ל W i on г*♦ * •, t ו•. * Heidi Bergmann-Thränhardt - 9783954794430 Downloaded from PubFactory at 01/10/2019 03:42:13AM via free access 01909000 00050610 v j umm<ÿ 7 ג ļ ״.^•ģ ia ffo A 4)/' J > _ 4 י / Маѵроітр) ’! • 'Virginija'dimitrije Demetera
VESNA CVJETKOVIĆ-KURELEC »Virginija« Dimitrije Demetera (jezičnop ovijesni osvrt) 1 Život i rad Dimitrije Demetera (1811-1872) u hrvatskoj su književnoj i kazališnoj historiografiji višestruko istraživani.

  • The Book Art in Croatia Exhibition Catalogue
Book Art in Croatia BOOK ART IN CROATIA National and University Library in Zagreb, Zagreb, 2018 Contents Foreword / 4 Centuries of Book Art in Croatia / 5 Catalogue / 21 Foreword The National and University Library in Croatia, with the aim to present and promote the Croatian cultural heritage has prepared the exhibition Book Art in Croatia. The exhibition gives a historical view of book preparation and design in Croatia from the Middle Ages to the present day. It includes manuscript and printed books on different topics and themes, from mediaeval evangelistaries and missals to contemporary illustrated editions, print portfolios and artists’ books. Featured are the items that represent the best samples of artistic book design in Croatia with regard to their graphic design and harmonious relationship between the visual and graphic layout and content. The author of the exhibition is art historian Milan Pelc, who selected 60 items for presentation on panels. In addition to the introductory essay, the publication contains the catalogue of items with short descriptions. 4 Milan Pelc CENTURIES OF BOOK ART IN CROATIA Introduction Book art, a constituent part of written culture and Croatian cultural heritage as a whole, is ex- ceptionally rich and diverse. This essay does not pretend to describe it in its entirety. Its goal is to shed light on some (key) moments in its complex historical development and point to its most important specificities. The essay does not pertain to entire Croatian literary heritage, but only to the part created on the historical Croatian territory and created by the Croats. Namely, with regard to its origins, the Croatian literary heritage can be divided into three big groups.

sanja majer-bobetko hrvatska akademija znanosti i umjetnosti ———— BETWEEN MUSIC AND IDEOLOGIES: CROATIAN MUSIC CRITICISM FROM THE BEGINNING TO WORLD WAR II* roatian music criticism has not yet been completely researched, and all the re- C search carried out to date has been sporadic and unsystematic. As the Croatian lands were exposed to often aggressive Austrian, Hungarian and Italian politics until World War I and in some regions even later,1 Croatian music criticism was written in Croatian, German and Italian. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Croatian was mainly the language of the lower classes. In 1843 the nobleman Ivan Kukuljević- -Sakcinski was the first to speak Croatian instead of Latin in the Croatian Parlia- ment. Yet Croatian only became the official language in 1847. To the best of our knowledge, the first ever piece of Croatian music criticism was written in 1826, in the literary and entertainment journal Luna, by an anonym- ous author writing in German.2 The musicologist Lovro Županović attributes that review to Franjo Ksaver (Serafin) Stauduar (b. 1825 or 1826; d. 1864), who was the newspaper’s publisher and editor. Stauduar wrote a report in the Wiener allgemeine Theaterzeitung on a performance of the first Croatian national opera, Ljubav i zlo- ba [Love and Malice], by Vatroslav Lisinski (1819–54), from 1846, ‘which may also mean that he was personally in charge of the theatre section in Luna’.3 The first music review concerned the five-act melodrama Viola by the German dramatist Jo- seph Auffenberg (1798–1857), with music by Georg (Juraj) Karl Wisner von Mor- * Part of this text results from research conducted within the project ‘Networking through music: Changes of paradigms in the “Long 19th Century” – from Luka Sorkočević to Franjo Ks.

HRVATSKI NARODNI I KNJIŽEVNI PREPOROD Književnost realizma Vlaho Bukovac: Hrvatski preporod. Noviji povjesničari književno- sti nazivaju to razdoblje hrvatskim narodnim i književnim preporo- dom. Naziv hrvatski narodni i knji- ževni preporod određuje njegovu programsku orijentaciju: nacional- nu (političku) i kulturnu (književ- nu). Godine 1805. odlukom Sabora u Požunu mađarski jezik postaje službenim jezikom, a 1827. on postaje obvezatnim nastav- nim predmetom.

