Roman Ryterband: Life and Work 2014 PADEREWSKI LECTURE-RECITAL Polish Music Center INTRODUCTION The program of music by Roman Ryterband (1914-1979) presented by the Polish Music Center on the USC campus on 2 April 2016 celebrates the culmination of a long and truly satisfying collaboration with the composer’s widow, Clarissa Ryterband, his daughters, Astrid Ryterband and Diana Eisele, and their families, to assemble a great treasure trove of materials related to Roman Ryterband. This concert and the commemorative booklet herein officially mark the donation of the Ryterband Collection to the archives of the Polish Music Center, which celebrated its thirtieth anniversary of service in 2015. Besides disseminating information about Polish music worldwide and staging concerts on the USC campus and beyond, the Polish Music Center is a unique repository of manuscripts by leading Polish composers. The Manuscript Collection that began in 1984 with gifts from Stanisław Skrowaczewski and Witold Lutosławski now encompasses thousands of items representing the most important Polish composers of the twentieth century, including such exceptional figures as Zygmunt Stojowski, Henryk Wars (Henry Vars), Bronisław Kaper, and Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Each of these extraordinary collections represents a microcosm of a composer’s life and persona, often encompassing not only manuscripts, sketches and notes, but also personal and professional correspondence, memorabilia and countless personal items, photographs, and writings. Pieced together, this mosaic of elements offers a fascinating portrait of the artist, shedding much light on their activities, personal interests, family and friends, and historical context. This is particularly true of the Roman Ryterband Collection, which opens up new vistas and exciting possibilities for thorough research into this relatively little-known composer. -

Abstract: The article focuses on Irena Anders, the wife of General Władysław Anders. It is based on a variety of sources, mainly memoirs but also my own memories since I had the pleasure of getting to know this extraordinary lady in person. Renata Bogdańska – because this was her stage name – belonged to people who definitely knew what they wanted in life, and was always ready to face new challenges. She was musically gifted, sang beautifully and took part in performances of various theatrical groups. The Second World War had a huge influence on her life. She followed the fate of many other Poles from the Eastern Borderlands, marching among the army organized by Władyslaw Anders in the Soviet Union. The general made efforts to lead the Polish troops out of the Soviet Union, to Persia – controlled by the British forces. It was fate that brought these two together on the war trail. After the war, they got married and settled in London. Everyday post-war life was not easy, but the Mrs Anders worked hard to overcome all difficulties. She often visited Poland and spoke with pride about her patriotism and love for Poland. She had a warm, open personality and was very likeable. The aim of the conferences is to exchange relevant informa- tion and experiences between the members of EFNIL, as well as to stimulate and strengthen awareness of the linguistic diversity of Europe among policy makers, educators, journalists and the general public. With this goal, EFNIL holds annual conferences every year in a different country. The 2016 conference was held in Warsaw at the Polish Academy of Science and was hosted by the Council for the Polish Language. The general theme was Stereotypes and linguistic prejudices in Europe. The General Assembly of EFNIL had selected this topic because of the influence that stereotypes and prejudices have had (and are still having) on the mutual perception of the various peoples and ethnic groups in Europe. -

Musica Iagellonica 2018 eISSN 2545-0360 Marek Żebrowski (Polish Music Center, USC, Los Angeles) Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Henryk Wars: Discovering a Masterpiece Introduction The solo concerto has had a long and distinguished pedigree that reaches back into the Baroque era, when this genre was introduced into the music literature canon. The Classical era had furnished the concerto with an enduring and care- fully worked-out formal design, whilst the Romantic era ushered in the experi- mentation that highlighted the soloist’s virtuosity and relaxed the classical-era formal layout. With the improvements in piano construction and extension of its range from just under the six octaves in the 1790s to the Erard’s seven-octave grand in the 1820s 1 to just shy of seven and half octaves (or more on Bösendorf- er Imperial Grands), by the end of the nineteen century the romantic virtuosos were liberated to display their strengths on concert stages and in elegant salon appearances as they performed on new and larger concert grand pianos with a more resonant sound and faster-responding mechanical action. In addition to the traditional, Classical-era concerto with its three standard movement structure, by the early 1800s a number of one-movement concertos – often called Koncertstück, Pièce de concert or Concertino – also began to appear. Jerzy Bartmiński What does it mean for stereotypes to “reside in language”? Abstract (English) This paper presents an ethnolinguistic understanding of stereotypes, as opposed to that prevalent in sociology. While sociologists emphasise the psycho-social functions of stereo- types, linking them with prejudice, endowing them with negative characteristics and criticising them for partiality, false generalisations and resistance to change (cf. Schaff 1981), ethnolinguists follow the reasoning laid out by Lippmann (1922) and Putnam (1975) in emphasising the cognitive functions of stereotypes. In this approach, the social, integrating function of stereotypes is considered important, but secondary to the richness and multidimensionality of the stereotypical content, represented in the form of the cogni- tive definition. Stereotypes are thus not only images of ethnic groups but of the totality of the human experience (people, objects, and phenomena), as well as being mythological and ideological images (e.g. of freedom, equality, solidarity, etc.). Stereotypes are taken to be indispensable, as they are an integral part of natural language. They are also subjective and ethnocentric, because that is what language itself is like in its role of categorising and simplifying the experience of the world around us. In this paper, stereotypical judgments are divided with regard to their modality into pictures (X is such and such); patterns or models (X is and should be such and such); mythological images (X may be such and such); and ideological images (X may be and should be such and such). The common feature of all stereotypical judgments is covert universal quantification instead of existential quantification (i.e. a certain property is ascribed to all, rather than to just some exemplars of a category), plus a peculiar kind of modification, limiting the judgment to typical and/or true representatives of the category. -
