Picturesque Saratoga Sailing Club- Brisbane Waters, NSW Central Coast Pg 2 EDITORIAL: NOTE: Please copy, attach and email all of your friends who can then email the editor to receive their free monthly eTillerscope newsletter. To all members or ex members, please consider writing a one or two page history outlining your interactions with present or past TS16’s including your sailing history. Most members would love to know a few things about what brought YOU and your family to the class. I look forward to lots of emails and pictures/stories. This months edition features Neil and Annette Bilsborough who have graciously sent me lots of photos and a brief history about their involvement in TS16s which is extensive! I hope you enjoy the read and again thanks very much to Annette Bilsborough for supplying this unedited cronology. I have attached as many pictures as I thought would fit into a typical 5MB article but I will include more of Neil’s ‘Sinister’ build pictures in future editions. I’m sure you’ll all agree he’s a true craftsman and he and Annette’s dedication to the TS16 class is a credit to them and their family. I have also attached an unedited copy of a past Tillerscope magazine from September 1999 highlighted to avoid confusion. Paul (Ed) ****************************************************************************************************************************************** Where the inspiration to build a Hartley TS16 came from: Annette Bilsborough Neil listened to his father Bert and his neighbor talk about Hartley’s for many years over a few beers. They talked about building a Hartley boat, his father wanting to build a Hartley TS16 and the neighbor going on to build a Hartley Half Cabin Speed boat. It was this inspiration for Neil to achieve one of his father’s wishes to actually build a Hartley TS16. He was also impressed with the good family and social appeal of the Association during the earlier years for our children. The dream began in 1977. Neil had built his first TS16! On the first day of launching the new Hartley TS16 “Lollipop 1073” at Kogarah Bay, he was approached by Syd Wood, a foundation member of the Hartley TS16’s. Syd wanted to know what Neil’s intentions were for sailing on a regular basis. Having no crew ourselves, as our children were very young at this stage, after much discussion, the agreement was made for Neil to sail on “Sweet Sixteen 777 (now Jackpot) with Syd at Drummoyne Sailing Club. This lasted for a few years until Syd moved up to Lake Macquarie. Syd made arrangements for Neil to continue sailing at Drummoyne with Errol Coates on Pineapple. This lasted for some 16 years and included sailing on Pineapple then Choko (now Deception 999) and finally Rhubarb. Over more than a 20 year period and until present, Neil has been an active National and State committee member including as State and over the last few years until now as Assistant State Measurer. He has also been a National Championship Committee Member for a minimum of 3 National Championships. He has competed in National Championships and State Championships for more than 23 years since 1978 until present. Over the last few years Neil became a “Life Member” of the Hartley TS16 Association. During the 23 years of competing at Nationals, the family has made many lifelong friends interstate and locally. Since 1994 Neil has built: 1994 Sinister 1516 1997 Xtremely Sinister 1558 2013 Ultimately Sinister 1616 Neil is in the process of building his 5th Hartley TS16 (watch this space) Pg 3 Neil, assisted by our granddaughter Ebony, produced a “You Tube” video of “The building a Hartley TS16 – Ultimately Sinister”. The video captures the whole process of building the boat and has been viewed by over 10,000 interested people including people who have gone on to build a Hartley themselves. Neil’s main focus is to promote the class and he gains joy from mentoring others in the building process and also with giving advice. either face to face, via phone or email and is recognized as the “go to person”. Notably, it was in March 2006 that Australian sailing has received significant investment and structured support, which has enabled it to further grow into a high performance professional sport. As an encouragement for our young sailors, Michael stated that sailing champions have attained their goals in different ways: some have been born with talent; others have worked consistently hard. • Sept 2010 LOG.Cwk
Volume 30 No. 4 September 2010 Mary Nye Meyers,Editor The mission of IOBG is to recognize past commodores of the international yachting community and unite them in order to promote the highest ideals of yachting, and preserve its customs and traditions through social, educational and humanitarian programs. In an earlier report I wrote it was my hope our critically motivated internal analysis might be quickly and amicably resolved, so that more of our time could be spent on boating and water related activities. Our recent membership vote of approval of a number of revised and/or rewritten By-laws should enhance our opportunity to become more deeply involved in the many issues facing the boating community. As if on cue, I have recently received two phone calls asking the extent of IOBG's knowledge and involvement in certain water related issues. For example, one caller asked the extent of our knowledge concerning the established governmental water pollution standards of Puget Sound in Washington State. A second caller asked if any governmental standards have been established concerning oil contamination in the Gulf of Mexico. In fielding these two questions, it became crystal clear to me how little IOBG was involved in any fashion with either governmental or political machinations regarding water or boating issues. To live up to our Mission Statement, we should make an effort to the best of our ability, to alert members to these issues. Hopefully we will have an informative article in each issue of the LOG Newsletter, which would be interesting, as well as educational.

Last season was one of consolidation, we managed to reduce some of our major expenses through good planning and others by just plain nagging. Yachting South Australia reduced their fees by 50% which was by far our greatest reduction of any one item. Last year we changed insurance companies which has saved us some more money. Our member ship has stayed pretty much the same. We see the 2016-17 year as a growth year. The club needs to attract new members. There are some exciting things close on the horizon. Watch this space. The Boating Industry of Australia will be their annual on water boat show right in our back yard on the 15 th and 16 th of October . It will be a great way to show off the safe waters we sail in. School Team sailing is back and bigger than ever. There are more schools competing and more teams in each school. For those who are not familiar with the term Team Sailing please refer to Note 3 in this program. Our involvement with our bigger boat mates over the fence will continue to grow. On Wednesday nights during daylight saving we open our club for the PASC to run their twilight racing. These are an exciting spectacle and all members are invited to watch the racing which is usually between the North Arm and the grain berth.
