ABSTRACT NUR HIDAYAH. 2018 Thesis of English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. “Improving Reading Comprehension of Descriptive Text by Using Pictorial Poster”at SMP Negeri 1 Minasate’ne Under the supervision of Nunung Anugrawati and Ratu Yulianti Natsir. This research aimed to find out the way to improve students’ reading comprehension by using Pictorial Poster as Media The research was conducted at The Second Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Minasate’ne. This research used a pre- experiment method by using reading test.The procedure of data collection covered pretest, treatment and posttest. Total sample of this research was 22 students the researcher taught about the pictorial poster in each treatment of descriptive text in the class. The result of the research shown there were In pre-test the students’mean score of main idea in pre-test 21,3 to post-test 41 the mean score of supporting details pre-test is X1 = 18,7 and the mean score of post-test was X2 = 32,2. From the result we find that the improvement of the students’ completeness score also by looking the score of t-test of main idea 4.83 and supporting details 10.98 was greater than t-table value 2.080. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that the reading comprehension of the second grade SMP Negeri 1 Minasate’ne had improvement by using pictorial poster of descriptive text. Tradisi adalah kebiasaan sosial yang diturunkan dari suatu generasi ke generasi lainnya melalui proses sosialisasi. Tradisi menentukan nilai-nilai dan moral masyarakat, karena tradisi merupakan aturan-aturan tentang hal apa yang benar dan hal apa yang salah menurut warga masyarakat. Tabuik adalah suatu warisan budaya berbentuk ritual upacara yang berkembang di Pariaman sejak sekitar dua abad yang lalu. Tabuik merupakan upacara atau perayaan mengenang kematian Husain, tetapi kemudian berkembang menjadi pertunjukan budaya khas Pariaman setelah masuknya unsur-unsur budaya Minangkabau. Bagi masyarakat Pariaman upacara ini tidak menjadi akidah (kepercayaan yang menyangkut dengan ketuhanan atau yang dipuja), pelaksanaannya hanya semata-mata merupakan upacara memperingati kematian Husain. Bagian yang dianggap penting dari perayaan tabuik adalah pelaksanaan pestanya yang oleh masyarakat Pariaman disebut batabuik atau mahoyak tabuik. Perayaan tabuik terdiri atas ritus-ritus atau rangkaian upacara yang dimulai dari ritus maambiak tanah ke sungai, maambiak/manabang batang pisang, maatam, marandai, maarak jari-jari, maarak saroban, tabuik naiak pangkek, maoyak tabuik, hingga ditutup dengan ritus mambuang tabuik ke laut. Ritus-ritus itu diwujudkan dalam bentuk prosesi-prosesi (arakan). Rentang waktu yang digunakan untuk prosesi-prosesi itu berkisar antara 10 hingga 14 hari pada awal bulan Muharram, bahkan dapat saja terjadi lebih dari itu.

    THE POLITICO-CULTURAL DIMENSION OF TABUIK PIAMAN PERFORMANCE IN WEST SUMATRA A s r i l Doctoral student, Graduate School, Indonesia Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta Abstract This article aims to discuss about performance of Tabuik Piaman from the perspective of cultural policy of the West Sumatra Province and Pariaman District. Tabuik Piaman as a ritual tradition of Muslims Syi’ah has long been a cultural heritage and colossal ritual by Muslims Sunni community in Pariaman district. For the Pariaman people, Tabuik Piaman ceremony has become a space expression of social and cultural community. Each execution of the ceremony is their responsibility. However, the potential and strength of this ceremony was not much gotten serious attention by the government, especially before the early 1980s. In the period of the mid-1960s to late 1980s, Tabuik Piaman just become an arena of influence scrambling by political parties to attract their supporters, then Tabuik Piaman encountered the period of tragic - labeled as "black sheep" riots trigger. Consequently, execution of the ceremony is often discontinued. Although in the mid-1960s the West Sumatra provincial government issued policy concept about “self-esteem restoration”, in order to rebuilding cultural identity especially Minangkabau, and local traditions in each region. In the early 1980s, the government of Pariaman viewed Tabuik Piaman performances as a very positive opportunity to be revived. Government tried to make a policy to create Tabuik Piaman as media publications, promotion, and agent of "identity" as well as a carrier of economic and tourism sectors. Then, the Tabuik Piaman ceremony was changed to tabuik tourism.

The Tabuik culture in Pairaman City, West Sumatra is one of the creations of the development process of human life. Tabuik is a culture that is held every 10th of Muharram, this Tabuik ceremony aims to commemorate the death of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W, namely Hussein bin Ali. This research method is library research with five stages, namely topic selection, source collection, verification, interpretation: analysis and synthesis, then writing. The Tabuik ceremony certainly has a meaning and value that is contained in the ceremony. The meaning of the Tabuik culture itself can be seen from the form of the Tabuik itself, such as the burqa is a symbol of an angel carrying the body of Husein flying, the peak of the tabuik has two meanings, namely as a news carrier and as a protector for all Muslims. The values of the culture are a picture of a combination of custom and religion, so that the values that exist in Tabuik are still not far from religious values.
