We need to be reminded about the central message of the Christmas story - God WIth Us. * All Scripture is from CSB (Christian Standard Bible) unless otherwise noted. The central message of the Christmas story didn’t begin with Mary and Joseph & a baby named Jesus. Hundreds of miles and 2000 years removed, God’s great plan began to unfold as God called out to Abram (later known as Abraham). Genesis 26:4 I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky, I will give your offspring all these lands, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring, The rest of the Bible is the story of God using the family of Abraham to bless all nations...through the birth, life, death, & resurrection of Jesus. In fact, the first line of Matthew’s story begins like this… Matthew 1:1 An account of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: Abraham’s family was tested and tried, going through many tough times...often feeling afraid & alone. Abraham’s son, Isaac was afraid of the Philistine people who mistreated him. In the middle of it, see God’s encouragement… Genesis 26:24 (LEB) And Yahweh appeared to him that night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you, and I will bless you and make your descendants numerous for the sake of my servant Abraham.” Wouldn’t it be GREAT to hear those powerful words...from the God of the universe!?! ‘Do not be afraid, for I am with you’. -
The Textual Basis of Modern Translations of the Hebrew Bible
CHAPTER EIGHT THE TEXTUAL BASIS OF MODERN TRANSLATIONS OF THE HEBREW BIBLE One is led to believe that two distinct types of modern translation of the Hebrew Bible exist: scholarly translations included in critical commentaries, and translations prepared for believing communities, Christian and Jewish. In practice, however, the two types of translation are now rather similar in outlook and their features need to be scrutinized. Scholarly translations included in most critical commentaries are eclectic, that is, their point of departure is MT, but they also draw much on all other textual sources and include emendations when the known textual sources do not yield a satisfactory reading. In a way, these translations present critical editions of the Hebrew Bible, since they reflect the critical selection process of the available textual evidence. These translations claim to reflect the Urtext of the biblical books, even if this term is usually not used explicitly in the description of the translation. The only difference between these translations and a critical edition of the texts in the original languages is that they are worded in a modern language and usually lack a critical apparatus defending the text-critical choices. The publication of these eclectic scholarly translations reflects a remarkable development. While there is virtually no existing reconstruction of the Urtext of the complete Bible in Hebrew (although the original text of several individual books and chapters has been reconstructed),1 such reconstructions do exist in translation. Lesson 3 - Matthew 1 Cont. THE BOOK OF MATTHEW Lesson 3, Chapter 1 Continued In our previous lesson we studied at length the genealogy of Yeshua that opens Matthew's Gospel. We discovered that Matthew seems to have created a structure for his genealogy based on the numbers 3, 14, and 42. It is unknown by Bible research scholars whether this was an original thought for Matthew or if he merely found it in an earlier document and used it (all 3 Synoptic Gospels had to have used earlier documents to draw from because none of the writers were present with Christ). However no such earlier document with the same or a similar genealogy for Jesus has been discovered; that one might exist is purely conjecture. An important point to keep in mind is that unlike in modern times when genealogies are meant to be precise reconstructions of one's direct family tree, that was not necessarily the goal of genealogies among the Hebrews in ancient times. Their goal was to prove something; and what was meant to be proved was flexible according to the author's agenda. So what we find in Matthew's genealogy seems to be an emphasis on the mathematics that in that era were considered somewhat mysterious and itself imparted a message. The scholarly name for this focus on numbers and their meaning is gematria. Clearly: being precise about Yeshua's ancestral tree was not the goal, because some generational names are skipped. Matthew honed in on the importance of Christ being the son of David. -

HEBREW MATTHEW AND MATTHEAN COMMUNITIES by DEBRA SCOGGINS (Under the Direction of David S. Williams) ABSTRACT Shem-Tob’s Even Bohan contains a version of the Gospel of Matthew in Hebrew. By comparing canonical Matthew to Hebrew Matthew, the present study shows that Hebrew Matthew displays tendencies to uphold the law, support the election of Israel, exalt John the Baptist, and identify Jesus as the Messiah during his ministry. These tendencies suggest that Hebrew Matthew reflects a less redacted Matthean tradition than does canonical Matthew. The conservative tendencies of Hebrew Matthew reflect a Jewish-Christian community with characteristics in common with other early Jewish Christianities. The significance of studying such communities lies in their importance for “the partings of the ways” between early Judaisms and early Christianities. * * * * * * * Three Early Biblical Translations We do not have any of the original manuscripts of the books that have been included in the Bible. All we have is copies of copies. Most of the original manuscripts of the Old Testament were written in Hebrew, although a few chapters of Ezra and Daniel were recorded in Aramaic, the language of Jesus. The books of the New Testament were first written in Greek. The first translations of the Bible were of the Hebrew Bible. The Septuagint (SEP-too-a-jint) was a Greek translation written about three centuries before the birth of Christ. Two other early translations, composed after the birth of Christ, were the Peshitta in Syriac and the Vulgate in Latin. These three translations, the Septuagint, Peshitta, and Vulgate became the official translations of the Old Testament for the Greek-, Syriac-, and Latin-speaking churches respectively. Each also became the basis for other translations of the Bible. The Septuagint The Septuagint (from the Latin word septuaginta meaning seventy) was a Greek version of the Bible created during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (ca. 285-246 BCE) in Alexandria, Egypt for Diaspora Jews. Most of Jews living outside of Palestine were Greek-speaking as a result of Alexander the Great's (357-323 BCE) campaign to Hellenize his empire. First verses of Genesis (click for larger picture) At first, the Septuagint (LXX) consisted only of the Pentateuch (Torah, first five books of the Bible). Different books were translated from the Hebrew over a span of two centuries, including the books of the Apocrypha, and were added to the LXX. -
