Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies. Mother Teresa

Hello Everyone,

As another school year approaches an end, it is an appropriate time for us to look back on what we have achieved and also to look forward to what we would like to accomplish in the coming year.

Our virtue for June is “Faithfulness”, which is defined as: “Full of faith, or having faith; disposed to believe, especially in the declarations and promises of God.” Another definition is: “Firm in adherence to promises, oaths, contracts, treaties, or other engagements.” And still another states: “True and constant in affection or allegiance to a person to whom one is bound by a vow.”

Nothing is more noble, nothing more venerable than fidelity. Faithfulness and truth are the most sacred excellences Marcus Tullius Cicero

Throughout our lives we are called to be faithful to the values, teachings and traditions of our parents and our . We are asked to be faithful and loyal to our families and our friends. As professionals, we are also compelled to remain faithful to the duties and responsibilities that define our careers.

Remaining faithful is not always an easy task. When challenges arise in our work places and in our homes, it is often difficult to remember the promises that we have made to others and to faithfully soldier on and overcomes those obstacles.

Our schools are called upon to remain faithful to Christ’s teachings and to be true Catholic communities where all are welcome and all are cherished. We should take great pride in the fine work that takes place in our classrooms, in our parishes and in our communities to bring those teachings to life.

Above all, I urge all of us to remain faithful to our God, who has always remained faithful to us.

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.

On behalf of all senior staff, we are extremely grateful to all parents, students and staff who remain faithful to Catholic education and to the Toronto Catholic District School Board. THANK YOU!

CSAC Financial Documents, Insurance and Fundraising Portal

As the 2007/08 school year is coming to an end the Finance Department has received many requests from CSAC’s for clarification on risk management and financial matters. Your assistance in taking the time to review the following tips and reminders as you finalize your financial activity for this year and plan for next year will greatly enhance your financial security and accountability.

Financial Documents • At the conclusion of the school year all financial records should be stored at the school over the summer. • All cheques, cash and petty cash should be deposited to the appropriate bank account over the summer months. • All blank cheques and bank books should be securely stored at the school over the summer months. • An annual report to the community must be completed in September for the 2007/08 school year and the CSAC financial information must also be recorded in the School Banking System at that time for inclusion in the Board’s year end financial statements.

Liability Insurance – Non Board Sites • The Board’s liability insurance coverage for events held away from Board property is the same as the coverage for events held on Board property provided the event is authorized/approved by the principal of the corresponding school. • OSBIE’s Board liability coverage is $20 million per occurrence with no deductible and also includes coverage for volunteers. • Requests for a “Certificate of Insurance” or “Confirmation of Coverage Certificate.” Many outside facilities will request proof that adequate insurance is in place before they will allow a group to occupy their premises. These certificates can be obtained from the Finance/Risk Management Department and are usually available within two days.

If a certificate is required, please email risk management ([email protected]) providing date(s) of event, approximate number of students attending and the name of the organization asking for the certificate of insurance.

Supplemental CSAC Liability Insurance • In the fall, the Board’s insurer (OSBIE) will make available supplemental liability insurance for CSAC’s which may be purchased at their own expense. This insurance would be purchased only where in the out of ordinary situation that CSAC activities will be undertaken that are not typically considered normal educational activities and are not endorsed or approved by the principal of the school. This insurance will only be made available at the beginning of the year and if a CSAC decides later in the year that they would like to purchase supplemental insurance then they will unfortunately be required to find their own source. An example is as follows: If the principal of a school declined to have a graduation ceremony and a CSAC group of parents decided on their own to rent a hall and have a celebration then they would also need to arrange for their own insurance. • At the beginning of the new school year CSAC’s will be asked if they would like to purchase this insurance. A list of CSACs that respond favourably will be forwarded to the Board’s insurer (OSBIE). The anticipated cost per CSAC per year is $80.

Crime Insurance • If CSAC funds are stolen or disappear from the school then the Board’s crime insurance will only be extended to CSAC losses if the money is being held in trust by the school. In order to be considered “held in trust” funds need to be in the care, custody and control of the principal or school secretary. • To maximize insurance coverage, funds should be stored securely at the school location under the care, custody and control of the school principal or school secretary whenever possible and financial records must be in place to support any loss claim.

Fundraising • Canada Helps is now available as an option to assist you with your fundraising activities. Canada Helps is an online donation portal that facilitates the donation process at very little cost. • Nine schools have enrolled this year and are benefiting from this service.

Toronto Association of Parents in Catholic Education - TAPCE - 2007-2008 Principal of Excellence Award - Nomination Form

April 18, 2008

Dear CSAC Chair and Parents:

Thanks to the many CSAC’s who submitted nomination forms for their Principals of Excellence, we will be hosting the TAPCE Principal of Excellence award again this year.

