In addition the main characteristics of the two languages are summarized, and a short survey of Arabic elements in pre-Tanzimat Turkish is given. A brief account of the Tanzimat movement in Turkish history concludes the chapter. The second chapter provides biographical background of the four authors on whose works this study is largely based. Their views on language and on Arabic elements in Turkish are given so far as these are known. In the Chapters III and IV some Arabic grammatical I factors, which have no direct equivalent in Turkish, or are fundamentally different in Turkish, are discussed and their appearance in Turkish is considered. I In Chapter V which is on phonetics, the general views of linguisticians are considered with particular care, as i linguistics is usually based on 'spoken language* whereas this study is on 'written language'. Then Arabic elements in Turkish are analysed from the phonetic point of view. In Chapter VI word formation is considered, and the i way in which Arabic elements are used for this purpose in Turkish is explained. The most common foreign element in linguistics, direct borrowing, is also mentioned. Chapter VTI deals with semantics: attention is con• centrated on the change in the meaning undergone by Arabio words when taken into Turkish. The final Chapter stresses the need for further research into the whole subject and the paucity of basic reference material. ARABIC ELEMENTS IN POST-TANZIMAT LITERARY TURKISH WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO HAMID, FIKRET, AKIF AND GOKALP BY H. Y. NUHOGLU Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Durham University. November, 1974. ii This work is dedicated to the memory of the late Professor M. N. (Qur'an, xxx/22) 9 = Therefore was the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. iV ; I PREFACE 1 Although the Arabic elements in Turkish have been a subject for discussion in Turkish linguistic circles for roughly a century they have rarely been treated in an unbiased way. They are either something beautiful and J sacrosanct, or destructive elements hostile to the true nature of the Turkish language. There have even been studies by 'scholars' to prove that the Arabic language was developed from the Turkic mother language. Thus, for a long time, there has been a need for a study to see them simply as foreign linguistic elements in Turkish. Thus the aim of the present work is to fill this gap. However, by presenting some conceptual suggestions and a possible viewpoint, it can hope at most to stimulate further investigation. If it encourages and assists others to reach more definite conclusions it will have served its purpose. My thanks are due, first and foremost, to my supervisor Mr. J. A. Haywood to whom 1 am deeply indebted for his scholarly guidance throughout my research during which he provided me with valuable advice and comments. He has, with his unfailing kindness, patience and under• standing, always been a strength to me. I owe a debt of deep gratitude to the scholars - Dr.s M. Anbarcioglu, S. inalcik, 0. Turan, M. Kaplan, and Mr. K. Or .from Turkey, and Dr. S. Khalusi from Iraq - whose encouragement drove me to study this particular field - Arabic elements in Turkish. V During the oourse of my work in Durham I have received encouragement, help and friendship from a number of people, both within and outside the University. I sincerely thank them through Professor W. B. Pisher of the Graduate Society, who may represent them. I also thank the staff of the Oriental Section of the University Library, past and present, for all the help given to me. Last but not least, my earnest thanks go to Mrs. C. Bates who typed the manuscript so painstakingly. I must, however, make it clear, that the responsibility for what has been written in this thesis is entirely mine. vi ORTHOGRAPHY For Turkish the present day Turkish alphabet is used, but diacritical marks are not normally employed except where this is necessary to show a difference. Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2019 Harun Buljina All rights reserved ABSTRACT Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina This dissertation is a study of the early 20th-century Pan-Islamist reform movement in Bosnia-Herzegovina, tracing its origins and trans-imperial development with a focus on the years 1901-1914. Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires.

This thesis explores and evaluates the representation of ethnic minorities in Turkish fiction against a background of demographic, political, and social change. Within this context, novels and short stories of selected writers have been studied with a view to determining differences of experience, perception and attitude. The writers include: Huseyin Rahmi Giirpmar, Halide Edip Adivar, Re§at Nuri Guntekin, Halikarnas Bahk9isi, Orhan Kemal, Haldun Taner, Sait Faik, and Ya§ar Kemal. The thesis comprises an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The Introduction gives a brief overview of historical events relating to demographic changes and ethnic minority status, and looks at the popular perception of minorities in the Ottoman performance arts.

