May 16, 2005 SUBJECT: 2 Office of the Director of Education CATHOLIC PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES On October 12th, 2004 the Office of the Director of Education informed the TCDSB community that a review of the status of the Catholic Professional Learning Community initiative would be reviewed by an outside group of consultants led by Michael Fullan and Dan Lang. The review has now been completed and the report will be forwarded shortly. Essentially, the review concludes that all of the evidence to date indicates that the pilot Catholic Professional Learning Communities established in June 2002 have yielded positive results in terms of improved student achievement and increased professional capacity in teachers and administrators. We are encouraged by the findings of the report and are convinced that continued commitment to the sustainability of Catholic Professional Learning Communities will foster collaboration amongst all of our stakeholders in Catholic Education, actively promote student learning and provide an excellent vehicle for the delivery of job embedded professional development. Over the coming year a steering committee and an advisory group will guide the work of the Catholic Professional Learning Communities of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. May 16, 2005 SUBJECT: 3 FROM THE BOARD Summary of Board Highlights and Decisions _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thursday, May 5, 2005 Human Resources, Program & Religious Affairs Committee _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ OSSLT Results Show Improvement The Toronto Catholic District School Board's results on the October 2004 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test show that TCDSB students continue to improve in their overall literacy skills. A total of 78% of first-time eligible students were successful on the assessment. This represents an increase of 6% in achievement compared with the results of the October 2003 results, when 72% of students successfully completed the test. The Board continues to provide students a wide range of programs and services to support all students, with a particular emphasis on supporting students at risk, through its Success for All initiative. Of the previously eligible TCDSB students 62% were successful in the October 2004 administration of the OSSLT. In addition 16% of previously eligible students have met graduation requirements by taking the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC). Individual school and school board results for the October 2004 OSSLT are posted on the EQAO website at www.eqao.com Donation to Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund The Board was pleased to present a cheque in the amount of $15,529 to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. The money was collected by TCDSB schools during their toonie days held during African Heritage/Black History Month. Extended-Day Program to Continue The Board will continue to operate an Extended-Day International Languages Program at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School. The Portuguese language program at that school is now mandatory for all students. Staff congratulated for Special Olympics event Staff at the elementary cross-country championship were commended for the manner in which they ran the Special Olympics event on Wednesday May 4, 2005 at Morningside Park at the city-wide cross-county championship. It showed the best efforts of our Board in integrating special needs students into the daily activity of the Board. The positive experience of these students who in the past would not get this opportunity was evident to all. They were received warmly and applauded by all.
