Christmas 2008 Message from the Director of Education

As a Catholic community, the end of Advent signals the end of our waiting for goodness and light to come into our world and into our lives.

We begin to anticipate the happy times that we will spend together with loved ones in celebration, and the opportunity to rest and rejuvenate our bodies, our minds and our souls.

At the same time, we are very much aware that the end of the calendar year is also fast approaching. It is natural to look back upon the 12 months that have come before and examine the positive as well as the not so positive things that have transpired in our personal and professional lives.

The New Year always brings with it the possibility of new beginnings, of new hope and new opportunities.

I thank each of you for your contribution to Catholic education during 2008. Your talents, energy, enthusiasm and tireless efforts on behalf of our students and school communities are always appreciated.

During this Christmas season, I extend my warmest wishes to the entire TCDSB community for a peaceful and joyous time with family and friends.

May God’s blessings continue throughout the year ahead.

Les Nemes Director of Education

______What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace.

NO EARLY DISMISSAL PRIOR TO CHRISTMAS OR SUMMER VACATION

There will be no early dismissal of students on the last day of school prior to the Christmas break or summer vacation.

The Toronto Catholic District School Board, has completely harmonized School bus transportation services with the Toronto District School Board. This has resulted in significant savings for the TCDSB, but has taken away some of the flexibility we previously enjoyed.

The practice of early dismissal on the last of school before Christmas Holidays and summer vacation is a practice of the TCDSB, which is not implemented by the TDSB. The TDSB will not be adopting this practice. Therefore, there will be no early dismissal on the Friday before Christmas or the last day of school in June.

Should you have any questions or concerns on this matter please contact your local Superintendent.

THE VICTOR ANGELOSANTE AWARD NOMINATION FORM

DESCRIPTION OF AWARD

The Victor Angelosante Award is named in honour of Mr. Victor Angelosante, a former Health and Physical Education Program Coordinator for the Toronto Catholic District School Board, school administrator, teacher, coach and Toronto Catholic Schools Athletic Association (TCSAA) executive member who died in 1994. Victor Angelosante recognized early in his career that school athletics possessed enormous potential to build Christian fellowship in the hearts and minds of young people in our schools. He further recognized and demonstrated that athletics was one of many critical avenues educators could pursue to foster in children a sense of respect and confidence, an understanding of commitment, the significance of teamwork, and the desire to dedicate energy toward the pursuit of excellence. The Victor Angelosante Award is presented annually to a TCDSB elementary employee who, through significant involvement with athletics and the TCSAA, has made an outstanding contribution toward the overall development and education of young people. The award winner is one who personifies those qualities Victor demonstrated in abundance and one who embodies and inculcates by example the highest traditions of a Catholic educator and a dedicated sportsperson.

SELECTION PROCESS

1. Principals, teachers or other TCDSB staff may forward the name of a nominee to the TCSAA executive no later than Friday January 23, 2009. Please submit these forms and a letter of recommendation (typewritten please) to Larry Lazazzera, Our Lady of Lourdes ([email protected]).

2. The TCSAA executive and the Health & Physical Education Department staff will select the annual award winner at a meeting scheduled for January 27, 2009.

PRESENTATION

1. The award will be presented on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at the TCSAA Annual Coaches’ Recognition Dinner. (mark this date on your calendars)

St. Barnabas volleyball girls win TCDSB championship December 04, 2008 3:32 PM www.insidetoronto.com

