PART III: Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico The “main focus” of our five-day trip, in the early spring of 1952, was extended time to visit two locations—Carlsbad Caverns National Park, in the southeastern part of the State of New Mexico, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico—across the International Border from El Paso, Texas, which lies in the far western tip of Texas. A beautiful morning awaited as we rose from our beds in the small motel in the town of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Out in the parking lot, in front of our room, the Hudson was covered with a thick layer of dust, accumulated during our long drive through Colorado and New Mexico. No rain in sight to help wash the car off, but my dad pulled into a Texaco Gas Station in town to refuel, and have the attendant check the oil and clean the windshields and side windows for us. (While living in Denver, Colorado, my dad often frequented a favorite Texaco Station on Colorado Blvd., not far from our first house on Birch Street.) In a friendly tone, and looking at our license plates, which read “Colorful Colorado,” the station attendant asked, “How far have you folks come? Headed for the Caverns I bet! Any time of year is a good time to go, ya’ know! Doesn’t matter what the temperature is on the outside today, cause deep in the Caverns the temperature is the same year round—56°.” Motel Stevens in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Curt Teich vintage linen postcard. Leaving Carlsbad and the Pecos River Valley behind, my dad pointed the Hudson southwest out of town on US Hwy.

Preservation News Vol. 2 No. 3 Fall 2015 NGPF STARTS RESTORAT ION EFFORTS FOR D&RGW T- 12 #168 The NGPF paid $10,000.00 for the move of D&RGW narrow gauge engine; T -12 #168, from its decades-long display site at a park across from the train station in Colorado Springs to insure restoration efforts could begin this winter. Raising money to restore an engine is far easier than raising money to move it from one place to another. Hence the NGPF felt it could make a difference by underwriting the move and helping the restoration project to start. The intent is to operate this T-12 on the C&TS. The history of this class of engine is explored in a related article on page 2, but it represents late 19th century technology for passenger power and remains an elegant example of the Golden Age of railroading. #168 was shopped at D&RGW’s shops at Burnham in Denver in 1938 and donated to the City of Colorado Springs where it has remained on display, cosmetically restored until it’s move this September for restoration. Indeed, it is possible that if the #168 is in as good shape as is hoped given its overhaul prior to being placed on display, a T class engine could be steaming in Colorado in 2016. The NGPF is helping to make this possible and the effort is off to a good start. And the engines Mal Ferrell called “these beautiful Rio Grande ten- wheelers” may be around for many years to come.

  • Historic-Era Domestic Refuse Deposits Are a Commonly Encountered Resource Type but Do Not Always Yield Important Information Through Archaeological Data Alone
DOMESTIC LIFE IN TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY LOS ANGELES: CONTEXTUALIZING A HISTORIC-PERIOD ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE MADELEINE T. BRAY AND MONICA STRAUSS ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATES, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA Historic-era domestic refuse deposits are a commonly encountered resource type but do not always yield important information through archaeological data alone. Historical records can enhance and complement archaeological data. In 2013-2014, 25 historic-period refuse deposit features were documented during construction monitoring in downtown Los Angeles. The features were associated with a brief period of residential development between the 1880s and 1920s. Review of historical materials helped to identify and interpret the nature and duration of occupation and the demography, socioeconomic status, and cultural background of the people associated with the features. Domestic refuse deposits are a frequently encountered type of historic-era archaeological feature, particularly in an environment such as downtown Los Angeles, which has been occupied by Euro- Americans since the late eighteenth century. In particular, such features are common in areas inhabited prior to the advent of municipal garbage collection in the late nineteenth century, when residents would often dispose of garbage in pits or as sheet refuse on their properties. In 2013-2014, 25 refuse deposit features were recorded during the course of construction monitoring in downtown Los Angeles in advance of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) La Kretz Innovation Campus project. The archaeological features were recorded as a single site under the trinomial CA-LAN-4460H. The site is located within the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles and encompasses a 3.16-acre city block, surrounded by Palmetto Street on the south, Colyton Street on the west, Fifth Street on the north, and Hewitt Street (historically Carolina Street) on the east (Figure 1).
