These textualizations are suspen-ded in rhetorical tension or conflict with other forms of textual rendering, and the agents behind them tend to retain the status of Roland Barthes’ historical “scriptors.” The growing relevance of travel writing as a subject for philological reflection seems to stem, however, from several other cognitive impulses. Among these, we can set apart the notion of “condition” as a problem of travel writing that we can understand in a number of ways. By confronting new places, the trave-ling subject takes stock of the personal, linguistic and cultural resources she has at her disposal. Together, these resources amount to a “condition” within our first understanding, as a form of inventory: rarely would these authors question the content (quality; volume) of their inventories before travel, and perhaps they never even knew it was possible to ask. To move on to our second understanding of condition, travel is almost always associated with a great (at times extreme) strain that forces the traveling subject to confront the limitations of her capacities and to ultima-tely develop a condition of her own: her ability to take care of herself, reckon with hardships, and concentrate on the very “here and now” of travel that ends up shaping the subject. This leads to our third understanding of condition, for the Latin conditio indicates not only an inventory and by analogy, a sense of lack, but the creative act as well. Today, the poetics of travel writing seem to rely less and less on intertextual play between a series of related narratives. More and more, they seem to consolidate certain conditional strategies. They can offer a method for taking stock of collective balances and individual inventories, or for identifying fundamental deficiencies, li-mitations, impossibilities and impasses. Finally, they allude to, or perhaps replicate, the work of developing new conditional possibilities and the formation of new skills, new forms of attention and focus, and new techniques of preservation. This final and unusually pragmatic aspect shifts the emphasis from the intertextual relationship to the relationship between text and gesture, text and worldview, or perhaps text and the creative act under strictly circumscribed conditions. introduction | Tomasz Mizerkiewicz, Travel, Condition, Poetics 5 In this issue of “Forum of Poetics”, we map out, for example, the conditional dilemmas of historical European authors chronicling their encounters with China (Anna Kołos, Tomasz Ewertowski). Briefly taking stock of the Western inventory, we do not always turn up enco-uraging results. We also see how travel was at times linked to such a vulnerable sense of one’s “condition” that travelers were compelled to develop a mythology around an imagined inventory (Krystyna Pieniążek-Marković’s article speaks to this issue in the context of travel texts by Croatian romantics). At other times, travel leads to a complex game with the forces of colonial domination (Anna Snaith describes such a process in her important article on women’s travels in London, translated for this issue). In an analogous scenario, a forgotten Polish interwar reporter denounces allegiance to colonial mythologies, exposing the cruelty of white colonists in the Congo (Mikołaj Paczkowski’s article on Tadeusz Dębicki). Using the correspondence of late romantics, Anna Marta Dworak explores the development of skills necessary for coping with the conditions of a new form of travel: the train. Przemysław Ka-liszuk describes portrayals of the conditions needed for travel in his analysis of the poetics of books by two renowned Polish climbers who took on the Himalayas, Jerzy Kukuczka and Adam Bielecki. We also encounter the special gonzo state of the contemporary, individualized traveling subject; through his extraordinary conditions, he is able to forge a radically new method for recording his encounters with the space. Arkadiusz Kalin and Cezary Rosiński discuss these themes using the case study of reportage by Ziemowit Szczerek. Urszula Ko-walska-Nadolna and Wiesław Ratajczak’s reviews of books by Robert Burden and Agnieszka Adamowicz-Pośpiech complement these reflections. The reviews meticulously discuss travel accounts as symptoms of the “condition of crisis” of modern subjectivity. Themes of condition are approached from yet another angle (this time outside the domain of travel) in two pole-mics by Grzegorz Pertek and Patryk Szaj, who explore motifs of the contemporary conditions of deconstruction and hermeneutics. We might therefore posit that today, poetological travel writing requires new “conditional” strategies, and that the poetics of the analyzed text participate in developing these strategies more or less directly. 