  • Dr. Priyanka Sees Her 'Mymedwall' As Way to Engage Community
Brevard Business BBN News Vol. 31 No. 49 December 9, 2013 $1.00 A Weekly Space Coast Business Magazine printed in Brevard County, Florida since 1984 Dr. Priyanka sees her ‘MyMedWall’ as way to engage community By Ken Datzman Social media, which started slowly, has invaded most business sectors over the past few years. Now it is growing as a force in health care, and consumers are driving the activity in that arena. Companies and organizations are following the lead of consumers, in what looks to be a new movement in a huge business segment that hasn’t changed much over the decades. Online platforms, mobile technologies, and their associated applications seem poised to shake up the multitrillion–dollar health–care industry in the years ahead. In a recent survey by hospital market research firm YouGov Healthcare, 57 percent of users revealed that their social–media connections with a hospital strongly affected their decision to use a particular facility for treatment. Health care in general is starting to move into the consumer– engagement era. The American Diabetes Association has tens of thousands of people following its updates on Facebook, and the American Cancer Society page has throngs of followers as well. Those are just two of many examples. There is an emerging consensus in health–policy circles that informed and engaged consumers are uniquely positioned to play an important role in improving the quality of care that the U.S. delivers to patients. “Engagement is the key and it has to be on the local commu- nity level,” said board–certified internist and businesswoman Geetha Priyanka.

As television must always create its spaces and places on the screen, what, then, is the significance of the varying emphases as well as the commonalities constructed in televisual high school settings in UK, US, and Japanese television shows? This master’s thesis considers how fictional televisual high schools both contest and construct national identity. In order to do this, it posits the existence of the televisual school story, a descendant of the literary school story. It then compares the formal and narrative ways in which Glee (2009-2015), Hex (2004-2005), and Ouran koukou hosutobu (2006) deploy space and place to create identity on the screen. In particular, it examines how heteronormativity and gender roles affect the abilities of characters to move through spaces, across boundaries, and gain secure places of their own. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract ii Table of Contents iii Acknowledgement v Introduction Orientation 1 Space and Place in Schools 5 Schools on TV 11 Schools on TV from Japan, 12 the U.S., and the U.K.

  • Staging the Self Performance/Performativity As Affirmation of Subjectivity in Teen Gay Film
Advertentie Kate Norbury and John Stephens Staging the self Performance/performativity as affirmation of subjectivity in teen gay film In the films considered in this paper a principal character’s engagement with theatres and stages enables him to express his creativity and intelligence as a form of personal empowerment, and the process functions in turn as a strategy to gain audience approval for gay characters. We argue that the shift in cultural perception represented in this trend has been mediated by a delicate and subtle combination of performativity and comedy. While gay characters have appeared in film throughout its history, the first gay teens did not appear until the latter years of the twentieth century, when a new direction began to emerge with Hettie Macdonald’s Beautiful Thing (1996), Simon Shore’s Get Real (1998), and David Moreton’s Edge of Seventeen (1998). Subsequent films have been concerned to explore the inner depths of gay teenagers, a recent direction perhaps prompted by the late twentieth-century reclamation of agency and resistance after the poststructural critique of the subject. The breakthrough film, and arguably the first that positively affirms young gay male identities, remainsBeautiful Thing. Of key relevance for our concerns here is the grounding of subjective agency in the interests of the two gay protagonists: Jamie watches old- fashioned Hollywood musicals and idolises popular gay icon Lucille Ball, whereas Ste is the soccer star on his team. Over the next decade, such interests in forms of performativity – artistic or sporting – become a key element in representations and valorisations of gay subjectivity,1 as the path- breaking ‘coming-out’ teen films from the late 1990s have been followed by 1 This development has not yet received scholarly attention, although to some extent Elizabeth Gould’s work is a forerunner.

  • The Symbolic Meaning of Blood in Stephen King's Carrie Author
Örebro University Department of Humanities Education and Social Sciences English Bloody Horror! The Symbolic Meaning of Blood in Stephen King’s Carrie Author: Rebecka Fransson 19890221 C-Essay Fall 2015 Supervisor: Dr Anna Linzie Abstract In the novel Carrie by Stephen King, there is an abundance of symbolism. There are glaring references to religion and young adult rituals of freeing yourself and King hint at traditional folkloric fantasy, such as Cinderella. This essay focuses on the motif of blood in Carrie, its symbolic meaning and its connection to the Gothic. In the novel, King deploys this symbolism in three key parts. The analysis in this essay indicates that blood symbolizes power, repentance and identity in Carrie.
