S. 539 • /' 3 • INTRODUCTION GENERALE Fondee en 1622 pour diriger l'oeuvre missionnaire, coordonner la distribution des ressources humaines et financieres, promouvoir le clerge autochtone, la Sacree congregation pour la propagation de la foi est tres presente au Canada a la fin du e • _ I XIX siecle, alors meme que l'Eglise canadienne s achemine vers la maturite. En effet, en 1908, avec la reforme de la curie romaine, le Canada cessera d'etre considere pays de mission. Les questions seront desormais adressees directement aux Congre- gations romaines. Seule l'Eglise de Terre-Neuve continuera a relever de la Propagande. Entre temps, sous le pontificat de Leon XIII, la geographie ecclesiastique se trans forme (voir tabLeaux I et II). Avec la . division des dioceses, la multiplication des institutions relevant de l'eglise et la necessite de composer avec des gouvernements aux priorites parfois opposees a celles de l'Eglise,les erijeux se font plus important&. Les questions appelant les solutions de la Propagande se font plus nombreuses et bien souvent plus longues et delicates a resoudre tant les parties en opposition sont resolues a se faire entendre et a obtenir gain de cause. Par consequent, les suppliques pour pousser ou retarder les inevita- bles transformations qu'appelent la croissance demographique et les besoins nouveaux s'accumulent en de lourds dossiers comme ceux de la querelle de l'universite Laval, de la question des ecoles du Manitoba et de la division du diocese de Trois- Rivieres, pour ne mentionner que les plus volumineux. Dans ces dossiers comme pour les questions quotidiennes, ce sont les eveques surtout qui ecrivent pour demander direc~ives et conseils, pour solliciter faveurs et privileges pour le clerge et pour ;/ •• .~ 4 • leurs diocesains. Mais les membres du clerge et des commu- nautes religieuses, parfois les fideles eux-memes, s'adressent aussi directement a la Propagande pour implorer justice contre leur eveque, pour s'opposer au demembrement de leur paroisse, demander une faveur ou une dispense. La quantite de documents est donc enorme par rapport a ce e qu'elle etait au debut du XIX siecle. Aussi, avons-nous du modifier la formule d~ presentation des documents utilisee dans 1 les inventaires precedents et nous tenons a preciser qu'il ~ s'agit ici d'un inventaire sommaire destine aux specialistes en histoire canadienne desireux de se renseigner rapidement sur le contenu des grandes series conservees dans les. archives de la Propagande. Dans le present ouvrage, la description du texte de chaque document est beaucoup plus breve, ne donnant en fait que l'essentiel. Nous omettons aussi le lieux d'origine des lettres et la langue dans laquelle elles sont redigees. Mais, puisque a peu pres tous les documents partent du Canada et que le nom de l'expediteur revele .le diocese de provenance, il aurait ete superflue de l'indiquer a chaque fois. Quant a la langue utilisee, nous y revenons plus loin ainsi que dans les introductions aux series. La documentation interessant le Canada se trouve dans les series suivantes: 1. ACTA~ 1878-1903, contenant les proces et decisions prises sur les grandes questions 2. SOCG, 1878-1892, renferme la documentation origin ale dont partie a servie a former les dossiers des proces 3. SC, 1878-1892, porte sur les questions quotidiennes • des missions 5 4. N.S., 1893-1903, la nouvelle serie ou sont fondues • les series SOCG, SC et autres 5. LETTERE 6. UDIENZE Les quatre premieres series, c'est-a-dire les plus importantes et les plus volumineuses, ont ete inventoriees. L'introduction a l'inventaire de chacune de ces series donne la description du contenu~ Pour les series LETTERE et UDIENZE, un index est a la disposition des chercheurs. La serie LETTERE est un registre de lettres de la Propagande en reponse aux demandes qui lui sont adressees. Cette serie se termine en 1892. A partir de 1893 ces lettres, sous forme de brouillons rediges en latin, sont incluses dans la serie N.S. L'index de la serie s'intitule Indice delle lettere, parte occidentale [pour les annees 1878 a 1892, voir les volumes 32 a 40] et contient un bref resume de chaque lettre, Ie nom du destinataire, l'annee et la page du document en question. Pour les decrets inclus dans cette collection, il existe egalement un index en trois volumes commencant en 1719. UDIENZE. Lors d'audience avec Ie pape, Ie cardinal prefet de la Propagande presentait certaines requetes d'ordre personnel: demandes de faveurs, d'indulgences, de privileges, de dispenses et autres. Les decisions du pape se trouvent dans les minutes de la serie ACTA. Cette serie n'est donc pas essentielle et de peu de valeur du point de vue historique. Elle etait importante cependant pour Ie fonctionnement de la Sacree congregation. Pour ceux qui desirent la consulter, il existe un bon index general en 28 volumes couvrant toute la periode de son existence, ".:.!, • de 1666 a 1897, les six derniers volumes, 23 a 28, portant sur • les annees 1876 a 1897. 