Diese seltene, noch ziemlicli alterthumliche Miinze ist be- reits bei Buratschkow, KaiajiorS etc., Petersburg 1884, Taf, XIX, 21 abgebildet Unsere immer noch kleine Reihe cler Silber- munzen von Panticapaeum ist jetzt, fast ausnalinislos durch Au- Uiiufe der letzten Jahre, auf zwolf Stiick gestiegen. Samothrac e. Pallaskopf 1., am Helm Schlange; Nacliahmung der Goldmiinzen Alexanders des Grossen. Rf. ^AMO MHTPr2NA[xioc] Thronende Kybele 1. mit Modius, in der R. Schale, die L. auf das Scepter stiitzend. Unter dem Thron ein kleiner sitzeuder Lowe 1. M, 8. 16,94 Gr. Taf. I, 1. Diese sorgfaitig gearbeitete Miinze von hohein Relief und vortrefflicher Erlialtung ist die erste Tetradrachme von Sanio- thrake, welche wir in diesem einzigen Exemplar kennen lernen; bisher sind nur die ausserst seltenen Didrachmen und zalilreiche Kupfermiinzen bekannt, alle mit demselben Typus: Pallaskopf und sitzender Kybele, mit abgeklirzten Magistratsnamen, dabei auch unser Metronax als MHTP^NA, MHTPi2fM und IV1HTP^2 auf I^idrachmen und Kupfermunzen (s. meiue Beschreibnng der an- tiken Munzen des Berliner Museums I, p. 284 Nr. 2, 8 imd 9). ^iese gesammte Miinzreihe mit Pallaskopf und Kybele und der Stadtnamenabkiirzung ^AMO geliort, wie der Styl und die zum Tlieil auf der Silber- und Kupferreihe identisclien Magistratsnamen beweisen, derselben Zeit und Emission an, sicher nach Alexander. Die Erwerbnngen des Konigl. Miinzkabincts bis i, April 1888. 3 Dcr Styl spricht etwa fiir die Zeit des Lysimacbiis, was init Head's Anuahine (Guide to tlie jDrincipal gold and silver coins of the ancients, British Museum 1881 p. 75), dass Samotlirake nach Lysimaclius' Todc 179 v. Olir. seine Autonomic erlaugt, selir "wolil stimmt. Die tlironende Kybele auf der Rtlckseite unscres Tctradrachmons hat entschiedene Ahnlichkeit mit der Pallas der Tetradrachmen des Lysimachus. Damastinm. Apollokopf mit Kranz r. Rf. TiNilN Dreifuss auf einer Basis, worauf eiu undeutlicher Beamtenuamc steht. M. 6. Eiu gcwohnliches Didraclmion von Damastium, das sich abei' durcli cine sonst bei diesen Stiicken von mir nocli nie beobachtete Schonheit des Apollokopfcs auszeichnet. Der Kopf ist zwar i^nmer noch weit hinter den goriugsten seiner Vorbilder, den Kopfen dor Chalkidischen Dzdrachmen, zuriickstehendj erhebt sich aber durch die Zierlichkeit der Beliandluug der Haare, des Krauzes, und durch noch rccht gute Modelliriing des Gesichts weit iiber die Menge der roheu und schlechten Miiuzen von Da- mastium. C.) unter dem Brustbild Gordian's III. r. mit Kranz und Gewand; vor ihm Keule, schriig nach unten. EL (sehr schlechtes Metall) 6,96 Gr. Die Stateren des Ininthimeyus sind schr selten und fehlten bis jetzt unserer Sammlung. Der Styl der Miiiize ist bei weitem besser als der der sehr rohen Kupfermiinzen des Kouigs. Gutschmid (ebeiida p. 150) glaubte den Namen Saulaces iesen zu milssen, da ein kolchisclier Dynast dieses Namens in mythisclier Zeit uberliefcrt ist. Rudolf Weil bat aber (Zeitscbr. f. Num. VIII, 329) unzweifelbaft riciitig erwiesen, dass dor ^a<xt. ein skytbiscber Dynast Namens Saumakos ist. Ein Skytbe dieses Nainens wivd als Machtbaber zur Zeit des Mitbradates in einer Inscbrift (Egger, journal des savans 1880 p. 506) erNvabnt. Icb mocbte nur dariu nicbt niit Weil iibereinstimmen, dass der Saumakos der von inir publicirteu Miinze ein fruberer Dynast dieses Namens sei, Styl und Aus- seben scheinen mir eber dafiir zu sprecben, dass dor in dei' In scbrift genaunte und der Saumakos der jMiinzen identiscb sind. Audi die bier bescbriebene Miinze muss wobl demselben sky- tbiscben Herrscber Saumakos angeboren, der Helioskopf ist beiden Mlinzen gemeinsam, aucb der Styl spricbt fur jene Gegend. Heraclea Bitbyniae. Unbiirtiger Hei'akleskopf mit Lowenfell r. .RJ. HPAKAEHTAN Tbronender jugendlicber Dionysos 1., mit Cantbarus und Thyrsus, unter dem Sessel "E, ill, 6. 