THE TRANSFORMATION OF TRADITIONAL MANDAILING LEADERSHIP IN INDONESIA AND MALAYSIA IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION AND REGIONAL AUTONOMY by Abdur-Razzaq Lubis1 THE NOTION OF JUSTICE IN THE ORIGIN OF THE MANDAILING PEOPLE The Mandailing people, an ethnic group from the south-west corner of the province of North Sumatra today, went through a process of cultural hybridization and creolization centuries ago by incorporating into its gene pool the diverse people from the archipelago and beyond; adopting as well as adapting cultures from across the continents. The many clans of the Mandailing people have both indigenous as well as foreign infusions. The saro cino or Chinese-style curved roof, indicates Chinese influence in Mandailing architecture.(Drs. Z. Pangaduan Lubis, 1999: 8). The legacy of Indian influences, either direct or via other peoples, include key political terms such as huta (village, generally fortified), raja (chief) and marga (partilineal exogamous clan).(J. Gonda, 1952) There are several hypotheses about the origin of the Mandailing people, mainly based on the proximity and similarity of sounds. One theory closely associated with the idea of governance is that the name Mandailing originated from Mandala Holing. (Mangaraja Lelo Lubis, : 3,13 & 19) Current in Mandailing society is the usage 'Surat Tumbaga H(K)oling na so ra sasa' which means that the 'Copper H(K)oling cannot be erased'. What is meant is that the adat cannot be wiped out; in other words, the adat is everlasting. Though numerous analyses have focused upon the immediate economic and political impact of the conflict and the tsunami upon Acehnese society, few studies have investigated the continuation of traumatic experience into the “aftermath” of these events and the efforts that Acehnese communities have made towards trauma recovery. My dissertation examines the significance of Acehnese performance traditions—including dance, music, and theater practices—for Acehnese trauma survivors. Focusing on the conflict, the tsunami, political and religious oppression, discrimination, and hardships experienced within the diaspora, my dissertation explores the ii benefits and limitations of Acehnese performance as a tool for resisting both large-scale and less visible forms of trauma. Humanitarian workers and local artists who used Acehnese performance to facilitate trauma recovery following the conflict and the tsunami in Aceh found that the traditional arts offered individuals a safe space in which to openly discuss their grievances, to strengthen feelings of cultural belonging, and to build solidarity with community members. -

Abstracts The existence of adat (customary law) in Indonesia becomes a source of value for the survival of the nation. Each region in Indonesia has different adat that can be used as a reference for the form of governmental system in Indonesia. The 1945 Constitution has recognized the existence of adat government that consisting of various forms of adat that have been adopted long before the 1945 Constitution existed. The existence of adat cannot be separated from national and Islamic values. This research was conducted to find out form of adat institution in Aceh and how the integration of such adat governance in local government system based into national law. Thus, to achieve the objectives, this study was conducted by normative juridical research method with historical approach and comparison with other indigenous peoples in Indonesia. Keywords: constitution; adat government; Aceh INTRODUCTION Adat (custom) in Indonesia is an integral part of the national constitutional system. Adat became the forerunner of the existence of this state since the character of the nation is formed from customs that have been built by each region. Adat in every region in Indonesia varies, usually in accordance with the values left by the ancestors in the region. -

Customs and traditions have clung so hard so to be abolished. The ulama seeks to advise the public to follow the Islmanic Shari’a, but the fact is many people who do not want to listen to that advice, until a religious figure Tuanku Nan Renceh initiate new ideas to change people’s traditions with harsh and radical teachings.This study aims to determine the background (biography) Tuanku Nan Renceh, to know the culture and traditions of Tilatang Kamang society before and after the entry of the renewal, to know the cultures deviant who eradicated by Tuanku Nan Renceh, to know mindset Tuanku Nan Renceh about the culture to deviate, to find out what Tuanku Nan Renceh efforts in making changes to the system and habits of the people who have strayed of religious norms and customs norms prevailing in society.The theory used in this study is religious purification movement theory, the theory of religion, forms of movement of religious purification, and cultural theory. This study uses historical and documentary research. Data collection techniques in this study is the literature, documentation, comparative studies will then be deduced.The results showed that Tuanku Nan Renceh is known as the man who led a religious movement in Tilatang Kamang to change the tradition and culture of the people who deviate. -

BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. Latar Belakang Masalah Masyarakat Indonesia merupakan masyarakat yang berasal dari berbagai macam latar belakang, tidak hanya dari berbagai macam agama seperti Islam, Kristen, Hindu, Buddha, Konghucu dan juga aliran kepercayaan. Tetapi masyarakat Indonesia merupakan masyarakat yang juga memiliki berbagai macam tradisi, adat istiadat dan juga kebudayaan sebagai ciri khas masing-masing wilayah mereka. Kebudayaan adalah keseluruhan dari kehidupan manusia yang terpola dan didapatkan dengan belajar atau yang diwariskan kepada generasi berikutnya, baik yang masih dalam pikiran, perasaan, dan hati pemiliknya (Agus, 2006: 35). Sebagai peninggalan yang diwariskan oleh leluhur dan nenek moyang kepada masyarakat yang sekarang, kebudayaan masih terus dilestarikan dengan cara melaksanakan apa yang telah diwariskan. Tentu saja kebudayaan itu memiliki makna dan tujuan yang baik serta mengandung nilai- nilai serta norma sehingga kebudayaan itu masih terus dilaksanakan hingga sekarang. Manusia dan kebudayaan merupakan hal yang tidak dapat dipisahkan. Sekalipun manusia sebagai pendukung kebudayaan akan mati namun kebudayaan yang dimilikinya akan tetap ada dan akan diwariskan pada keturunannya dan demikian seterusnya (Poerwanto, 2000: 50). Dengan beragamnya kebudayaan yang dimiliki oleh Indonesia maka dari kebudayaan 1 2 inilah diharapkan akan tercipta suatu masyarakat yang memiliki hubungan baik dalam kehidupannya serta tidak memandang dari latar belakang agama, ras, suku dan sebagainya. Dari sinilah manusia menjadi bagian penting dalam lestarinya kebudayaan tersebut. Dalam hal ini, masyarakat apabila dilihat dari segi budaya memiliki peran penting dalam pelestarian budaya. Dimana unsur- unsur yang dimiliki oleh kebudayaan ada tiga hal yakni; norma, nilai, keyakinan yang ada dalam pikiran, hati dan perasaan manusia. Kemudian tingkah laku yang dapat diamati dalam kehidupan nyata dan hasil material dan kreasi, pikiran, dan perasaan manusia (Koentjaraningrat, 2000: 179-202). -

H.r Soebrantas km. 12,5 Simpang Baru Pekanbaru 28293- Telp/Fax0761-63277 ABSTRAK Kebudayaan adalah kompleks yang mencangkup, pengetahuan, kepercayaan, kesenian, moral, hukum, adat-istiadat, dan lain kemampuan serta kebiasaan oleh manusia anggota masyarakat. Tradisi adalah kebiasaan sosial yang diturunkan dari suatu generasi ke generasi lainnya melalui proses sosialisasi. Tradisi menentukan nilai-nilai dan moral masyarakat, karena tradisi merupakan aturan-aturan tentang hal apa yang benar dan hal apa yang salah menurut warga masyarakat. Tabuik adalah suatu warisan budaya berbentuk ritual upacara yang berkembang di Pariaman sejak sekitar dua abad yang lalu. Tabuik merupakan upacara atau perayaan mengenang kematian Husain, tetapi kemudian berkembang menjadi pertunjukan budaya khas Pariaman setelah masuknya unsur-unsur budaya Minangkabau. Bagi masyarakat Pariaman upacara ini tidak menjadi akidah (kepercayaan yang menyangkut dengan ketuhanan atau yang dipuja), pelaksanaannya hanya semata-mata merupakan upacara memperingati kematian Husain. Bagian yang dianggap penting dari perayaan tabuik adalah pelaksanaan pestanya yang oleh masyarakat Pariaman disebut batabuik atau mahoyak tabuik. Perayaan tabuik terdiri atas ritus-ritus atau rangkaian upacara yang dimulai dari ritus maambiak tanah ke sungai, maambiak/manabang batang pisang, maatam, marandai, maarak jari-jari, maarak saroban, tabuik naiak pangkek, maoyak tabuik, hingga ditutup dengan ritus mambuang tabuik ke laut. Ritus-ritus itu diwujudkan dalam bentuk prosesi-prosesi (arakan). Rentang waktu yang digunakan untuk prosesi-prosesi itu berkisar antara 10 hingga 14 hari pada awal bulan Muharram, bahkan dapat saja terjadi lebih dari itu. -

Fight-Dancing and the Festival Paul H. Mason
Paul H. Mason completed his PhD in cultural anthropology at CONTRIBUTOR Macquarie University (2012) under the supervision of Professors Greg Downey and John Sutton. He has conducted ethnographic fieldwork with arts communities in Indonesia and Brazil, religious minorities in India and Brazil, and tuberculosis patients in Australia and Vietnam. With support from Macquarie International, the National Department of Education in Indonesia, and the Australia Netherlands Research Collaboration, he has also conducted archival research in Australia, Brazil, Holland, and Indonesia. His research on martial arts has been published in Global Ethnographic, Cultures-Kairós, and Inside Indonesia, and he recently coedited The Fighting Art of Pencak Silat and its Music with Dr Uwe Paetzold (Robert Schumann University of Music, Düsseldorf), published as part of Brill’s Southeast Asian Library Series. This article looks at two festivals in coastal locations in Indonesia and Brazil with a close inspection of performances of fight-dancing included within both festivals.
