CASTING NOTES This is the authorized LARGE-CAST VERSION of The Marvelous Wonderettes, which combines the first acts of both The Marvelous Wonderettes and Wonderettes: Caps & Gowns into one show, and features a flexible ensemble cast. The Marvelous Wonderettes (Glee Club Edition) is a cotton-candy colored, non-stop pop musical. Act one takes the audience to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where we meet the Wonderettes—four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts and voices to match. We learn about their lives and loves accompanied by the girls performing classic 1950’s pop . The girls are joined onstage by the Springfield High School Glee Club (the Chattering Chipmunks). The girls should sing in a bright, old-fashioned pop-belt style—no modern trills and thrills. Listen to the original recordings of these songs for style. The Original Cast Recordings of The Marvelous Wonderettes and The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps & Gowns contain all of the music in this version of the show (both recordings available on , iTunes, or through Stage Rights), and are great resource materials when teaching and learning the music. The Wonderettes are real best friends, and their concerns, struggles, hopes and dreams must be sincere. They may argue, but that makes their friendships all the more meaningful and fulfilled.

CHANGES & ALTERATIONS This is the authorized LARGE-CAST VERSION of The Marvelous Wonderettes, which combines the first acts of both The Marvelous Wonderettes and Wonderettes: Caps & Gowns into one show. Each act is approximately 45 minutes in length. Alternatively, you may choose to produce either act one only or act two only as a single evening of theater. If you choose to present only act one, there is a different ending. You must request this option from Stage Rights if you only intend to produce act one. Act two does not require any modifications to be presented on its own.

APPROXIMATE RUNNING TIME Act One: 45 Minutes / Act Two: 45 Minutes

TIME & PLACE 1958, Springfield High School Gymnasium, USA.

CHARACTERS CINDY LOU (17) knows she is the prettiest girl at Springfield High. She knows she will be named and acts out against her best friend Betty Jean when things don’t go her way. MEZZO SOPRANO BELT– sings lead line on most songs. MISSY (17) is the over-achiever of the group. Very controlled, very concerned that everything at the prom turns out wonderful and perfect. Head of the prom decorations committee; and absolutely smitten with her music teacher. Her best friend is Suzy. SOPRANO— WIDE RANGE, VERY HIGH VOCALS AND BELTS THROUGHOUT THE SHOW. BETTY JEAN (17) is the class clown, tomboy, always vying for attention with Cindy Lou, her best friend. It’s also possible that Betty Jean wants to be with Cindy Lou herself, but just doesn’t even know what those feelings really are. Cindy Lou steals Betty Jean’s boyfriend away, which causes a lot of the friction at the prom. ALTO WITH A STRONG LOW RANGE. SUZY (17) is the happy-go-lucky and slightly ditzy blond one of the group, and best friends with Missy. Always smiling and giggling, nothing ever seems to bother Suzy. In love with the lighting operator, she is completely surprised when named prom queen. MEZZO ALTO, WITH BIG BELT. This role requires an excellent part singer and comedienne. GLEE CLUB: The rest of the Glee Club can be comprised of as many girls (and boys) as desired. Most of the story is told by the four leaders, with the Glee Club singing and dancing with them throughout. PATTY (16) is the reigning junior varsity super chipmunk, and the de-facto leader of the Glee Club. She can sing any of the three parts assigned to the Glee Club. If appropriate, the stage director or musical/vocal director may give various solos in the larger group numbers to members of the GLEE CLUB to give everyone a chance to shine. The best numbers for sharing solos are: • “Mr. Lee” (the section of solos that are not MISSY’s) • “Teacher’s Pet” (all except MISSY’S solos) • “Born Too Late” (create solos from full group number) • “V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N” • “Rock at the Hop Medley” • “Mr. Touchdown” • “Personality” • “Springfield High Alma Mater” • “” (Make sure the Wonderettes get to lead the final number)

