Students pitch in with tsunami relief Mirror, May 22, 2005

Students at Regina Mundi Catholic School showed that they haven't forgotten those who have been affected by the Dec. 26 tsunami South Asia. The Grade 6 students held a number of events including a breakfast and bake sale, coffee and treat sale for parent-teacher interviews and a Mother's Day card and flower sale, to raise $2,000 for those who have been left homeless. "It was enough for them to know that the money they raised was being used for the children of Sierra Leone," said Grade 6 teacher Carmelia Lofaro in a press release.

Students take ownership in school's facelift LISA RAINFORD Bloor West Villager May. 20, 2005

Once upon a time, the Bishop Marrocco Thomas/Merton Catholic Secondary School's front entrance was set to undergo a transformation. Proposed architectural plans called for a glassed-in foyer at its Dundas Street entrance. However, this plan was not entirely realized. Instead, there exists a bleak, empty courtyard. Heather Corriveau, the school's Grade 12 visual arts teacher, decided to improve its sorry state. "I really wanted to change the outside courtyard. It's quite gray and institutional," she said.

LOCAL DESIGNER

Collaborating with local designer and sculptor Kristen Fahig, Corriveau and her class set about creating artwork that would adorn the building's brick walls. Fahig has worked in schools over the past decade through the Ontario Arts Council Artist in Education program. She has developed and led community art projects in three local parks.

The goal was to create something bright and colourful that would be inviting to both students and the community. Corriveau wanted to change the neighbourhood's perspective of the space and students' psyches. They decided to build 10 life-size figures in various poses that have been mounted on the north chapel wall and continue around to the main doors.

"We chose 10 cultural themes," said Corriveau, "based on the cultures represented in our school." The figures were cut from four by eight-foot pieces of plywood - some as tall as eight feet, others as short as five feet.

The students then researched textile and adornment designs. Although they were painted, Corriveau wanted her students to create what looked like fabric draped over the figure.

Some of the cultures that students explored included Portuguese, Caribbean, South and Central American, Asian and African. "We spent a lot of time on research," she said. "The painting took a long time too."

Corriveau's long-term goal is to have picnic tables and benches installed to give students a place to have lunch and do homework. She plans on creating more figures each year with her classes. The project has received positive feedback.

"They really took ownership and pride in the project," Corriveau said of her students. "They really worked hard. I'm very proud of them." Said Catia Pereira; "we worked on an assignment, which brought inspiration and excitement to all of us. Hopefully, our school will accept it as respectfully as we have."

Students celebrate empowerment By FITZROY GREENE, Share Magazine

Hundreds of students from 70 Toronto area schools joined Toronto Police Services (TPS), ProAction Cops & Kids and Bell Canada to celebrate the 2005 Empowered Student Partnerships (ESP) showcase held recently at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex at the Canadian National Exhibition fairgrounds.

The daylong festivities included a brief address by Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair, a celebrity breakfast, an awards presentation and a showcase emceed by Much Music's video jockey Rick Campanelli.

Keynote speaker Marc Kielburger, of the global charity, Free the Children, gave an address that included a slide and video presentation documenting the leadership roles, philanthropic and humanitarian contributions of several world figures, past and present, to eliminate hunger, ignorance and illiteracy worldwide.

Also speaking to the students were Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Monte Kwinter, Terry Mosey, Executive Vice-president of Bell Canada, Anthony Longo, Chair of ProAction Cops & Kids Board of Directors, and John Currie from Correctional Services Canada.

Said Kwinter: "Students have a right to be safe and feel safe in their schools and on its property - although I have to admit high schools today are different to when I went to high school in my era. It seems to me that today peer pressure is more intense. But, what hasn't changed is it takes a few strong leaders like you to resist that pressure because giving in to pressure is the easy choice, shrugging your shoulder saying it's not my problem.

"Actually, all it takes is courage and convictions. Work to change negative behaviour and because of you the schools and communities would be healthier and safer. A safer school means a better learning environment and better opportunities."

The ESP program initiated by TPS 33 Division in 1997 has expanded because of strong and committed partnerships with stakeholders such as the Canadian Safe Schools Network, City of Toronto and district school boards. Its evolution, which included the citywide launch of the ESP in 2002, has continued unabated with approximately 100 high schools currently registered.

The program is Canada's largest student-driven high school safety initiative. Thousands of Toronto high schools students have participated by taking leadership roles in their school communities. It functions on the premise that students know best what the safety issues are in their schools and how to effect solutions. A partnership of staff advisors, divisional police officers and students is formed to plan, organize and execute yearlong school and community anti-violence initiatives.

The 17 schools adjudged winners in the top Divisional ESP Team Award category were: Bishop Morroco Catholic School, York Memorial Collegiate Institute, , St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School, , Father Henry Carr Catholic School, St. Basil the Great and Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School, Senator Donald O'Connor College, Neil McNeil Catholic Secondary School, Agincourt Collegiate Institute, Sir Robert L Borden B.T.I., Jarvis Collegiate, St. Joseph College School, Marshall McLuhan School, East York Collegiate and St. Patrick's Catholic Secondary School.

Among other recipients and awards were: - Global ESP Award; St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School - Bell Canada Inspirational Award; L'Amoreaux Collegiate Institute - Bell Canada Innovative Award; Northview Heights Secondary School - Bell Canada Creative Award; Loretto Abbey and Marshall McLuhan Secondary Schools - Banking on Youth Awards; Senator O'Connor Catholic School - Chief of Police Award; and St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School - The Jan Thor Award.

Chief Blair, who handed out the plaques, told the students their presence at the showcase afforded him a great opportunity to see the outstanding leadership that exists in Toronto schools.