6 • Les documents conserves aux archives de la Propagande sont rassembles dans des volumes relies, divises selon l'annee et le sujet, et contenant entre 500 et 1000 ou plus folios. Dans notre inventaire nous donnons en haut de chaque page le nom de la serie et le numero du volume d'ou proviennent les documents cites. Pour chaque document, la date et l'auteur, le destinataire des lettres n'etant specifie que lorsqu'elles sont adressees a une per sonne ou institution autre que PF ou le pape. Pour les eveques nous n'avcns pas cru necessaire de donner a chaque fois le titre et le prenon, sauf la ou il pourrait y avoir confusion, quand deux personnes portent le meme nom, entre autres les Racine, Langevin, Walsh, O'Connor. Vient ensuite une breve des- cription du contenu et le numerc du folio. Ainsi 173r-180r indique que tout l'ecrit du document ou dossier est contenu entre ces numeros et que le verso du folio 180 est en blanc. Suivent les numeros de folios sans ~~ pour indiquer le debut de chaque document a l'interieur d'un dossier ou d'un ensemble de documents. Ne sdnt pas indiques cependant les folios ou pages en blanc a l'interieur des dossiers. La pagination des volumes d'archives est souvent double: une manuscrite, plus ancienne, et l'autre, plus recente, imprimee. Nous citons tbujours l'imprimee sauf evidemment la ou il n'y a que la manuscrite. De tous les volumes compiles, un seul etait en liasse et non pagine. Les dossiers qui concernent les Etats-Unis, mais qui ont un certain rapport avec le Canada, soit parce que la personne dont il est question a deja habite ou sejourne au Canada ou qu'il s'y trouve de la correspondance avec des membres du clerge canadien, sont signales mais le detail du contenu n'est pas • donne. 7 Un dossier est un groupe de documents sur un meme sujet • parfois precede d'une page titre avec les numeros de protocole, parfois tout simplement relies un a la suite de l'autre en ordre chronologique ou bien encore relies a l'interieur du premier document de sorte que le dernier folio de ce premier document vient a la fin du dossier. Les langues comprises a la Propagande etaient l'italien, le francais et le latin, les deux premieres etant les plus fre- quemment utilisees. Aussi, les documents en anglais sont-ils accompagnes d'une traduction en general italienne, parfois francaise. Dans certains dossiers contenant une volumineuse correspondance en anglais, on trouve meffieles factures du tra- ducteur. Mais, dans 1 'ensemble, les eveques qui ecrivaient en anglais passaient par l'intermediaire du College irlandais a Rome. Son directeur, Mgr Kirby, transmettait lui-meme la requete en une traduction libre italienne, conservant chez lui, plus souvent qu'autrement, l'originale. Plusieurs eveques des provinces atlantiques ont etudie au College urbain: Mgrs O'Brien, Cameron, M.F. Howley, C.J. MacDonald entre autres. Ceux-ci correspondent toujours en italien comme le font d'ailleurs tous les anciens etudiants de ce college lorsqu'ils doivent faire rapport de leur etat, mission et situation personnelle en vertu d'un serment fait a la Propagande. Les eveques d'expression francaise ecrivent en francais en general.

In 1991 he received the Ontario English Teachers' Award of Merit, the highest distinction the association grants. In 1998 he received the Glorya Nanne award for his writing on Catholic education. In 2002 he received the Social Justice Award from the Toronto Secondary Catholic Teachers Association. In 2006 the Ontario Teachers’ Federation honoured him with the Greer Memorial Award for his “outstanding commitment to publicly funded education.” A pioneer in Holocaust studies, he was the first teacher in Canada to systematically teach the Holocaust (1968) and has done several workshops for the Holocaust Remembrance committee. In 1993 he co-authored the Ministry of Education OAC course on Philosophy. For 30 years Ted has taught OECTA courses on scripture, social ethics and the sacraments as well as doing several series on biblical themes in parishes.