She loves dancing, cheering, singing, drive-in movies, and boys (not in that order). Platform: World Peace. Quote: “I hope to shatter the pre-conceived image of prom queen and, when chosen, will use my intelligence, poise, grace and beauty to bring happiness to those who are less fortunate than I.” Pink is her favorite color. BETTY JEAN REYNOLDS is proud to have a date for the prom, and she can’t believe that Johnny finally got the nerve to ask her. Accomplishments: Proud member and assistant choreographer of the Varsity Song Leaders (Go Chipmunks!), grand-champion bubble blower at last year’s state fair (“Can you believe it?!”), cub reporter for The Chipmunk Chronicle (where she exposed last year’s lunch room milk scandal), and president of the A.V. Club Appreciation Society. Suzy loves dressing up, and having friends over to play records in her basement rec room. She’s very good with scissors and glue, and helped Missy put together all of the decorations and banners for tonight’s prom. Quote: “L-O-V-E-That-Spells-Love!” Blue is her most favoritest color ever. JUDY CARTER is happy to finally get to attend a school prom— having missed both her freshman and junior proms due to unforeseen circumstances (“Thank you, Nurse Hathaway!”). Accomplishments: Past member of the Varsity Song Leaders (member of last year’s 3rd Place State Champion Squad), 1st runner- up for Miss Dairy Darlin’ at the 1957 State Fair, served as the School Nurse TA for 3 years at Springfield High, and voted “Most Likely” for the 1957-58 school year by her fellow classmates in The Chipmunk Chronicle’s Year-End ‘Gathering of the Nuts.’ Judy loves shopping, makeup, high heels, and all her fellow Prom Queen nominees. THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES: GLEE CLUB EDITION – PRODUCTION 1

ACT I 1958, Springfield, USA. We are in the Springfield High School gymnasium, and the stage is set for the 1958 Senior Prom, complete with banners, streamers, and signs. There is a large platform up center with steps on each side and along the front; this is the ‘stage’ that has been set up for tonight’s performance. The steps are used as risers by the Glee Club. Behind, there are cascades of pastel streamers descending from an arched portal of hearts with banners that read: “Class of 1958 Super Senior Prom,” & the theme of the prom: “Marvelous Dreams.” There are swinging doors leading into the Boys’ and Girls’ locker rooms on either side, as well as two decorated tables of refreshments. There are four microphones on stands with boxes on them. Somewhere on the wall of the gymnasium should be a classic framed portrait of the President of the United States (Eisenhower), perhaps with a flag nearby. This will help set the time period for the audience. NOTE: The script delineates between WONDERETTES (just the four leads), or ALL (which includes the entire GLEE CLUB). At first blackout, the cast enters in the dark as we hear:

SONG: OVERTURETTE

PRINCIPAL (V.O.): Students of Springfield High School, this is Principal Varney. Welcome to your 1958 Super Senior Prom! MISSY (whispering): Careful! SUZY (kicking step): Whoops! PRINCIPAL (V.O.): What a great evening we’re having. And to top it all off, we have some terrific entertainment for you. So hang onto your corsages, and welcome to the stage the Springfield High School Glee Club, led by your very own Marvelous Wonderettes!

SONG #1: MR. SANDMAN

LIGHTS UP on CINDY LOU, BETTY JEAN, MISSY and SUZY (the Wonderettes) at the microphones, dressed in formal prom gowns. MISSY wears cat-eye glasses; SUZY chews gum throughout. Behind them are members of the GLEE CLUB in choir formation.

WONDERETTES: GIVE HIM A LONELY HEART LIKE PALLIACHI AND LOTS OF WAVY HAIR LIKE LIBERACE MISSY (quickly, sharply to the others): Breathe! They all take a small, loud breath, letting it out during the following. ALL: MR. SANDMAN, SOMEONE TO HOLD (SOMEONE TO HOLD) WOULD BE SO PEACHY BEFORE WE’RE TOO OLD PLEASE TURN ON YOUR MAGIC BEAM MR. CINDY LOU: And we’re— ALL: The Wonderettes! THEY make a noise (“Hmm”) as they strike their Wonderettes pose. MISSY (whispering): Marvelous. Marvelous… Each of the girls reacts. CINDY LOU: Oh that’s right! We’re… WONDERETTES: The Marvelous Wonderettes. They point to the “Marvelous Dreams” banner, then strike their pose again, each move accompanied by the noise. Hhmm, Hhmm! SUZY: They got it. I think they got it.

