The Community Coaching Initiative

(Registered charity SC037774)

Schools coaching and links

The club has been providing cricket coaching in its local community under the auspices of the "Community Coaching Initiative" since 2002. Working with Council (now Culture & Sport Glasgow) a pilot scheme was run in two local schools and, since then, the Initiative has grown each year so that, by 2013, twelve local schools took part. The core part of the coaching carried out in schools is weekly sessions carried out by the club's coaches on school premises.

2007 saw Richmond Park [Primary] School - a school for youngsters with physical impairment - joining the initiative and youngsters there enjoying cricket for the first time. 2011 saw cricket "taster" sessions delivered at the all-girls , another first.

Another way the club and charity link with local schools is by providing the club's ground - "Shawholm" - for use by schools for home matches, free-of-charge. Schools enjoying this facility are Academy, Secondary School, Belmont School, Eastwood High School, St. Ninian's High School, Williamwood High School and Academy. In addition the ground is made available to the Glasgow Schools Cricket Association annually, and is used by them for the semi-finals and Finals Days of their age-group inter-schools competitions.

Cricket festival days

The culmination of primary schools coaching can often be a festival day at Shawholm that sees the schools competing against each other. In addition, the club, under the umbrella of the Initiative and in partnership with the WDJCU, regularly hosts "Kwik Cricket" festivals.

Universities and colleges partnerships

2010 saw the start of what's were partnerships with further education establishments. Poloc Cricket Club hosted Glasgow Caledonian University ("GCU") Cricket Club's home matches throughout the 2010 season, an arrangement that - with GCU CC not otherwise having access to a grass wicket - was continued and built upon in the following years. 2010 also saw the cricket club at College link up with Poloc, making use of the new all-weather astro-turf net bays that were installed that year, whilst - in 2014 - Strathclyde University's cricketers played their home games at "Shawholm".

Community coaching

In addition to the work in local schools, the club's Community Coaching Initiative also works with other community groups in providing sports coaching in and around the club's locality. Most often this work is part of a larger initiative being carried out in the community. Examples have included work with Settlement and Integration Network, the Ibrox Cluster's "Community Sports Club", participation in locals schools' health-awareness weeks, delivering "taster" sessions at Anchor Boys classes and working with Glasgow Sport (formerly Culture & Sport Glasgow) in its city-wide programme of activities.

In addition to its own programmes, very often organised with the assistance of Active Schools Co-ordinators, the club has also been a partner in the South Glasgow Cricket Summer Squad Community Coach. Along with Weirs CC, Clydesdale CC, Cricket Scotland and East Council, the club part-funded a Community Coach, Robbie Stewart, who delivered introductory cricket sessions in Glasgow City and schools during schools' summer term in 2012. Repeated again in 2013, sessions being delivered, this time, by Community Coach Jeetinder Berman, the Summer Squad project extended its work into more schools.

Funders

The Community Coaching Initiative is only possible because of the ongoing generous financial support of a number of local charities, trusts and companies. A full list of the Initiative's supporters can be found on the Sponsors and partners page of the website - the club is enormously grateful for their support, support that means there is absolutely no charge made to any youngster when attending an Initiative event.

More information about the initiative and its work can be provided - to find out more, please contact Keith Young whose contact details are on the Contact us page of the website.

Community Coaching Initiative staff

All the work of the initiative is carried out by appropriately qualified coaching staff with the assistance of appropriately supervised coaching assistants. All coaches have been appropriately "Disclosure Scotland" checked, Poloc Cricket Club is an enrolled body under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme, and the Initiative's work is carried on as an integral part of the club's youth activities, recognised by Cricket Scotland's " TOPClub &qu ot; accreditation. Further recognition, this time from Glasgow Sport (formerly Culture & Sport Glasgow), is reflected in its awarding the club's development work " Clubmark " status.
