I encourage all since my last report, there has been a lot… members to come along and find out why this event has been so popular for so long. Congratulations to all those Members, Crew, & friends that Then there’s the 2018 MTYC Four Points Race on April 21st. competed in the 50th Marlay Point Overnight Race. From those 24 we entered 3 Noelex 25 teams into the LIND- Take a deep breath & just keep sailing…. SAY DACK TROPHY for a team of three yachts from one class. See you on the water soon. & 6 teams into the ADAM BRINTON TROPHY for a team of Doug Whitby three yachts from one club. The Trailable Yacht Division’s Traveller Series is well under way with 4 of the 6 events completed; The Around French Island Race hosted by Warneet Yacht Club, The inaugural Pelican Race (that replaces the old Queenscliff to Geelong) hosted by Geelong Trailable Yacht Club, The Around Sunday Island Race (rescheduled to January due to weather) hosted by Port Albert Yacht Club The 2018 Victorian Trailable Yacht & Sportsboat Cham- pionships co-hosted by Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron & MTYC. 'I thought it was great'.” “The GTYC conducted a great event, the website and pre/post race information, participation, turnout, weather, post race BBQ and a great venue to stage the event, nothing was hard, from a competitor perspective.” “The close- ness of the competition was a reflection of the level of competition attracted.” Mark Mclellan Jibsheets March 2018 Around Sunday Island Race The Port Albert Yacht Club’s Around Sunday Island Race was held on Sat- urday 13 January 2018 after post- ponement on 2nd December 2017 due to an extreme weather forecast. Nine boats competed in Div 2 (7 No- elex 25, 1 Castle 650, 1 Seaway 25) and five in Div 3 (Timpenny 670, Ulti- mate 18 DK, Explorer 16, Cole 23 and Sabre 22). Weather conditions were blustery with occasional rain squalls as the fleet embarked on a clockwise circumnavigation on an ebb tide, with reduced visibil- ity and confused seas whipped up towards the Port Albert entrance. Tainui had a commanding lead but a fouled rudder created opportunity for those following who then tacked along the Cobblers Bank sandbar in the southern Snake Channel to avoid the tidal stream. Glimpses of sunshine encouraged crews to launch spinnakers heading past the PAYC western turning buoy, but dark clouds and squalls returned in the northern Midge Channel. There were some interesting moments on Halcyon as the spinnaker halyard jammed, caution led others to drop spinnakers, while No Excuses forged through like a freight train at 10 knots to overtake Tainui and Halcyon. Silver Shadow’s lead was unassailable, as the fleet progressed back up the Port Albert Channel, with a spread of fin- ishing times from 3.5 to 4.5 hours. Not so fortunate were the Div 3 fleet, where most took 5.5 to 6 hours, and the stragglers caught more squalls and driving rain that disoriented them. However, Juniper took a punt on the inside passage between Cobblers Bank and Sunday Island, which paid off in avoiding the tidal stream with a quick circumnavigation of around 3.5 hours. In future it will be recommended that PAYC install two Snake Channel passing marks called Alex 1 and Alex 2, which will prevent such nefarious tactics! Basically the ARSIR was a character building exercise in survival for skippers and crew, with stories later told back in the clubhouse as we sampled the renowned PAYC hospitality and then listened to a presentation by local artist and historian.

A more competitive group of owners started adding sail area and stripping out accommodation from their boats. Most people’s perception of a sports boat is a trailerable sailing boat with masses of sail area. While this was the genesis of sports boats there has been a gradual change. It became evident that sports boats needed to form their own separate group. ASBA was founded in 2007 by Cameron Rae, Mark Roberts and Richard Parkes. They wanted a more scientific handicapping system than had been employed in the past. In 2008 the Sportsboat Measurement System (SMS) was put in place by a body independent to ASBA. It was created by the same people who formulated the Australian Measurement System (AMS) in 1997. Sports boat racing has flourished across Australia under the ASBA banner, with the SMS rule encouraging high performance designs without the penalties that existed under other systems. Large asymmetrical spinnakers, in particular, are not penalised as harshly in the rating as the working sail area is, so that is why you see the sports boats with clouds of sails downwind. In Australia sports boats are defined as being between 5.8m and 8.5m in length and no more than 3.5m wide including hiking racks.

    Volume 30 No. 4 September 2010 Mary Nye Meyers,Editor The mission of IOBG is to recognize past commodores of the international yachting community and unite them in order to promote the highest ideals of yachting, and preserve its customs and traditions through social, educational and humanitarian programs. In an earlier report I wrote it was my hope our critically motivated internal analysis might be quickly and amicably resolved, so that more of our time could be spent on boating and water related activities. Our recent membership vote of approval of a number of revised and/or rewritten By-laws should enhance our opportunity to become more deeply involved in the many issues facing the boating community. As if on cue, I have recently received two phone calls asking the extent of IOBG's knowledge and involvement in certain water related issues. For example, one caller asked the extent of our knowledge concerning the established governmental water pollution standards of Puget Sound in Washington State. A second caller asked if any governmental standards have been established concerning oil contamination in the Gulf of Mexico. In fielding these two questions, it became crystal clear to me how little IOBG was involved in any fashion with either governmental or political machinations regarding water or boating issues. To live up to our Mission Statement, we should make an effort to the best of our ability, to alert members to these issues. Hopefully we will have an informative article in each issue of the LOG Newsletter, which would be interesting, as well as educational.

Last season was one of consolidation, we managed to reduce some of our major expenses through good planning and others by just plain nagging. Yachting South Australia reduced their fees by 50% which was by far our greatest reduction of any one item. Last year we changed insurance companies which has saved us some more money. Our member ship has stayed pretty much the same. We see the 2016-17 year as a growth year. The club needs to attract new members. There are some exciting things close on the horizon. Watch this space. The Boating Industry of Australia will be their annual on water boat show right in our back yard on the 15 th and 16 th of October . It will be a great way to show off the safe waters we sail in. School Team sailing is back and bigger than ever. There are more schools competing and more teams in each school. For those who are not familiar with the term Team Sailing please refer to Note 3 in this program. Our involvement with our bigger boat mates over the fence will continue to grow. On Wednesday nights during daylight saving we open our club for the PASC to run their twilight racing. These are an exciting spectacle and all members are invited to watch the racing which is usually between the North Arm and the grain berth.
