( v ) INTRODUCfION I, the Chairman, Committee on Public Undertakings having been authorised by the Committee to present the Report on their behalf, present tbis Sixty-ninth Re'pIort on Air India. 2. This Report is based on the examination of the working of Air India upto the year ending 31st March. 1969. 3. The Committee took evideDc:e of the representatives of Air India on the 22nd, December, 1969 and 23rd January, 1970 and of the Ministry of Tourism and Ovil Aviation on the 27th January, 1970. The Com- mittee also took evidences of Shri M. S. Oberoi, M.P., Managing Director, Oberoi Inter-Continental Hotel on the 24th February, 1970, Shri 1. R. Bhalla, President 01 the IDdian Institute of Architects on the 26th February, 1970 and Shri Piloo Mody, M.P., Architect on the 14th April, 1970. 4. The material relating to Air India was processed at various stages by the Study Group II on Aviation, Promotional and Developmental Undertakings of the Committee. S. (vii ) CHAPTER I INTRODUCTORY (A) Historical Background The histc)ry of Air-India dates back to the year 1932. In that year, Tata Airlines was started as a department of Tata S:>ns Ltd. On 15th Oetober, 1932, Tata Airlines commenced operations of a weekly airmail service between Karachi and Madras via BOID'~ay and Bellary with two light sirlgle engined aircraft. 1.2. On 29th July, 1946 Air India Ltd. was formed as a public limited company and took over Tata Airlines with all its aircraft, e.quip­ ment, engineering facilities, training personnel, airmail contract etc. 1.3. At the end of 1947, Air-India submitted a scheme to the Gov­ enunent for the dpleratioll of an air-service between India and the United Kingdom. Under this scheme, which was approved by Government Air­ Iadia International Ltd., a new company, was formed in which the Government had 49 per cent shares and the Air-India Ltd. 10 per cent. Under an agreement concluded between Air-India Ltd. and Air-India International Ltd., Air India Ltd. was appointed Technical Managers and principal booking agents in India for Air-India International Ltd. for a period of 10 years. Air-India expanded its flying, engineering and traffic organisations, to meet the requirements of the new com~y. Air­ India International Ud. was formed in 1948 and it inaugurated its first International senice Bombay/London on 8th June of the same year. 1.4. During the five years after the Second World War, the traffic carried by domestic air tran,sport operators showed phenomenal growth, but the financial condition of the industry deteriorated rapidly mainly ~use too many operators had been licensed by the Air-Transport Licensing Board in relation to the route mileage and operating frequencies avaI1able. By 1950, the industry as a whole was operating at a heavy loss and early in 1950, Government decided to institute an !ndependent enquiry into the state of the air transport industry and in February, 1950, they apPointed an Air-Transport Enquiry Committee. The Committee work­ ed out standard costs and recommended a system bf subsidies under which airlines meetfng or lJeating their targets would make a profit and those failing to meet the targets would make a loss.

Abstract Boarding an aircraft, a passenger immediately enters into a different world and encounters a dif- ferent culture. For this reason, airlines are often viewed as national symbols, which is oftentimes strengthened by their names (e.g. Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij, Brussels Airlines, Polskie Linie Lotnicze LOT or Air Aruba). However, there are also airlines whose names were created in a totally different way (e.g. Transavia, Jetairfly or Bingo Airways). In this paper, I will make an at- tempt at providing the answer to the question of how the names of the airlines functioning in Poland and the Dutch-speaking territories were created and what influence the cultures of those countries had on this name-formation process. The major goal is thus to present the outcomes of a semantic analysis of the names of 113 Dutch, Belgian, Surinamese and Polish (both contemporary and non- existent) airlines. The study will also involve tracing the differences and similarities in the history of the formation of the names under analysis. Design/Methodology/Approach: The Analysis of the air travel segment referring passenger transport in Polish airports is based on available literature, analysis and statistical documentation of the air transport market for the years 2010-2018. Findings: The Polish market of air services continues to be in a state of flux. The pace at which changes occur results from a combination of external and internal factors, which precondition the behaviour of air carriers and customers, and the operation of airports. When analysing air transport development forecast, we can see a further upward trend in the number of activities of all market participants. That said, in the near future we should be expecting an expansion of connections, erection of state-of-the-art infrastructure, new air services, and above all a growth of importance of Poland on the aviation map of Europe. Practical Implications: Having regard to data included in the study, without a doubt the Polish aviation market should be considered a strongly developing one, having enormous potential ensuing not only from population mobility different EU standards, but also from demographic potential of Poland, gradual wealth gaining of the Polish society, and Poland’s geographic location.

    Business Strategies in Polish regional aviation in the last century Stefan Chabiera Department of Strategy and Management Methods, Faculty of Management, Computer Science and Finance, Wrocław University of Economics The world aviation started in the year 1783, when, for the first time in history, a balloon of French brothers Montgolfier, filled with hot air, performed its first flight. However, balloon flights, due to their maneuvering limitations, have not initiated any significant development in passenger aviation. In 1903, more than 100 years later, the Wright brothers (Americans), made the first controlled airplane flight, powered by an internal combustion engine. In connection with a significant interest in the military potential of air transport, the development of aviation accelerated during World War I. In the late 1920s, Englishman Frank Whittle designed a jet engine, which ten years later was installed for the first time in a German airplane, Heinkel He 178. Earlier, in February 1919, the world's first airline, Deutsche Luft-Reederei, launched the Berlin-Weimar line. In the same year, in March, Lignes Aériennes Farman airlines launched the first international line connecting Paris with Brussels. First of the above mentioned line has been later rebranded into German Lufthansa, and the other one into French Air France. First airline in Polish lands, Aero-Targ, was established in 1924 for the Poznań Fair. It operated for a week between Poznań, Warsaw, and Gdańsk, from May 28 until June 5, 1924, over this time transporting about 400 passengers on 58 flights in six Junkers F 13 planes. However , the project turned out to be unfeasible.

Two periods of their development deserve particular attention: the in- terwar period, in which the communication aviation was born, and the time after 2004, when its rapid expansion was noted. The establishment and development of the communication aviation of the Second Polish Republic was strongly associated with the statist policy aimed at modernizing the state. This is evidenced by the construction of airports in Warsaw, Gdynia, Katowice, Łódź and Vilnius, whose activities have helped to integrate the country after the years of partitions. In People’s Poland, civilian communication was based on a network of military airports, which was supplemented with a new airport in Gdańsk-Rębiechów. Large areas of the north-eastern voivode- ships were excluded from air connections and timid attempts to overcome these disproportions only appeared in the Third Republic of Poland in the form of airports in Lublin and Radom. The fourfold increase in the number of passengers served by Polish airports in 2004–2016 was an unquestionable phenomenon influenced by the Open Sky policy.
