  • S. I. Kochkurkina ANCIENT OLONETS
Fe1/llQscandia archaeowgicaX (1993) S. I. Kochkurkina ANCIENT OLONETS Abstract The Olonets Isthmus was colonized by man around 6,000 years ago. Stone Age and Early Metal Period dwelling-sites have survived from the earliest stages of settlement. Between the 10th and 13th centuries A.D. cemeteries with small burial mounds were established in the areas of the Olonka, Tuloksa, and Vidlitsa Rivers by the ancestors of the Livvik Kare lians and the Vepsians. The earliest written references to Olonets are in the Ustavnaya Gra mota of Svyatoslav Olgovich and in annalistic codes of the 13th century. Cadastre books of the 16th century contain a wealth of material on the history of Olonets. The strategic im portance of Olonets grew after the Treaty of Stolbovo (pi. Stolbova) in 1617, which was highly disadvantageous to Russian interests. In 1648-1649 timber and earthen fortifications were built at Olonets, and it evolved into the largest defensive and administrative centre of the Zaonezhye region. Together with documentary sources, archaeological excavations (conducted in 1973-75, 1988, 1990, and 1991) provide material for a study of how the tim bered town of Olonets and the courtyard of the fortress were built. They also reveal the fac tual contents of documentary sources, and describe material culture, which is not accessible through written sources. S.l. Adrian Selin,Kuzma Kukushkin, Ivan Sablin, Elena Kocheryagina REGIMES OF THE RUSSIAN– SWEDISH BORDER IN THE NOVGOROD LANDS BASIC RESEARCH PROGRAM WORKING PAPERS SERIES: HUMANITIES WP BRP 149/HUM/2017 This Working Paper is an output of a research project implemented at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE). Any opinions or claims contained in this Working Paper do not necessarily reflect the views of HSE Adrian Selin1, Kuzma Kukushkin2, Ivan Sablin3, Elena Kocheryagina4 REGIMES OF THE RUSSIAN–SWEDISH BORDER IN THE NOVGOROD LANDS5 The working paper analysed the infrastructure of the Russian-Swedish border from a transcultural perspective. The history of the border was split into three periods following major changes in political border regimes. The first period covered the history of the border between Sweden and the Novgorod Republic after its formal delimitation in 1323. The annexation of the Novgorod Lands to the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1478 marked the beginning of the second period. The third period, which is discussed in detail, covered the history of border infrastructure between the transition of large part of the Novgorod Lands to Sweden in 1617 and 1700. Departing from the debate whether the border was a line or a zone and overcoming state-centred approaches, the working paper demonstrated that the existence of several parallel border regimes during different periods enabled the simultaneous existence of the border as a line and a zone pertaining to different social interactions and subject to manipulation by authorities. The consolidation of the border did not follow the Treaty of Stolbovo (1617), but owed to local demands and an accidental event of an epidemic in 1629– 1630.

LAUS URBIS IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY FINLAND: GEORG HAVEMAN’S ORATIO DE WIBURGO AND OLOF HERMELIN’S VIBURGUM Hannu K. Riikonen In 1694 Georg Haveman, a Finnish student from the town of Vyborg on the Finnish-Russian border, delivered a Latin oration at the Academia Gustavo- Carolina, the University of Tartu (in Swedish: Dorpat) in Livonia. The ora- tion, the topic of which was Haveman’s native town, was published under the title Oratio de celeberrima Carelorum civitate, Wiburgo (‘An Oration about the Famous Karelian Town, Vyborg’).1 In published form, the oration was accompanied by a number of standard dedicatory and congratulatory pieces, including a text by the great Latinist Olof Hermelin, who was then Professor Eloquentiae at the University of Tartu. Haveman’s oration belongs to the epideictic subgenre of laus urbis (‘praise of the town’), which is closely related to the laus patriae (‘praise of the fatherland’). The oration deserves scholarly attention for three reasons: 1 There is no modern edition of Haveman’s oration. The present study is based on the original printed version; see Haveman 1694. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– This article is published as pp. 1-19 in Pernille Harsting & Jon Viklund (eds.): Rhetoric and Literature in Finland and Sweden, 1600-1900 [= Nordic Studies in the History of Rhetoric 2] Copenhagen: NNRH, 2008 http://www.nnrh.dk/NSHR/nshr2/index.html ISBN: 978-87-988829-1-6 © 2008 by Nordisk Netværk for Retorikkens Historie E-mail: [email protected] – Homepage: http://www.nnrh.dk 2 HANNU K. The Gulf of Finland, Neva River, and Ladoga Lake region. The Northwest of Russia including the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland with the numerous rivers flowing into the sea, the Neva River basin, Ladoga and Chudskoe (Peipsi) lakes provides many opportunities for fisheries. The Atlantic sturgeon, Atlantic salmon, trout, the Baltic herring and other valu- able commercial fish species have been caught in these waters through the ages. However, the history of fisheries in the Eastern Baltic has not yet been studied. This paper is the first attempt to outline the directions of research, to understand the state of fisheries in different centuries and the main trends of their development. Finnish tribes known later as Izhora settled the territory of the Neva River basin and the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland in the first millennium 197 AD. The Slavs appeared in this region not later than in the tenth century.1 Since early times fisheries were very important for the local inhabitants,2 although agriculture was their main economic activity.3 Since the early Middle Ages the territory of the present St. Petersburg re- gion was part of the possessions of the Great Novgorod.4 The territory of the Novgorod Republic was divided into five parts called Piatina (one fifth). Each Piatina consisted of districts called Uezd. The territory under study belonged to Vodskaia and Shelonskaia Piatina.
