Once again thank you all for making this possible. viii Dedicated to my family. ix ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Bittersweet: Porfirian Sugar and Rum Production in Northeastern Yucatán by John R Gust Doctor of Philosophy, Graduate Program in Anthropology University of California, Riverside, June 2016 Dr. Scott L. Fedick, Chairperson In this dissertation I explore the working lives of laborers at three, late nineteenth and early twentieth century, sugar and rum production sites in the Yalahau region of northeastern Yucatan. The low native population density and harsh environment resulted in a string of short-lived, failed industries but very little investment from the governments of the state of Yucatán and the nation of Mexico through the middle of the nineteenth century. The people of the Yalahau region were some of the first to make peace with the state government during the Caste War, a revolution by the Maya and other poor workers in the area in response to increasingly terrible working and living conditions imposed upon them by Yucatan’s owner class. This new political stability, coupled with the destruction of sugar production facilities elsewhere on the peninsula, made the Yalahau x region and its acceptable, though not ideal, soils attractive for those seeking wealth through sugar cultivation. The Yalahau region provides a great opportunity to see differences both between sites and throughout the presidency of Porfirio Diaz (1876– 1910) which ended with the Mexican Revolution. Sugar production operations in the Yalahau region differed in ownership structure, scale, and distance from outside world. What was similar at all operations was the harsh nature of sugar production-an occupation that few would enter into if they had other options. Using a variety of methods, I have tried to reconstruct the working lives of a group of people who were both enmeshed in the world economy, and had their freedom limited by an economic system designed and deployed to trap workers in an intergenerational cycle of debt.

    National legislative framework for water user associations out of sync with traditional institutions. J. Palerm-Viquiera 1, A. Montes 2 Abstract The central question is how does the existence, change and continuity of a national legislation framework for irrigators’ institutions facilitate or block an effective self governance. The 1992 Mexican water law called for changes in water user associations that are slowly being implemented, these changes have to do with re-drawing the boundaries of the water user association (usually, but not always, smaller), with displacement of village community authority and with an institutional vacuum at river or even canal level. Field work on several case studies has shown that, in spit of the changes, irrigators seem to maintain the traditional management. From the government perspective, notwithstanding that water management is said to be a national priority, there is little interest in strengthening traditional institutions; government field operatives rather insist on the peasants’ failure to comply with the new legislation. However, in Mexico, traditional institutions seem to be capable of circumventing government directives that would impinge on effective irrigation water management. Effective institutional design (and a corresponding national legislation framework) has to start by recognizing the users’ existing institutions and their capacity to build on these institutions; as well as recognizing the costs of ignoring traditional organizations.     Foreword: Aztec Figurine Studies Michael E. Smith Arizona State University Ceramic figurines are one of the mystery artifact categories of ancient Mesoamerica. Although figurines are abundant at archaeological sites from the Early Formative period through Early Colonial Spanish times, we know very little about them. How were figurines used? Who used them? What was their symbolic meaning? Did these human-like objects portray deities or people? Most scholars believe that ceramic figurines were used in some way in rites or ceremonies, but it has been difficult to find convincing evidence for their specific uses or meanings. The lack of knowledge about the use and significance of ceramic figurines is particularly striking for the Aztec culture of central Mexico. 1 Early Spanish chroniclers devoted literally thousands of pages to descriptions of Aztec religion, yet they rarely mentioned figurines. Ritual codices depict numerous gods, ceremonies, and mythological scenes, yet figurines are not included. Today we have a richly detailed understanding of many aspects of Aztec religion, but figurines play only a minor role in this body of knowledge. An important reason for the omission of figurines from the early colonial textual accounts is that these objects were almost certainly used primarily by women—in the home—for rites of curing, fertility, and divination (Cyphers Guillén 1993; Heyden 1996; Smith 2002), and the Spanish friars who wrote the major accounts of Aztec culture had little knowledge of Aztec women or domestic life (Burkhart 1997; Rodríguez-Shadow 1997). Ceramic figurines can provide crucial information on Aztec domestic ritual and life. They offer a window on these worlds that are very poorly described in written sources.

The symbol of the cross existed in both European and American societies hundreds of years before Columbus. In both cultures, the cross was integral in religious ceremony, priestly decoration, and cosmic maps. As a symbol of life and death, of human and divine suffering, of religious and political acquiescence, no other image in transatlantic history has held such a perennial, powerful message as the cross. For colonial Mexico, which felt the brunt of Spanish initiative, the symbol of the cross penetrated the autochthonous culture out of which the independent nation and indigenous church were born.

She studied art history at the University of New Mexico, where she received her M. A. in Pre-Columbian art. She has taught a variety of art history courses at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and here at UTEP. She and her family have lived in El Paso for many years. Course Description This course is an introduction to the rich and varied history of art and architecture of ancient Mesoamerica and South America. Major monuments and art objects in a variety of media will be studied in terms of style and original socio-political or sacred context. This class is geared to students at the Junior-Senior level from all academic disciplines with an interest in the artistic heritage of Latin America. Students need not have had any prior experience in art history to succeed in this class, however, regular attendance at lectures and participation in class discussions are fundamental to an understanding of the material presented in this course.
