The Organising Committee for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games welcomes all of the Olympic Family to Rio de Janeiro and wishes everyone very successful and enjoyable Games. This guide is intended to provide brief information for everyone in the Olympic Family who will participate in the Games. OLYMPIC FAMILY GUIDE - JULY 2016 6 2 Welcome Messages Welcome to the Olympic Games Rio de Janeiro 2016. Welcome to the Cidade Maravilhosa. This is the moment Brazil has been waiting for: welcoming the world to the first Olympic Games in South America. These will be spectacular Olympic Games. Brazil and the Brazilians will enthusiastically welcome the world and overwhelm us with their joy of life and their passion for sport. The Brazilian people and the cariocas will remind the world of their unique combination of passion and efficiency. This Olympic Family Guide offers information and practical advice to help you make the most of the Games experience and your time in Rio de Janeiro. Thank you to the Rio 2016 Organising Committee for their dedication and hard work in preparing this moment. The next weeks will be an unforgettable experience for athletes, spectators and everyone in the Olympic Family. Wishing you a wonderful stay in Rio de Janeiro, Thomas Bach President of the International Olympic Committee OLYMPIC FAMILY GUIDE - JULY 2016 7 We are just a few days away from the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. We will embark on a memorable experience and a renewed hope will arise. The Games come at a time when the world needs to be inspired by the example of sport. The athletes will show us what humanity is capable of. And it only takes us to be connected with the right values: the values of sport, inclusion and non-discrimination. Brazil had the dream to be the first country in South America to host the Olympic Games. We reaffirm our promise that these will be unforgettable moments, and this is only possible thanks to the tireless efforts of everyone involved. I would like to thank President Thomas Bach and the International Olympic Committee for repeatedly showing us the true meaning of the word “friendship”. Since 2009, the invaluable input of specialists has been essential to help us create and organise our Games. We were never short of challenges on this journey. Difficulties made us stronger. And the Rio 2016 Games allow us to inspire future generations with a message of accomplishment. We can now say to the youth, speaking from experience, that we shall not give up on our dreams. I am very pleased to welcome you all to our “Marvellous City”, to enjoy the energy of this moment and the passion of our people! THE UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEE ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT. JOE KOVACS, SHOT PUT As the track & field outdoor season comes to a close, shot put thrower Joe Kovacs has enjoyed a breakout year in 2015. At the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing, Kovacs won his first World Championship title in the men’s shot put on August 23. Kovacs finished the qualifying round in the lead with a mark of 21.36m, automatically qualifying him for the final on just his second attempt. In the final, he threw a 21.93m for his fifth attempt at the Bird’s Nest, setting him apart from the pack with a 19cm lead. The win in Beijing marks Kovacs’ seventh first place victory so far in 2015 and he is the sixth United States thrower to win a world title. Leading up to the World Championships in Beijing, Kovacs led the pack throughout the season. He had a strong start at the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational in April where he claimed first place and improved his personal best distance. Kovacs continued this strong momentum into the 2015 IAAF Diamond League meets where he dominated the competition earning three first place finishes as well as a second and a fourth place. To add to his list of 2015 gold medals and first place finishes, Kovacs won gold at the USA Track & Field National Championships in June with a throw of 21.84m. One of Kovacs’ biggest victories during his outstanding 2015 season was at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Monaco in mid-July.