9,16 etwas bescbadigt. Diese seltene Miinze ist dnrcb ibre Herkunft interessant: sic wurde mit andern kleinercn Silber- und Kupfermiinzen der- selben Stadt von Hrn. Rittmeister von Diest im alten bitby- niscben Hei'aklea sclbst erworben, ist also sicber in diesem Hcraclea Bitliyniae gepriigt, und nicbt, wie Imboof friiber ver- nmtbete (Numism. Zeitscbr. Wien, X, 1878 p. 101—110) in cincm, Heraclea Acarnaniae. Die von Hierocles im Bistliumverzeicbniss ei^iilinte Stadt Koviovnohg (Hierocl. cd. Parthey p. 22, 666, 6) wird als pbrygiscbe Stadt weit getreiint von dem zu Lycaonien ge- veclmeten "/xoVtov fir^rgonoXig (ibid. i>.

    This page intentionally left blank Byzantium’s Balkan Frontier is the first narrative history in English of the northern Balkans in the tenth to twelfth centuries. Where pre- vious histories have been concerned principally with the medieval history of distinct and autonomous Balkan nations, this study regards Byzantine political authority as a unifying factor in the various lands which formed the empire’s frontier in the north and west. It takes as its central concern Byzantine relations with all Slavic and non-Slavic peoples – including the Serbs, Croats, Bulgarians and Hungarians – in and beyond the Balkan Peninsula, and explores in detail imperial responses, first to the migrations of nomadic peoples, and subsequently to the expansion of Latin Christendom. Second-hand materials have only been used to compare the results obtained by the author with those which his pre- decessors have reached. The aim in. view has not been to present one more systematic chronology of Byzantine history, considered as a succession of tragic anecdotes standing out against a permanent background.I have followed the development of Byzantine life in all its length and breadth and wealth, and I have tried to give a series of pictures rather than the customary dry narrative. It may be found possibly that I have given insufficient information on the Slav and Italian neighbours and subjects of the empire.I have thought it my duty to adopt the point of view of the Byzantines themselves and to assign to each nation the place it occupied in the minds of the politicians and thoughtful men of Byzantium.This has been done in such a way as not to prejudicate the explanation of the Byzantine transformations. Ossaea- por José Antonio de la Ossa (?-c.1830), botánico cubano, director del primer jardín botánico de la Havana; krugii- por Karl Wilhelm Leopold Krug (1833-1898), empresario, naturalista y botánico alemán, vivió en Mayagüez, Puerto Rico de 1857 a 1867, patrón de la investigación botánica en la isla. Introducción Esta publicación expande y sustituye mis trabajos sobre la etimología de los géneros de plantas en Puerto Rico y de los géneros de plantas fanerógamas (con semillas) en La Española y en Cuba. Para que no se pierda la información sobre los géneros de plantas sin semillas incluidos en la primera publicación, los mismos se colocan aquí en un apéndice. De las plantas con semillas se incluyen en este trabajo 2072 géneros, en el apéndice hay otros 101. Determinar el significado de un nombre genérico es tarea simple cuando el autor lo ha explicado o cuando existe una inequívoca correspondencia entre el nombre y una característica muy particular de la planta. La tarea se complica cuando lo anterior no ha sucedido y la etimología ha sido objeto de deducciones e interpretaciones por distintos autores, a menudo sin haber visto la descripción original del género.