DIMITRIJA DEMETER I NJEGOVA OSTAVŠTINA U SPOMENIČKOJ KNJIŽNICI I ZBIRCI MAŽURANIĆ-BRLIĆ-RUŽIĆ THE HERITAGE OF DR DIMITRIJA DEMETER IN THE MAŽURANIĆ-BRLIĆ-RUŽIĆ MEMORIAL LIBRARY AND COLLECTION Theodor de Canziani Jakšić* SUMMARY The collections of the Mažuranic-Brlić-Ruzic Memorial Library and Archive in Rijeka contain, in addition to the libraries of Ivan, Antun and Matija Mazuranic and of Baron Kuslan, books from the library of Dimitrija Demeter. This Graeco-Croatian man of let- ters and doctor of medicine was the first modern Croatian playwright. Artefacts, paint- ings and furniture of the Demeter family are included in the collection, as well as books. Dimitrija Demeter (1811-1872), the son of Afratia and Theodor Demeter, was born into an affluent merchant family in Zagreb in 1811. His two sisters were to marry respected men from Croatian political and cultural life and his brothers became successful business men and founders of Lloyd Triestino. Dimitrija, however, initially devoted himself to science, studying at the medical faculty in Padua, where he graduated in 1834. In 1836 he received his doctor- ate, on the theme of meningitis. He later became one of the leading figures of the Croatian National Awakening. His main contributions were as an editor and playwright and he is widely regarded as the founder of modern Croatian drama. Not only did he write the plays ‘The Field of Grobnik’ and ‘Teuta’, publish articles and edit ‘Danica’, but he was a driving force behind, and promoter of, the Croatian theatre on St Mark’s Square in Zagreb.

Sakcinski adaptation (1841) APPROPRIATING THE PaST, NEGOTIATING HISTORY: KOTZEBUE’S BELa’S FLUCHT (1813) IN IVAN KUKULJEVIĆ SAKSCINSKI’S ADAPTATION (1841) Ana Mitić (Vienna) Abstract: This paper investigates the negotiation of history in Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski’s translation of August von Kotzebue’s play Bela’s Flucht (1813). The original play, written for the opening of the new German theatre in Pest, deals with the exile of the medieval Hungarian King Béla IV (b.1206, r.1235–1270) one year after the Mongol invasion. In 1841 Kukuljević adjusted the historical context of the play and introduced a different perspective on this historical episode, creating a new set of references pointing to the national past. Kukuljević pursued this subject further in his dramatic and historiographical works, related increasingly to his own historical research. By negotiating history within a “dramatic frame” Kukuljević is also framing the collective memory. The cultural presence of theatre productions in vernacular languages of the Habsburg monarchy increased during the first half of the nineteenth century, reflecting the changing socio-political circumstances of this multicultural entity. The reception of German-speaking popular theatre induced the production of dramatic works in vernacular languages and encouraged the process of cultural appropriation. In the course of the period of the national revival, the re-creation of the (national) past became an important issue and it too was negotiated on the stage. In 1811 the popular German playwright August von Kotzebue (1761–1819) was commissioned to write a dramatic trilogy with a Hungarian subject for the opening of the new German theatre in Pest.1 It included the play Bela’s Flucht (‘Bela’s f light’) as well as two smaller pieces as a prelude and a postlude: Ungerns erster Wohlthäter (‘Hungary’s first benefactor’) and Die Ruinen von Athen (’The ruins of Athens’), both with music by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827).

journal of language contact 9 (2016) 543-571 brill.com/jlc Language Mixture, Contact and Semiotic Dynamics: Some Thoughts in Counterpoint to Schuchardt’s Approach1 Robert Nicolaï Institut Universitaire de France, Laboratoire d’Histoire des Théories Linguistiques (cnrs, Paris) [email protected] Abstract This paper compares the conceptual framework of Schuchardt’s perspective on lan- guage mixing (or at least my representation of it) with that of ‘semiotic dynamics’ as presented in several of my earlier works (Nicolaï, 2011, 2012a). These two approaches entail a same interest in the activities of individuals and groups (communication actors, etc.) who, in their ordinary usage, produce and transform languages. Thus the framework of semiotic dynamics introduces conceptualizations, obviously developed independently of the process which « Slawo-deutsches und Slawo-italienisches » exem- plifies, but which, despite differing trajectories, intersects with it. This intersection justifies my assertion as to the work’s modernity and the usefulness of reviewing it. At the same time, this review broadens the scope of research and reflections in this field. In counterpoint, I will look into the justified (or not) propensity of scholars and documenters to consider a priori the objects-languages with which they work as con- stitutively homogeneous entities, albeit subject to modification and transformation by a (contingent) contact situation. Keywords Language contact – dynamics of language – semiotic dynamics – language mixture – Schuchardt 1 My thanks to Margaret Duhnam for her English translation of this paper and to Mirko Radenkovic (S&F) for his English translation of the German quotations from Schuchardt. © koninklijke brill nv, leiden, 2016 | doi 10.1163/19552629-00903005Downloaded from Brill.com09/28/2021 12:22:28AM via free access <UN> 544 Nicolaï 1 Back to the 19th Century.