The Blues won against St. Martin de Porres 25-17 and 25-12 in the final game. The team's record for the season is 112 wins and 11 losses. They have been invited to compete at the Glashan Cup in Ottawa in January. "Coming from a background where they do not play volleyball outside of school, the team has done exceptionally well for themselves showing a fantastic amount of drive, determination and dedication to their sport," said coach Candice Carvalho. She added the girls are a great group and are modest about their skills. "The girls are considerable athletes, but they also conduct themselves with the principles of good sportsmanship both on and off the court," she said. During their games, the girls play hard and rarely let the ball hit the floor, she said. "They will dive, get up, dive again, slide on their knee pads, even crash into things to get the ball back into play if for some reason it doesn't go where it should," she said. "They are extremely co-ordinated as a team, often playing over and around each other, with a seemingly intrinsic sense of where the ball is and where it should be going." In the city finals player Roxanne Santos served 24 consecutive points to finish the game with a score of 25-1. Another player, Pransiya Franco served 19 consecutive points in the span of a game. Tournaments the team has competed in include: Brian Bonser Tournament - 1st out of 10 teams; Our Lady of Lourdes - 1st of 5 teams; Catholic Cup Tournament - 2nd out of 25 teams; St. Barnabas Invitational Tournament - Site Champions; Holy Child Tournament - 1st of 15 teams; Halton Provincial Cup - 3rd out of 48 teams; Toronto Catholic School Board Divisional Tournament - 1st out of 5 teams; Toronto Catholic School Board Regional Tournament - 1st out of 12 teams; Toronto Catholic School Board City Finals - 1st out of 8 teams

Students 'lift' little girl School Advent campaign raises money to purchase van wheelchair lift for eight-year-old with cerebral palsy By TAMARA SHEPHARD www.insidetoronto.com (The Etobicoke Guardian) December 04, 2008 2:03 PM

Little Megan Masse loves puppies, the colors purple and pink, and the hugely popular High School Musical films. The eight-year-old also enjoys excursions, currently frustrated by the pressing need to customize her family's van with a $20,000 ramp and lift for her customized wheelchair. Megan has severe dystonic cerebral palsy. While her mind is bright, Megan experiences chronic hip pain, can't sit on her own, and doesn't speak. But Megan's heart- and life- is literally being lifted this Christmas by St. Louis Catholic School students who are raising money for their Advent campaign, called Megan's Journey: 'Lift' the Spirit. Throughout December, St. Louis students will purchase $1 raffle tickets for a chance to spend three lunch hours doing any of 26 fun activities, including making jewelry, ice cream sundaes, tacos and pizza, playing Wii and Guitar Hero, even being principal for half a day. Xbox tickets sell for $5 each. Donations from the community, either individual or corporate, are also encouraged. To donate, call the principal at 416-393-5331. "This is a community with a very big heart. Megan has given us the gift of the opportunity to give and to bring to life the true meaning of Christmas," said principal Roseanne Morris after the campaign kickoff at the Mimico school Tuesday morning. Megan's connection to the school is a personal one. Her grandmother Cidalia Sousa worked as the school secretary until she took early retirement five years ago to help her daughter care for Megan. Students sat cross-legged on the gymnasium floor for an Advent homily, then watched photos set to music that traced the life of the little girl with the electric smile and dancing brown eyes. "This is so much more than we could ever have dreamed of," Megan's mom Nidia said as she thanked staff and students. "It will make a huge difference in our lives." At present, Megan and her mom rarely leave home except for medical appointments. Masse and her mother lift Megan and her wheelchair in and out of the family van, but their backs are suffering under the strain. This summer, the family raised approximately $2,000 toward the ramp through a barbecue and garage sale fundraiser. But more funds are needed. Students exploded with excitement Tuesday, particularly at the prospect of playing Wii, Guitar Hero, and the chance to go head-to-head with teachers in a volleyball match. "Ms. Morris knows everyone wants to help our family and our community," said Julieta Garcia-Vargas, 10. "We'll be doing activities that will encourage students to give even more. I think it's a great idea. I hope it raises a lot of money." The campaign's grand prize is a trip for three primary students to see the just-released High School Musical 3 with their teacher later this month. It is hoped Megan and her mom will join them.

TCDSB Chaminade College School Teacher is named MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Written by John Borst on November 27, 2008 – Tomorrow’s Trust

The Toronto Catholic District School Board congratulates Alex Voros, a teacher at Chaminade College School, for being named MusiCounts Teacher of the Year for 2008. Mr. Voros has taught music for over 30 years and under his leadership, the music program has become a vital aspect of school culture and an award-winning component of the school’s profile.A ceremony at the school was scheduled for Thursday for Voros to receive the award from members of the Tragically Hip.

