Alvarez), etc, forman parte, en este libro, de la preocupación sobre las dichas minorías. Nuestros colegas también han prestado una especial atención a las crónicas como fuentes de estudio (Rica Amrán e Igor Sosa), al igual que a la documentación que se encuentran en los archivos nacionales y locales que pueden informarnos con más detalles de la presencia de una minoría sobre un determinado territorio (Gloria de Antonio Rubio). Ruth Fine, por su parte, estudiará en estas páginas la “literatura de conversos”. Para finalizar, los libelos sobre nuestra temática han sido analizados por Emilio González Ferrín y, por otra parte, Juan Hernández Franco y Pablo Ortega-del-Cerro estudiaron los estatutos de limpieza de sangre a través de textos de Fernando de Valdés y de Bartolomé Ximénez de Patón. Como podemos apreciar, un volumen ecléctico, pero al mismo tiempo homogéneo, en el que aparecen una serie de temáticas que son el centro de interés de nuestros colaboradores, que ya han aparecido en otros números, al que se juntan otros, nuevos, hasta el momento no tratados. Una aproximación a la participación socioeconómica de las mujeres musulmanas en el Aragón bajomedieval Diana Pelaz Flores (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela1) El reino de Aragón, tal y como en su día lo presenció el viajero alemán Jerónimo Münzer, era en el que se contenía un “mayor número de moros” con respecto al resto de los reinos peninsulares (Münzer 1924, 275). Mantenían en aquel entonces su fama en los oficios del campo, pero también en el ámbito urbano, como artesanos destacados en el trabajo del hierro y la arcilla, en la realización de obras arquitectónicas e hidráulicas, así como en la producción de aceite. Como con frecuencia solía ocurrir en la documentación medieval, Münzer parecía presentar una sociedad musulmana experimentada en diferentes campos del ámbito económico, cuya capacidad como expertos los introducía de lleno en la vida cotidiana de las ciudades y villas cristianas. No obstante, la manera de referirse a la población musulmana, bajo un género masculino con sabor a neutro, impedía tener consciencia de si solo ellos eran distinguidos en el desarrollo de diversas actividades socioeconómicas, o también las mujeres musulmanas participaban de esa especialización artesanal y técnica. Anticipando lo que posteriormente tendremos ocasión de comentar, la presencia de las mujeres musulmanas interactuando en el tejido social cristiano será un elemento que ponga de manifiesto la imbricación económica de esta minoría religiosa, así como el establecimiento de muy diversas relaciones entre personas pertenecientes a ambos credos de manera habitual y cotidiana. Con el fin de dar sentido a esa disparidad de situaciones que pueden encontrarse en la documentación aragonesa, el propósito de este trabajo no es otro que el de tratar de dejar constancia de esa pluralidad de circunstancias que tienen lugar a muy diferentes escalas, como ya hizo en su momento la profesora Ledesma Rubio (1994). Todas ellas nos permitirán reflexionar acerca de los términos en los que se construye un marco de coexistencia que, si bien no puede entenderse en términos totales de asimilación, sí abre la posibilidad a hablar de una cierta normalización en la convivencia, al menos tal como recogen casos puntuales. XIII, XIV: “tornadiços”, moriscos), incluso locales asentados mínimamente arabizados culturalmente. El asentamiento beréber tampoco debe ser despreciado aunque un minucioso estudio debería indagar el especial árabe (con influencia tamazig sin duda y que se refleja en algunos de los topónimos seleccionados) de esta presencia de aproximadamente más de cuarenta años de vigilancia (¿asentamiento técnico?) en nuestros territorios. No hemos querido hacer de esta lista un estudio exhaustivo de los mismos.

