Mr Burns Mr Burns This year we are saying Goodbye and Good Luck to a number of members of staff. On behalf of the whole school community thank you all for your hard work and your contribution to our school. You will all be missed at Hillhead and we wish you lots of luck in the new chapter of your life. On the following slides we have a message for each of you from your departmental/faculty colleagues. Mr Burns Mr Burns Mr Burns retires today after 27 years at Hillhead High School. He will be greatly missed by all of his colleagues in the Support for Learning Department and across the wider school community. A very modest person, Mr Burns does not like any fuss but he has been an excellent role model for so many of us with his constant support of young people in his care and his tireless commitment to equality, diversity and social justice. His kindness, patience and encouragement has helped so many of our pupils to flourish in their learning. On behalf of the school, I would like to thank him for all his work over so many years and to wish him a long and happy retirement. Mrs McAlaney Mr Burns • We want to wish Andy Burns a very happy, healthy and relaxing retirement. Andy has been an integral part of Hillhead High School. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to him, but we wholeheartedly wish him well in this new chapter. Andy spent years creatively inspiring pupils within the Art Department before moving on to become a stalwart in Support for Learning. His contribution to the lives of young people with additional support needs has been immeasurable and his calm and reassuring manner will be missed by pupils and colleagues alike. Andy typifies our school value of integrity: he is an honourable professional who listens carefully to others and unreservedly believes in equality and providing high quality support to all pupils. A strong commitment to social justice has been at the heart of Andy’s teaching practice and he is a role model to pupils and colleagues. Andy, we will miss you and hope you now get to spend your time painting and going for long bike rides! Miss Ghani Best wishes in your new school. You have been a vital cog in the Biology and Science team and you will be missed by colleagues and pupils at Hillhead High School. St Andrew’s Secondary’s gain is certainly our loss and we wish you every happiness and success in your new post. Mr Cochrane This is such an unusual way for your probation year to finish however we are delighted that you have secured a post at Holyrood Secondary. Andrew brought a lot of fun, energy and enthusiasm to the drama department and he will be missed by staff and pupils. His Drama MTA and Drama club were attended by many keen theatre lovers and there was always something exciting in the making. Andrew helped to lead the Ghost Tour and direct the staff panto and of course played one of the lead roles; Snotrag! Andrew will be an asset to the drama department in Holyrood and we wish him all the best in his new role. Thank you for all your efforts this year and please keep in contact with us all. Miss Shaw I will not be alone when I say a massive thank you to Catrina who will be leaving us for Govan High. Catrina has been a real asset to the Geography department, faculty and to the school. She has brought her passion for geography to the pupils of Hillhead and inspired many to take up and continue to study in school and beyond. The new topics and subjects Catrina has introduced have laid the foundations for a bright future in the department. In the last three months Catrina’s online teaching has been wonderfully supportive of all her pupils providing inspiring and challenging resources. Catrina has also been a lead teacher in the MTV program demonstrating excellent teaching practice and implementing new strategies. Across the school Catrina has championed many great causes including Climate Change and brought it to the forefront of our school priorities including bring back Hillhead’s Green flag status. Catrina has also led the resurgence of the Eco Committee who continue to shape our schools contribution to many wider issues. The whole school wishes you Good Luck in your career I know we will be working with you again in the not so distant future. Miss Corr Emma, Thank you so much for your hard work since joining the department! You settled in so quickly and adapted to the timetable challenges and also covering across the school. We are so thrilled for your news on getting a permanent job with Glasgow! We wish you all the success at Notre Dame and can’t wait to hear which school you will be at permanently! Miss Eyre Jane, Thank you so much for all your hard work this year! Thank you for all your work with your Sports Leaders class and providing opportunities for them outside of Hillhead! Thank you for your work with your Higher class and I know they will go on to do very well in their presentation year. We know they have thoroughly enjoyed having you as their teacher. We will keep you updated on their progress! Wishing you all the best, thanks for being an excellent member of the team this year! The Glasgow TCommonwealth Games was the starting gun that sounded Scotland’s stage-left appearance onto the world stage, with people from lands far and wide flocking to our nation to see what we had to offer, and they weren’t disappointed. For two weeks our country became an international hotspot – the perfect storm of contrasting cultures and integrating nationalities. Our city’s experience during this time can only truly be illustrated through one encounter I had during the Games: I was enjoying a nice walk through a particularly rainy Glasgow Green, before finding myself face-to-face with an athlete from the Malawian team: half- draped in his own country’s flag and clearly plied plenty with some of our country’s good whiskey, he was belting out “Scotland the Brave” at the top of his lungs, whilst also managing to take some selfies with the locals.

  • In the Community
In the community The Community Coaching Initiative (Registered charity SC037774) Schools coaching and links The club has been providing cricket coaching in its local community under the auspices of the "Community Coaching Initiative" since 2002. Working with Glasgow Council (now Culture & Sport Glasgow) a pilot scheme was run in two local schools and, since then, the Initiative has grown each year so that, by 2013, twelve local schools took part. The core part of the coaching carried out in schools is weekly sessions carried out by the club's coaches on school premises. 1 / 9 In the community 2007 saw Richmond Park [Primary] School - a school for youngsters with physical impairment - joining the initiative and youngsters there enjoying cricket for the first time. 2011 saw cricket "taster" sessions delivered at the all-girls Craigholme School, another first. Another way the club and charity link with local schools is by providing the club's ground - "Shawholm" - for use by schools for home matches, free-of-charge. Schools enjoying this facility are Bellahouston Academy, Hillpark Secondary School, Belmont School, Eastwood High School, St. Ninian's High School, Williamwood High School and Shawlands Academy. In addition the ground is made available to the Glasgow Schools Cricket Association annually, and is used by them for the semi-finals and Finals Days of their age-group inter-schools competitions. Cricket festival days The culmination of primary schools coaching can often be a festival day at Shawholm that sees the schools competing against each other. In addition, the club, under the umbrella of the Initiative and in partnership with the WDJCU, regularly hosts "Kwik Cricket" festivals.