His 70-piece school orchestra was set to perform. For his tireless commitment to both music and his students, Voros will receive a handcrafted award commissioned by Canadian glass artist Shirley Elford, designer of the JUNO Awards statuettes, a $10,000 cash award and an invitation to attend the 2009 JUNO Awards in Vancouver to be held from March 26-29, 2009. The school’s music program will also benefit from a $10,000 grant. Principal Michael Wallace nominated Alex Voros for the Award, describing him as “a model of dedication to his discipline and to the teaching profession at large.

”His bands have beaten out both American and Canadian bands in North American competitions, and Alex has always maintained his goal of shaping his students with a classical perspective of music and a true appreciation for the performing arts. “We congratulate Mr. Voros on achieving this well-deserved national recognition,” says Catherine LeBlanc-Miller, Chair of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. “His dedication to music, to the students who have studied with him and who have been inspired by him, clearly reflects our mission of educating students to their full potential. ”Students of varying abilities are welcomed into the concert band, and under his guidance, young men who may not excel in other areas, have an opportunity to shine.

“We take great pride in Alex’s latest accomplishment,” says Director of Education Les Nemes. “TCDSB has always been a strong advocate for the arts as an essential part of the curriculum. It is wonderful to see such a talented educator being recognized for their contribution to the arts, and to the students in our Catholic schools.”Srinka Wallia, Executive Director, MusiCounts also extended her congratulations to Voros. “We are delighted to honour Alex who has committed himself not only to teaching music but to inspiring each and every one of his students,” she said.Alex Voros is the fourth recipient of the annual MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award and the first recipient from Toronto. Chaminade College School was the recipient of a Band Aid musical instrument Grant from MusiCounts in 2006-07.

In his off-hours Voros is a member of the Big Smoke Big Band which can be heard at The Dominion on Queen on the first Monday of the month.MusiCounts is the music education charity of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Bullying 'pinked' at school rally Students pledge to stand up to bullying By TAMARA SHEPHARD Etobicoke Guardian November 25, 2008 5:16 PM Seeing a peer in a pink shirt years ago could have been a harbour from the storm for Ola Kosarewicz. The teen sported her own pink T-shirt Monday and joined her Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School classmates in raising awareness of the issue on International Stand Up to Bullying Day. "I used to be bullied when I was young. I didn't talk about it, and no one cared. Now I'm helping to raise awareness that if people feel alone, they can come to you," said Kosarewicz, 17, as she received an empathetic embrace from fellow student, Dylan Kirpaul, 15. Johnson students donned Stand Up buttons, wore pink pledge T-shirts and signed a banner to speak up against bullying. Pink is an emblem in a growing anti-bullying movement that has swept schools across North America since last fall when two Nova Scotia teens campaigned their entire student body to wear "a sea of pink" in support of a bullied student. Bullies had harassed and called a Grade 9 boy a homosexual for wearing a pink polo shirt on the first day of fall classes. Vice-principal Ugo Rossi gives workshops across Ontario, and in the U.S., on how to recognize and overcome bullying, and empower students. "It's absolutely important for us to empower students to know that a support network exists. It's a serious issue. The best prevention is a rally like this to bring awareness to it," said teacher Veronica D'Amico, who organized the Grade 9 and 10 rally with colleagues, Santina Monteleone and Paul Morrone. During the rally, We Will Rock You actor Jack Langedijk shared with students how he was bullied from Grade 1 through high school. Despite moving nearly 500 kilometres away to university where he knew no one, fear haunted him for years, he said. "Whenever you see another human being, there is an opportunity for kindness," Langedijk told students. "Passion means whatever you do in life, you pass it on, whether you touch someone gently, or yell at them. "Ask yourself, 'What did I leave behind when I said that?' Every time you make a judgment, ask, 'What does that say about me?'"

