This guide is intended to provide brief information to the Paralympic Family who participates in the Games. PARALYMPIC FAMILY GUIDE - AUGUST 2016 6 2 Welcome Messages Dear friends, On behalf of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Rio de Janeiro for Latin America’s first Paralympic Games. With around 4,350 athletes from close to 170 countries competing in 22 sports, these will be the biggest Paralympic Games to date. They will also be the most widely broadcast with over 120 TV channels set to show pictures to a record four billion cumulative viewers around the world. The growth in popularity of the Paralympics in recent years has been down to the ever-improving performances of the athletes. Paralympians are getting faster, stronger and more agile all the time and it is their accomplishments that have led the Paralympic Games to becoming the world’s number one sporting event for driving social inclusion. Without a doubt, Rio de Janeiro is one of the world’s most spectacular and beautiful cities. This Paralympic Family Guide will assist you during your time here as it provides all the information you need to know to ensure your stay in this breath-taking city is a memorable one. Remember during the Games, you can follow all the news and live results at www.paralympic.org and receive the latest updates at @paralympic.     Olympic Games Day 1 Olympics Summer Winter Aniket Pawar Special/Paralympics Youth The Original Greek Games began in ancient Greece took place every fourth year for several hundred years. The earliest record of the Olympic Games goes back to776 BC. The Original Olympics The only event was a foot race of about 183 meters. They also included competitions in music, oratory and theatre performances. The 18-th Olympics Included wrestling and pentathlon, later Games – chariot races and other sports. In 394 A.D. the games were ended by the Roman emperor Theodosius. Pierre de Coubertin Brought the Olympic Games back to life in 1896. SPORTS IN SUMMER OLYMPICS • The current categories are: ▫ Category A: athletics, aquatics, gymnastics.3 ▫ Category B: basketball, cycling, football, tennis, and volleyball.5 ▫ Category C: archery, badminton, boxing, judo, rowing, shooting, table tennis, and weightlifting.8 ▫ Category D: canoe/kayaking, equestrian, fencing, handball, field hockey, sailing, taekwondo, triathlon, and wrestling.9 ▫ Category E: modern pentathlon, golf, and rugby.3 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES • held every four years. • The athletes compete in 20 different disciplines (including 5 Paralympics' disciplines). Founder & Beginning • The foundation for the Winter Olympics are Nordic games. • Gustav Viktor Balck - organizer of the Nordic games and a member of the IOC. • The first Summer Olympics with winter sport were in London, in 1908. The first ‘winter sports week’ was planned in 1916, in Berlin, but the Olympics were cancelled because of the outbreak of the World War I. The first true Winter Olympics were in 1924, in Chamonix, France. • In 1986, the IOC decided to separate the Summer and Winter Games on separate years.

Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated.