6 winter/spring 2018 no. 11–12 Three Variations on the Road to the Far East: On Strategies for Generating Cultural Difference in Polish Travel Writing from the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries Anna Kołos This article was developed under the auspices of a grant from the National Center for the Sciences, project no. 2014/15/D/HS2/00801. As a branch of writing, travel literature poses a range of hurdles to any attempts at theoretical, methodological, genealogical or poetic classification. In a canonical reference book for philolo- gists in Poland, Dictionary of Literary Terms (Słownik terminów literackich), Janusz Sławiński defers to the broadest possible definition for the genre, arguing that travel literature operates between two poles: that which is “fully factual” sits on one end of the spectrum, while on the other, we find contrived travel tales both realistic and fantastical.1 This vast range includes Herodotus, Marco Polo, the alleged Mandeville, Columbus, More, Benyovszky, Swift, Sterne and Krasicki, to name just a few. Those who did indeed travel find themselves in the company of those who mystify or simulate travel, as well as those who experiment with the conventions of travel writing. Yet even if we were to try to impose some order on Sławiński’s semantic chaos and claim that on the level of textual ontology, writing that describes a factual journey should be differentiated from tales of fabricated voyages, the problematic categories of authenticity and literariness still prevent us from reducing

Svoju punu znanstvenu valorizaciju dobilo je sveukupno književno stvaralaštvo na hrvatskome jeziku. Pritom su utvrđeni dosadašnji stavovi o njegovu opusu, ali i revidirane ocjene o njegovim dramskim ostvarenjima.     Book Art in Croatia BOOK ART IN CROATIA National and University Library in Zagreb, Zagreb, 2018 Contents Foreword / 4 Centuries of Book Art in Croatia / 5 Catalogue / 21 Foreword The National and University Library in Croatia, with the aim to present and promote the Croatian cultural heritage has prepared the exhibition Book Art in Croatia. The exhibition gives a historical view of book preparation and design in Croatia from the Middle Ages to the present day. It includes manuscript and printed books on different topics and themes, from mediaeval evangelistaries and missals to contemporary illustrated editions, print portfolios and artists’ books. Featured are the items that represent the best samples of artistic book design in Croatia with regard to their graphic design and harmonious relationship between the visual and graphic layout and content. The author of the exhibition is art historian Milan Pelc, who selected 60 items for presentation on panels. In addition to the introductory essay, the publication contains the catalogue of items with short descriptions. 4 Milan Pelc CENTURIES OF BOOK ART IN CROATIA Introduction Book art, a constituent part of written culture and Croatian cultural heritage as a whole, is ex- ceptionally rich and diverse. This essay does not pretend to describe it in its entirety. Its goal is to shed light on some (key) moments in its complex historical development and point to its most important specificities. The essay does not pertain to entire Croatian literary heritage, but only to the part created on the historical Croatian territory and created by the Croats.     Himalaya : l’alpiniste Denis Urubko part à la conquête du K2 en solo ! Inquiétude et consternation. L’alpiniste Denis Urubko, héros du sauvetage d’Elizabeth Revol, a quitté samedi le reste de l’expédition sans prévenir, pour une attaque imminente du sommet du K2 en solitaire. Source page facebook de l’expédition Polski-Himalaizm-Zimowy-2016-2020. Après de nombreuses dissensions au sein de l’expédition polonaise partie fin décembre dans l’Himalaya avec l’intention de réaliser la première hivernale du K2, sa pièce maîtresse, Denis Urubko, a fait faux bond à ses partenaires pour atteindre le sommet en solo. C’est par un message laconique que le chef de l’expédition, Krzysztof Wielicki, a informé de la situation : « Denis Urubko a quitté la base, sans en informer la direction de l’expédition, pour tenter d’atteindre le sommet du K2 avant la fin du mois de février. L’expédition se poursuit conformément au plan prévu prévoyant la préparation d’une attaque au début du mois de mars ». L’alpiniste a quitté le camp de base du K2 samedi, sans sa radio ni sans prévenir son équipe. Il aurait été frustré par des décisions et par le rythme du reste de l’expédition, selon certains de ses membres qui ont témoigné à l’Agence France-Presse. « Il essayait de persuader l’équipe d’attaquer le sommet en février », a affirmé un porteur à l’AFP (en anglais). « Je ne pensais pas qu’il ferait ça » Krzysztof Wielicki n’a pas caché pas sa déception : « Je connais Denis depuis de nombreuses années, nous sommes amis.