SUBJECT: 20-8 “Division 4 champions” On Wednesday November 12, 2008 Our Lady of Victor Catholic School was crowned Division 4 Champions in Girls Intermediate Volleyball. OLV finished first overall out of five teams. The girls’ team was undefeated in the Tournament losing only one set in the finals against St. Clement but winning the thrilling final set 15-7. This was the first time in eight years that the Girls Volleyball Team won a pennant in this competition. Honours go to the renown, intriguing but famous coaching staff of Mrs. Coggon and Mr. Ciraco (Champions League). The girls showed pride and determination

Regional Volleyball OLV participated in the Girls West Regional Volleyball Tournament at Fr. Henry Carr on Nov. 19th, 2008. The Girls played well but the tournament was much more competitive. We were able to defeat St. Benedict’s 2-0, split with St. Josaphat 1-1, and ended up losing both sets to All Saints, bringing the Volleyball season to an end. Even though the season is over the girls learned quite a bit in regards to team spirit, sportsmanship and determination. All eyes will now center on the Junior Volleyball Teams to continue and maintain the volleyball tradition at OLV.

TCDSB STUDENTS REACH OUT TO ATTAWAPISKAT YOUTH Students and staff from the Toronto Catholic District School Board attended a Human Rights Youth Forum lead by youth from Attawapiskat on November 26th. The Attawapiskat students were enlisting the support of youth from the TCDSB and other educational institutions in a one-day conference held at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. The day’s agenda was designed to raise awareness and to call students and staff to action against the many challenges facing the students of Attawapiskat in their campaign to build a new school.

The youth have taken their crusade to Toronto after losing their elementary school which was closed in May 2000 due to contamination of the soil in the area from a leak in the heating fuel lines. Attawapiskat students prepared and presented readings on “What Education is like in Attawapiskat”, after which they held a media conference. Several guest speakers also addressed the throughout the day, including Mushkegowuk Grand Chief Stan Louttit and AFN Ontario Regional Chief Angus Toulouse. Over 350 students from Grades 6 and up attended the conference, representing the TCDSB, Toronto District School Board, Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, OISE and other schools and boards from as far away as Ottawa.

TCDSB TEACHERS PRESENT LITERACY WORKSHOPS IN ATTAWAPISKAT On Wednesday November 19, 2008, at 8:10 am, five teachers from TCDSB boarded a plane on their way to Attawapiskat, Ontario. In Timmins they met up with a teacher from Thunder Bay who was joining them for the journey. After five hours of travel, they landed in the small community of Attawapiskat with their suitcases loaded with literacy materials for the presentations they were about to deliver to the teachers of the community’s schools. Attawapiskat is an isolated First Nation community located on the James Bay coast in Northern Ontario. The community is accessible by air only except in the winter when the frozen shoreline is made into a road that extends down to Moosonee. About 2,000 people live in Attawapiskat. There are two schools: JR Nakogee Elementary School and Vezina Secondary school. 401 students attend the elementary school and 175 students attend the high school.

A conference called “Community, Culture and Curriculum – Teaching and Reaching Students Through Literacy” was the result of many months of planning between Brenda Stewart, a Literacy Resource Teacher with the TCDSB and Stella Wesley the principal of the elementary school in Attawapiskat. Professional Development usually requires teachers and other educational personnel to fly out of the community at considerable expense. This literacy conference was brought to the teachers of Attawapiskat.Seventy-five teachers, educational assistants, counsellors, administrators, and support staff from JK – Gr. 12 attended large and small group presentations over the two day conference. Presentations included community building activities, indigenous storytelling, picture books by Aboriginal authors and illustrators, early literacy assessment, shared reading, non-fiction writing, reader’s theatre, read aloud, guided reading, development of English language skills, OSSLT, developmental assets and leadership programs. A supper was included on the Thursday evening for all the educators and presenters with a presentation on the Seven Gifts of the Grandfathers. All the presentations were well attended and well received. The interaction between the presenters and the participants was positive and insightful as each learned from the other. The Toronto teachers were able to share their knowledge and expertise about curriculum but at the same time learned a great deal about living and teaching in a remote community, about Cree culture, and about the struggle this particular community is having due to the soil contamination and subsequent closure of their elementary school. Without a central building, this school is now housed in scattered portables. The challenge of establishing and maintaining a sense of community for both teachers and students without a school building is very difficult. Perhaps this literacy conference contributed to some community building as the teachers shared, interacted, and learned together. On Saturday afternoon November 22, six energized teachers in high spirits boarded a small 8- seater plane to begin their flight back to Toronto. As they flew over the lakes, rivers and frozen ground, with James Bay in the distance, the excitement of their journey was all but contained. The experience was incredible, from the warm, welcome and hospitality of our hosts to the positive reception of our PD presentations, through to our new learning about the people and life in Attawapiskat. We are so thankful for the opportunity – Meegwich!

