Ozon, çeşitli kısa filmlerin ardından deli dolu filmografisinin de habercisi olan ilk uzun metrajı Sitcom (1998) ile adını duyurdu. Fransız sinemasının “kötü çocuğu” etiketiyle Pasolini’nin Teorema’sına gönderme yaptığı bu gerçeküstü kara komedinin ardından Rainer Werner Fassbinder’in aynı adlı, sahnelenmemiş oyunundan uyarladığı Kızgın Taşlara Düşen Su Damlaları ile melodrama olan hürmetini, absürt mizaha, abartılı stille ve eşcinsel karakterlere olan ilgisini ortaya koydu. Bu filmle Berlin Film Festivali’nden Teddy Ödülü ile döndü. Her biri şevk üzerine ve kışkırtıcı olan filmografisi aynı yıl Kumun Altında ile başka bir yöne doğru gitti: 25 yıllık eşi birdenbire ortalıktan kaybolan Marie rolünde Charlotte Rampling’i oynattığı bu güçlü dram Ingmar Bergman tarafından “başyapıt” ilan edildi. Fransız sinemasının ikon kadın oyuncu- larını bir araya getirdiği 50’lerin Hollywood melodramlarını canlandıran ci- nayet konulu müzikal 8 Kadın ve yine Rampling’i başrolde izlediğimiz gerilim ve entrika öyküsüyle Havuz ile daha büyük bütçeli filmler kulvarına geçe- bileceğini kanıtladı.