• Language Use in the Ottoman Empire and Its Problems
LANGUAGE USE IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE AND ITS PROBLEMS (1299-1923) by Yelda Saydam Dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree M. Phil. in the Faculty of Humanities (Department of Greek and Centre for Islamic Studies) at the University of Johannesburg Supervisor: Prof. B. Hendrickx Co-supervisor: Dr A. Dockrat Johannesburg 2006/7 Abstract The Ottoman Empire, an imperial power that existed from 1299 to 1923, was one of the largest empires to rule the borders of the Mediterranean Sea. Ottoman Turkish was used especially between the 16th and 19th centuries during the Ottoman Empire. This ornamented, artificial language separated the general population from intellectual and palace elite and a communication problem followed. Although the minorities of the Ottoman Empire were free to use their language amongst themselves, if they needed to communicate with the government they had to use Ottoman Turkish. This thesis explains these language differences and the resulting problems they created during the Empire. Examples of original correspondence are used to highlight the communication differences and the difficulties that ensured. From this study, the author concludes that Ottoman Turkish was not a separate language from Turkish; instead, it was a variation of Turkish in inexistence for approximately 600 years. I Preface My family and I came to South Africa from Turkey during August 2002 for my husband’s sabbatical as a post-doctoral fellow at University of The Witwatersrand. We both took a years leave from our jobs when we came to South Africa. I was working for Havva Özişbakan High School in İzmir, Turkey as a Turkish Language and Literature teacher.

  • The Ideal of the West, the Reality of the East. Towards a New Poetics of Ottoman Modernization in the Novels of Edebiyat-I Cedide (1890S-1900S)*
DOSSIER The time of the changes: the last decades of the Ottoman Empire The Ideal of the West, the Reality of the East. Towards a New Poetics of Ottoman Modernization in the Novels of Edebiyat-ı Cedide (1890s-1900s)* Petr KUČERA Universität Hamburg In the introduction to his acclaimed collection of short stories called Küçük Şeyler (Little Things, 1891) Sâmipaşazâde Sezâi claims that nowadays novels –obviously referring to both the European and the Ottoman ones– “left behind their childish form of strange stories and odd narrations” (“garâib-i hikâyât ve acaib-i rivâyât”), are written in a “superb poetic style” and based on the “triumphs of science against the secrets of nature” and on the analysis of human heart and mind. Thus, he continues, the writing of novels today should be called “the science of literary anatomy” (“ilm-i teşrih-i edebî”).1 Other contemporaries remember what decisive impact the texts of the new generation of writers who produced their first fruits in the late 1880s had on them. Mehmet Rauf (1875-1931), later a major figure of the New Literature (Edebiyat-ı Cedide) movement, tells us in his memoirs that as a teenager he devoured everything what there was new in Turkish literature, from Namık Kemal to Abdülhak Hamit, and a good number of French novels, too. However, it was only when he happened upon the newly published Nemide by Halit Ziya (1889) that he discovered a completely new world of fiction. Enraptured by the story, its style, its plot, its beautiful language, he felt that it changed the way he had used to view the Turkish novel.

  • NEF'î HAKKINDA BİR BİBLİYOGRAFYA DENEMESİ Halil
Turkish Studies - International Periodical For The Languages, Literature and History of Turkish or TurkicVolume 8/1 Winter 2013, p.1977-1993, ANKARA-TURKEY NEF’Î HAKKINDA BİR BİBLİYOGRAFYA DENEMESİ Halil Sercan KOŞİK* ÖZET On yedinci yüzyılın ilk yarısında yaşamış olan Nef’î, Erzurum’un Hasankale ilçesinde doğmuştur.