    Economic Dynamics in the Malthusian Era: Evidence from the 1609 Spanish Expulsion of the Moriscos∗ Short title: Economic Dynamics in the Malthusian Era Eric Chaney and Richard Hornbeck May 2015 Abstract We investigate economic dynamics in the Malthusian era using the 1609 expulsion of Moriscos from Spain. Sharp population declines in former-Morisco districts were ac- companied by decreased output and increased per capita output. While these short-run results are consistent with standard Malthusian predictions, Malthusian convergence was delayed through 1786 in former-Morisco districts. Archival sources and historical accounts suggest extractive institutions and cultural differences may have contributed to delayed convergence in population and output per capita. This historic episode provides an unusually rich setting to examine Malthusian dynamics, highlighting the potential for sustained differences in per capita output in the Malthusian era. For the millennia prior to the demographic transition, models of economic growth focus on capturing \Malthusian dynamics." In this Malthusian era, technological growth or popu- lation declines are predicted to cause temporary increases in output per capita that dissipate as population grows and the land-to-labor ratio declines. Scholars have generally found empirical support for the traditional Malthusian predic- tions. In a recent contribution, Ashraf and Galor (2011) show that both land productivity and technology were historically related to population density rather than income per capita. Alvarez, Ph.D. In the latter half of the sixteenth century, Spain’s Catholic rulers faced a problem of their own making: having forced Spain’s remaining Muslim population to convert to Christianity, these rulers now suspected that these converts, known as Moriscos, were not faithful to the crown or to their newly-adopted Catholic faith. Decades of political and theological debate concerning the Moriscos’ ensued, only to be resolved when King Philip III, in 1609, finally determined to expel the Moriscos, aiming to rid the Iberian Peninsula of their purportedly destabilizing influence. The decision was not universally popular, and out of concern that the expulsion could be undone, several clerics and men of political influence became apologists for the massive deportation campaign, justifying the expulsion and glorifying its results. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how the treatises of the apologists Pedro Aznar Cardona (Expulsión justificada de los Moriscos españoles), Damián Fonseca (Justa expulsión de los moriscos de España), Marcos de Guadalajara y Javier (Memorable expulsión y justísimo destierro de los Moriscos de España and Prodición y destierro de los moriscos de Castilla hasta la Valle de Ricote), and Jaime Bleda (Crónica de los Moros de España) provide a foundation for the formation of a Spanish national identity based on a shared Catholic faith.

There, the revival of classical Roman culture took place against the backdrop of Islamic civilization. The Renaissance was brought to the city by its conquerors along with Christianity and Castilian law. When Granada fell, many Muslim leaders fled to North Africa. Other elite families stayed, collaborated with the new rulers and began to promote this new classical culture. The Granada Venegas were one of the families that stayed, and participated in the Renaissance in Granada by sponsoring a group of writers and poets, and they served the crown in various military capacities. They were royal, having descended from a Sultan who had ruled Granada in 1431. Cidi Yahya Al Nayar, the heir to this family, converted to Christianity prior to the conquest. Thus he was one of the Morisco elites most respected by the conquerors.

The greater part of it has been written under very peculiar circumstances, such as are not in general deemed at all favourable for literary composition: at considerable intervals, during a period of nearly five years passed in Spain − in moments snatched from more important pursuits − chiefly in ventas and posadas, whilst wandering through the country in the arduous and unthankful task of distributing the Gospel among its children. Owing to the causes above stated, he is aware that his work must not unfrequently appear somewhat disjointed and unconnected, and the style rude and unpolished: he has, nevertheless, permitted the tree to remain where he felled it, having, indeed, subsequently enjoyed too little leisure to make much effectual alteration. At the same time he flatters himself that the work is not destitute of certain qualifications to entitle it to approbation. The author's acquaintance with the Gypsy race in general dates from a very early period of his life, which considerably facilitated his intercourse with the Peninsular portion, to the elucidation of whose history and character the present volumes are more particularly devoted. Whatever he has asserted, is less the result of reading than of close observation, he having long since come to the conclusion that the Gypsies are not a people to be studied in books, or at least in such books as he believes have hitherto been written concerning them.

    1 Barletta, Vincent. Covert Gestures: Crypto-Islamic Literature as Cultural Practice in Early Modern Spain. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2005. 195 pp. ISBN 0-8166-4476-4 If you have never heard of aljamiado literature, you now have a good reason to familiarize yourself with the topic. Vincent Barletta’s book, Covert Gestures, with its fresh, interdisciplinary approach and originally conceived studies, will do a great deal to interest Hispanists in a Spanish literary tradition that has been neglected for centuries. Barletta’s object of study is the literature of the Moriscos, the Spanish Muslims forcibly converted to Christianity after the formal prohibition of Islam in 1502. Written in Castilian or Aragonese but in Arabic characters, aljamiado texts are the final witnesses of Spanish Islamic life that ended with the expulsion of the Moriscos in the early 17th century. Aljamiado literature consists largely of Islamic religious texts, but also includes examples of Romance and Epic. For the scholar of Early Modern Spain, it is the sole voice of Spanish Islam after 1492, one nearly completely silenced by the bonfires of Inquisition. Barletta takes a boldly novel approach to the study of aljamiado and Morisco studies, traditionally the domain of historians and philologists. He combines philology, sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, phenomenology, and literary/cultural approaches in his study of the emergent, socially constructed contexts and meanings of aljamiado texts. His overarching argument is that the literary, social, and ritual uses of aljamiado texts helped to define and preserve the Morisco communities of Early Modern Spain through the construction of a communal sense of time.