Newman Students Have Achieved Against All Odds Cardinal Newman Catholic High School students have flexed their muscles again. Four students, Aaron and Ashton Trotman-Grant, Tsedey Asrat-Tola and Ryan Simmons-Gaskin competed in the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) U of T contest “Try-Math-A-Lon” on October 31st and defeated their rivals to achieve first place. In keeping with school tradition in winning against all odds, these highly-motivated students managed to deal with their daily course loads, assist at the school’s grade 8 curriculum night and then hopped on a yellow school bus for an 11-hour ride to New Jersey for the regional competition. In spite of these challenges, they placed third against their highly competitive rivals in the Regional NSBE Try-Math-A-Lon on November 8th, in Parsippany, New Jersey. The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) with a membership of over 30,000 is one of the largest student-managed organizations in America. It consists of 233 chapters on college and university campuses in Canada and the United States. These chapters are divided into six geographic regions. NSBE goals are to: stimulate and develop student interest in various engineering disciplines; strive to increase the number of minority students studying engineering at both undergraduate and graduate levels; encourage members to seek advanced degrees in engineering; promote public awareness of engineering and the opportunities for blacks and other minorities in that profession.

The 7th Annual Human Robotics Competition – the Mask Event On Wednesday, 3rd December over 500 students from 10 TCDSB elementary schools in eastern Toronto participated in the Mask event at the Ontario Science Centre. The Mask event is part of an effort by Cardinal Newman High School to keep Technology alive and well in our schools. For the second year Cardinal Newman was joined by a team from Neil McNeil High School, who mentored three elementary schools for the event. The Grade 9 Integrated Technology class at Neil McNeil, taught by John Scalpello and Joseph Ferro, worked with Jessica Kelly's Grade 7/8 class from St. Denis, Barbara McCleery's Grade 8 class from St. Joseph's and three classes from St John's: Sarah Martin Grade 7/8 class, Toni McCann's Grade 8 class and Alisha Horbay's class. Through the Robotic Mask Competition, the Grade 9 students mentor their younger counterparts first by learning new skills then by learning to pass on these newly acquired skills to help the junior students construct functional robotic masks. Students work in pairs (one the robot, the second the controller) to maneuver through a maze in the shortest time possible. The 1st place was taken by a team from Our Lady of Fatima, 2nd place by a team from St Denis (their first year in the competition) and 3rd place was won by a team from Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Mask event is designed to develop skills in simple electronics and to provide an opportunity for students to decorate their mask - the results indicate that there is an abundance of artistic talent and imagination in our schools.

SUBJECT: 20-14 Christmas Spirit at Marshall McLuhan – December 5th, 2008 For the month of November the Life Skills students at Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School students collected money through their initiative “Change for Change”. They gave every classroom a “Change for Change” container, and asked that the students give their spare change to help the poor and homeless this winter. They made daily announcements over the PA, and asked for help from the students. They asked the students to give pennies, dimes, anything they could spare for those who have nothing.

The students came up with this initiative to raise money specifically for the Good Shepherd Centre, as well as for the Christmas Gift Basket program at Marshall McLuhan. The students understand that the poor and homeless need their help, especially during the cold winter months, and that some people will get no gifts this Christmas. The Marshall McLuhan Christmas Gift Baskets initiative creates gift baskets for needy families in the community. The baskets provide Christmas gifts and the ingredients for Christmas dinner to families in great need. The baskets will be delivered on December 16, 2008, at which time the students will help load the boxes onto the truck that will deliver the Christmas Gift Baskets to those families in need, they will also present the Good Shepherd with a cheque on this day. The “Change for Change” initiative set a goal for a few hundred dollars, but the first week, the students collected $145 so they increased their announcements and visibility in the school. The students collected $1005. They are overwhelmed by the success of this program, and are so happy to help those in need.
