Article Pottery technology as a revealer of cultural and symbolic shifts: Funerary and ritual practices in the Sion ‘Petit-Chasseur' megalithic necropolis (3100–1600 BC, Western Switzerland) DERENNE, Eve, ARD, Vincent, BESSE, Marie Abstract Research on the third millennium BC in Western Europe has tried for decades to understand the mechanisms of the large-scale cultural changes that took place during its course. Few studies have focused on technological traditions, although these are key to considering continuities and disruptions. In this article, we used pottery technology to approach the evolution of social and symbolic practices at a major megalithic site in Switzerland: the necropolis of Sion, Petit-Chasseur (Valais). We reconstructed technological traditions for the Valaisian Final Neolithic (3100–2450 BC), the Bell Beaker Culture (2450–2200 BC), and the Early Bronze Age (2200–1600 BC). This was done using the chaîne opératoire approach, analyzing fashioning methods, finishing treatments, and decoration. The sequence of these technological traditions, along with architectural and historical aspects, confirms that significant breaks happened during the use of the site with specific traits coinciding with the emergence of the Bell Beaker Culture and then again with the Early Bronze Age. Die Landschaften Des Rhônetal-Nordhanges Zwischen Sierre Und Fully
DIE LANDSCHAFTEN DES RHONETAL-NORDHANGES ZWISCHEN SIERRE UND FULLY Heinrich Gutersohn Das Mittelwallis kann unter starker Generalisierung in drei Gebiete gegliedert werden: die Niederung des Rhonetales; die gegen Norden ins Rhonetal mündenden Täler; der Rhone¬ tal-Nordhang. Die drei Landschaften unterscheiden sich vor allem in der Großorographie, aber auch in den restlichen Naturgrundlagen, so daß in den Kulturlandschaften bedeutende Unter¬ schiede bestehen. Unsere Skizze beschränkt sich auf einen Teil des Rhonetal-Nordhanges. Der Nordrand des Gebietes fällt zusammen mit der Wasserscheide der Berner- alpen im Norden und der der Waadtländeralpen im Westen, dadurch auch mit der po¬ litischen Grenze des Wallis gegen Bern und Waadt. Vom Schwarzhorn (3105 m) im Bereich der Raspille zieht sie sich über Wildhorn (3248 m), Oldenhorn (3123 m), Les Diablerets (3209m), Grand Muveran (3051m) nach der Dent de Mordes (2969 m) von hier aus südwärts, um mit dem Sporn von Les Follateres ins Rhoneknie bei Martigny zu stoßen. Zwischen Wildhorn und Diablerets ist diese Grenzlinie um etwa 12 km von der in rund 500 m fließenden Rhone abgerückt, so daß sich für die Halde ein mittleres Gefälle von 23% ergibt. Nur der kleine, südlich der Dent de Mordes liegende Teil dieses Gebirgszuges zählt noch zum kristallinen Aiguilles Rouges-Massiv, im übrigen aber ist das ganze Gebiet aus Teilen der helvetischen Decken gefügt (Mordes-, Diablerets-, Wildhorn- Decke), die sich aus den Gesteinen des alpinen Tertiärs - Lias, Dogger, Kreide, Flysch - aufbauen, und welche den Quersattel zwischen Aiguilles Rouges- und Aarmassiv ein¬ nehmen. Die genannten Gesteine unterschiedlicher Resistenz, außerdem zahlreiche Brüche, Bergstürze, Rutschungen und Moränendepots bedingen eine vielfältige orogra¬ phische Gestaltung der Landschaft, welche sich in starkem Gegensatz zu den einheitli¬ cheren Gehängen östlich der Raspille kundtut. -
