I was teaching a high school class — textbook TransCanada Province stuff, reading it, asking questions about it, receiving answers, seeing if the subject matter was getting across, going to the board, writing down key words and Editors: Fr. Then I put down the book, sat on the edge of the table and asked the class, “Does this stuff really matter? What do you think is Design & Production: Tim Faller Design Inc. in it for you? Let’s be upfront with each other.” No immediate response. I waited. And then one by one came their opinions — the beginning of a spirited exchange. CONTENTS Does this stuff really matter? Spirited Education What really matters in the long run? Fifty years is a sizeable period of time in the life of a school. Long enough to answer the 3 As I See It: really matters question. Above all, perhaps, the different spirit Neil McNeil 50th Anniversary that pervaded the halls and classrooms. Neil’s story continues to be a vital embodiment of ongoing Spiritan education. 6 The Founding Fathers Exteriorly, the building looks much the same as it did in 1958. It added a third floor after a few years, it included several portables and an annex for about thirty years. But now it is on the rise again and a larger school building is needed. Plans for the future of the school are being drawn up. 18 We Look Back, We Also Look Ahead What really matters? 20 The Spiritan Way As Neil celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this Pentecost Sunday, a lot will be said about its school spirit. There were inspired and inspiring teachers, inspired and inspiring classes, 22 A Very Special Place inspired and inspiring students. The mixture resulted in self-discovery, mutual enrichment, 24 Transforming Young Boys growth, greater insight into oneself and life. Things came together. When the subject into Catholic Leaders mattered seventy minutes went by all too quickly. Sometimes things fell apart — seventy minutes can be an eternity in such a classroom. 25 The Young Spiritans But it wasn’t just “stuff” that really mattered. The intermix of adults and teenagers made all the difference. Popular teachers made life bearable — not those whose requirements made their course an “easy pass”, but those who brought their material to life and brought 27 VICS: Women Weeping life to their teaching.