4 THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES: GLEE CLUB EDITION – PRODUCTION

MISSY sets up a microphone down front, calling back toward the GLEE CLUB. MISSY: Glee club roll call! One by one, the members of the GLEE CLUB step forward to the microphone as they introduce themselves (ie. “I’m Patty,” “I’m Margaret”), returning to their riser position when finished. They can use their actual names, or names evocative of the fifties. If someone’s name is too modern, alter it to fit the style and era. However, there is a PATTY. CINDY LOU (at the solo mic): We’re super proud of this year’s Glee Club. SUZY jumps to the mic, pushing CINDY LOU aside. SUZY: Better known as Springfield High’s Chattering Chipmunks! BETTY JEAN: Go Chattering Chipmunks! The WONDERETTES look back as the entire GLEE CLUB makes a noise together as THEY pose. GLEE CLUB: Hhmmm! The GLEE CLUB and the WONDERETTES immediately follow the GLEE CLUB pose with Chipmunk faces and noises out to the audience. Throughout the show, whenever they make Chipmunk noises, they raise their hands to their faces (like paws) and make chipmunk faces, gnashing their teeth. ALL (as chipmunks): (Fvt, Fvt, Fvt, Fvt) MISSY comes to the center mic. MISSY: For those who didn’t read Ms. McPherson’s school bulletin this week… BETTY JEAN: Nobody read it. CINDY LOU and SUZY shush BETTY JEAN. CINDY LOU & SUZY (quick and tight): Sshhh. MISSY: We’re super proud to present this year’s junior varsity Chipmunk Champion, and Wonderette-in-training, Miss Patricia Fuller! EVERYONE applauds as PATTY comes forward to the mic. PATTY: Thank you. (to Missy) It’s Patty. MISSY makes a little face. MISSY: Patricia is better. MISSY ‘shoos’ PATTY back to the Glee Club.

THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES: GLEE CLUB EDITION – PRODUCTION 5

BETTY JEAN crosses to MISSY. BETTY JEAN (to Missy): What’s next? MISSY (loud stage whisper to Betty Jean): Lollipop. (even louder stage whisper to everyone) Lollipop! This action happens very quickly: The GLEE CLUB move to their choir positions, all while whispering “Lollipop” to each other, here and there. PATTY gets MISSY’s bag with the lollipops and sets it by the stage. SUZY gets out her pitch pipe. MISSY resets the mic, then points to SUZY. SUZY blows the first note for “LOLLIPOP.” MISSY pushes BETTY JEAN out of the way, then SUZY pushes BETTY JEAN out of the way. Now in her place at the end, BETTY JEAN needs to hear the note again from SUZY. SUZY plays a double-note, takes out her gum, then plays one note. MISSY taps on CINDY LOU’s shoulder to turn around and begin.

SONG #2: SUGAR & SPICE MEDLEY

They turn their lollipops around to reveal the letters L-O-V-E. However, they’re in the reverse order, spelling E-V-O-L. PATTY notices the misspelling, and whisper-shouts to MISSY. PATTY: Missy! Missy! It spells evil! MISSY ad-libs as she quickly rearranges the WONDERETTES as the GLEE CLUB laughs quietly (and under their breath). MISSY: Oh! Wrong order, girls! When all in place, with lollipops turned backwards… Pop it, pop it...! They then reveal the proper order of the lollipops, popping again. SUZY: It spells love. MISSY gathers the lollipops, passing them to PATTY to put away. They got it. I think they got it. CINDY LOU: A special thank you to my boss, Mr. Johnson, down at the Springfield Sweet Shoppe for allowing us to use these marvelous lollipops from his window display.

THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES: GLEE CLUB EDITION – PRODUCTION 9

BETTY JEAN: Thank you, Mr. Johnson! MISSY: Yes— you’re the sweetest! CINDY LOU: A super big thank you to the Springfield High Glee Club. GLEE CLUB makes the chipmunk noise together, then poses again with a noise. GLEE CLUB (as chipmunks): (Fvt, Fvt, Fvt, Fvt) (with pose) Hhmmm! MISSY: We would really like to thank Mr. Ellison and his 6th Period Chipper Chipmunk Band for playing the terrific music tonight. SUZY: Yes! And we should mention that Phil Wackerman will finally be getting his Eagle Scout Music Merit Badge for learning to play the drums! BETTY JEAN: Way to go, Phil! Drummer should play something funny/wacky on the drums. THEY all make Chipmunk faces at the band and applaud. ALL (as chipmunks): (Fvt, Fvt, Fvt, Fvt) CINDY LOU: So as I said before, we’re The Wonderettes… MISSY (whispering): Marvelous. Marvelous… BETTY JEAN also jumps in to correct CINDY LOU. BETTY JEAN: Marvelous! CINDY LOU: Oh, that’s right. The Marvelous Wonderettes. They all quickly point to the banner then strike their pose, accompanied by two distinct noises (“Hmmm, Hmmm”). MISSY: A big, huge, amazing, very special thank you to our very special song leader leader, Mr. Lee!
