Tempe Public Library Create-It Projects:

Zipper Pouch

Materials:

2 Pieces of fabric 9 inches x 5 inches(outside)* 2 Pieces of fabric 9 inches x 5 inches(lining)* 1 , 9” long or longer. (If it’s longer we can shorten it)

*These sizes are a suggestion. You can make any size pouch you like, just make sure the outer and lining fabrics are the same size and your zipper is longer or the same length as one side of the pouch.

Instructions:

Step 1: Lay one piece of your outer fabric with the right side up.

Step 2: Place the zipper right side down on top of the outer fabric with the edges lined up.

Step 3: Use a zipper foot and sew the zipper to the fabric.

Step 4: Spread out the fabric so that the right side of the fabric and the right side of the zipper are both facing up, hiding the raw edge created by the you made in step 3.

Step 5: With right sides together place the second piece of outer fabric on top of the zipper. If you’re doing this correctly the zipper teeth should be concealed and the wrong side of your fabric should be what you see.

Step 6: Sew the zipper to the fabric. You should only be sewing through the second piece of outer fabric and the zipper. Do not sew through both piece of outer fabric.

Step 7: Place your outer fabric and zipper so that the outer fabrics are laying right sides together and the wrong side/bottom of the zipper is face up.

Step 8: Place one piece of your lining fabric right side facing down on the zipper so that the edges line up. Sew a straight line just as you did with the outside fabric. You will be sewing through one layer of outer fabric, the zipper and one piece of lining fabric.

Step 9: Repeat step 7 with the second piece of lining fabric.

Step 10: Move your pieces so that the zipper is in the center, the right side of the outer fabric are each on top of one piece of lining fabric.

Step 11: Press each piece so that they lay flat and crisp, especially near the zipper. Be careful not to let the iron melt the coils if you are using a plastic zipper.

Step 12: a straight line going through both layers of fabric on each side of the zipper so that the fabric does not get caught in the coils.

Step 13: Unzip the zipper halfway.

Step 14: Move your outer fabrics so they are right sides together, repeat with the lining fabrics.

Step 15: Fold your zipper in half with the coils pointing towards the lining. Place a on each end and in the center to keep it in place.

Step 16: Mark a four inch hole at the bottom of the lining; this is so we can turn the bag out later.

Step 17: Sew with a 5/8 inch seam around the entire edge of the pouch except for the place you marked in Step 15.

Step 18: Clip the corners.

Step 19: turn the bag inside out so that the right sides are not on the inside for both the outer fabric and the lining.

Step 20: At the hole in your lining fabric press the so that it’s inside the bag.

Step 21: Sew a ¼ inch seam across the bottom of your lining pieces.

Step 22: Push the lining fabric inside the outer fabric.

Step 23: Do a victory dance, you’ve just made a zipper pouch!
