Netscape And Yahoo! To Launch Netscape Guide By Yahoo!, An Internet Information And Navigation Service Two Industry-Leading Internet Companies Bring Users Free, New Customizable Service Using Latest Netscape Communicator and 'Constellation' Netcasting Features MOUNTAIN VIEW, and SANTA CLARA, CA -- (March 19, 1997) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP), and Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) today announced the signing of a strategic business agreement that will enable Yahoo!® to run a high-profile Internet information navigation service which showcases the best sites on the Web. The service will be called Netscape Guide by Yahoo! and will use the rich media capabilities of Netscape Communicator™ client software and is expected to use future 'Constellation' Netcasting technologies. The personalized guide is designed to provide users with a central comprehensive source of sites, news and other valuable services on the Web. Netscape Guide by Yahoo! will be accessible through the Netscape Internet site and from the toolbar of Netscape Communicator by clicking on the "Guide" button. The navigation service will provide users with central access to eight of the most popular information categories on the Web. "Netscape Guide by Yahoo! will provide the more than four million daily visitors to the Netscape Internet site with the ultimate guide to the Web," said Jennifer Bailey, vice president of electronic marketing at Netscape. "Netscape Guide by Yahoo! takes advantage of Yahoo!'s vast expertise in Internet navigation and its extensive relationships with thousands of content providers. In addition, by incorporating the features of Netscape Communicator software, Netscape Guide by Yahoo! will enable users to enjoy a rich experience as they locate the online information and resources they need." Under the agreement, Yahoo! will be responsible for the programming, production, operations and ad sales of Netscape Guide by Yahoo! along with the What's New, What's Cool, People and Yellow Pages on Netscape's Internet site. This agreement brings together Netscape's popular Internet client software with Yahoo!'s expertise in Internet navigation and advertisement sales along with its core set of community tools. "Netscape Guide by Yahoo! is a rich resource for the growing Netscape community," said Jeffrey Mallett, senior vice president of business operations at Yahoo! Inc. "We are pleased to work with Netscape to provide a convenient and unique place for visitors to the Netscape Internet site to access sites, news and other Web services. The Guide will provide a high-value branded advertising platform for our clients." Users of Netscape Guide by Yahoo! will be greeted with a Front Page containing default configuration of content that features specific information categories and banner advertising. Netscape Guide by Yahoo! will enable users to customize the service by selecting a preferred configuration of content and specific topics of interest to serve as their Front Page for subsequent visits. Users can update and change their customized service as often as they like. Netscape Guide by Yahoo! will offer users a choice of eight of the most popular information categories: Business, Personal Finance, Entertainment, Sports, Travel, Computers & Internet, Shopping and Local Information. Each category will include such features as a directory listing of topical Web sites; news feeds specialized content and advertisements. This global guide to the Internet, which will present industry leading content providers, will enfold and replace Netscape Destinations. The numerous content providers in Destinations today will be eligible to participate in Netscape Guide by Yahoo!. Utilizing the features of Netscape Communicator software, Netscape Guide by Yahoo! content providers can create exciting layouts with dynamic HTML including frames, layers, absolute positioning, Java and JavaScript. Netscape Guide by Yahoo! will also offer support for dynamic information delivery, site samplers and extensive search features. The new service is scheduled to launch during the second quarter of 1997. Users with previous versions of Netscape Navigator will be able to access the service by clicking on the Destinations button or from Netscape's home page at http://home.netscape.com. Netscape Communicator, an open email, groupware, and browser suite, includes dynamic HTML, the next-generation of HTML that moves beyond static text and graphic images to interactive Web pages and live business applications. In addition to making Web page design easier and more precise, dynamic HTML enriches the Web experience by allowing users to interact with multimedia content. 'Constellation', being developed as a component of Netscape Communicator, is an easy-to-use, powerful workspace that will enable users to customize, focus, and automatically receive the information they care about. The Constellation technology will be tightly integrated with Netscape Communicator components. Yahoo! Inc.