Aimed to fill a gap in the publishing market, it presents a comparative synthesis of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Republic) and the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (Reich). Written in German, it is targeted mainly at the German reader. However, Polish readers will also find it very informative. The chronological boundaries of 1500–1806 are rather loose. Considering the history of Poland,the year 1500 is symbolic and stands for two other dates: 1493, when the first bicameral Sejm was summoned, and 1505 when the Nihil Novi constitution (law) was passed. For the German States, the boundary of the year 1500 is even less explicit, although the authors emphasize the historical significance of the beginnings of capitalist forms of production in the German territories. The end date, the year 1806, marks the collapse of the German Reich. The year 1795, the date of the Third Partition of Poland, would be probably more appropriate for the Commonwealth. The geographical area under consideration is marked by the German Reich, the territories settled by the German speaking population, such as Ducal Prussia and Livonia, and many cities in the Polish Crown largely populated by Germans, especially Danzig (Gdańsk), Thorn (Toruń) and Elbing (Elbląg) on one side,and the Commonwealth of the Two Nations, extended by the areas populated by speakers of Polish (that is, Ducal Prussia and parts of Silesia) on the other.

Wstęp Zimą 2012/2013 roku działała w Karakorum wyprawa zorganizowana przez Polski Związek Alpinizmu (PZA) w ramach programu „Polski Himalaizm Zimowy”, której celem było dokonanie pierwszego zimowego wejścia na Broad Peak (8047 m). W skład wyprawy weszli: Krzysztof Wielicki - kierownik wyprawy - Klub Wysokogórski Katowice. Nestor polskiego himalaizmu. Zdobywca Korony Himalajów. Autor trzech pierwszych zimowych wejść na ośmiotysięczniki, w tym Mount Everest. Jako pierwszy człowiek w historii zdobył ośmiotysięcznik - Broad Peak (8047 m) - w ciągu jednego dnia, w czasie 16-tu godzin. Na 3 ośmiotysięczniki wszedł samotnie, wytyczył 3 nowe drogi. Zimą 2002/03 prowadził zimową wyprawę na K2, a zimą 2006/07 zimową wyprawę na Nanga Parbat. Pochodzi z Tychów, mieszka w Dąbrowie Górniczej. Maciej Berbeka - Klub Wysokogórski Zakopane. As the Croatian lands were exposed to often aggressive Austrian, Hungarian and Italian politics until World War I and in some regions even later,1 Croatian music criticism was written in Croatian, German and Italian. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Croatian was mainly the language of the lower classes. In 1843 the nobleman Ivan Kukuljević- -Sakcinski was the first to speak Croatian instead of Latin in the Croatian Parlia- ment. Yet Croatian only became the official language in 1847. To the best of our knowledge, the first ever piece of Croatian music criticism was written in 1826, in the literary and entertainment journal Luna, by an anonym- ous author writing in German.2 The musicologist Lovro Županović attributes that review to Franjo Ksaver (Serafin) Stauduar (b. 1825 or 1826; d. 1864), who was the newspaper’s publisher and editor. At a large lake in the marshes near the source of the Ljubljanica they stopped and disassembled their ship to be able to carry it to the Adriatic Sea, put it together again, and return to Greece. The lake was the dwelling place of a monster, which Jason fought, defeated and killed. The monster, now referred to as the Ljubljana Dragon, found its place atop the castle tower depicted on the Ljubljana coat of arms.

This article refers not only to the massacre itself, but also its origin, historical processes and the lies accompanying Katyn massacre.     AAC Publications Nanga Parbat: First Winter Ascent Pakistan, Western Himalaya At 3.17 p.m. on February 26, Simone Moro (Italy), Muhammad Ali Sadpara (Pakistan), and Alex Txikon (Spain) stepped onto the summit of Nanga Parbat (8,125m) to make the long-awaited first winter ascent. Before the 2015-’16 winter season, which in the Northern Hemisphere conventionally runs from December 21 to March 20, a total of 31 expeditions had attempted Nanga Parbat in winter. Six more teams arrived for this winter season, and two of these eventually combined forces to make the successful ascent. Although more of a reconnaissance than a serious attempt (Nanga Parbat had not been climbed at that time), the first foray onto the mountain in winter conditions occurred in 1950, when a three-man team of British mountaineers established a couple of camps on the Rakhiot Face in December. When he started to suffer frostbite in the toes, Robert Marsh descended, leaving his companions William Crace and John Thornley in a tent at about 5,500m. They were never seen again. The Poles, those doyens of Himalayan winter mountaineering, started the ball rolling again in the 1988-’89 season. This and most subsequent expeditions failed to get above 7,000m. The best effort until this year came in early February 1997, when a Polish team led by the father of high-altitude winter mountaineering, Andrzej Zawada, established four camps on the standard Kinshofer Route, from the highest of which two climbers made a push for the top. Zbigniew Trzmiel reached a point only 250m below the summit before turning around.