The winner of the 2006-2007 award, Mr. Pat Tari, was nominated by the parents of Blessed John XXIII and was presented with the TAPCE Principal of Excellence, 14K gold lapel pin. We were honoured to have the Minister of Education, Honourable Kathleen Wynne at the commissioning ceremony and she presented Mr. Tari and the twelve nominees with a TAPCE Principal of Excellence Award Certificate. Mr. Tari’s name was engraved on our TAPCE Principal of Excellence plaque that hangs proudly in the atrium of the Catholic Education Center.

A principal is a lifeline within the school. He or she nurtures relationships between the parent, school and parish community and is responsible to ensure that their school provides a safe and welcoming environment for our children.

Do you know a principal who encourages their students to always be the best they can be? Someone who is an innovator, an inspiration and a leader to his or her staff? Then you should nominate your principal for the TAPCE Principal of Excellence award.

We would like to acknowledge principals who have made extraordinary contributions to their school to help ensure a quality education for their students. He or she will be a person who works collaboratively with their parent community. A person who combines passion with the ability to lead, challenge, and support dignity for an inclusive environment.

The nominations for this award are open to all CSAC’s and the award winner will be announced at the next TAPCE Commissioning Ceremony in November 2008.

Deadline for submission is June 22, 2008.

Attached is the nomination form which consists of three pages: ; include all pages of the form with your submission (instructions are listed on first page of form) ; mail the completed form in a sealed envelope using the internal mail service available at your school. You can re-use the envelope this was mailed to you in or address your envelope to: TAPCE – Principal of Excellence Award Committee c/o OAPCE Room 312, St. Rita Catholic School 178 Edwin Ave., Toronto, ON M6P 3Z9

‘Our title is our glory’: Neil McNeil High School’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Tomorrow’s Trust, May 27, 2008

by Noel Martin

Fifty years is a long span in a human life, but in the context of a school fifty years is merely late adolescence!

The origins of Neil McNeil high school can be traced back to an invitation of the Archbishop of Toronto to the Holy Ghost Fathers in Ireland to found a Catholic school for boys in Toronto.

Over the past fifty years the Spiritans have seeded and nourished the distinctive Spiritan culture of the school and have passed on that living legacy to the vibrant and thriving school of today. They can tell the stories of the difficulties and indeed the hardships that accompanied this venture. But together with the students and the parents, who placed their trust in them, a school grew and prospered and sent out its alumni to make significant contributions to Canadian society.

A school community is not completed by its students alone, although they are the critical mass for the simple reason that without them there is no school! But it needs its staff, its support staff and its administrative staff and these are a very important factor in the creation of that community of Neil McNeil of which we are so proud to sing in our school song that ‘Our title is our glory!’

Neil McNeil is all about community, a vibrant Catholic school community. It was in addition a vibrant Spiritan community, which shared in the same educational philosophy with other Spiritan high schools around the globe. That philosophy looked to the education of the whole person intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, physically and with a significant emphasis on service to humanity at home and abroad.

Yes, there were days for many of us, when any other profession on the face of the earth seemed more attractive than the task of opening young minds to the possibilities that lay ahead. But that was a passing shadow.

To teach, one has to love the student in all that student’s moods and tenses. The vocation of teaching has long term implications, and teaching in a Catholic school has eternal implications. It is with great pride that we, the teachers at Neil, view the significant contributions that you, the students, have made to the fabric of life in Ontario and indeed across Canada and beyond.

Neil McNeil Alumni have graced many careers and professions. That so many of you have followed us into the teaching profession is both flattering and humbling. Learning is a two-way proposition. You learn from us, we learn from you. If the learning in a classroom is not mutual, then it is an undeveloped learning.

I shall never forget Neil McNeil. It was my introduction to this wonderful country and I would not change it. Many of us, students and staff, are older now, maybe even wiser! Our hair which was once long, short or shaven is now grey, thinning or gone. But we will celebrate this Anniversary with grateful hearts knowing that we spent time together in this mutual enterprise called Catholic Education, and in that time affected some change in each other. And in an apology and a paraphrase of the W.B. Yeats poem, Easter 1916, we, the alumni and staff of Neil McNeil High School: Now and in time to be, Wherever maroon and grey is worn, Neil boys are we! Our Title is our Glory! Fidelitas in Arduis

Noel Martin is a director of education for the Ontario Catholic School Trustee’s Association and former Director of Education with the TCDSB and is a member of the alumni of Neil McNeil High School.

Once again Cardinal Leger Catholic School has been very proud to be associated with the Terry Fox Campaign and held our 18th Annual Terry Fox Run on the 3rd Annual Terry Fox National School Run Day.

We feel that this event is an ideal way in which to launch a successful, positive and meaningful school year. Over these 18 years over $389,305.00 has been raised by the pupils in this school community in support of cancer research.

Cardinal Leger Catholic School ranked 4th in the top contributing elementary schools in the Province of Ontario. Over 3,450 schools across Ontario participated this past school year. Our goal this year was to surpass last year’s contribution (approximately $25,310), which we did!

We appreciate the involvement of the School Advisory Council and the parent community at this annual event. Please visit the Terry Fox website for information on the foundation at www.terryfoxrun.org. The 4th Annual Terry Fox National School Run Day is on Friday, September 26, 2008.
